In addition, this study also aims to identify and discuss the role of pesantren in the modern era. This is a literature study using a descriptive and exploratory approach. It can be concluded that pesantren are non-formal Islamic educational institutions. Pesantren have permanent and distictive methods and learning models. The purpose of pesantren education is the same as Islamic education in general, instilling a sense of virtue, familiarizing themselves with courtesy, preparing for a holy, sincere and honest life entirely. Pesantren could be seen from three aspects: (a) pesantren that are seen from facilities and infrastructures, (b) pesantren that are seen from disciplines taught, and (c) pesantren that are seen from the fields of knowledge.

The scientific novelty of the obtained results consists in the fact that it conceptualizes for the first time in the Ukrainian sociological science the accumulation process of society‘s socialization potential in the activity of boarding schools with the use of human capital theories. This enabled to achieve certain scientific results, in particular: boarding schools were researched in the new conceptual framework as agents of accumulation of society‘s social potential; the concept «social resource potentials of educational institutions» was substantiated; the activity, relational and value components of the model of social resource potential of boarding schools was conceptualized and empirically verified; the social model of a boarding school as a modern open system was conceptualized. The following points got their further development: the provisions of G. Becker's theory of human capital regarding the explication of the concept «human capital» as a resource that pupils of boarding schools receive in the process of education and upbringing in these special social institutions that affect relations between people and the way they later use them in their life goals; the vision of a boarding school as an open system from the standpoint of provisions for group social inclusion, inclusive education and as a social institution through the justification of its explicit and latent functions. The aim of the article is to show the sociological elements in the education process that are present in Korczak’s pedagogy, both in its scientific form as well as in his fiction aimed directly at children. Therefore, society with its educational institutions (family, school, boarding school) is recognized in this pedagogy as an important sphere of symbolic references and educational influences. The key role of society (as the most important educational institution) in shaping pupils is present in commonly known works on the sociology of upbringing (including Florian Znaniecki or Józef Chałasiński), while sociological threads in Korczak’s pedagogy have not been a popular topic of separate analysis so far, apart from one monograph devoted to the subject. Therefore, this topic requires in-depth analyses and afterthought. Janusz Korczak emphasizes the role of society in a child’s life, preparing them primarily for participation in social relations, through diverse forms of group life at school, whose most important achievement is the institution of student self-government. It is thus a bridge between student-oriented education and the traditional pedagogical message, involving the transmission of the requirements of specific social roles.
