Abstract Acidizing, as an essential approach for well stimulation of sandstone or carbonate reservoirs, greatly affects the brittleness of the rock mass. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop a scientific brittleness evaluation methodology for the acid-corroded rock. In this paper, firstly, a damage constitutive model considering the compression hardening process of the acid-corroded sandstone under uniaxial loading is established and verified. Then, the evolution formulae of the relevant mechanical and fitting parameters are derived, and the stress-strain curve of the sandstone subjected to acid corrosion with soaking time is predicted. Finally, a theoretical model for evaluating the brittleness index (BI) of the acid-corroded sandstone based on energy evolution theory and damage constitutive relation is proposed. Based on this model, the BI of the sandstone subjected to acid corrosion is calculated and analyzed, and the BI of the acid-corroded sandstone with the soaking time is predicted. Results show that the BI of the sandstone is negatively correlated with the soaking time, and the rate of descent of the BI decreases with the increment of the soaking time. In addition, the decline degree of the BI has a negative correlation with the pH value. On the other hand, the temperature (25°C, 50°C, and 75°C) has greater weakening effects on the BI compared with the impact of the pressure (5 MPa, 10 MPa, and 15 MPa). Besides, days 50 and 120 are two turning points where the decreasing rates of the BI change from rapid to slow and slow to almost constant, respectively. Furthermore, a coefficient (θ) is proposed to quantify the effect of the acid corrosion, and some suggestions are provided for the application of the acidizing treatment.

Specific to the improvement in the present research of mechanical response under cyclic loading, this paper, taking the calcareous middle- coarse sandstone as the research subject and the RMT-150C experimental system in which data is recoded by ms magnitude as the platform, develops several related models concerning the unloading rate of triangle waves. The unloading process is divided into lag time segment and non-lag time segment, with criterions and related parameters provided as well. The term apparent elastic modulus is defined. The test data analysis shows that there exist a linear relationship between the apparent modulus and instant vertical force before load damage in non-lag time segment. On the preceding basis, a rate-dependent model of triangular wave un-installation section in non-lag time segment is established. Due to the inability of the loading equipment to accurately input the triangle wave, the average loading rate is amended and a constant term is added into it. The model is proved to be reliable, as the predicted value of the deformation rate and the stress strain curve coincides with measured value. At the same time, the impact of the lag time is pointed out quantitatively and a predication model of lag time segment is set up.

Interactive reinforcement learning methods utilise an external information source to evaluate decisions and accelerate learning. Previous work has shown that human advice could significantly improve learning agents’ performance. When evaluating reinforcement learning algorithms, it is common to repeat experiments as parameters are altered or to gain a sufficient sample size. In this regard, to require human interaction every time an experiment is restarted is undesirable, particularly when the expense in doing so can be considerable. Additionally, reusing the same people for the experiment introduces bias, as they will learn the behaviour of the agent and the dynamics of the environment. This paper presents a methodology for evaluating interactive reinforcement learning agents by employing simulated users. Simulated users allow human knowledge, bias, and interaction to be simulated. The use of simulated users allows the development and testing of reinforcement learning agents, and can provide indicative results of agent performance under defined human constraints. While simulated users are no replacement for actual humans, they do offer an affordable and fast alternative for evaluative assisted agents. We introduce a method for performing a preliminary evaluation utilising simulated users to show how performance changes depending on the type of user assisting the agent. Moreover, we describe how human interaction may be simulated, and present an experiment illustrating the applicability of simulating users in evaluating agent performance when assisted by different types of trainers. Experimental results show that the use of this methodology allows for greater insight into the performance of interactive reinforcement learning agents when advised by different users. The use of simulated users with varying characteristics allows for evaluation of the impact of those characteristics on the behaviour of the learning agent.

The bonding of wood with assembly adhesives is crucial for manufacturing wood composites, such as solid wood panels, glulam, furniture parts, and sport and musical instruments. This work investigates 13 hardwoods—bangkirai, beech, black locust, bubinga, ipé, iroko, maçaranduba, meranti, oak, palisander, sapelli, wengé and zebrano—and analyzes the impact of their selected structural and physical characteristics (e.g., the density, cold water extract, pH value, roughness, and wettability) on the adhesion strength with the polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) adhesive Multibond SK8. The adhesion strength of the bonded hardwoods, determined by the standard EN 205, ranged in the dry state from 9.5 MPa to 17.2 MPa, from 0.6 MPa to 2.6 MPa in the wet state, and from 8.5 MPa to 19.2 MPa in the reconditioned state. The adhesion strength in the dry state of the bonded hardwoods was not influenced by their cold water extracts, pH values, or roughness parallel with the grain. On the contrary, the adhesion strength was significantly with positive tendency influenced by their higher densities, lower roughness parameters perpendicular to the grain, and lower water contact angles.

Abstract We have investigated a relation between micromechanical processes and the stress-strain curve of a dry fiber network during tensile loading. By using a detailed particle-level simulation tool we investigate, among other things, the impact of “non-traditional” bonding parameters, such as compliance of bonding regions, work of separation and the actual number of effective bonds. This is probably the first three-dimensional model which is capable of simulating the fracture process of paper accounting for nonlinearities at the fiber level and bond failures. The failure behavior of the network considered in the study could be changed significantly by relatively small changes in bond strength, as compared to the scatter in bonding data found in the literature. We have identified that compliance of the bonding regions has a significant impact on network strength. By comparing networks with weak and strong bonds, we concluded that large local strains are the precursors of bond failures and not the other way around.

In this paper we provide an account of our multi-dimensional evaluation of a community led HIV-prevention program in the southern African mining community of Carletonville. The Mothusimpilo Project has three pillars: peer education and condom distribution, syndromic management of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and stakeholder mobilisation. Substantial efforts are being made to evaluate the impact of the intervention and in this paper we outline the theoretical rationale, research design and some preliminary results of the evaluation. The first section provides the setting for the evaluation work, viz an intervention which seeks to contextualise traditional biomedical and behavioural approaches to HIV-transmission within their broader community and social contexts. In the second section we outline the theoretical assumptions underlying the evaluation (which has both 'outcome evaluation' and 'process evaluation' components). In particular, we discuss the way in which the concepts of identity, empowerment and social capital are used to understand the processes involved in health-enhancing behaviour change. In the third section we describe our multi-disciplinary evaluation methodology and present some preliminary findings from our on-going evaluation study. One important goal of our evaluation research is to demonstrate the extent to which community level factors serve to assist or hinder the project in achieving its goals. In this way we hope to contribute to understandings of the role of community participation in influencing the outcomes of community-based health promotional projects.

The red mud disaster occurred on 4th October 2010 in Hungary has raised the necessity of rapid intervention and drew attention to the long-term monitoring of such threat. Both the condition assessment and the change monitoring indispensably required the prompt and detailed spatial survey of the impact area. It was conducted by several research groups - independently - with different recent surveying methods. The high spatial resolution multispectral aerial photogrammetry is the spatially detailed (high resolution) and accurate type of remote sensing. The hyperspectral remote sensing provides more information about material quality of pollutants, with less spatial details and lower spatial accuracy, while LIDAR ensures the three-dimensional shape and terrain models. The article focuses on the high spatial resolution, multispectral electrooptical method and the evaluation methodology of the deriving high spatial resolution ortho image map, presenting the derived environmental information database

In this study, it was carried out by designing PH, soil fertilization content, humidity and mutagenic bacteria DX1 inoculation concentration of orthogonal experiment to research chlorpyrifos degradation rate in the soil, which was affected by mutagenic bacteria DX1 in the soil environment. SPSS software was taken visualized analysis and variance analysis to evaluate the impact of different levels of the test results, to determine the factors which had significant impact on the experimental results. It showed that the best environmental factors of chlorpyrifos degradation rate in soil were the pH 7, organic fertilizer content 5mg/kg, the soil moisture 70%, inoculation volume 50ml/kg. The pH value and inoculation volume had a significant impact on chlorpyrifos degradation rate in soil; the soil humidity had little effect and the organic fertilizer content had almost no effect.

Words unknown to the lexicon present a substantial problem to part-of-speech tagging. In this paper we present a technique for fully unsupervised acquisition of rules which guess possible parts of speech for unknown words. This technique does not require specially prepared training data, and uses instead the lexicon supplied with a tagger and word frequencies collected from a raw corpus. Three complimentary sets of word-guessing rules are statistically induced: prefix morphological rules, suffix morphological rules and ending guessing rules. The acquisition process is strongly associated with guessing-rule evaluation methodology which is solely dedicated to the performance of part-of-speech guessers. Using the proposed technique a guessing-rule induction experiment was performed on the Brown Corpus data and rule-sets, with a highly competitive performance, were produced and compared with the state-of-the-art. To evaluate the impact of the word-guessing component on the overall tagging performance, it was integrated into a stochastic and a rule-based tagger and applied to texts with unknown words.

Abstract This paper presents the results of an experimental study of the stress-strain relation of annealed 2S aluminum when subjected to compression impact. Two methods of securing a dynamic stress-strain curve are considered, namely, from the measurement of impact stress as a function of maximum plastic strain, and impact stress as a function of the impact velocity. The dynamic stress-strain curves obtained by these methods lie considerably above the static curve. The elevation in stress of the dynamic relations above the static relation increases progressively from zero at the elastic limit to about 20 per cent at a strain of 4.5 per cent. However, the two dynamic relations are not coincident which indicates that the behavior of the material cannot be described by a single stress-strain curve for all impact velocities. A family of stress-strain curves which differ slightly from each other and which depend upon the final strain is postulated in order to correlate both sets of data adequately.
