Summary Injection and production can cause significant regional uplift or settlement. We analytically evaluate the potential for cement-annulus failure in response to injection-induced deformation in a coupled casing/cement/rock poromechanical vertical-well system. Deformation is calculated with respect to the initial near-wellbore stress state, occurring immediately after cement curing. Tensile-failure and shear-failure lengths along this well are predicted using a stress-development-length method. The analytical model is verified by Abaqus modeling. A sensitivity analysis identifies critical engineering-well-design parameters for ensuring wellbore-annulus integrity.

A reliability-based approach for the analysis and optimization design of anchor anti-slide pile is presented in this study by using the project cost as its objective function. The following four failure modes: tensile failure or pull-out failure of the anchor rod, as well as shear failure of anti-slide pile in the anchoring section or loading segment, are considered. The cohesion force, internal friction angle of surrounding soils, and axial compressive strength of concrete are viewed as random variables for finding optimal design parameters, such as the cross-section area or width of anchor anti-slide pile. By employing the optimization toolbox of Matlab, the corresponding design procedures are established and utilized into a practical engineering project (i.e. a slope marked as K6+525~K6+610 in Shui-Dong road, Guiyang). Results show that the proposed approach is effective and the project cost is reduced 14.89% when the reliability-based optimization design is used.

Upgrading of hoisting machines aims to improve their performance, to reduce risk of accidents, and to cut down operational and capital costs. One of the redesign solutions is replacement of steel cables by rubber cables. This novation can extend life of pulling members, decrease diameters of drive and guide wheels and, consequently, elements of the whole hoisting machines: rotor, reducing gear, motor. This engineering novation needs re-designing of hoisting machines; thus, the new design should be validated, in particular, strength characteristics of the machine members. This article considers a drive wheel of a hoisting machine with a pulling belt. In order to justify the potential range of design parameters with regard to safety factor, the numerical models of different-design drive wheels are developed and their operation with pulling belt (rubber cable) is simulated in the SolidWorks environment. The data on the stress state of the wheel elements are analyzed, the most loaded points are identified, and the maximal stresses on the sidewall surface and in the spokes of wheels of different designs are plotted.

AbstractOne of the most challenging activity in the engineering design process is the definition of a framework (model and parameters) for the characterization of specific processes such as installation and assembly. Aircraft system architectures are complex structures used to understand relation among elements (modules) inside an aircraft and its evaluation is one of the first activity since the conceptual design. The assessment of aircraft architectures, from the assembly perspective, requires parameter identification as well as the definition of the overall analysis framework (i.e., mathematical models, equations).The paper aims at the analysis of a mathematical framework (structure, equations and parameters) developed to assess the fit for assembly performances of aircraft system architectures by the mean of sensitivity analysis (One-Factor-At-Time method). The sensitivity analysis was performed on a complex engineering framework, i.e. the Conceptual Design for Assembly (CDfA) methodology, which is characterized by level, domains and attributes (parameters). A commercial aircraft cabin system was used as a case study to understand the use of different mathematical operators as well as the way to cluster attributes.

Dynamic behaviour of cable networks is highly dependent on the installation location, stiffness, and damping of cross-ties. Thus, these are the important design parameters for a cable network. While the effects of the former two on the network response have been investigated to some extent in the past, the impact of cross-tie damping has rarely been addressed. To comprehend our knowledge of mechanics associated with cable networks, in the current study, an analytical model of a cable network will be proposed by taking into account both cross-tie stiffness and damping. In addition, the damping property of main cables in the network will also be considered in the formulation. This would allow exploring not only the effectiveness of a cross-tie design on enhancing the in-plane stiffness of a constituted cable network, but also its energy dissipation capacity. The proposed analytical model will be applied to networks with different configurations. The influence of cross-tie stiffness and damping on the modal response of various types of networks will be investigated by using the corresponding undamped rigid cross-tie network as a reference base. Results will provide valuable information on the selection of cross-tie properties to achieve more effective cable vibration control.

Conventional shape-changing engineering structures use discrete parts articulated around a number of linkages. Each part carries the loads, and the articulations provide the degrees of freedom of the system, leading to heavy and complex mechanisms. Consequently, there has been increased interest in morphing structures over the past decade owing to their potential to combine the conflicting requirements of strength, flexibility and low mass. This article presents a novel type of morphing structure capable of large deformations, simply consisting of two pre-stressed flanges joined to introduce two stable configurations. The bistability is analysed through a simple analytical model, predicting the positions of the stable and unstable states for different design parameters and material properties. Good correlation is found between experimental results, finite-element modelling and predictions from the analytical model for one particular example. A wide range of design parameters and material properties is also analytically investigated, yielding a remarkable structure with zero stiffness along the twisting axis.

Abstract Sensitivity analysis is one of the most prominent gradient based optimization techniques for mechanical systems. Model sensitivities are the derivatives of the generalized coordinates defining the motion of the system in time with respect to the system design parameters. These sensitivities can be calculated using finite differences, but the accuracy and computational inefficiency of this method limits its use. Hence, the methodologies of direct and adjoint sensitivity analysis have gained prominence. Recent research has presented computationally efficient methodologies for both direct and adjoint sensitivity analysis of complex multibody dynamic systems. The contribution of this article is in the development of the mathematical framework for conducting the direct sensitivity analysis of multibody dynamic systems with joint friction using the index-1 formulation. For modeling friction in multibody systems, the Brown and McPhee friction model has been used. This model incorporates the effects of both static and dynamic friction on the model dynamics. A case study has been conducted on a spatial slider-crank mechanism to illustrate the application of this methodology to real-world systems. Using computer models, with and without joint friction, effect of friction on the dynamics and model sensitivities has been demonstrated. The sensitivities of slider velocity have been computed with respect to the design parameters of crank length, rod length, and the parameters defining the friction model. Due to the highly non-linear nature of friction, the model dynamics are more sensitive during the transition phases, where the friction coefficient changes from static to dynamic and vice versa.

Algorithms for the sensitivity analysis of multibody systems are quickly maturing as computational and software resources grow. Indeed, the area has made substantial progress since the first academic methods and examples were developed. Today, sensitivity analysis tools aimed at gradient-based design optimization are required to be as computationally efficient and scalable as possible. This paper presents extensive verification of one of the most popular sensitivity analysis techniques, namely the direct differentiation method (DDM). Usage of such method is recommended when the number of design parameters relative to the number of outputs is small and when the time integration algorithm is sensitive to accumulation errors. Verification is hereby accomplished through two radically different computational techniques, namely manual differentiation and automatic differentiation, which are used to compute the necessary partial derivatives. Experiments are conducted on an 18-degree-of-freedom, 366-dependent-coordinate bus model with realistic geometry and tire contact forces, which constitutes an unusually large system within general-purpose sensitivity analysis of multibody systems. The results are in good agreement; the manual technique provides shorter runtimes, whereas the automatic differentiation technique is easier to implement. The presented results highlight the potential of manual and automatic differentiation approaches within general-purpose simulation packages, and the importance of formulation benchmarking.
