Abstract In this research paper, a method built on UV/VIS spectrofluorophotometer and spectrophotometer by finding the fluorescence of glycyrrhizic acid in licorice root. Glycyrrhizic acid is an imperative active component present in licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch). Solvent effect had been studied in different solvents like deionized water and methanol. The differences between them were explored by the glycyrrhizic acid absorption and emission spectra. Under work conditions, i.e. 100% methanol solvent, a liquid ratio concentration 10−2 to 10−5 g /mL and second solvent with same conditions 100% deionized water in the same concentrations ,was done. The effect of the solvent was significant by change the value for λmax. The result was validated for parameters confines for Ex (λ Excitation) in different solvents. The results of absorption spectra obey Beer-Lambert's law. Because of the same property of these solvents (protic), the absence of a significant difference in the absorption spectra are shown. From florescence spectra, the spectrum at concentration 10−4 is the best for both solvents..

The administration of licorice root or licorice preparations (lat. – Glycyrrhiza glabra) is one of the rare causes of hypokalemia. The main active component of licorice is glycyrrhizic acid has mineralocorticoid-like effects. Hypokalemia caused by long-term use of glycyrrhizic acid drugs leads to the development of pseudohyperaldosteronism syndrome including arterial hypertension, metabolic alkalosis and muscle weakness. In this publication we present the clinical case of severe hypokalemia due to use of the drug “Phosphogliv”, containing the trisodium salt of glycyrrhizic acid as one of the active substances. The specific feature of the case given is that the complication was caused using the therapeutic dosage of the drug.

The effects of salt and osmotic stresses on the germination processes in seeds of the perennial halophyte species Atriplex halimus L. were compared using iso-osmotic concentrations of NaCl and mannitol. The lowest stress intensity delayed germination, while higher doses of NaCl and mannitol reduced final germination percentages. No significant difference occurred between the effects of these solutes on germination percentages or seedling dry weights. At an external osmotic potential of –0.7 MPa, however, the water content of mannitol-treated seedlings was reduced compared to that of seedlings that developed from NaCl-exposed seeds. The K, Mg, and Pi content decreased in seedlings that developed from mannitol-treated seeds while calcium concentration was strongly reduced in those arising from NaCl-treated seeds. Inhibited seeds were able to germinate at levels similar to those of the control after rinsing in deionized water and imbibition in control conditions. Seedlings produced from NaCl pre-treated seeds had a lower Ca and a higher Na content than control seedlings. The effect of salinity on the germination phase of development is mainly due to its osmotic component, and inhibition of germination is reversible. Both salt and osmotic stresses may have an impact on the mobilization of minerals from the seeds to the young seedling, but this effect does not have any consequence on growth processes analysed on a short-term basis.Key words: Atriplex halimus, halophyte, osmotic stress, recovery of seed germination, salinity.

In this work, properties of Nd3+ in Gd2O3-CaO-SiO2-B2O3 glass systems with composition 25Gd2O3-10CaO-10SiO2-(55-x)B2O3-xNd2O3 where x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 mol% were investigated. The optical absorption spectra show peaks at 4F3/2 (877 nm) , 4F5/2+2H9/2 (802 nm), 4F7/2+4S3/2 (743 nm), 4F9/2 (682 nm), 2H11/2 (627 nm), 2G7/2 +4G5/2 (582 nm), 4G7/2 +2K13/2 (527 nm), 4G11/2 (481 nm), 2P1/2 (427 nm) and 2L15/2 + 4D1/2 + 1I11/2+ 4D5/2+ 4D3/2 (355 nm) reflecting the Nd3+ ions in glass matrices. The densities were increased with increasing of Nd2O3 concentration. This indicates the increase of the molecular weight by the replacement of B2O3 with a heavier Nd2O3 oxide in the glass. The upconversion luminescence spectra show bands at 393 nm for all Nd2O3 concentration and the strongest intensity from 2.5 % mol of Nd2O3 was obtained. For NIR luminescence, the intensity of Nd3+ emission spectra increases with increasing concentrations of Nd3+ up to 1.5 mol% and beyond 1.5 mol% the concentration quenching is observed.

A series of fluorescence compounds, 4-benzofuranyl-1,8-naphthalimides, were prepared through cycloaddition reaction from 4-ethynyl-1,8-naphthalimides and o-iodophenols which catalyzed by a Pd(PPh3)2Cl2 / CuI system under mild conditions. The intermediate material, 4-ethynyl-1,8- naphthalimide, was synthesized from 4-bromo-1,8- naphthalimide and trimethylsilyl- acetylene. The absorption and fluorescence spectra of 4-benzofuranyl-1,8- naphthalimides were studied and the quantum yields were measured. The maximum UV/vis absorption spectra were in the range of 375-400 nm and the maximum emission spectra were in the range of 470-510 nm. The electro- luminescent properties were also mensurated through a doped electroluminescent device which contains 1% 1,8-naphthalimides and 99% CBP (4,4'-N,N'-dicarbazole-biphenyl), It’s shown the maximum brightness reached 3700 cd/ m2 at 22.5V.

The absorption spectra of Si/SiO2/Si3N4/Si+ and Si/SiO2/Si+ structures with an island surface layer are calculated using the finite difference time domain method. The absorption spectra were modeled depending on the thickness of the substrate and its doping level. It was found that the thickness of the i-Si substrate does not affect the overall absorption of the structure. At the same time, an increase in the thickness of the n-Si substrate leads to an expansion of the absorption band with an intensity of more than 70%. It is established that the doping level of the substrate affects the absorption value of the structures and bandwidth with an absorption value above 80%. It is shown that a wide absorption band with intensity of more than 80% occurs at the doping level of the substrate in the range of 2 . 1019—5 . 1019 cm–3. Dispersion relations in the Si+/SiO2/Si+ structure with an unstructured surface layer are obtained. These dispersion relations may indicate the existence of plasmon oscillations in the system. It is established that a violation of the phase synchronization of the modes at both Si/dielectric interfaces at a significant difference between the doping levels of the substrate and the surface layer can lead to a decrease in the absorption.

This study evaluated, in vitro, marginal microleakage in class II restorations confected with the glass ionomer cement Vitremer and with the composite resins Ariston pHc and P-60. The aims of the study were to assess the effect of thermocycling on those materials and to evaluate two methods utilized in the analysis of dye penetration. Sixty premolars divided in three groups were utilized; the teeth had proximal cavities whose cervical walls were located 1 mm below the cementoenamel junction. Half of the test specimens from each group underwent thermocycling; the other half remained in deionized water, at 37ºC. The specimens were immersed, for 24 hours, in a basic 0.5% fuchsin solution at 37ºC. For the analysis of microleakage, the specimens were sectioned in a mesio-distal direction, and the observation was carried out with the software Imagetools. The results were evaluated through the 2-way ANOVA and through the Tukey’s test. All groups presented marginal microleakage. The smallest values were obtained with Vitremer, followed by those obtained with the composite resins P-60 and Ariston pHc. There was no statistically significant difference caused by thermocycling, and the method of maximum infiltration was the best for detecting the extension of microleakage.

AbstractBackgroundNanosilver fluoride (NSF) was developed as an alternative in the prevention of dental caries.PurposeThe aim of this study was to test the remineralizing action of NSF on incipient enamel caries and its antimicrobial action on the acid production and adhesion of Streptococcus mutans.MethodsDeciduous enamel fragments were treated with sodium fluoride (NaF), NSF and deionized water. Microhardness, fluorescence spectroscopy and optical coherence tomography imaging were performed on each specimen before chemical caries induction, after caries induction and after 14 days of pH cycling. The treated enamel fragments were also placed into test tubes containing bacterial suspension and saliva. The pH readings and quantification of the adhered microorganisms to the dental enamel were determined. Analysis of variance, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, Tukey and mixed linear regression model were applied.ResultsNSF and NaF were effective in enamel remineralization, with a statistically significant difference (p<0.001) to deionized water, and they had no statistically significant difference between themselves (p>0.005). NSF had greater effectiveness compared to NaF in preventing decreases of pH and adhesion of S. mutans to the enamel surface, with statistically significant (p<0.001) differences.ConclusionNSF may be more effective than conventional fluorides in treating incipient caries lesions due to its remineralization and antibacterial actions.
