Abstract Background: Natural mating colony cages for parent-stock layer breeders, instead of conventional cages with artificial insemination, have been widely adopted by many commercial farms in China. However, the fertility rate of this system is unstable and varies greatly among different cage tiers. We speculated that the difference in fertility rate might be caused by uneven illumination because vision appears to play a central role in hens’ behaviour, including mating, which is an important factor that affects the reproductive performance of hens. The objectives of this study was to investigate the effects of 4 LED light colours (white: WL, red: RL, yellow-orange: YO, blue-green: BG) with 2 light intensities (10 lux, 25 lux) in each colour on mating frequency and fertility for layer breeders in natural mating colony cages. Results: A total of 32 identical cages were involved in the 8 treatments, with 4 replicates for each treatment and 5 males and 45 females per cage. The results showed significant effects of age, light colour, light intensity and colour-intensity interaction on the frequency of mating behaviour, integrity of matings and fertility. Overall, flocks treated with WL and RL and a higher light intensity in natural mating colony cages during the laying period showed a more frequently mating behaviour, a large proportion of relatively complete matings and a higher fertility. All components of mating behaviour and fertility declined from 30 through 40 to 50 wks of age, but no significant correlation was found between fertility and mating behaviour. Conclusions: In summary, the results of this study illustrate that different LED light colour and light intensity influenced the mating behaviour and fertility of layer breeders. WL and RL and a higher light intensity could increase the frequency of mating behaviour, the proportion of complete matings and fertility. No significant correlation was found between fertility and mating behaviour. Such knowledge can help to understand mating behaviour in natural mating colony cages and provide a basis for the optimization of light environment regulation.

Natural mating colony cages for layer breeders have become commonplace for layer breeders in China. However, feather pecking (FP) and cannibalism are prominent in this system. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of four light-emitting diode (LED) light colors (white: WL, red: RL, yellow-orange: YO, blue-green: BG) with two light intensities for each color, on FP, plumage condition, cannibalism, fear, and stress. A total of 32 identical cages were used for the eight treatments (four replicates for each treatment). For both light intensities, hens in RL had a lowest frequency of severe FP, whereas hens in WL had the highest frequency of severe FP. Hens in RL and BG had better plumage conditions than in WL and YO. Compared with RL and BG treatments, hens treated with WL and YO had a significantly longer tonic immobility (TI) duration. Hens treated with RL had a higher concentration of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), a lower concentration of corticosterone (CORT), and a lower heterophil to lymphocyte ratio than WL and YO. Furthermore, RL could significantly reduce mortality from cannibalism. Overall, hens treated with RL and low light intensity showed a lower frequency of severe FP, less damaged plumage, were less fearful, had lower physiological indicators of stress, and had reduced mortality from cannibalism. Transforming the light color to red or dimming the light could be regarded as an effective method to reduce the risk of FP and alleviate the fear responses of layer breeders.

In this study, our proposed ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV LED) mosquito-trapping lamp is designed to control diseases brought by insects such as mosquitoes. In order to enable the device to efficiently catch mosquitoes in a wider area, a secondary freeform lens (SFL) is designed for UV LED. The lens is mounted on a 3 W UV LED light bar as a mosquito-trapping lamp of the new UV LED light bar module to achieve axially symmetric light intensity distribution. The special SFL is used to enhance the trapping capabilities of the mosquito-trapping lamp. The results show that when the secondary freeform surface lens is applied to the experimental outdoor UV LED mosquito-trapping lamp, the trapping range can be expanded to 100π·m2 and the captured mosquitoes increased by about 300%.

Penggunaan intensitas cahaya pada unit penangkapan light fishing cenderung meningkat. Hal ini, didasari atas persepsi bahwa intensitas cahaya yang tinggi akan meningkatkan hasil tangkapan. Fenomena ini dijadikan suatu penelitian yang dilakukan selama 3 minggu pada bulan September 2004 di perairan Pemalang Jawa Tengah. Alat tangkap pukat cincin mini (mini purse seine) di pantai utara Jawa pada operasi penangkapan selain menggunakan rumpon juga mengggunakan cahaya sebagai alat bantu penangkapan. Pengukuran nilai intensitas lampu dilakukan dengan meggunakan LI COR 250 quantum meter (μmol sɹ mɲ) pada jumlah lampu yang berbeda, dan digunakan pula akustik EY 500 untuk memperoleh data sebaran dan gerombolan ikan yang berada dalam pengaruh cahaya lampu. Pada deteksi awal (A) ikan cenderung mengelompok pada lahan intensitas tinggi, deteksi ke 2 (B) pengelompokkan mulai terkonsentrasi dekat kapal, deteksi ke-3 (C) pengelompokkan ikan bertambah banyak, dan deteksi ke-4 (D) kelompok ikan berada pada lahan yang sangat memungkinkan untuk ditangkap. Dari hasil penelitian diperoleh laju tangkap (catch rate) 125,7 kg per tawur. Perbedaan jumlah lampu yang sedikit tidak menunjukkan pengaruh yang terlalu besar terhadap hasil tangkapan. The influence of light intensity to the light fishing practices commonly tends to increase. Fishermen believe that with the higher intensity of light the bigger catch they have. This phenomenon stimulated us to a research that during was done three weeks on September 2004 in Pemalang West Java. Mini purse seine is conduct at north coast of Java use payaos and light artificial for fish attractive. LI COR 250 quantum metre (μmol sɹ mɲ) was used for light intencity at different lamps amount and EY 500 acoustic to obtain the data of fish school in influence of lamp light. At the first detecting (A) fish school was concentrated in high intensity area, the second detecting (B) the concentration was closer to the ship, the third detecting (C) fish school increased, and the forth detecting (D) fish school was consentrated in catchable area. The results show that the cath rate was 125.7 kg per setting. The difference of lamps amount with a small intensity did not show significant influence to the catch haul.

1. A method is described for studying the responses of Daphnia to changes of light intensity with special attention to the behaviour of the individual and to the avoidance of "shock" effects. The types of apparatus used provide for rigid control of the temperature, for illumination from any direction, and for an adjustable rate of change of the light intensity by means of a chemical rheostat. 2. The great majority of Daphnia magna and Daphnia pulex were found to be primarily negatively phototropic and positively geotropic. That is, they always exhibited those tropistic signs under constant conditions of illumination. 3. A reduction of the light intensity causes a temporary reversal of the tropism signs. The secondary signs thus produced are positive phototropism and negative geotropism. 4. The presence of both phototropic and geotropic forces is proved by experiments in which illumination is (1) from one side, (2) from beneath, and (3) from two opposing sides or from above and below simultaneously. In these tests and in others in which very slow and very fast rates of dimming are used the phototropic and geotropic forces are resolved, antagonised, and neutralised in succession. The responses of the Daphnia indicate that there are two types of animals which exhibit exactly the same tropisms, but in one type phototropism is the stronger while in the other geotropism is the stronger. 5. In this material it was found that the temporary secondary tropistic signs persisted only a few minutes while the primary signs persisted for hours, although this effect was somewhat less marked in weak light or in darkness. 6. The difference between "time-change" and "place-change" of light in tensity is pointed out. Daphnia is stimulated by both types of change if the rate of change is sufficiently great. 7. That photosensitive animals are stimulated to respond to changes in the intensity of light only and are merely orientated by the direction of the light is shown in the work of previous, investigators as well as in this paper. The rigidity of this mechanism is indicated by experiments in which the light is graded in intensity at right angles to its direction and in which the light is rendered converging and diverging by a lens. 8. Evidence is given for believing that there is no "absolute optimum" light intensity for Daphnia but that a "relative optimum" exists which is the intensity to which the animals are adapted at the moment. 9. The interval between the inception of the reduction of the light intensity and the beginning of swimming movements in response is called the latent period. The faster the rate of dimming, the shorter is the duration of the latent period. A minimum, amount of intensity change is required to produce any response, at any speed, but beyond that the slower the rate of dimming, the greater is the amount of change required and hence the lower is the absolute intensity at which the response takes place. Ordinarily, the response is maximal in respect to both rate and magnitude. 10. Fatigue will interfere with experimentation unless guarded against. 11. Specimens of Daphinia with reversed primary signs gain temporary secondary signs following an increase of light intensity; otherwise they behave like the more usual forms. 12. The possibility that the processes of adaptation in Daphnia may account for the photic responses observed is discussed. Support for this theory is derived from the fact that it is possible to dim the light over a given range at such a slow rate that no response is produced.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengestimasi produk degradasi pigmen ekstrak kasar alga merah Kappaphycus alvarezii (Doty) Doty varian merah, coklat dan hijau yang terbentuk selama perlakuan iradiasi dan pemanasan, melalui perbedaan spektrum serapannya. Ketiga varian diekstraksi menggunakan 100% metanol. Uji fotostabilitas ekstrak pigmen dilakukan dengan iradiasi menggunakan lampu Volpi intralux 4100 pada intensitas cahaya 39300 lux, 56700 lux dan 76400 lux.  Lama waktu penyinaran 0, 5, 10, 15, dan 20 menit. Sedangkan uji termostabilitas  dilakukan pada suhu 25 dan 90 ° C selama 0, 3, 6 24, dan 48 jam. Pola spektra diukur pada panjang gelombang 300-800 nm sebelum dan sesudah perlakuan dengan spektrofotometer UV-Tampak Shimadzu 1700. Data dianalisis dengan SPINA Versi 3, untuk memperoleh intensitas maksimum dan perbedaan spektra serapan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa produk degradasi pigmen ekstrak kasar alga merah K. alvarezii dapat diidentifikasi melalui spektrum serapan dan hasil perbedaan spektra serapan. Isomer cis karotenoid, karotenoid tidak berwarna, dan feofitin a diestimasi sebagai produk degradasi yang terbentuk selama perlakuan iradiasi dengan intensitas cahaya 76400 lux dan perlakuan pemanasan pada suhu 90°C selama 48 jam. Penurunan intensitas warna larutan pigmen juga mengindikasikan terbentuknya produk degradasi selama perlakuan. Kata kunci: Kappaphycus alvarezii, perbedaan spektrum serapan, produk degradasi The aims of this study were to estimate the degradation products of crude pigment extracts from red, brown, and green varieties of red alga Kappaphycus alverezii (Doty) Doty that formed during irradiation and heating treatment from their difference absorption spectra. All three variants were extracted using 100% methanol. The photostability assay of crude pigment extracts was conducted by irradiating the crude pigment extracts with a day light lamp (Volpi, Intralux 4100) at 39300 lux, 56700 lux and 76400 lux light intensity during 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 minutes treatment, whereas the thermostability assay was performed at 25 and 90 °C for 0, 3, 6 24, and 48 hours. The absorption spectra of the crude pigment extract before and after each treatment were monitored successively at 300-800 nm using MultiSpec 1501 UV-VIS spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed with spina Version 3, to obtain maximum intensity and the difference absorption spectra. The results showed that the  degradation products of crude pigment extracts from red alga K. alvarezii could be identified by absorption spectra and difference absorption spectra. Cis isomers carotenoids, colorless carotenoids, and feofitin-a were estimated as degradation product formed during the irradiation treatment with 76400 lux of light intensity and heating treatment at a temperature of 90 ° C for 48 hours. Decrease in the intensity of the color of pigment solution also indicates the formation of degradation products during treatment.Key words: Kappaphycus alvarezii, difference absorption spectra, degradation products

Abstract. Previous research indicated improvement of incubation by light stimuli. However, the light source arrangement, usually with irradiation from top to bottom, was inconvenient and high in cost. Among the different light colors, the effects of green LED light stimuli during embryo development were inconclusive. In this study, two LED lamps were installed on both sides of egg trays, and the irradiation was directed from the edges to the middle. The effect of green LED light with various light intensities was investigated. A total of 1408 broiler eggs were randomly allocated to high light (300 lx), middle light (150 lx), low light (50 lx), and dark treatments with four replicates. Embryo weight, body length, organ weight, hatching performance, and serum hormone levels were tested. The results indicated that incubation of the broiler eggs under an appropriate light intensity (low light treatment, 50 lx) of green light significantly increased embryo weight, body length, and hatchability (p < 0.001). According to the serum hormone tests, only the low light treatment significantly increased the thyroxine (T4) levels of the chicks (p < 0.05) at hatching, but the middle and high light treatments slightly decreased the T4 and testosterone (TES) levels of the chicks compared with the dark treatment. Moreover, peak hatching time occurred 12 h earlier in the light treatments compared with the dark treatment. In conclusion, an appropriate light intensity (low light treatment, 50 lx) of LED green light improved embryo growth and hatching performance, but excessive light intensity reduced the positive effects or even produced slight negative effects on the T4 and TES levels of chicks at hatching. The estimated calving percentage of beef cattle is 62% in the commercial sector of South Africa. Fertility is regarded as the main component influencing total herd efficiency in beef cattle. If the long calving seasons can be shortened and the calving percentage increased, more and heavier calves with a more uniform age can be weaned. Cows calving earlier in the season also have an extended “recovery period” and have the opportunity to calve in a better body condition during the next season, compared to cows calving late in the season. Cows that calve early also have a better chance of conceiving in the next breeding season and are generally seen as the more fertile animals. Research has been undertaken to evaluate the effect of oestrous synchronization followed by natural mating on the calving rate and calving distribution of multiparous beef cows. In this trial Bonsmara cows were mated naturally after synchronization over a period of four years (2009 - 2012) in an extensive production system on natural sour-mixed bushveld. The synchronized cows calved earlier during the 2009 calving season and cows in anoestrus started cycling again. The average days-to-calving after the start of the breeding season was 243 days for the synchronized cows and 267 for the non-synchronized cows. The calves born from the synchronized cows were therefore, on average, 24 days older than the calves born from the non-synchronized cows. From 2010 onwards the difference declined and it seems the biggest effect was obtained during the first year of synchronization.Keywords: Beef cattle, Marikana thorn veld, natural mating, oestrous synchronization

A rabbit-census method, based on systematic counts conducted at night or at dawn and dusk, was developed and validated in terms of estimating the total number of rabbits present in a given area. Initially, models were developed under semi-natural conditions to describe the relationships between the numbers of rabbits counted and population size. Confidence limits were also calculated. The models were developed by comparing rabbit counts with the actual number of rabbits present, from a known population of animals. Only spotlight counts at night were considered reliable enough to estimate rabbit population size. During the autumn and winter months these represented ~60% of the population present. The model was subsequently validated, in two different exercises, following a series of field trials conducted under a variety of conditions on commercial farms. Initially, population estimates derived from the model were compared with those calculated using an alternative census technique. Population estimates, using the two techniques, were very similar at nine of the ten study sites. A second validation exercise was also conducted whereby the number of rabbits removed at each of the sites was compared with the difference between the mean pre- and post-removal spotlight counts. The results further supported the proposition that spotlight counts represent ~60% of the population present, with the difference between the two mean spotlight counts representing 61.2% (± 11.0, s.d.) of the number of rabbits removed. The census method therefore shows considerable promise as a means to estimate rabbit numbers under a range of agricultural conditions and therefore has the potential to predict accurately the economic costs of rabbit damage and also to gauge the effectiveness of various methods of rabbit control.
