Abstract Background: The pathogenesis of non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH ) is related to the interruption of blood supply caused by lipid metabolism and hypercoagulability. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between clinical biochemical parameters and non-traumatic ONFH. Methods: The basic information and biochemical indexes of 1292 patients with non- traumatic ONFH and 1880 healthy controls were collected. SPSS software (version 22.0) was used to process and analyze the data. T-test was used for quantitative analysis. Chi-square test was used for categorical variables.p< 0.05 were the index with statistical significance. Results: In the population sample, TC (p= 0.00004), LDL (p= 0.014) and PLT (p= 0.000005) levels were statistically significant between the two groups. In men, levels of TC (p = 0.004), LDL (p= 0.011), and PLT (p= 0.00005) were statistically significant between the two groups. In women, TC (p= 0.001) and PLT (p= 0.048) levels were statistically significant between the two groups. There were differences in TC (p= 0.00001) and PLT (p= 0.031) levels between the case group and the control group in samples aged less than 45 years. There were differences in LDL (p= 0.00002) and PLT (p= 0.022) levels between the two groups in samples older than 45 years.Compared with the control group, patients with alcohol-induced ONFH had HDL (p = 0.002).LDL (p= 0.00002);The level of PLT (p= 0.0001) was significantly different.HDL (p = 0.005) was found in alcohol-induced ONFH patients younger than 45 years of age.The PLT level (p=0.045) was different from that of the control group. There was a difference in LDL (p= 0.000003) levels between control and alcohol-induced ONFH patients older than 45 years. The older the onset age, the TC in vivo;HDL;LDL;ApoA1;ApoB;The lower the PLT level. With the prolongation of the onset time, the PLT level in the patient's body is decreasing continuously. Conclusion: The changes of biochemical indexes are closely related to the occurrence of non-traumatic ONFH. Our research can provide a new direction for the prevention of ONFH.

The use of seat belts, for drivers and car occupants, results in reducing the rate of fatalities and severe road injuries. In this research, the methodology of the survey was applied through the self-reporting behaviour of the respondents who determined the subjective risk based on the attitudes of the traffic participants. To evaluate the statistical significance of the categorical variables, Pearson's chi-square test was used. For certain groups of examinees, the results of the relationship (association) between socio demographic characteristics were analysed as predictors of behaviour with the degree of seat belt use. Some other predictors of behaviour, such as the road and mood predictors were analysed as well. Interest was also focused on finding out what motivated certain groups of examinees to use the seat belt. Based on the results of this research, it is possible to classify the drivers and car occupants into certain groups with respect to the seat belt use while driving. This can help in determining the ways of eliminating problems related to the low degree of seat belt use.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship between hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) via the national health insurance research database (NHIRD) of Taiwan. All patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes (n = 47,353) in the NHIRD (2000–2012) were enrolled in the study. The case group consists of participants with diabetic ophthalmic complications; 1:1 matching by age (±1 year old), sex, and diagnosis year of diabetes was used to provide an index date for the control group that corresponded to the case group (n = 5550). Chi-square test for categorical variables and Student’s t-test for continuous variables were used. Conditional logistic regression was performed to estimate the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of DR. The total number of HCQ user was 99 patients (1.8%) in the case group and 93 patients (1.7%) in the control group. Patients with hypertension (aOR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.11–1.31) and hyperlipidemia (aOR = 1.65, 95% CI = 1.52–1.79) significantly increased the risk of diabetic ophthalmic complications (p < 0.001). Conversely, the use of HCQ and the presence of rheumatoid diseases did not show any significance in increased risk of DR. HCQ prescription can improve systemic glycemic profile, but it does not decrease the risk of diabetic ophthalmic complications.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of adding sucrose in vitrification solution of ovine embryos produced in vivo. Forty Dorper ewes were selected and superovulated. Immediately prior to the embryo collection by laparotomy, a laparoscopy was performed to verify the superovulatory response. The recovered flushing was followed by embryo evaluation and embryos were divided in two experimental groups where embryos from Control group were submitted to a traditional vitrification protocol and embryos from Sucrose group to a modified vitrification protocol with sucrose. After warming, embryos were again divided regarding cryoprotectant removal (Indirect) or not (Direct). The embryo quality was classified as embryos of degrees I (excellent or good), II (regular), III (poor) and IV (dead or degenerate). It was also verified the homogeneity of mass, occurrence of embryonic mass retraction and rupture of pellucid zone. The results were expressed as percentages and were subjected to Chi-square test with P < 0.05. The embryos vitrified in the presence of sucrose had lower proportions of lower-quality embryos after warming (22.20 vs. 44.50%), higher percentages of homogeneous embryos after warming (63.89 vs. 38.89 %) while concerning other parameters there was no difference between these groups. It can be concluded that the addition of 0.4 M sucrose during vitrification improves the embryo quality.

The incidences of pneumonia in infants Become the second highest cause mortality before reaching the age of 5 years and a health problem in Indonesia. The family of smoking and smoke from burning mosquito coils are the triggers for air pollution, which can lead to pneumonia in infants. The study aims to analyze the relationship between family smoking habits and the use of mosquito coils with the incidence of pneumonia in under-fives. The method of research applied analytic observational research using a case-control study approach. The number of samples in this study was 87 under-fives in the case group and 87 under-fives in the control group. Sampling was conducted by non-probability sampling. A questionnaire was used as a data collecting instrument. Data analysis used chi-square and multiple logistic regression. The results of this study Showed that there was a relationship between family smoking habits and the use of mosquito coils with the incidence of pneumonia in infants. In addition, there were other variables that had a relationship with the incidence of pneumonia in under-fives namely smoking location (OR = 3,046; 95% CI: 1429-6492, p = 0.003), the number of cigarettes (OR = 7.105 ; 95% CI: 3079-16394, p = 0.000), and length of time with smokers (p = 0.000). On the other hand, the variables of father smoker status and the frequency of using mosquito coils were not related to the incidence of pneumonia in under-fives (p value 0.05). It is concluded that family smoking habits, use of mosquito coils, the location of smoking, and number of cigarettes, and length of time together with smokers were risk factors associated with the incidence of pneumonia in toddlers

Abstract Objectives: To determine the success of bracket retention using an adhesion promoter with and without the additional microabrasion of enamel. Materials and Methods: Fifty-two teeth with severe dental fluorosis were bonded in vivo using a split-mouth design where the enamel surfaces of 26 teeth were microabraded with 50 μm of aluminum silicate for 5 seconds under rubber dam and high volume suction. Thirty-seven percent phosphoric acid was then applied to the enamel, washed and dried, and followed by placement of Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus Bonding Adhesive. Finally, precoated 3M Unitek Victory brackets were placed and light cured. The remaining teeth were bonded using the same protocol but without microabrasion. Results: After 9 months of intraoral service, only one bond failure occurred in the control group where microabrasion was used. Chi-square analysis revealed P = .31, indicating no statistical significance between the two groups. Conclusions: Bonding orthodontic attachments to fluorosed enamel using an adhesion promoter is a viable clinical procedure that does not require the additional micro-mechanical abrasion step.

Eight-cell-stage to pre-compaction morula are the most used embryonic stages to aggregation, because the embryos, in these early stages, synthesise cell adhesion molecules that increase the aggregation chances among them (Vestweber et al. 1987 Develop. Biol. 124, 451–456). Although post-compaction embryos produce reduced aggregation rates, they are not refractory to this process (Nogueira et al. 2010 Transgenic Res. 19, 344–345). Based on the evidence of less permissive aggregation in post-compaction-stage embryos and the need to expose the inner surface of those embryos to improve aggregation rate, the aim of this study was to evaluate, in mice, the influence of cell quantity (i.e. the quantity of half-embryos put together to aggregate themselves) in the chimerism rate of split blastocysts. Embryos, with preferentially different phenotypes, were obtained from C57BL/6/EGFP and Swiss Webster strains. Females ranging from 21 to 45 days old were superstimulated and mated according to Mancini et al. (2008 Transgenic Res. 17, 1015). Eight-cell-stage embryos (8C) and pre-compaction morula (PCM) were recovered (2 to 2.5 days post coitum) and had their zona pellucida removed using pronase treatment (2 mg mL–1 for 15 min), whereas blastocysts (recovered 3.5 dpc) were split with a microblade controlled by micromanipulator in an inverted microscope (NK2; Eppendorf, Hamburg, Germany and Eclipse Ti; Nikon, Tokyo, Japan, respectively). The aggregation groups were a control (C) with 2 pre-compaction whole embryos (8C or PCM, or both) and 2 experimental with post-compaction embryos [i.e. 2 (2DB) or 4 (4DB) demi-blastocysts]. The structures (2 or 4) of the groups were stuck to each other with the use of phytohemagglutinin (1 mg mL–1) and cultured in vitro by 24 h (37°C, 5% CO2 and saturated humidity). After culture, the presence of chimeric embryos was verified by detection of a single, cohesive cell mass or a structure in an 8 shape with more than one-half of its total diameter aggregated. For the 4DB group, a successful aggregation was considered when, at least 2 of 4 DB had aggregated. The results were analysed using chi-square test, Fisher's exact test and Kruskal-Wallis (to compare among groups, between groups and among medians of group replicates, respectively) and significance was considered when P < 0.05. The aggregation rates for the groups C, 2DB and 4DB were, respectively, 77.3a; 8.3b and 36.4%c (P < 0.001). The increasing of the aggregation technique efficacy, in post-compaction stages, would be particularly interesting in farm animals (e.g. bovine species), where it is not feasible to obtain, in vivo, pre-compaction stages embryos (as 8 cells) and when only trophectoderm aggregation is wanted. It was concluded that cell increasing (from 2 to 4 DB) improved the chimerism rate, but not enough to be similar to the control group. Supported by FAPESP of Brazil.

Background: A woman’s prior breastfeeding history may influence future decisions regarding infant feeding. Few quantitative tools utilizing this information have been demonstrated to predict breastfeeding success. Research aim: To evaluate the efficacy of a prenatal breastfeeding history (BAP) questionnaire administered in prenatal care to predict in-hospital formula supplementation among multiparous women. Methods: This is a prospective observational study of multiparous women with singleton pregnancies who presented to a Baby-Friendly urban tertiary care center for 1st prenatal visit at < 20 weeks’ gestation. The BAP tool generates a numerical score, with higher score (≥ 2) indicating prior successful breastfeeding experiences. The primary outcome was occurrence of non-medically indicated formula supplementation during the postpartum hospital stay. Student’s t test and Pearson’s chi-square test were used to compare continuous and categorical variables. A multivariable logistic regression was performed to assess the relationship of BAP score to formula supplementation. Of 587 women screened, 433 (73.8%) mother–infant dyads were analyzed. Results: Rates of formula supplementation in women with BAP scores ≤ 1 were 67% (156/234) compared with 37% (73/199) in women with higher scores ( p < 0.0001). After controlling for race/ethnicity, insurance, and obesity, women with BAP scores of ≤ 1 were 2.6 times more likely to supplement formula than women with higher scores (a OR 2.62, 95% CI [1.70, 4.04], p < .0001). Conclusion: In this prospective validation study, women with negative prior breastfeeding experiences, as evidenced by a lower BAP score, were more likely to supplement formula during the postpartum hospital stay.
