Abstract The publication is addressing the problems of pollution from agricultural sources; municipal wastewater and industry in line with the bacterial pollution caused by migratory waterfowl of Paliastomi Lake that is an internationally recognized habitat, wintery and transit area of the birds and an important tourism site. It reviews: the current state of the environment of Paliastomi Lake at the moment of the chemical and microbiological research and mathematical simulation modeling of possible dissemination of polluting chemicals and bacterial pathogens; pollution by nutrient-rich water causing large blooms of algae and aquatic plants that in its turn leaves little oxygen for fish and other aquatic animals, resulting in the eutrophication followed by suffocation of aquatic life. According to the research provided, the publication recommends ongoing monitoring of not only the lake's inflowing waters, but also seasonal sources of bacterial pollution caused by migratory birds. According to monitoring, the integration of constructed wetlands, localized spraying of bacteriophage cocktails, and feeding the birds, who are potential carriers of pathogenic bacteria, with food supplemented with BCs will help limit bacterial contamination, improve the habitat for local and migratory waterfowl, and ensure the biosecurity of the area.

Abstract BackgroundThe purpose of the research was to provide the review of the institutional and legal requirements and evaluation of the existing sanitary-biological research of the Lake Paliastomi waters; study the current state of environment, problems of pollution from agricultural sources, municipal wastewater and industry in line with the bacterial pollution caused by migratory waterfowl of the Lake Paliastomi, an internationally recognized habitat, wintery and transit area of the birds and an important tourism site. ResultsHave been prepared the analytical data on: the review of the institutional and legal requirements; evaluation of the existing sanitary-biological research of the following waters in the Lake; definition of dynamics of sanitary-microbial indicators in flowing waters; study of biological characteristics of secreted pathogenic agents and definition of their vulnerability towards bacteriophages; mathematical simulation model on different scenarios of dissemination of chemical pollutants and pathogenic bacteria in the lake Paliastomi. The researchers identified that the pollution by nutrient-rich water causing large blooms of algae and aquatic plants that in its turn leaves little oxygen for fish and other aquatic animals, resulting in the eutrophication followed by suffocation of aquatic life.ConclusionsThe solution of problem requires complex respond: the selected spring sites, regular monitoring of nitrate contents and other basic physico-chemical water parameters; simultaneous, continuous discharge recording; monitoring and maintaining water levels in the wetlands; removing sediment and organic debris build up in wetland pond and etc.Mathematical modeling of dissemination of the pathogenic bacteria in the Lake Paliastomi enables us to permanently monitor not only the inflowing waters of Paliastomi Lake, but seasonal sources of bacterial pollution due to the migratory birds. In line with monitoring, localized prophylactic point sources spraying of Salmonella bacteriophage cocktail (SBC) by agricultural drones will be useful to restrain bacterial contamination.

The purpose of this article is to discuss the trajectory of Belarusian-Lithuanian relations with a particular focus on the period after the 2020 Belarusian presidential election, which resulted in a change in international relations in the region. This was the moment that redefined the Lithuanian-Belarusian relations, which until 2020 were satisfactory for both sides (especially in the economic aspect). However, Lithuania began to pursue a reactive policy of promoting the democratisation of Belarus and provided multi-level support to Belarusian opposition forces. The current problems in bilateral relations (e.g., the future of Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant located in Astravyets) have been put on the agenda for discussion at the EU level, while the instruments of a hybrid conflict in the form of an influx of immigrants into Lithuania, controlled by the Belarusian regime, have become a key issue for the future prospects of relations between Belarus and Lithuania.

The article presents the result of the analysis of the problems of maintenance of on-board pneumatic systems and units in terms of the requirements for completeness and efficiency of the requested information. It is shown that the current state of the workflow modeling tools of these systems do not fully meet the maintenance requirements at all stages of the product life cycle. An approach to modeling pneumohydraulic systems and units is proposed, as well as ways to reduce the time from the moment of setting a problem requiring the development of a new mathematical model to obtaining adequate simulation results. The efficiency of the proposed approach is demonstrated by the example of a pressure regulator operating in a dynamic mode. The possibilities and ways of implementing modeling tools based on the proposed approach are shown.

Roundabouts provide safe and fast circulation as well as many environmental advantages, but drivers adopting unsafe behaviours while circulating through them may cause safety issues, provoking accidents. In this paper we propose a way of training an autonomous vehicle in order to behave in a human and safe way when entering a roundabout. By placing a number of cameras in our vehicle and processing their video feeds through a series of algorithms, including Machine Learning, we can build a representation of the state of the surrounding environment. Then, we use another set of Deep Learning algorithms to analyze the data and determine the safest way of circulating through a roundabout given the current state of the environment, including nearby vehicles with their estimated positions, speeds and accelerations. By watching multiple attempts of a human entering a roundabout with both safe and unsafe behaviours, our second set of algorithms can learn to mimic the human’s good attempts and act in the same way as him, which is key to a safe implementation of autonomous vehicles. This work details the series of steps that we took, from building the representation of our environment to acting according to it in order to attain safe entry into single lane roundabouts.

Web services are nowadays attracting the attention of both academia and industry. However, a very little has so far been accomplished in terms of design and development methods that assist those who are responsible for specifying and running applications based on Web services. For this purpose, we developed CP4WS that stands for Context and Policy for Web Services. CP4WS is a context-based and policy-driven method for designing and developing composite Web services. Policies manage various aspects related to Web services like participation in composition and adjustment due to changes in the environment, and context provides the necessary information that enables for instance to trigger the appropriate policies and to regulate the interactions between Web services according to the current state of the environment. CP4WS consists of several steps such as user needs identification and Web services behavior specification. Each step has a specific graphical notation that facilitates the representation, description, and validation of the composition operations of Web services. A running scenario that illustrates the use of CP4WS is presented in the article as well.

It is not uncommon to find that Christians are blamed for contributing to the destruction of the environment – a view that derives from the Biblical precept that ‘man was given dominion over the earth’ (cf. Gen. 1:28). The current state of the environment indicates that humankind has indeed ravaged the earth, but it could be argued that this has occurred through greed, covetousness, materialism, competitiveness and short-sightedness which are specific human traits in conflict with God and Christianity. Furthermore, the true significance of the ‘dominion over the earth’ tenet is invariably overlooked. Having dominion over the earth means that man has the responsibility of representing God on earth; of ruling as His co-regents or, put differently, acting as His stewards or custodians of His creation. It is argued that environmental stewardship is a dimension of the Christian stewardship ethic that is inherent in the Christian faith. This article reports on research undertaken with ministers, lecturers and students of the United Reformed Church in Southern Africa who were asked to provide their views on Christian stewardship as a requisite component of their role as leaders and aspirant leaders in the Church. Perspectives on environmental stewardship as a dimension of the Christian stewardship ethic were also probed. The research showed that respondents were unanimous in their understanding that Christian stewardship is Biblically founded and mandated and that environmental stewardship is part of that ethic. However, environmental stewardship is inadequately provided for in Church teaching and seminary training programmes. This article examines respondents’ views on the above and puts forward ways in which environmental stewardship could be enhanced and promoted.

Over the past decades, wastewater research has increasingly focused on the use of microalgae as a tool to remove contaminants, entrapping nutrients, and whose biomass could provide both material and energy resources. This review covers the advances in the emerging research on the use in wastewater sector of thermoacidophilic, low-lipid microalgae of the genus Galdieria, which exhibit high content of protein, reserve carbohydrates, and other potentially extractable high-value compounds. The natural tolerance of Galdieria for high toxic environments and hot climates recently made it a key player in a single-step process for municipal wastewater treatment, biomass cultivation and production of energetic compounds using hydrothermal liquefaction. In this system developed in New Mexico, Galdieria proved to be a highly performing organism, able to restore the composition of the effluent to the standards required by the current legislation for the discharge of treated wastewater. Future research efforts should focus on the implementation, in the context of wastewater treatment, of more energetically efficient cultivation systems, potentially capable of generating water with increasingly higher purity levels.

The article provides a criminological analysis of the current state and trends of environmental crime in Ukraine as well as identifies the structure of environmental crime. The article identifies the most common types of environmental crime, including those that have global and local effect. According to the results of the research, a system of combating environmental crime is proposed supplementing it with the description and characterization of its components. An execution of systematic targeted control over the state of the environment combined with a prevention of environmental crimes by the state, society and individual citizens will become a counterbalance to the destructive attitude towards the environment and, accordingly, the basis for life safety in the ecosystem. Keywords: determinants of crime, crimes against the environment, ecology, environmental policy, judicial statistics
