The key tasks of Ukrainian companies in foreign markets are determined in the article on the basis of analysis of the actual problems of foreign economic activity. The technologies of Ukrainian companies (especially small ones) entering foreign markets are quite costly and organizationally complex. Even a once successful strategy of foreign economic activity needs continuous improvement and adjustments in line with changes in the external business environment. Priority areas, innovations, and improvements that will contribute to improving the competitive position of Ukrainian companies in foreign markets include: professional (competence, knowledge, experience), logistics (the basis of supply in foreign trade contracts), insurance (exchange rate risks), financial (currency deregulation), institutional (attraction of external investments), customs (electronic declaration), and technological. The study proved that in a competitive environment, a commercially successful strategy of foreign economic activity of Ukrainian companies can be secured through intensification of technology transfer; increase in the volume of high-tech goods trade and exports of goods (services) with high added value; use of advantage of free trade agreements; increase in exports of organic farming products; strengthening the procedures for protecting intellectual property. These components are characterized by the significant potential for increasing the competitiveness of national companies in foreign markets. Taking into account resource opportunities of Ukrainian companies and external challenges (economic, geopolitical, technological, investment), the strategic task is gradual, but the irreversible shift of trade flows from the CIS countries to the European and Asian market. Key words: business, foreign economic activity, company, competence, competition, product, rating, market, trade.

The author presents the analysis of a survey of 500 high-tech enterprises in Shanghai which was designed to examine the local social, political, and economic environment in which high-tech enterprises operate and compete. Information sought in this survey comes in two kinds: the characteristics of high-tech enterprises; and their assessments of specified elements constituting their business environment. Survey findings suggested that state-owned or quasi-state-owned enterprises are still the leading players although local private enterprises and transnational corporations are becoming indispensable actors in high-tech industrial development in Shanghai. Among these enterprises, those which are locally based are mainly small and medium-sized enterprises and are in the start-up stage of business; they are domestically oriented and are not strong enough to exploit foreign markets. Foreign-based enterprises in Shanghai are, however, mainly subsidiaries, branch plants, or assembly lines, rather than regional headquarters, suggesting that Shanghai occupies a relatively low position in the international division of labor. The second part of the survey suggests that, in boosting the development of high-tech businesses, Shanghai achieves tangible objectives and improves the physical environment efficiently. Nevertheless, it is still quite weak in some soft dimensions, such as dynamic entrepreneurial culture, adequate business-support services, sophisticated educational and professional systems, comprehensive legal framework, etc. However, these dimensions are key components of innovative milieu in which technological innovation and entrepreneurial activities are facilitated and nurtured.

For many years, Russia has benefited mainly from the sale of raw materials, but as a transition to a new level of development, ways to reduce the share of extractive industries in the economic structure were considered. With the emergence of new external factors that directly affect the demand and price formation of the country’s main export products on world markets, the need for structural reforms has become a priority for its economic system to overcome the crisis. The paper studies regional production of high-tech products, which in the future may become the basis for expanding the share of manufacturing enterprises in the volume of manufactured goods. The structure of high-tech industries located in the regions of the Central Federal district is considered, and the share of exports in the total volume of their production is highlighted. Based on Rosstat data for 2018, the types of production that are developed and require additional incentives from Executive authorities have been identified. Due to the fact that the main consumer of products with high added value is located in the domestic market, the development of a set of support measures is necessary for the growth of its export volumes. It should be based on a system of incentives for enterprises, together with the active participation of institutions involved in bringing domestic producers to foreign markets.

The scale and deep heterogeneity of the national economy of Ukraine in the regional context make the relevance of scientific research in this thematic area. The purpose of the article is to determine the economic specialization of the regions of Ukraine by key economic activities contributing to the formation of gross value added, as well as outlining the potential risks to the national economy, taking into account the situation on world commodity markets. The results of the research showed that one of the consequences of the unstable dynamics of industrial production in Ukraine under the influence of geopolitical and macroeconomic factors is the reduction of industrial specialization of the economy of a number of Ukrainian regions. Thus, in 2017 the manufacturing was the leading economic activity (with the highest share in the gross value added created) in 11 regions, compared to 15 in 2012. So Poltava, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhya regions are considered to be “highly industrial”. At the same time, the agrarian specialization of the economy of Ukraine and its regions deepened – in 2017 agriculture became the leading type of economic activity in 11 regions (compared to 7 in 2012). The most “agrarian” in Ukraine (with a share of agriculture in gross value added over 30%) in 2017 became the Kherson, Kirovohrad and Khmelnytsky regions. Increasing the level of “agrarianization” of the national economy in the context of volatility of agricultural commodity prices on the world markets poses significant risks for the socio-economic development of Ukraine and its regions. These risks are exacerbated by the high amplitude of fluctuations in the volume and structure of domestic agricultural products and the low degree of processing of raw materials. To improve the structure of domestic commodity exports (in the direction of increasing its share of products with a higher degree of processing) and to deepen its diversification, a number of measures should be carried out aimed at stimulating export activity of enterprises (industrial and agro-industrial), carrying out technical and technological re-equipment of industrial and export production bases, creation of new high-tech industries on the basis of the implementation of powerful innovation and investment projects.
