Monoammonium phosphate (MAP) is a popular starter fertilizer in Pacific Northwest tree fruit orchards; however, its use on soils contaminated with lead arsenate pesticide residues can enhance As solubility, thereby increasing As phytoavailability. `Fuji'/EMLA.26 apple trees (Malus ×domestica Borkh.) were planted in Mar. 1992 on a lead arsenate—contaminated Cashmont gravelly sandy loam soil (HCl-extractable soil As range: 60-222 mg·kg-1) using in-hole starter fertilizer application of either MAP or ammonium sulfate at equivalent N and anion rates. In ensuing years, all trees received identical applications of ammonium nitrate only. Relative trunk cross-sectional area was inversely related to soil As concentration in the year of planting but not in subsequent years, and was independent of starter fertilizer treatment. Leaf and fruit As were positively related to soil As in all years. Leaf As was initially higher in the MAP-treated trees; however, this effect diminished over time and disappeared by 1995. Fruit As was independent of starter fertilizer treatment, and was substantially lower than the tolerance established for As in fresh produce. The experimental results indicate that MAP starter fertilizer can increase soil As phytoavailability to apple trees grown under field conditions; however, the effects on tree growth and food safety are insignificant.

The aim of this research was to study the impact of application technique and rate of liquid starter fertilizer applied with a novel device on the production of corn. Starter fertilizer was applied in the root system range of freshly germinated plants in the ‘belt’ and ‘point’ forms at different quantities (35, 50, 70, and 100 L ha−1), which led to intensive plant growth in the initial stages of development. This adapted system was used for sowing and for application of the liquid starter fertilizer at the same time. The field trial was set up at two sites (two different land types), in the conditions of the natural water regime of the soil during the three vegetation seasons in the period 2016–2018. For this purpose, a prototype of the electronic device EUKU-01 was designed. The starter fertilizer was applied at 5 cm laterally from the row where the sowing was performed and 5 cm below the depth at which the corn seeds were sown. Data were statistically analyzed by two-factor analysis of variance, where the influence of mineral fertilizer treatment and the influence of liquid starter fertilizer treatment were observed as factors. The results showed that the optimal choice of the technique of liquid starter fertilizer application can result in fertilizer savings by 30% without reducing yield.

It is widely accepted that a tight coordination between carbon (C) utilization in the sink and C assimilation and metabolism in the source exists in higher plants. However, much of our current understanding is based on research from herbaceous plants, where the source and sink interaction is less sophisticated compared to woody perennials with a significant sink presence. Apple (Malus x domestica Borkh.) is a good representative of the latter category, and its production and transport of sorbitol, in addition to sucrose, adds complexity to C regulation. In this study, four-year-old “Gala”/”M.26” apple trees were subjected to crop load levels at 2.5, 7.5, and 15 fruits/cm2 trunk cross-sectional area. Low crop load trees exhibited reduced leaf C assimilation and extra accumulation of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC). This was primarily a result of reduced activity of Rubisco and increased activities of key enzymes that synthesize starch, sucrose, and sorbitol. Among the NSC, leaf starch was found to be most sensitive to crop load and could function as a leading indicator for source–sink balance in apple. However, even the high crop load trees still retained a significant amount of NSC in leaves at dawn, demonstrating that apple is fundamentally different from herbaceous plants in the way it balances leaf carbon inventories at dawn with carbon export at night for sink growth.

Objective – To survey middle managers’ beliefs regarding their participation in shared leadership and their libraries’ practices of shared leadership. Design – Cross-sectional survey. Setting – Twenty-two academic libraries within four-year public master’s level institutions in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Subjects – A total of 115 middle managers were invited to participate; 77 completed the survey for a response rate of 66.9%. Methods – Selected middle managers were contacted by email a total of five times and were invited to complete a Web-based survey composed of three sections. The first section contained 10 statements for rating shared leadership within their own institutions, which they were asked to rate on an eight-point Likert scale from 1 (strongly agree) to 7 (strongly disagree), with 8 as an option for no opinion. The second section used the same scale to rate their levels of agreement with conceptual definitions of shared leadership from Jackson’s Framework. Jackson’s Framework consists of four components for ascertaining levels of shared leadership from both managerial and staff perspectives: accountability, equity, partnership and ownership. The third section invited subjects to provide their own definition of shared leadership. A three-part pretest served to validate the survey instrument. Mean scores were calculated for each statement. Main Results – In the first section, there was the highest overall level of agreement (1.52) with the statement “I am accountable for the decisions within the scope of my responsibility” followed by “I share information with the senior library administration” (1.71). There was the lowest overall level of agreement (3.65) with the statement that “Ideas presented at all levels of staff in the library are equally considered.” In the second section, respondents’ mean scores for Jackson’s definitions of four concepts of shared leadership were 2.62 for ownership, 2.68 for both partnership and equity, and 2.77 for accountability. In the third section, respondents most often linked their definitions of shared leadership with communication, learning and collaboration. Conclusion – Examining middle managers’ perceptions of shared leadership may help us understand organizational trends and capacity for leadership within libraries. Future research could examine shared leadership at levels below middle management as well as the relationship between accountability and shared leadership throughout the organization.

Nine years after liming a sandy loam orchard soil to pH 6.0 with calcium hydroxide or dolomitic lime, pH and extractable Ca and Mg were still higher where limed than where unlimed. However, pH had decreased below 5.0 in the limed and N-fertilized plots. Delicious (Malus domestica Borkh.) apple tree nutrition benefited from the two soil amendments. Leaf Mg was increased by dolomite. Leaf Ca was increased by calcium hydroxide. Leaf Mn, although highest in unlimed soils, increased over time for both limed and unlimed soil. Red Jabon (Anthocephalus macrophyllus (Roxb.) Havil.) is one of the fast growing species that became priority to be developed in South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province. Currently the red jabon has become “Local Superior Crops” in North Maluku. One of IUPHHK in South Halmahera which develops red jabon is PT. Telagabakti Persada. The purpose of this study was to determine the best growth of red jabon seedling on urea fertilizer application. The study was conducted at PT. Telagabakti Persada, South Halmahera. The treatments of urea fertilizer were 0 g,  0.25 g, 0.50 g, 0.75 g, and 1 g. The results showed that the urea 0.25 g  fertilizer treatment resulted in the best growth of red jabon seedlings.Key words: Red Jabon, Nursery, Growth of seedling, Urea

Soybean is known for its high protein content, which is the reason why it is widely used as one of the main food sources for humans and animals. In order to optimize soybean growth, farmers tend to add excessive dosage of chemical fertilizer to this crop. Furthermore, a continuous chemical fertilizer application without organic fertilizer addition may cause a rapid depletion of nutrients in the soil. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of organic fertilizer treatment to reduce the amount of urea as chemical fertilizer needed in soybean cultivation. A complete randomized design was conducted using 21 treatments of organic and chemical fertilizer in triplicate with a 4x3 m plot size. Analysis of variance was carried out to compare the means of measurement data and Duncan multiple range test (DMRT 5%) was applied. The treatment 2,000 kg ha-1 compost + 50 kg ha-1 urea (O2K2A1) resulted the highest dry yield in soybean and had significant differences with urea-only treatment. A mixture of chemical and organic fertilizers had no significant result over the yield compared to the use of chemical fertilizer only. Compost application of 1,000-2,000 kg ha-1 with urea 50-100 kg ha-1 (O2K2A1 and O 2K1A2) showed an increase in seed yield of 35-38 % with a profit reaching 333-340 USD ha-1 compared to standard treatment using urea 50 kg ha -1 + SP-36 50 kg ha-1 + 50 KCl kg ha-1 (O0K0A1).

The purpose of the research is to study the effect of bokashi fertilizer and Green Tonik liquid fertilizer and its interaction on the growth and yield of long bean plant, as well as to find the proper dosage of bokashi fertilizer and Green Tonik liquid fertilizer concentration for obtaining the best yield of long bean.The research was conducted using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) in 4 x 4 Factorial Experiment and four replications.  The factor was the dosage of bokashi fertilizer (B) consisting of 4 levels : no bokashi fertilizer application (b0), 100 g/polybag(b1), 200 g/polybag (b2), and 300 g/polybag(b3).   The second factor was the concentration of Green Tonik liquid fertilizer (N) consisting 4 levels : no Green Tonikfertilizer application (n0), 2 ml/ l water (n1),  4 ml/l water (n2), and 6 ml/lwater (n3).The results showed that: (1) the bokashi fertilizer treatment affected significantly on the plant lenght at age 15 days after planting, number of pods and weight of pods per plant, but it did not affect significantly on the plant lenght at age 22, 29 and 36 days after planting, age of plants flowered, and pods lenght; (2)the Green Tonik liquid treatment affected significantly on the plant lenght at age 22, 29, and 60 days after plantingand weight of pods per plant, but it did not affect significantly on the plant lenght at age 15 days after planting, age of plant flowered, and pods lenght;  (3) the interaction treatment between bokashi fertilizer and Green Tonik liquid fertilizer affected significantly on the plant lenght at age 15 days after planting, pods lenght, and weight of pods per plant, but did not affect significantly on the plant lenght at age 22, 29, and 36 after planting, age of plant flowered, and number of pods; and (4) the weighest weight of pods per plant was produced in b2n3 treatment of 401,75 g/plant, while the lighest one was produced in b0n0 treatment of 145,75 g/plant.

Movement of salt in a semi-arid soil (Hanwood sandy loam) was studied in isolated columns of soil one metre in diameter and four metres deep. Where a water-table was maintained approximately 60 cm. from the surface by the addition of rain-water to the surface, salt was washed out of the surface layers and did not return. Where a water-table was maintained one metre from the surface by the addition of water from below there was a small increase in the salt concentration of the surface 10 cm. of soil. In view of these results it is suggested that some circulation of water involving lateral movement is generally associated with salt accumulation that is commonly found under field conditions.
