Hydrological information system based on on-line monitoring - from strategy to implementation in the Brantas River Basin, East Java, Indonesia

The worsening environmental situation of the Brantas River, East Java, is addressed by a comprehensive basin management strategy which relies on accurate water quantity and quality data retrieved from a newly installed online monitoring network. Integrated into a Hydrological Information System, the continuously measured indicative parameters allow early warning, control and polluter identification. Additionally, long-term analyses have been initiated for improving modelling applications like flood forecasting, water resource management and pollutant propagation. Preliminary results illustrate the efficiency of the installed system.

Στις μέρες μας, οι Τεχνολογίες Γεωπληροφορικής περιστρέφονται γύρω από εμπορικά λογισμικά & έτοιμες λύσεις, ικανοποιώντας έτσι σε αρκετά μεγάλο βαθμό τις λειτουργικές απαιτήσεις Διαλειτουργικών Οργανισμών που διαχειρίζονται χωρικά δεδομένα. Η σημερινή, όμως, τεχνολογία του Γεωγραφικού Συστήματος Πληροφοριών, Geographic Information System (GIS) επιτρέπει σε μια κολοσσιαία Χωρική Βάση Δεδομένων (Β.Δ.) ενός Οργανισμού - που απαντάται σε πολυχρηστικό περιβάλλον εργασίας - περιορισμένες λειτουργίες στην από κοινού επεξεργασία τόσο της ίδιας της Β.Δ. εν γένει, όσο και κοινών εγγραφών ειδικότερα. Μία τέτοια κοινή επεξεργασία συγχωρείται στις κλασσικές GIS υλοποιήσεις μόνο σε ένα επίπεδο συνεργασίας μεταξύ των χρηστών με τρόπο, ωστόσο, που καθιστά την επεξεργασία της ίδιας εγγραφής «συγκρουσιακή», ώστε να απαιτείται επίλυση από τρίτο χρήστη. Το φαινόμενο αυτό συναντάται συχνότατα σε Οργανισμούς που διέπονται από την Αρχή της Διαλειτουργικότητας, της διανομής δηλαδή της πληροφορίας τους εντός και εκτός Οργανισμού, και οι οποίοι διαχειρίζονται κολοσσιαία sets χωρικών δεδομένων με συναλλαγές μακρού τύπου (long term transactions). Η παρούσα διατριβή μελετά τις Σύγχρονες Χωρικές Β.Δ. (Spatial Databases) και αναλύει την εφαρμογή τους, ως ένα GIS επιδεκτικό, αυτόνομο, βασισμένο στα διεθνή πρότυπα, το οποίο φυσικά διέπεται από την Αρχή της Χωρικής Διαλειτουργικότητας. Παράλληλα, εξετάζει τα φαινόμενα που δημιουργούνται στις πολυχρηστικές αυτές χωρικές Β.Δ. και εμβαθύνει στην δημιουργία ενός αλγόριθμου: του Αλγόριθμου «FoCHAL» (Free of Conflicts Hierarchic - Altruistic Locking algorithm). Δια του αλγόριθμου FoCHAL γίνεται εφικτή η παράλληλη επεξεργασία κοινών εγγραφών από διαφορετικούς χρήστες, διατηρουμένης ακεραίας της σειριακότητας της Β.Δ. με κατάλληλη επίλυση των προβλημάτων και, μάλιστα, πλήρως αυτοματοποιημένα. Η νέα αυτή Τεχνολογία Γεωπληροφορικής εφαρμόζεται στο επιχειρησιακό μοντέλο λειτουργίας της χωρικής Β.Δ. του Εθνικού Κτηματολογίου ως ένα ανοιχτό και διαλειτουργικό GIS. Δηλαδή εκεί ακριβώς όπου αναδεικνύεται σαφέστατα ο αναπτυξιακός χαρακτήρας του Συστήματος του Εθνικού Κτηματολογίου, γεγονός που συνεπάγεται τεράστια λειτουργικά, κοινωνικοπολιτικά & οικονομικά οφέλη. Το σημαντικότερο είναι η διατήρηση της σειριακότητας της χωρικής Β.Δ. και η επίτευξη της «On-Line» λειτουργίας της. Αυτή η λειτουργία επιτρέπει την ανάπτυξη ορθολογισμένων SubLIS, διαδικασία που πηγάζει από τη χωρική διαλειτουργικότητα κι επιτρέπει την επίτευξη της ηλεκτρονικής διακυβέρνησης.

Abstract Tourist services represent a category of services in which the inseparability of production and consumption, the inability to be storable, the immateriality, and last but not least non-durability, induces in tourism management a number of peculiarities and difficulties. Under these circumstances the development of medium-term strategies involves long-term studies regarding on the one hand the developments and characteristics of the demand, and on the other hand the tourist potential analysis at regional and local level. Although in the past 20 years there has been tremendous growth of on-line booking made by household users, the tour operators agencies as well as those with sales activity continue to offer the specific services for a large number of tourists, that number, in the case of domestic tourism, increased by 1.6 times in case of the tour operators and by 4.44 times in case of the agencies with sales activity. At the same time, there have been changes in the preferences of tourists regarding their holiday destinations in Romania. Started on these considerations, paper based on a logistic model, examines the evolution of the probabilities and scores corresponding to the way the Romanian tourists spend their holidays on the types of tourism agencies, actions and tourist areas in Romania.

The use of Customer Relationship Managers to foster customers loyalty has become one of the most common business strategies in the past years.  However, CRM solutions do not fill the abundance of happily ever-after relationships that business needs, and each client’s perception is different in the buying process.  Therefore, the experience must be precise, in order to extend the loyalty period of a customer as much as possible. One of the economic sectors in which CRM’s have improved this experience is retailing, where the personalized attention to the customer is a key factor.  However, brick and mortar experiences are not enough to be aware in how environmental changes could affect the industry trends in the long term.  A base unified theoretical framework must be taken into consideration, in order to develop an adaptable model for constructing or implementing CRMs into companies. Thanks to this approximation, the information is complemented, and the outcome will increment the quality in any Marketing/Sales initiative. The goal of this article is to explore the different factors grouped by three main domains within the impact of service quality, from a consumer’s perspective, in both on-line and off-line retailing sector.  Secondly, we plan to go a step further and extract base guidelines about previous analysis for designing CRM’s solutions focused on the loyalty of the customers for a specific retailing sector and its product: Sports Running Shoes.

The article examines the impact of internal and external risks on the stability of the financial system of the Altai Territory. Classification of internal and external risks of decline, affecting the sustainable development of the financial system, is presented. A risk management strategy is proposed that will allow monitoring of risks, thereby these measures will help reduce the loss of financial stability and ensure the long-term development of the economy of the region.

AbstractUrban air pollution can have negative short- and long-term impacts on health, including cardiovascular, neurological, immune system and developmental damage. The irritant qualities of pollutants such as ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM) can cause respiratory and cardiovascular distress, which can be heightened during physical activity and particularly so for those with respiratory conditions such as asthma. Previously, research has only examined marathon run outcomes or running under laboratory settings. This study focuses on elite 5-km athletes performing in international events at nine locations. Local meteorological and air quality data are used in conjunction with race performance metrics from the Diamond League Athletics series to determine the extent to which elite competitors are influenced during maximal sustained efforts in real-world conditions. The findings from this study suggest that local meteorological variables (temperature, wind speed and relative humidity) and air quality (ozone and particulate matter) have an impact on athletic performance. Variation between finishing times at different race locations can also be explained by the local meteorology and air quality conditions seen during races.

Climate change significantly affects water supply availability due to changes in the magnitude and seasonality of runoff and severe drought events. In the case of Korea, despite high water supply ratio, more populations have continued to suffer from restricted regional water supplies. Though Korea enacted the Long-Term Comprehensive Water Resources Plan, a field survey revealed that the regional government organizations limitedly utilized their drought-related data. These limitations present a need for a system that provides a more intuitive drought review, enabling a more prompt response. Thus, this study presents a rating curve for the available number of water intake days per flow, and reviews and calibrates the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model mediators, and found that the coefficient of determination, Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), and percent bias (PBIAS) from 2007 to 2011 were at 0.92, 0.84, and 7.2%, respectively, which were “very good” levels. The flow recession curve was proposed after calculating the daily long-term flow and extracted the flow recession trends during days without precipitation. In addition, the SWAT model’s flow data enables the quantitative evaluations of the number of available water intake days without precipitation because of the high hit rate when comparing the available number of water intake days with the limited water supply period near the study watershed. Thus, this study can improve drought response and water resource management plans.

Analysis of the connection between different units that operate in the same area assures always interesting results. During this investigation, the concerned area was a virtual power plant (VPP) that operates in Poland. The main distributed resources included in the VPP are a 1.25 MW hydropower plant and an associated 0.5 MW energy storage system. The mentioned VPP was a source of synchronic, long-term, multipoint power quality (PQ) data. Then, for five related measurement points, the conclusion about the relation in point of PQ was performed using correlation analysis, the global index approach, and cluster analysis. Global indicators were applied in place of PQ parameters to reduce the amount of analyzed data and to check the correlation between phase values. For such a big dataset, the occurrence of outliers is certain, and outliers may affect the correlation results. Thus, to find and exclude them, cluster analysis (k-means algorithm, Chebyshev distance) was applied. Finally, the correlation between PQ global indicators of different measurement points was performed. It assured general information about VPP units’ relation in point of PQ. Under the investigation, both Pearson’s and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients were considered.

Obtaining large-scale, long-term, and spatial continuous soil moisture (SM) data is crucial for climate change, hydrology, and water resource management, etc. ESA CCI SM is such a large-scale and long-term SM (longer than 40 years until now). However, there exist data gaps, especially for the area of China, due to the limitations in remote sensing of SM such as complex topography, human-induced radio frequency interference (RFI), and vegetation disturbances, etc. The data gaps make the CCI SM data cannot achieve spatial continuity, which entails the study of gap-filling methods. In order to develop suitable methods to fill the gaps of CCI SM in the whole area of China, we compared typical Machine Learning (ML) methods, including Random Forest method (RF), Feedforward Neural Network method (FNN), and Generalized Linear Model (GLM) with a geostatistical method, i.e., Ordinary Kriging (OK) in this study. More than 30 years of passive–active combined CCI SM from 1982 to 2018 and other biophysical variables such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), precipitation, air temperature, Digital Elevation Model (DEM), soil type, and in situ SM from International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) were utilized in this study. Results indicated that: 1) the data gap of CCI SM is frequent in China, which is found not only in cold seasons and areas but also in warm seasons and areas. The ratio of gap pixel numbers to the whole pixel numbers can be greater than 80%, and its average is around 40%. 2) ML methods can fill the gaps of CCI SM all up. Among the ML methods, RF had the best performance in fitting the relationship between CCI SM and biophysical variables. 3) Over simulated gap areas, RF had a comparable performance with OK, and they outperformed the FNN and GLM methods greatly. 4) Over in situ SM networks, RF achieved better performance than the OK method. 5) We also explored various strategies for gap-filling CCI SM. Results demonstrated that the strategy of constructing a monthly model with one RF for simulating monthly average SM and another RF for simulating monthly SM disturbance achieved the best performance. Such strategy combining with the ML method such as the RF is suggested in this study for filling the gaps of CCI SM in China.

It is widely agreed that dynamics of building stocks are relatively poorly known even if it is recognized to be an important research topic. Better understanding of building stock dynamics and future development is crucial, e.g., for sustainable management of the built environment as various analyses require long-term projections of building stock development. Recognizing the uncertainty in relation to long-term modeling, we propose a transparent calculation-based QuantiSTOCK model for modeling building stock development. Our approach not only provides a tangible tool for understanding development when selected assumptions are valid but also, most importantly, allows for studying the sensitivity of results to alternative developments of the key variables. Therefore, this relatively simple modeling approach provides fruitful grounds for understanding the impact of different key variables, which is needed to facilitate meaningful debate on different housing, land use, and environment-related policies. The QuantiSTOCK model may be extended in numerous ways and lays the groundwork for modeling the future developments of building stocks. The presented model may be used in a wide range of analyses ranging from assessing housing demand at the regional level to providing input for defining sustainable pathways towards climate targets. Due to the availability of high-quality data, the Finnish building stock provided a great test arena for the model development.

The study of changes in river discharge is important for regional climate variability characterization and for development of an efficient water resource management system. The hydrological regime of rivers and their long-term changes in Latvia were investigated. Four major types of river hydrological regimes, which depend on climatic and physicogeographic factors, were characterized. These factors are linked to the changes observed in river discharge. Periodic oscillations of discharge, and low- and high-water flow years are common for the major rivers in Latvia. A main frequency of river discharge regime changes of about 20 and 13 years was estimated for the studied rivers. A significant impact of climate variability on the river discharge regime has been found.
