This writing is entitled “The Use of Figurative Expression in Novel ‘The Doomsday Conspiracy’ by Sidney Sheldon”. The discussion is focussed on the analysis of figurative expression in the novel. This study is aimed to identify the types of figurative expression found in the novel and to determine the meaning represented by the use of figurative expression in the novel. The novel entitled “The Doomsday Conspiracy” by Sidney Sheldon is chosen as the data source for this writing. The main theory is adopted from the book “Interpreting Literature” by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) about the theory of figurative language, namely about simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, hyperbole, metonymy, paradox, irony, dead metaphor, and allusion as a frame or reference. There are also some supporting theories, such as Halliday’s theory (1985) about the metaphorical modes of expressions and Leech’s theory (1974) about seven types of meanings. The finding of the analysis shows that the figurative expression used in the novel can be divided into three groups: (a) comparison included simile, metaphor and personification; (b) contradiction included hyperbole; and (c) connection included metonymy and allusion. But among these types of figurative expression, the groups of comparison, simile, metaphor and personification are those commonly applied in the novel, because they are used to describe the persona’s having a deep feeling which is brought by the main character in the novel.

This study aims to reveal the character of one of the main characters, Honami in the Holy Mother novel. The data source in this study is the Holy Mother novel wrote by Japanese author Akiyoshi Rikako,which has been published in Indonesia in 2016. The technique used for data collection in this study is library techniques. The method usedin conducting this research was the psychoanalysis method which was first put forward by Sigmund Freud. The results showed that based on psychoanalytic studies, the main character of the novel,a woman namedHonami, showed that the Id aspectinfluences all of herthoughts and actions. This was triggered by various events, namely herown misfortune which had many miscarriages and had a disease that made it difficult for herto get pregnant, and Kaoru's existence that changed herlife to became more meaningful. The emergence of fear and concern for her daughter because of the successive killings that struck a small child in the city where she lived, making her falsify and obscure the fact that Makoto, wascommitted murder to protect her daughter. The results also showed thatthe personality of the main character, Honami, is dominated by an element of the Egopersonality that defeats the Superego.

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan: (1) mendeskripsikan insting perilaku purposif tokoh dalam konteks keputusan menjadi seorang caleg, (2) mendeskripsikan dampak insting perilaku purposif tokoh terhadap diri tokoh mengambil keputusan novel Namaku Subardjo karya Hapsari Hanggarini. Metode yang digunakan deskriptif kualitatif. Teori yang digunakan penelitian ini teori psikologi sastra insting purposif McDougall. Sumber data secara eksplisit berupa dokumen, yaitu novel Namaku Subardjo karya Hapsari Hanggarini terbitan tahun 2015. Data penelitian berupa kalimat atau dialog, satuan cerita yang mengarah pada insting perilaku purposif yang dilakukan tokoh. Pemerolehan data menggunakan teknik membaca dan mencatat informasi terkait insting kutipan novel. Hasil penelitian dalam novel Namaku Subardj menunjukkan:  (1) bentuk perilaku insting purposif tokoh utama berupa insting menyelamatkan diri, insting penasaran, insting berkontruksi, insting penuntutan, dan insting tertawa dan (2) dampak perilaku dalam pengambilan keputusan, yakni insting perubahan perilaku purposif tokoh dengan lebih meningkatkan kualitas diri melalui literasi untuk menjadi caleg. Kata Kunci: insting, perilaku, psikologi, purposif   AbstractThe research aims to (1) describe the character’s purposive behavior instincts in the context of the decision to become a legislative candidate, (2) describe the impact of the character’s purposive behavior instincts in the novel Namaku Subardjo by Hapsari Hanggarini. The method used descriptive qualitative. The theory used research is McDougall’s purposive instinct pschology theory. The data source is explicity, the novel Namaku Subardjo by Hapsari Hanggarini published in 2015. The data of this research is in the form of sentence or dialogue, a story unit that leads to the character’s. The results of the research can be understood Namaku Subarjo’s Novel, (1) The form of purposive instinct behavior in the main character is the instict to save oneself, The curios instinct, the construct instict, the instict for prosecution and the laugh instinct, and (2) The impact of behavior in decision making is the instinct for purposive behavior. The paper approaches cultural studies in a way which tells us about a life-time story of Ned Kelly, who is a legend, an Australian hero and beloved by many Australians, through the series of 27 paintings of Sidney Nolan. Ned Kelly is an Australian icon man. Both the painter and the main character of the novel are famous and express Australianness well. In this paper, the writer bases on figurative language, the colour of paintings and the life story of the main character to show the Australian nationalism, national myth and Australianness.

AbstrakPenelitian terhadap novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga karya Tere Liye ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan kesantunan tindak tutur menyuruh pada tokoh protagonis dalam novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga karya Tere Liye. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga karya Tere Liye. Data penelitian ini adalah tindak tutur direktif menyuruh pada tokoh protagonis dalam novel tersebut. Data dikumpulkan dengan cara membaca dan memahami novel, mencatat kata, frasa, klausa, dan kalimat tokoh yang dapat dirumuskan sebagai bagian dari tuturan maupun tindak tutur menyuruh, dan menginventarisasikan data berdasarkan masalah-masalah tindak tutur direktif yang terdapat dalam novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga karya Tere Liye. Data dianalisis dan dibahas berdasarkan teori pragmatik. Dalam penelitian ini ditemukan sembilan tuturan tindak tutur direktif menyuruh, yang menunjukkan bahwa tokoh protagonis dalam novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga karya Tere Liye cenderung melakukan tindak tutur menyuruh secara santun. Strategi bertutur tokoh utama dalam novel cenderung menggunakan tindak menyuruh kepada adik-adiknya. Kata kunci: tindak tutur direktif menyuruh, pragmatik, novel, Bidadari-Bidadari Surga AbstractThis research on the novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga by Tere Liye aims to explain the politeness of the speech acts of the protagonist in Tere Liye's novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga. This type of research is qualitative research using descriptive methods. The data source in this research is the novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga by Tere Liye. The data of this research are directive speech acts ordered to the protagonist in the novel. Data were collected by understanding the novel, noting down words, phrases, clauses, or sentences that can be formulated as part of speech acts, and making an inventory of the data based on the problems of directive speech acts contained in Tere Liye's novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga. Data were analyzed and based on pragmatic theory. The results of this study shows nine directive ordered speech act utterances, which indicate that the protagonist in the novel Bidadari-Bidadari Surga by Tere Liye tends to perform speech acts politely. The strategy of telling the main character in the novel tends to use commands to order his younger siblings. Keywords: directive speech act ordered, pragmatic, novel, Bidadari-Bidadari Surga

<p><em>This study aimed to describe: (1) The character of the main character in the novel Sendalu Syafullah Chavchay work; (2) the impact of the example of the character of the main character in the novel Sendalu Syafullah Chavchay work; (3) the effect of exemplary character formation of the main characters in the novel Sendalu Syafullah Chavchay work. The data source of this research is the novel Sendalu Syafullah Chavchay works published by Kompas in Jakarta in 2006. There is no way of collecting data: (1) understand the content of the novel Sendalu; (2) mark each part novel that supports the characters; (3) the recording of data on the character by looking at the problem in a recording format; (4) pengiventarisasian inventory data in accordance with the format. Analyzing descriptively. The final conclusion (1) The main characters are bad characters such as: hipersex, violent, sadistic, cruel and rapists; (2) the impact of the example that given to the main character was the example that is not good, so the characters Lumang be bad; (3) the influence of role models on the formation of visible characters from bad influences, it was due to the influence of exemplary family environment often shows copulation in front of his own son, so there is a desire to imitate what their parents act.</em><em></em></p><p> </p><p>Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan: (1) Karakter tokoh utama dalam novel Sendalu karya Chavchay Syafullah; (2) dampak keteladanan terhadap karakter tokoh utama dalam Novel Sendalu karya Chavchay Syafullah; (3) pengaruh keteladanan dalam pembentukan karakter tokoh utama dalam novel Sendalu karya Chavchay Syafullah. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah novel Sendalu karya Chavchay Syafullah yang diterbitkan oleh Kompas di Jakarta tahun 2006. Ada pun cara pengumpulan data yaitu: (1) memahami isi novel Sendalu; (2) menandai setiap bagian novel yang mendukung karakter tokoh; (3) pencatatan data tentang karakter tokoh dengan melihat permasalahan dalam sebuah format pencatatan; (4) pengiventarisasian data sesuai dengan format inventarisasi. Penganalisisan dilakukan secara deskriptif. Hasil penelitian disimpulkan (1) karakter tokoh utama adalah karakter buruk seperti: hipersex, beringas, sadis, kejam dan pemerkosa; (2) dampak keteladanan yang yang diberikan kepada tokoh utama adalah keteladanan yang tidak baik, sehingga karakter Lumang menjadi buruk; (3) pengaruh keteladanan terhadap pembentukan karakter terlihat dari pengaruh yang tidak baik, hal itu disebabkan pengaruh dari keteladanan lingkungan keluarga yang sering memperlihatkan persetubuhan di depan anaknya sendiri, sehingga ada keinginan untuk mencontoh perbuatan yang dilakukan orangtuanya.<em></em></p>

This study aims to describe the principles of nationalism in the Jprut novel by Putu Wijaya. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data source in this research is Jprut's novel by Putu Wijaya. Data collection techniques in this research are done by reading and taking notes and analyze techniques. The reading technique is related to reading and understanding the contents of the novel, while the writing technique is used to record important data or information related to the values of nationalism contained in Jprut's novel by Putu Wijaya. The results of this study indicate four principles of nationalism from the five existing principles. First, the aspect of unity described in the spirit of mutual cooperation delivered by Bung Karno by the main character. The aspect of independence described by the main character in freedom of speech. The aspect of equality illustrated by the anger of local residents when the main character's house flew the flag upside down, and the last is the aspect of personality that is shown by the attitude of the main character that is different from other residents.

This paper informs us some motifs that motivate someone learning something taken from Laskar Pelangi novel. There are four research problems proposed of Laskar Pelangi novel; what are the literary elements of Laskar Pelangi novel; what are the motivations in learning presented in the novel of Laskar Pelangi; what are the reasons of Andrea Hirata took the motivation of learning in Laskar Pelangi novel; what are the implications of Laskar Pelangi novel toward its readers. This research uses descriptive research in analyzing, collecting the data. After analyzing the novel Laskar Pelangi the writer draws some conclusions as follows: the novel uses some figurative language to express some expressions and describe something; its main character is Ikal. Laskar Pelangi tells us some motifs of learning. The motivations which are pointed out are to enrich knowledge, to reach dream, to win a competition, and so on. The reason Andrea Hirata took learning motivation as the theme of Laskar Pelangi novel are to break Melayunese stereotype, to motivate all learner to be motivated in learning, and so on. The implication of Laskar Pelangi story toward its reader are Laskar Pelangi story motivated reader to study abroad, Laskar Pelangi teaches reader to admire the life.Keywords: learning motivation; Laskar Pelangi ; literary elements

This study aimed to describe the struggle for stereotypical elimination of women in Javanese society in the novel Entrok by Okky Madasari. This research was conducted by means of descriptive qualitative and uses a feminism approach. The data source was the novel of Entrok by Okky Madasari. The data in this study were in the form of sentences, paragraphs, dialog citations and discourses that describe the form of the struggle for stereotyped disappearances. Data collection techniques used are documentation. The data analysis technique used in this study is content analysis or content analysis, namely, research that is an in-depth discussion of the contents of written information. The results of the study show that there is an effort by the main character in removing stereotypes against women in Javanese society, especially in the field of work. The conclusion obtained is that efforts to eliminate stereotypes against women in Entrok's novel occur because the main character wants to show that women are capable of being equal to men, especially in the field of work. Women are able to prosper and elevate their social status without the help of men.

This study is entitled “Characterization and Three Dimensions of the Main Character in Looking For Alaska”. This study is concerned with the method of the characterization based on the three dimensions of the main character and intrinsic elements in the novel. The main purpose of this study is to find out how the author presents the main character in terms of the physiological, psychological, and sociological dimensions. This study was based on library research and used documentation method in collecting data. Then the data obtained were analyzed descriptively using descriptive qualitative method. Some theories of characterization were used such as the theory of characterization proposed by Kenney (1966), the theory of character dimensions by Egri (1960). The data source of this study is a novel entitled Looking For Alaska by John Green (2011). The analysis started with the overview of the biography of John Green and that was followed by the synopsis of the novel, and the data was categorized based on the theories. Based on Kenney’s theory, the main character is shaped through the mixing method of the characterization. In addition, based on Egri’s theory, there are three character dimensions (physiological, psychological, and sociological) involved in the shaping and presentation of the main character.

The purpose of this research is to explain and describe the form of id, ego, and superego in the main character in the Mata di Tanah Melus novel by Okky Madasari. The method used in this study was a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. The data source in this study was a document in the form of Mata di Tanah Melus novel by Okky Madasari, which was published by Gramedia Pustaka in 2018. The data used in this study were dialogues in the novel. The data analysis technique used in this study was the analysis of documents to find the form of id, ego, and superego in the novel. The results of this study indicate that there were forms of id, ego, and superego in Okky Madasari's Mata di Tanah Melus novel which were reflected by the main character. The forms of id, ego, and superego were found based on Sigmund Freud's personality theory. Through the form of id, ego, and superego, it can be seen how the personality of the main character in the Mata di Tanah Melus novel by Okky Madasari.
