Peatlands have specific characteristics, namely irreversible drying, so that become flammable. Peat fires have an impact on changes in soil pH. The study aimed to analyze the soil acidity after peatland fires in oil palm plantation. This study used a survey method on two main plots (low and high fire intensity). Samples were taken at two soil depth including 0-10 cm and 11-30 cm in three zones (fertilization area, harvest path and frond pile zone) and repeated three times. Data were analyzed by ANOVA using the 5% nested test, then LSD test, and analyzed for correlation. The results showed that the soil pH on all land was included in the very acid category. Soil pH in the land B (land with high fire intensity) is higher than those in the land A (land with low fire intensity), both in top soil and sub soil. The micro-nutrient elements of Fe and Al in the land B are lower than land A, while the micro-nutrients of Mn in land B are higher than land A. The correlation of soil pH towards Fe and Al is negative, while for Mn is positive (pH increases, acid cations of Fe and Al will decrease while acid cations of Mn will increase). This was presumably due to competition in occupying the land-catchment complex.

Agricultural practices, especially land clearing by burning in peat-land, usually causes land-fire and result in nutrient degradation of peat-land. The research was aimed to assess nutrient content (i.e. C, N, P) in oil palm plantation within peatlands post land fire. The study was conducted on Tulang Bawang regency, Lampung Province. Soil samples were collected from two locations with different intensity of land fire, i.e. field with low intensity of land fire (land A) and land with high intensity of land fire (land B). In each land, the soil was taken from two depths (i.e. 0-10 cm and 10-30 cm) in three different zones of oil palm plantation, named as fertilization area, frond stack, and harvested path, with three replications of each. The variable measured including soil organic C, total N, and available P. Prior to statistical analysis, the data were tested normality. The result showed that the location with low intensity of land fire (land A) had higher soil organic C, total N, and available P at 0-10 cm and 10-30 cm depths of soil as compared to the area with high land fire intensity (land B). Application of N fertilizer and liming resulted in a higher total N at 0-10 cm depth of soil and available P (in the land A) in fertilization area as compared to frond stack and harvest path areas, both in land A and land B. Available P in land B at 0-10 cm and 10-30 cm soil depth in the fertilization area was lower than harvest path and frond stack areas, and this was probably due to the high losses through leaching and/or uptake by palm oil.

Development of oil palm plantation on peatland was faced with hydrophobicity problem caused by over drained. Hydrophobicity could reduce water retention and nutrient availability in the peat soil. Beside of proper water management application, addition of soil ameliorant which contain iron could increase stability and improve peat soil fertility. The study was conducted to obtain the effect of steel slag on peat soil properties and hydrophobicity. In this study, peat soil was incorporated with steel slag and incubated in 60 days period. The research was employed completely randomized design (CRD) factorial 2 x 2 x 4. First factor is peat maturity consists of two levels: sapric (S) and hemic (H), while the second factor is soil moisture which also consist of two levels: field capacity (W1) and dry (under the critical water content) (W2). The third factor is steel slag dosage which consist of four levels: 0 g pot (TB0), 7.17 g pot (TB1), 14.81 g -1 -1 pot (TB2), and 22.44 g pot (TB3). The result showed that application of steel slag significantly increase of soil pH, ash content, and water retention at pF 4.2. Furthermore, application of steel slag significantly reduce time for water reabsorption (wettability) in sapric. On the other hand, there are negative corellation between water penetration and soil pH, ash content, and water retention at pF 4.2. Overall, application of steel slag could increase wettability and prevent peat soil hydrophobicity.

The study was conducted to investigate fertility status under four different land use types (oil palm plantation, pineapple orchard, cassava cultivated land and fallow land use system) in Umuekem, Ohaji/Egbema of Imo State, Nigeria. Composite samples were collected from various depths (10-15cm, 15-30cm, 30-45cm) across these land use patterns and analyzed in the laboratory using the standard procedure. Data generated were subjected to statistical analysis. Results obtained showed significant differences (p ≥ 0.05) in silt-clay ratio, bulk density, total porosity, water holding capacity, soil pH, organic carbon, available phosphorus, TN and ECEC across the four land use types studied. The soils were predominantly loamy sand surface and sandy clay loam in the subsoil exception of pineapple orchard with sandy loam topsoil over sandy clay loam subsoil. The silt clay ratio (SCR) showed ranges of 0.10-0.30, 0.10-0.36, 0.07 – 0.30, and 0.06- 0.20 in land use types of oil palm plantation, pineapple orchard, cassava cultivated land and fallow land respectively. The bulk density ranged of (1.61 – 1.77 g/cm3) for oil palm, (1.34 – 1.58 g/cm3) for pineapple (1.42 – 1.49 g/cm3) cassava and (1.45 – 1.48 g/cm3) in forest land use system. The soils of the four land use types were generally acidic. The mean values of soil pH (H20) were oil palm plantation (5.11), pineapple orchard (5.03), cassava cultivated land (5.35) and fallow land (5.40). The soil pH recorded low variation in all the land use types. The organic carbon and total nitrogen recorded high variation (>52.57% < 85.67%, >79.19 < 95.77) in all the different land use types. Calcium-magnesium ratio (Ca: Mg) recorded high variation (37.36%) in forest land use system, low variation (18.77%) in pineapple orchard and moderate in cassava (27.51%) and oil palm plantation (28.23). The low Ca: Mg ratio inhibits uptake and causes Ca deficiency thereby resulting in low fertility status of the soil. C: P recorded high variation (≥ 53.77% ≤ 77.73%) in all the studied land use types. O.C correlated positively and highly significant with available phosphorus, ECEC and T.N. The findings also indicated that bulk density correlated positively with ECEC and percentage base saturation. It is recommended that land use approach should be adopted for effective and sustainable management of the soil fertility. Keywords: Fertility status, Soils, Land use types

Seasonal variation in the response of crops and pastures to limestone application has been observed on acidic soils in south-eastern Australia. Our hypothesis was that temporal variation in soil acidity related factors may contribute to this variable response. Soils from 4 annual pasture sites were sampled at least monthly for 3 years during 1988–1990 to monitor changes in pH(CaCl2) and in concentrations of exchangeable aluminium (Al) and manganese (Mn). The sites received no fertiliser or cultivation and therefore allowed for the estimation of natural temporal variation. Temporal variation in soil pH during a year ranged from 0 to 0·45 pH units depending on the site, soil depth, and the weather conditions. The larger changes in soil pH were associated with more extreme climatic conditions than normal, e.g. following the break of season after a hot, dry summer (autumn 1988) or during periods of above-average rainfall in autumn and early spring (1990). Temporal variation in pH was less than the spatial variability at the sites but greater than the long-term net acidification rate reported for the region. Temporal variation in the concentration of exchangeable Al ranged from 0 to 0·4 cmol(+)/kg during a year and varied primarily with the inverse of pH. Variations in the concentration of exchangeable Mn ranged from 0·05 to 0·35 cmol(+)/kg during a year. The concentration of exchangeable Mn increased over summer to an extent dependent on the drying of the soil. At the 2 sites with duplex profiles, maxima in the concentration of exchangeable Mn also occurred in spring, particularly in the warm wet spring of 1990. Soil tests for soil acidity therefore represent guides to probable risks of toxicity, as pH and the concentrations of exchangeable Al and Mn may change between soil sampling, sowing, and the period of crop or annual pasture growth. Such variations will alter the responsiveness of crops and pastures to lime.

Abstract This study aims to determine the production of oil palm with a different replanting system. The study was conducted in the area of simultaneous fallen replanting system and underplanting system area located in Panca Mulya Village, Sungai Bahar District, Muaro Jambi Regency. The material used in this study was the Tenera variety of oil palm plants aged 4.5 years and 5.5 years. The study used a survey method with systematic sampling method. The main variables observed were plant production as well as physical plant additional variables, soil pH, light intensity, temperature, and humidity. The results showed that the replanting system significantly affected the production of oil palm plants and plant physicality, soil pH, light intensity, temperature, and air humidity. Palm oil crop production is higher in areas with simultaneous fallen replanting systems. Key words: replanting system, oil palm

The aim of this study was to reveal the increase of farmer family income at oil palm plantation and dairy farm in supporting the comodity of plantation in Indonesia especially Riau Province. Survey method was applied in this study in which the samples were collected as the purposive sampling. Result of the experiment showed that integratiob system of raising cow within oil palm plantation might have a good petency in supporting the development of the oil palm plantation. Cows would provide organc fertilizer and improve the soil tecture and this integration system could reduce the production cost. Selection of farmer could be based on location determination, program socialisation, participative plan, development activity and evaluation of program. This program could contribute to the farmer income that could be an alternative side income  especially during low oil palm price. The farmer income  was around  Rp 3.600.000 ha-1 farmer-1 from at oil palm plantation and Rp 4.819,500,- month-1 farmer-1. The total farmer income was around Rp 8.419,500,-

Smallholder oil palm plantation as part of the estate still face several constraints, including lack of productivity, institutional inactivity, plantation management that do not meet the standard, farmers' lack of knowledge, and difficulty in obtaining credit. Due to these constraints, oil palm plantation sustainability is put into priority. Oil palm development issues are discussed not only on the economic aspects but also on the environmental aspects. This research is aimed at analyzing the level of oil palm sustainability and evaluating the condition of smallholder oil palm plantations according to the stages of plant development. This research used survey method and was carried out in tidal lowlands of Pulau Rimau Sub-district, Banyuasin Regency in August-September 2019. Smallholder oil palm households were selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. The results showed that there were three aspects of sustainability that were in low criteria, namely institutional, social, and technical aspects. Whereas, economic and environmental aspects were in medium criteria. The average sustainability value of non productive and productive oil palm plantations was in low criteria. Smallholder oil palm households were expected to understand and follow the standards set by ISPO, with the support from local governments and related agencies.

Partnership is a business strategy that performed by two or more parties in a certain period to obtain the benefits together with the principle of mutual need and mutual rearing. The study aims to observe and assess the implementation of the oil palm agribusiness partnerships and analyze the level of farmers’ income. This research used a survey method. Descriptive analysis is used in data analysis, to provide an overview of the implementation of partnerships applied by oil palm plantation companies in Jambi Province. The results showed that agribusiness partnerships that implemented by the palm oil company basically has managed to create independent farmers who can canalize the aspirations of farmers, both in KKPA and PIR Trans pattern. Empirically, the maximum value and benefit aspects of process management partnerships as an indicator of the level of performance partnerships oil palm plantation companies in Jambi Province is quite high, has reached 82.5%. But these facts have not been fully supported by a partnership of cooperation actors, in the sense that the level of achievement of the implementation aspects of the value of partnership firm activities and performance of oil palm plantations has reached approximately 71%

Population and activity of soil microorganisms can be used as indicators in soil management. This research aims to examine the population and activity of peat soil microorganisms based on the depth and age of oil palm plantations. This research is located in Katapiang, Batang Anai Subdistrict, Padang Pariaman District, which peat land is used for palm oil plantations and it getsa minimal plantation management. The research uses survey method in four stages: preparation, pre survey, main survey and sampling, laboratory analysis and data processing. Samples taken on peat land that planted with palm oil  from ages 0-5 years, 5-10 years, 10-15 years, and samples from natural peatlands. Sampling at depths of 0-20 cm, 20-40 cm, and 40-60 cm. From the data analysis, the soil microorganisms population is decreasing with the increase of palm oil plantations age. The bacterial and fungal populations mostly are on the surface. Meanwhile, the highest activity of microorganisms is on 5-10 years palm oil land. Phosphate solvent bacteria mostly found in 5-10 yearspalm oil. Ground water level, water content and soil pH also affect the population and activity of soil microorganisms.
