Purpose This paper aims to examine the business communication skills that accounting students see as having the highest importance for career success. It also explores the current levels of development of these skills and analyzes them through a comparative study between three Tunisian business schools. Design/methodology/approach The authors used a questionnaire sent to180 students from three business schools to provide insights into the development of communication skills perceived important for a successful accounting career. Findings The results indicate that all students are conscious of the importance held by communication skills for career success in the accounting profession. However, they feel that their aptitudes are sometimes poorly developed, especially when it comes to proficiency in French (as a language of business in Tunisia) and written skills. Practical implications The paper’s findings offer important guidance concerning the communication skills that accounting students consider most needed by the Tunisian labor market. The findings of this study may be useful for curriculum development in local and international contexts. Originality/value This study is conducted in a developing country where the graduate unemployment rate is about 30 per cent. This high unemployment often affects service professions like accounting. Moreover, in Tunisia, accounting education focuses particularly on technical aspects. So far, no studies have been conducted to show whether students nowadays are aware of the increasing importance of generic skills in accounting practice. As a result, the conclusions of this study could provide Tunisian stakeholders with insights into ways of potentially improving accounting graduates’ employability.

Social learning in childhood is realized under the influence of many factors, among which is the leading role of the family. The specifics of the article present results, analytical characteristics and conclusions related to the role of electronic media for the production of prosocial and (or) aggressive behavior in preschool childhood, through the orientations of parents to the negative personal qualities built under their influence. The conclusions reflect the adequate perception of the parents about the negative patterns of behavior and the stereotypes planted by the electronic media. Respondents are of the opinion that their children are not attracted to programs and characters from the electronic media because of the conflicts and aggression. At the same time, the answers do not show that children are attracted by their positive antipodes – tolerance, good manners, communication skills. This means that the family underestimates the „attack“ of the electronic media in preschool age and there is a high probability that the family compensatory will be doomed in the following age periods.

The main objective of this paper is to investigate the mediating role of subjective career success (SCS) in the relationship between proactive personality, social support (SS), and pre-retirement anxiety. Using a two-wave longitudinal design, 624 pre-retirees were sampled (M = 56.49 years; SD = 4.56); of these, 237 (37.98%) were males and 387 (62.02%) were females. Measurement model and mediation test were performed using the SmartPLS and IBM SPSS Amos software. The result indicated that proactive personality, SS, and SCS showed negative relationships with the dimensions of pre-retirement anxiety (financial preparedness, social obligation, and social alienation). Subjective career success mediated the relationship between proactive personality and pre-retirement anxiety.

The division of family responsibilities, which are designed for each household member and harmonious family relationships are one of the most important keynotes of St. John’s Chrysostom preaching. In order to explain this issue he wrote homily on the Epistle to the Ephesians. According to it, the role of father in household is based on following Christ. Husbant’s relationship to his wife, especially respect for her, should be built by analogy to the relationship between Christ and the Church. The author calls the family a “small church”, comparing it to the Church as the Mystical Body. Living of the “small Church” is permeated with prayer and Holy Scripture reading. Firstly husband – the head of the family, performs the following Christian actions: reads inspired texts, strengthens himself by the sacrament of the Eucharist (that is , he takes the Holy Communion). And thanks to that going to church and celebrate the Lord’s Day, are the usual practice of all members of the parva Ecclesia.

Abstract. Building on social capital theory, we assumed that social skills (communication skills, cooperation skills) are essential for successful career development, particularly in social professions. Applying a mixed-method approach, we integrate data from a questionnaire study with 164 psychologists (Study 1) and an interview study with 20 psychologists (Study 2). In Study 1, we found communication skills to be related to objective career success (salary, position), whereas cooperation skills were associated with subjective career success (job satisfaction, goal attainment). Further, the interaction of communication and cooperation skills revealed marginal effects on career success. To gain a broader understanding of the self-estimated role of social skills, in Study 2 qualitative data were considered. In line with professional competence models, we found four broad categories of skills that psychologists report to be useful in their professional work. Social skills accounted for 35.5 % of the responses, highlighting their unique role in social professions.

This study sought to investigate the role of emotional intelligence in both extrinsic and intrinsic career success in early and later career stages. Specifically, we examined the predictive and incremental validity of emotional intelligence in career success after controlling for personality factors in a sample of 271 graduates. When analyzing extrinsic career success, regression analyses revealed that demographic variables, such as gender, age, area of study and career stage, and the variable of proactive personality, were related to salary. When the dependent variable was job satisfaction, emotional intelligence acted as a strong predictor, even when personality traits and proactive personality were controlled. These findings provide preliminary evidence that emotional intelligence is a relevant addition to guide the achievement of career success. Finally, limitations of the results and implications of these findings are discussed.

A broad review of existing literature on barriers to women's career advancement suggests that one of the most important reasons inhibiting women's rise to the top positions in management is the work-life conflict that women professionals experience because of their strong commitment to family responsibilities. The primary objective of this study is to understand the impact of family responsibilities on the career decisions of women professionals and also to find out the type of work-life support they would require from their employers to balance their work and life in a better manner. The study is conducted with 121 women professionals working in government services, public sector, private sector, and in NGOs across different levels. The perception of women professionals regarding the barriers against their career advancement is studied. The impact of demographic factors like managerial level, marital status, and family structure on all the above-mentioned issues are also analysed. Following are some of the major findings of the study: Apart from other factors, ‘commitment to family responsibility’ and ‘lack of gendersensitive policies by the employer’ are considered as important barriers which affect the career advancement of women professionals to senior positions. Senior and middle level professionals believe more strongly than the junior level women professionals that commitment to family responsibility hinders women professionals' advancement. Family responsibility considerably affects the career decisions of women professionals. It is generally expected that the female spouse should take care of the family responsibility. Women professionals agree that children's responsibility hinders their ability to advance. They think that they are not able to utilize their full potential and at times they have to make career trade-offs because of the family responsibilities. They also believe that putting career ahead of family leads to social disapproval and rejection and at the middle level of their career, the pressure for conforming to the societal norms could be more. The research reveals the expectations of the women professionals in terms of the support that organizations can provide to help them in achieving better work-life balance and advance in their career. A significant percentage of respondents have shown their strong preference for provisions like flexible working hours, childcare facilitates and emergency care for children and elders, support for non-work commitment, wellness, and personal development programmes. Half of the women professionals agree that “flexibility in work location” (working from home⁄telecommuting) can be taken up as an additional support provision. The requirement for all these work-life provisions are felt more at the middle and junior level rather than at the senior level.
