The structures of anhydrous nickel, niobium, and tantalum chlorides have been investigated in situ in acidic and basic ionic liquids (ILs) of 1-methyl-3-ethylimidazolium chloride (EMIC)/AlCl3 with X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The coordination of NiCl2 changes from tetrahedral in basic solution to octahedral in acidic solution. The NiCl2 is a strong Lewis acid in that it can induce the AlCl3 to share its chlorides in the highly acidic IL, forming a structure with six near Cl− ions and eight further distant Al ions which share the chloride ions surrounding the Ni2+. When Nb2Cl10, a dimer, is added to the acidic or basic solution, the dimer breaks apart and forms two species. In the acid solution, two trigonal bipyramids are formed with five equal chloride distances, while in the basic solution, a square pyramid with four chlorides forming a square base and one shorter axial chloride bond. Ta2Cl10 is also a dimer and divides into half in the acidic solution and forms two trigonal bipyramids. In the basic solution, the dimer breaks apart but the species formed is sufficiently acidic that it attracts two additional chloride ions and forms a seven coordinated tantalum species.

A proton NMR study was performed on the copper(ll)-ciprofloxacin system. The proton relaxation times (T1) were determined from the titration data in acidic and basic media. In acidic medium the H5 signal is dramatically affected and it is assumed that copper is bonded to the quinolone through carbonyl and one of the carboxyl oxygens. Such bonding is in agreement with the X-ray literature data for the complex [Cu(cf)2]Cl2.6H2O isolated from the slightly acidic solution. There are additional significant changes in T1 of H3′ and H5′ atoms which suggest that the terminal nitrogen atom of the piperazine ring system-N4′ also interacts with copper in the basic conditions. Thus it is plausible that more than one species are present in the solution at high pH values.

Phenylboronic acid-bearing polyamidoamine dendrimer (PBA-PAMAM)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) multilayer films were prepared through the layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition of PBA-PAMAM solution and PVA solution. PBA-PAMAM/PVA films were constructed successfully through the formation of boronate ester bonds between the boronic acid moiety in PBA and 1,3-diol units in PVA. When the (PBA-PAMAM/PVA)5 films were immersed in rose bengal (RB) solution, RB was adsorbed onto the LbL films. The amount of RB adsorbed was higher in the LbL films immersed in acidic solution than in basic solution. The release of RB from the LbL films was also promoted in the basic solution, while it was suppressed in the acidic solution. The boronic acid ester is oxidized to phenol by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and the carbon-boron bond is cleaved, so that the (PBA-PAMAM/PVA)5 films can be decomposed by immersion in H2O2 solution. Therefore, when RB-adsorbed (PBA-PAMAM/PVA)5 films were immersed in H2O2 solution, the release of RB was moderately promoted when the solution was weakly acidic.

As a surface technology, electroless plating is applied to almost every industry branch. To improve the wettability of SiC powder and metal, the surface of SiC powders was plated with a Ni plating in the basic solution according to the reaction theory of electroless plating. The main salting was nickel chloride, and the reducing agent was hydrazine hydrate. The plating velocity, phase transformation and microstructurewere investigated using XRD and SEM. The results show that the SiC powders had no increasing weight and no reaction can occur when the pH below 8.5. when the pH value was between 10 and 11, the weight gain of powders closed to the theoretical value, the Ni peaks in X-ray diffraction patterns of powders was relatively strong, the SiC coating surface was composed of granular, cellular and globe-like Ni, the substrate was covered of Ni plating completely. When the pH value was above 11, the gas production was becoming more pronounced and the reaction speed increasing with the increased of the pH value, the time from deep blue to colorless of solution started to drop off, the Ni(OH)2peaks in X-ray diffraction patterns of powders have already begun to emerged and a small amount of nickel films was generated.

Three different kinds of morphologies including spherical, chainlike and wirelike cobalt nanopowders, have been synthesized by chemical reduction of coblat chloride solution with hydrazine hydrate in basic solution. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). It was revealed that the morphologies of the nanopowders depend on the concentration of Co2+ and the way of adding reducing agent (hydrazine hydrate). These two features affected the nucleation sites and the number of nucleuses. When the concentration of Co2+ was low, nucleuses formed in the soft template, while the reducing of the reducing agent added drop wise, a little number of nucleuses was formed. Based on that, a mechanism of formation, as a basis of gram-scale syntheses, was proposed.

ZnS thin films were deposited on indium–tin-oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates by a chemical bath deposition method. Then the ZnS/ITO slides were immersed in the solution containing 6 mM phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.4), sodium polyacrylate (0.01% w/w), and 0.24 mM AgNO3 at 37°C for 3 h to growth Ag2S films on the surface of ZnS/ITO slides. The absorption band of Ag2S/ZnS/ITO slide displays a considerably blue-shifted. The X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated the presence of acanthite Ag2S on the surface of ZnS/ITO slides, which is consistent with the cyclic voltammetic data.

Bioceramics with different Ca/P ratio were prepared from a mechanical mixture of NaPO3, CaCO3, Ca(OH)2 and phosphate buffer solution and implanted in rats subcutaneous tissues. The cements were characterized by Thermogravimetric analysis (TG-TDA), X-ray diffraction and 31P-NMR. The implant sites were excised after 1, 4 and 16 weeks, fixed, dehydrated, included in paraffin wax for serial cutting and examined under the light transmitted microscope. They were biocompatible and biodegradable when implanted in rat subcutaneous. None of the materials induced ectopic osteogenesis. According to the results, the studied materials seem to be able for manufacturing reabsorbable bone implants.

The ZnSe thin films are co-deposited in the ZnSO4, Na2SeO3 and sodium citrate acidic solution, and the mechanism of the ultrasonic and pulse electrodeposition for ZnSe films is explained by the electrode-solution interface action model. Ultrasonic increases the activation energy of the [ZnCit]- and HSeO3 - and improves flow field of the solution between electrode and solution interface. The pulse current promotes the diffusion of solution and advantageously realizes the co-deposition of ZnSe films. The ZnSe thin films are pulse electrodeposited in zinc sulfate, selenite sodium and sodium citrate acidic solution with the action of ultrasonic. Finally, the ZnSe films have been characterized by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the energy dispersion analysis of X-ray (EDAX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Three new cage peroxides, 1,6-diaza-3,4,8,9-tetraoxabicyclo[4.4.2]dodecane (3a),1,6-diaza-3,4,8,9-tetraoxa-11-methylbicyclo[4.4.2]dodecane (3b), and 1,6-diaza-3,4,8,9-tetraoxatricyclo[4.4.2.411,12]hexadecane (4), have been prepared by reaction of 1,2-diaminoethane, 1,2-diaminopropane, and trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane, respectively, with formaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide in aqueous acidic solution. Their structures have been established by X-ray diffraction, and show the bridgehead nitrogen atoms to be predominantly sp2 hybridized. The structures accord with 1H and 13C NMR spectra. Variable temperature NMR studies show that the diperoxide 3a begins to undergo rapid inversion (on the NMR time scale) at about 303 K; up to 370 K the diperoxides 3b and 4 show no conformational change.Key words: cage compounds, formaldehyde, peroxides, amine nitrogen, hybridization.
