This study aimed to observe image construction of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) based on six articles of the Jakarta Post Online News about the FPI’s protest toward three issues: Ahmadiyah, the arrival of Lady Gaga in Indonesia, and Ahok as the substitute governor of Jakarta. The author qualitatively explored the FPI’s image using Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics (SFL), which defines the types of process in a clause. The author also analyzed the thematic structure of the clause to support the analysis of each type of process. The result was approximately 208 clauses from the six news articles. This study shows that the dominant process in the above-mentioned three issues is the material process. The material process represents 51% in the issue of Ahmadiyah, 41% in the issue of the arrival of Lady Gaga, and 70% in the issue of Ahok as Jakarta’s substitute governor. This material process shows that the Jakarta Post Online News constructed a negative image of the FPI’s by reporting this organization’s action during the protest. In the issue of Ahmadiyah, the FPI was framed as anarchist, while in the issue of Ahok and of Lady Gaga it was represented as protestor. The analysis of thematic structures shows the FPI as the dominant topical theme, which indicates the FPI was the main topic of the articles.

Four suicide notes written by three famous people, Jiah Khan, Kevin Carter, and Virginia Woolf, were analyzed in this study. Systemic Functional Linguistics theory especially about transitivity proposed by Halliday is used to see the ideational meaning of all four suicide notes by identifying the elements of the clauses. This study was conducted with a qualitative method assisted by a descriptive statistical method to see the spread and functions of the elements of transitivity in the suicide notes. To analyze the text based on the theory of transitivity, the text is divided into clauses based on the type of process, then each element of the existing process, participant, and circumstantial element is calculated. The results show that out of 170 total processes found, the material process (42.94%) is the most dominant process, followed by the mental process (28.82%), the relational process (19.41%), the verbal process (5.29%), the behavioral process (2.94%), and the existential process (0.59%). Just like the process type, from the two types of participants (who are directly involved and obliquely involved) that exist, actor (22.88%) and scope (15.36%) which are the participants of the material process are the most dominant participants. While the existent (0.31%) which is the participant of the existential process, has the lowest occurrence frequency. For the circumstantial element, location which consists of place and time is the most dominant circumstantial element. The location accounts for 44% of the circumstantial elements in all four suicide notes. Furthermore, Jiah Khan’s suicide note with the material process as the most dominant process describes the unpleasant behavior she experienced, which then leads to betrayal, sacrifice, self-destruction, loss, and loneliness. Whereas Kevin Carter’s suicide note with the relational process of attributive as the most dominant process describes regret, pressure, and despair. Then both Virginia Woolf’s suicide notes show how she blamed herself for what happened although it has different dominant processes between the first suicide note and the second suicide note.

This research is aimed at describing the English sentences used on the experiential meaning in the drink labels. Butt, et al. (1996:44) introducing us to the notion that language simultaneously performs three functions (experiential, interpersonal and textual) and one of the functions which is focused on the process is that experiential meanings. The objectives of this research are to investigate clauses and their constituents realized in the English sentences on the drink labels and to map out the experiential meanings realized in the clauses in the drink labels. The writer used qualitative descriptive analysis to find out the characteristics of English sentences used in the drink labels. The object of the study is the sentences used in the drink labels. The unit analysis is a clause used in the drink labels. The data were collected by the use of documents. To analyze the data, Method of data analysis, the writer took some steps; there are identification of 19 products of the drink labels, identification of the labels, identification of the sentences used in the drink labels, and identification of the experiential meaning. The result shows that, the 19 drink labels have 79 clauses and each clause has different constituents there are two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten constituents. The dominant constituent is nine constituents. Discussion on Experiential meaning, there are participant, process, and circumstance. The dominant process is material process. It has 50 clauses. Then the relational process is lees dominant, it has 29 clauses. In addition, the last process is projecting. It has no clauses. It is suggested that labels are good media for teaching English, especially systemic functional linguistics. By understanding the meaning of the labels, students and or readers are able to get the knowledge about the meanings of the clauses in the drink labels. They also can get the benefit of consuming the drinks. The other researchers would be able to continue analyzing for the next steps using different point of views.

This study of the transitivity system aims to identify and describe the type of transitivity, namely the process, participant, and circumstance which appeared in Jokowi and Prabowo campaign speech in 2019. The method used was qualitative method and researcher as key instrument in this study. The method used in collecting data was Metode Simak which proposed by Sudaryanto (2018). Data collected were analyzed by using the theory of Halliday (1985), namely Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) which focused on transitivity system. The results of the study based on data analysis show that there are 24 data or about 32% material process as dominant process that found in Jokowi campaign speech, the most dominant participant is actor that found about 15.1% or 23 data , and time as the most dominant of circumstance that found about 21.4% or 9 data. Whereas in Prabowo's campaign speech found that the most dominant process that used is material process about 37.5% or 30 data with the most dominant participant, namely actor and goal that have the same amount of data about 28 data or 18.2%, the circumstance type which is the most dominant used namely place about 11 data or 26.8%. The most dominant transitivity process used by the two presidential candidates shows that the two presidential candidates try to convey things related to the activities or actions that will be done by each presidential candidate if they are elected to become president of Indonesia in 2019-2024 period.

This paper aims at exploring how ideology is construed in a text and how the text bears significant meaning potentials. Drawing on Systemic-functional Linguistics (Halliday and Matthiessen, 2014), particularly on the Transitivity analysis, it examines how language serves in terms of two folds of structural social semiotics and ideology representation. The study probes out how the constituent analysis (Transitivity analysis) could be significant in unfolding the meaning potential of a text. The data was taken from the text of the poem ‘Jibra.īl -o-Iblīs'. The data was comprised of the twenty-two sentences taken from the text of the poem which was later on transliterated and translated for the purpose of analysis. The purposive sampling tool has been significantly helpful in the excerption of data, and a mixed-method approach has been employed in terms of analysis. Findings suggested that the poem reflects five process types which were Material, Mental, Verbal, Relational, and Existential and the participants been detected were Actor, Goal, Scope, Range, Beneficiary, Target, Senser, Phenomenon, Verbiage, Sayer, Token, Value, Attribute, Carrier and Existent. Also, the types of circumstance detected in the analysis were Circumstance of Manner, Location, Role, Contingency, Angle, Cause, Accompaniment, and Extent. To configure the dominant process type, Bungin’s statistical approach (2001) was employed. And, it is acknowledged that the dominant process type in the poem was the verbal process (47%) and the subsequent was the material process (27%). Findings also foreshadow that poem's meaning potential is blueprinted on a spiritual aura which is being communicated mainly through the verbal process and material process subsequently. This paper focuses only on the transitivity analysis the future researches could be done about interpersonal or textual metafunction analysis of the poem.

The objective of the research is to investigate the use of transitivity process in students' descriptive text and to find out the most dominant process of transitivity used. The data analyzed were 46 clauses taken from descriptive text written by six students of tenth grade of senior high school. In this research, the writers used descriptive qualitative method. The result of the research showed that there were 4 types of processes that occurred in the data, they were: material process (8, 70%), mental process (17, 39%), relational process (45, 65%), and existential process (28, 26%). While, behavioral and verbal process were not found. The most dominant process found was relational process. It implies that students were aware how descriptive text should be written, since one of language features in descriptive text is using clauses with relational process.

Cast within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics, this paper sheds new light on the ‘thematic management’ of discourse and its interaction with ‘rhetorical management’ in particular, by exploring how the interplay between thematic structure and thematic progression is instantiated in a specific genre, news reports, in English and Spanish. The study shows that, even though there exist a number of differences that are language-determined, genre constraints seem to exert a greater influence because, generally speaking, English and Spanish news reports show greater similarities than differences.

The article analyzes syntactic potential of constructing the image of Ukraine in modern mass media. The author argues for the need to apply a comprehensive approach to the analysis of language tools of image construction. In particular, the scholar emphasizes the importance of exploring different types of image media texts that are the main carriers of image information about the country. The scientist’s attention is focused on the ambivalence of most image texts, which, depending on the author's intention, subjective interpretation of the information covered can have both a positive and a negative impact on the state image. The paper consistently proves that the features of constructing the image of Ukraine are most clearly revealed at the syntactic level, which is explained by the specific intonation of the phrase, the emotional-evaluative nature of the presentation of the material, etc. The image potential of different types of oppositions, where the first component forms a positive state image and the second component contributes to the formation of a negative image of Ukraine, is analyzed. Moreover, a highly productive syntactic tool for shaping the image of the country is syncrisis based on contextual opposition. Equally effective in the process of constructing the state image is the use of expressive syntax. Thus, in particular, the use of rhetorical exclamations in image media publications with meliorative meaning contributes to the construction of a positive state image. At the same time, rhetorical questions introduced into the image text often have pejorative semantics and thus form a negative image of Ukraine. In addition, effective syntactic means of creating state image in media are anepiphor, parceling and antiphrase statements that emphasize the author's attitude to the events described. The conducted research convinces that the syntactic system of language represents a wide palette of expression of author’s modality, subjective-evaluative interpretation of information and, as a result, the image of the state that is formed in the mass consciousness.
