The review provides an updated overview of the phytochemical and pharmacological studies on Pterocarpus santalinus. It briefs on the synergistic interactions of P. santalinus with other medicinal plants and its use in Ayurvedic formulations. Phytochemical analysis suggests the presence of triterpenoids, steroids, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. The phytoconstituents and related pharmacological activities of various parts of P. santalinus include antifungal, anticholinesterase, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and antiulcer. Literature survey highlights the dermatological applications of the phytoconstituents such as pterostilbene, savinin, and betulin as potential leads for anti-aging, ultraviolet rays (UV-B) protective, and wound healing effects. Undoubtedly, P. santalinus has wide therapeutic value. The dermatologically significant phytoconstituents, namely, pterostilbene, cedrol, savinin, lupeol, betulin, β-eudesmol, and α-bisabolol, if isolated and used in dermatological formulations, can show promising skin protective effect. The data were compiled using scientific databases, namely, Google Scholar and PubMed, the data made available specifically from 2010 to 2021.

Spina Gleditsiae is an important herb with various medicinal properties in traditional and folk medicinal systems of East Asian countries. In China through the centuries, it has been traditionally used as a source of drugs for anticancer, detoxication, detumescence, apocenosis, and antiparasites effects. Recently, an increasing number of studies have been reported regarding its chemical constituents and pharmacological activities. To further evidence the traditional use, phytochemicals, and pharmacological mechanisms of this herb, a systematic literature review was performed herein for Spina Gleditsiae. The review approach consisted of searching several web-based scientific databases including PubMed, Web of Science, and Elsevier using the keywords “Spina Gleditsiae”, “Zao Jiao Ci”, and “Gleditsia sinensis”. Based on the proposed criteria, 17 articles were evaluated in detail. According to the reviewed data, it is quite evident that Spina Gleditsiae contains a number of bioactive phytochemical components, which account for variety medicinal values including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antiatherogenic, antimicrobial, antiallergic, and antivirus activities. The phytochemical and pharmacological studies reviewed herein strongly underpin a fundamental understanding of herbal Spina Gleditsiae and support its ongoing clinical uses in China. The further phytochemical evaluation, safety verification, and clinical trials are expected to progress Spina Gleditsiae-based development to finally transform the traditional TCM herb Spina Gleditsiae to the valuable authorized drug.

AbstractFilifoliumsibiricum (L.)Kitam (F.sibiricum), a compositae plant, is especially used to inhibit drug-resistant bacteria in folk medicine. Modern pharmacological studies also confirmed a variety of pharmacological properties about sedative activities, antibacterial activity, anti-inflammatory activity, analgesic activities, antitussive and asthma relieving. In this paper, the research progress of F.sibiricum in botany, ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and toxicology was reviewed. Prospects for future investigation and application of this herb were also discussed. Information on F.sibiricum was gathered from various sources, including books on traditional Chinese herbal medicine and scientific databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Baidu Scholar, CNKI and other professional websites. The results indicate that ~ 66 chemical compounds were isolated and identified from F.sibiricum. Among them, flavonoids are generally considered to be the main bioactive and characteristic ingredients. F.sibiricum is a traditional Chinese medicine with pharmacological activities such as the immune system, nervous system, respiratory system and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems. Most importantly, we should concentrate on developing new drugs related to F.sibiricum, so as to exert greater potential for treatment.

In recent years, ethnobotanical and traditional application of natural compounds, principally of plant origin established much attention as they are well tested for their effectiveness and generally believed to be non-toxic for human use. Canna indica L. is a tropical herb belonging to the family Cannaceae. It has been extensively used in a traditional remedy for the treatment of many complaints. The phytochemical analysis of C. indica exhibited that it contained various phytochemicals including alkaloids, cardiac glycosides, anthocyanin pigments, flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids, tannins, phlobatannins, saponins, carbohydrates, proteins, oils, and many other chemical compounds. The pharmacological studies showed that this plant exerted anthelmintic, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiviral, antidiabetic, antidiarrheal, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, cytotoxic, hemostatic, hepatoprotective, molluscicidal, and other effects. This review attempts to illuminate the available literature on C. indica (L.) with respect to ethnobotany, chemical constituents, and summary of numerous pharmacological activities. Every part of C. indica has valuable properties that can serve humanity so the whole plant can be broadly studied for further research aspects.

The present highlight the comprehensive ethano-medicinal uses of B. maderaspatensis, to enlighten its phytochemical constituents and pharmacological uses which may useful in various types of diseases. Blepharis is a genus of plant in family Acanthaceae and it contains around 126 species found in seasonally dry to arid habitats. One of its plants, Blepharis maderaspatensis (L.) B. Heyne ex Roth has been recognized by the Utinjan, Otigan, Utagan, and Chatushpatri in Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, and Sanskrit respectively. Leaf extract of B. maderaspatensis rich in phytoconstituents like saponins, mucilage, flavonoids like caffeic acid, rutin, quercetin and ferulic acid. It is useful in various types of diseases as proved by pharmacological studies as an anti-hyperlipidaemic, anti-atherogenic activities, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive activity, anti-ulcer activity, wound healing activity and in diabetic wound. The review suggests the similar uses and nomenclature of B. maderaspatensis to Blepharis edulis as mentioned in Wealth of India. Blepharis maderaspatensis (L.) B. Heyne ex Roth has rich phytoconstituents and varied pharmacological activities. Further, it has similar uses as Blepharis edulis mentioned in Wealth of India. Blepharis maderaspatensis (L.) B. Heyne ex Roth is the species of original Utingan stated in Ayurveda. Likewise, it has similar properties and action to the Blepharis edulis (Forssk.) Pers. which could be useful for different types of diseases like inflammation, ulcer, wound, diabetic wound. Present review highlights the phytoconstituents and different ethanomedicinal claims and some proven pharmacological activities.

Background: The approximately 250 accepted species of the genus Zanthoxylum (Rutaceae) are distributed in the warm temperate and subtropical regions of the world. Different plant parts of Zanthoxylum species have been used traditionally as medicines for various diseases affecting both human and animals. Based on the traditional knowledge, several phytochemical and pharmacological studies have been conducted. Objective: This review aims to offer an update describing the secondary metabolites isolated and described from the genus Zanthoxylum, covering literature published from January 2012 to mid-2019. Methods: The ethnobotanical, phytochemical and pharmacological data about Zanthoxylum species were searched and obtained from scientific databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, SciFinder and Web of Science. Information about the accepted number of Zanthoxylum species was obtained from Global Biodiversity Information Facility. Results: The genus Zanthoxylum (Rutaceae) is a rich source of structurally diverse secondary metabolites with promising pharmacological activities. A total of 126 new secondary metabolites belonging to different classes of natural products, including alkaloids, amides, lignans and neolignans, coumarins, peptides, terpenoids and flavonoids reported from different Zanthoxylum species are described in the period covered by this rreview. It comprises data reported in more than 130 peer-reviewed articles and covers their source, isolation, structure elucidation and pharmacological activities (where available). Conclusion: A total of 126 new secondary metabolites isolated from the leaves, stems, stem barks, roots, root barks, fruits, and pericarps of Zanthoxylum species are reported. The findings show that plants of the genus Zanthoxylum show potential towards pharmacological activity, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, cytotoxic, larvicidal, antioxidant, anticancer/antipoliferative, and antimycobacterial.

Lepidium sativum Linn. (family Cruciferae) is an edible herb that is botanically related to watercress and mustard, having their peppery, tangy taste and odour. Traditionally L. sativum seeds are used to treat wounds, sprains, asthma, bronchitis, cough and is considered useful as abortifacient, aphrodisiac, antibacterial, diuretic, expectorant, gastrointestinal stimulant, gastroprotective, laxative and stomachic. Many of these traditional uses have been scientifically validated using different in vitro and in vivo studies and in this review are compiled in an inclusive manner. Seeds are reported to be rich in carbohydrates, vitamins, amino acids, proteins, triterpenoids, steroids and saponin glycosides possessing different pharmacological activities. Aim of the study: This study is an effort to collate complete scientific literature published till March 2021 in order to generate a succinct summation on the distribution, traditional beneficial potential, chemical constituents, phytochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology of this coveted species of genus Lepidium. Materials and Methods: Exploring assorted scientific databases. Results: The present methodically compiled review article accentuates medicinal and nutritional significance of this highly valued plant by focusing on various aspects of the plant such as the, physicochemical characterisation and pharmacological studies that validates folklore uses. Thus, this annotated script on L. sativum would be a handy tool to explore the future prospective of research on this traditional plant.

AbstractPiperazine, a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic has acquired an inimitable position in medicinal chemistry because of its versatile structure, which has fascinated researchers to design novel piperazine based molecules having various biological actions. The subsistence of various compounds possessing diverse pharmacological activities in the literature further confirms this fact. Currently available analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs are associated with side effects that limit their use. Moreover, the literature reveals the incredible anti-inflammatory and analgesic potential of piperazine derivatives along with their method of synthesis, therefore; the present review has been designed to collate the development made in this area that will surely be advantageous in designing novel piperazine based candidates with enhanced efficacy and less toxicity. An extensive literature survey was carried by scrutinizing peer reviewed articles from worldwide scientific databases available on GOOGLE, SCOPUS, PUBMED, and only relevant studies published in English were considered.

Momordica cochinchinensis (Lour.) Spreng (M. cochinchinensis) is a deciduous vine that grows in Southeast Asia. It is known as gac in Vietnam and as Red Melon in English. Gac is reputed to be extremely benificial for health and has been widely used as food and folk medicine in Southeast Asia. In China, the seed of M. cochinchinensis (Chinese name: Mu biezi) is used as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for the treatment of various diseases. More than 60 chemical constituents have been isolated from M. cochinchinensis. Modern pharmacological studies and clinical practice demonstrate that some chemical constituents of M. cochinchinensis possess wide pharmacological activities, such as anti-tumor, anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory, etc. This paper reviews the phytochemistry, pharmacological activities, toxicity, and clinical application of M. cochinchinensis, aiming to bring new insights into further research and application of this ancient herb.

Background: Enhydra fluctuans Lour, a tropical herb, commonly known as helencha or harkuch, belonging to family Asteraceae, and is an edible semi-aquatic herbaceous vegetable plant with serrate leaves, grows commonly in different parts of the world. Enhydra fluctuans possesses potential pharmacological role against inflammation, cancer, diarrhea, microbial infection, diabetes, and so on. Aim of the review: This review aims to provide the most current information on the botanical characterization, distribution, traditional uses, chemical constituents, as well as the pharmacological activities of Enhydra fluctuans Lour. Materials and methods: The recently updated information on Enhydra fluctuans was gathered from scientific journals, books, and worldwide accepted scientific databases via a library and electronic search (PubMed, Elsevier, Google Scholar, Springer, Scopus, Web of Science, Wiley online library. All of the full-text articles and abstracts related to Enhydra were screened. The most important and relevant articles were carefully chosen for study in this review. Results: Crude extracts and isolated compounds of Enhydra fluctuans Lour has been reported pharmacologically active against cytoprotective, analgesic and anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-diarrhoeal, antihelmintic, CNS depressant, hepatoprotective, thrombolytic, antidiabetic, anti-oxidant, phagocytic and cytotoxic, and neuroprotective potential activities. Discussion: Phytochemical analysis from different studies has reported Germacranolide, Sesquiterpene lactone, Flavonoid, Essential oil, Steroid, Diterpenoid, Melampolide, Sesquiterpene lactone, Isoflavone glycoside as major compounds of Enhydra fluctuans Lour. Conclusions: However, more research is important to explore the mode of action of bioactive components of the plant and its therapeutic capabilities.

Patrinia scabiosaefolia Fisch. Trev. and Patrinia villosa (Thunb.) Juss, are two species of Patrinia recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia with the same Chinese name “Baijiangcao” and similar therapeutic effect in traditional Chinese medicine. The present article is the first comprehensive review on the chemical composition and pharmacological activities of these herbs. In this review, data on chemical constituents and pharmacological profile of the two herbs are provided. This review discusses all the classes of the 223 compounds (phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, terpenes, saponins and volatile components, etc.) detected in the two herbs providing information on the current state of knowledge of the phytochemicals present in them. In the past three years, our research group has isolated and identified about more than 100 ingredients from the two herbs. Therefore, we published a systematic review of our research papers and studies on the two herbs were carried out using resources such as classic books about Chinese herbal medicine and scientific databases including Pubmed, Web of Science, SciFinder, CNKI. etc. The present review discusses the most thoroughly studied pharmacological activities (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antimicrobial, antitumor and antiviral activities) of the two herbs. This comprehensive review will be informative for scientists searching for new properties of these herbs and will be important and significant for the discovery of bioactive compounds from the two herbs and in complete utilization of Patrinia scabiosaefolia Fisch. ex Trev. and Patrinia villosa (Thunb.) Juss.
