Objective: This study evaluates the registration status and the quality of nine brands of Vitamin C sold in Freetown, Sierra Leone, using official and non-official methods of analysis. Methods: The parameters taken into consideration during the study include non-official methods (friability and disintegration) and the official methods (identification test, uniformity of dosage unit, and assay by titrimetric and colorimetric tests). The different brands of vitamin C were selected and classified as registered and unregistered based on the data derived from the National Medicines Regulatory Authority. Results: One vitamin C product collected was unregistered at the National medicines regulatory authority (Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone). All nine vitamin C products met the requirements for uniformity of dosage unit. The vitamin C products also conformed to the BP specification for friability and identification test (retention factor). The identification test showed that each brand contained vitamin C (ascorbic acid). The disintegration test was not applicable for chewable tablets. Three of the four non-chewable vitamin C products complied with the BP specification for disintegration, while one failed and did not meet the requirement. The assay results for ascorbic acid using titration and colourimetric method were comparable and appropriate for determining vitamin C. Out of a total of nine samples; seven met the requirement for BP specification (Passed) for assay. In contrast, one product did not meet the BP requirement (failed), and one sample had more vitamin C than the Pharmacopoeia limit. Conclusion: Periodic quality evaluation and routine checks for pharmaceutical products can ascertain the quality of products, their storage conditions and identify potential counterfeit medications.

The article presents data on the study of the effect of foliar water-soluble mineral fertilizer NOVATEK Solub K-Max 10-5-30 on the biochemical composition and commercial quality of apple fruits. A rise in vitamin C from the introduction of NOVATEK at a rate of 2.5 kg/ha indicates the effectiveness of this drug for optimizing the content of ascorbic acid in fruits. An increase in the content of monosaccharides and a decrease in disaccharides were found for all the studied rates of consumption of agrochemicals. The use of mineral fertilizer “Novatek Solub K-Max” contributed to increase the dry weight of fruits. The application of this mineral fertilizer is recommended for inclusion in the industry regulations for Apple cultivation as one of the elements of the technology.

The application of vermicompost may improve the quality of potato. The present study revealed that vermicompost had a significant effect on most of the quality contributing parameters studied under the experiment. Results demonstrated that quality parameters increased with increasing vermicompost level. Among the sixteen treatments combination, BARI Alu-25 (Asterix) with vermicompost at the rate of 6 t/ha showed the highest ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), antioxidant and polyphenol content. In the case of ambient storage condition; ascorbic acid and polyphenol decreased with an increasing storing period while antioxidant content increased with the increasing storing period up to 60 days after storage (DAS). BARI Alu-25 (Asterix) and BARI Alu-29 (Courage) may store under ambient storage condition up to 60 DAS without imparting any significant quality losses just prior to the sprouting of the tuber. It may be concluded that the potato growers of Bangladesh may apply vermicompost on their field at the rate of 6 t/ha for maintaining the good quality of potato.

The consumer acceptability of the fruit is very important aspect of distribution. Consumers expect high-quality fruit with high pro-health values. The intention of the research was to assess the quality of hardy kiwi fruit changes during storage in order to provide consumers with high-quality fruit and nutraceutical content. A particular challenge was to assess the storage capacity of the new Polish variety ‘Bingo’PBR. This is a protected Plant Breeder’s Right (PBR) cultivar in accordance with the Union Internationale pour la Protection des Obtentions Vegetates (UPOV). The storage quality of the fruit of the ‘Bingo’ cultivar was assessed in contrast to the fruit of the ‘Ananasnaya’ cultivar, the basic minikiwi cultivar. The experiment assessed the effect of the fruit ripeness phase during harvest (°Brix −7.7 and 9.0) and the effect of the storage conditions, i.e., normal atmosphere cold store (0.1% CO2: 21% O2) versus controlled atmosphere (1.5% CO2: 1.5% O2). In the fruit evaluation, the focus was concentrated on changes in the basic color of the peel, firmness, soluble solids content, acidity, as well as the main health-promoting attributes, i.e., antioxidant activity, vitamin C content and total polyphenols. In the experiment, it was found the fruits of ‘Ananasnaya’ variety were almost 40% harder than the fruits of ‘Bingo’PBR variety. The CA technology (1.5% CO2: 1.5% O2) allows for the acceptable firmness of the fruit for up to 56 days of storage. The earlier harvest with an extract content of 7.0–7.5°Brix also promotes higher fruit firmness. Fruits stored in a normal atmosphere cold store ripen faster and are fully ripe after 28 days. ‘Bingo’PBR variety is characterized by fruits with a higher ascorbic acid content than the fruits of ‘Ananasnaya’ variety. The vitamin C content in fruits increases up to 28 days, regardless of the conditions in which they are stored. The content of polyphenols does not change significantly during storage, which reflects the higher stability of these compounds in fruits.

Pineapple is one of the most economically important fruit crops of Mauritius and is often sold after being minimally processed (MP). Unfortunately, minimally processed whole (MPW) and fresh-cut (MPC) pineapples are susceptible to microbial contamination that can compromise the quality of the products. It is therefore important that MP pineapples have optimal freshness, nutritional quality, and are free from microbial contamination which would otherwise constitute a public health hazard to the consumers.The main aim of this study was to assess the microbiological, nutritional, and physicochemical quality of MP pineapples sourced from wet markets and supermarkets. Samples of MPW and MPC pineapples collected from open markets and supermarkets were subjected to microbiological, pH, and vitamin C analyses. The MP pineapples were also challenged using the specific spoilage organism (SSO), Pseudomonas fluorescens and subsequently stored at either ambient or refrigeration temperature to simulate storage conditions of wet markets and supermarkets, respectively. Laboratory analyses revealed that the Total Viable Counts (TVC), pH, and vitamin C content for MPW and MPC pineapples sampled ranged from 4.8 – 5.5 Log CFU/g, 4.16 – 4.96, and 21.60 – 28.90 mg/100 g, respectively. Since the population density of TVC was less than 7 Log CFU/g, which usually marks the onset of microbiological spoilage, the products were considered to be of a satisfactory microbiological quality. Moreover, there was no statistically significant difference in the microbiological load, pH, and vitamin C content for pineapples sourced from markets and supermarkets. Taken together, this study reveals that MP pineapples sold in wet markets and supermarkets have a satisfactory microbiological, nutritional, and sensorial quality with a shelf-life of >7 hours and >5 days when stored at room (29°C) and refrigeration (4°C) temperatures, respectively.

Cherry is the most common pit crop in our country. It is zoned in all soil-climatic zones of Ukraine and is a valuable fast-growing fruit breed that gives the fruit essential for human nutrition. It has high flavor qualities, contains 0.70–3.00 % valuable organic acids, 6.5–21.5 % sugar, vitamins, including 13-19 mg/100 g. of vitamin C. The latter plays an important role in human nutrition, since it is essential for normal metabolism. Human body provision with vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is of special concern as 50–80 % of the population manifests its lack, which has a negative effect on human health. Ascorbic acid content in fruit depends on the variety, ripeness degree, soil and climatic conditions of cultivation, harvesting time as well as transportation and storage conditions. Cherry fruit contain within 10−50 mg/100 g of vitamin C. However, the shelf life of cherries is only a few days. Therefore, the annual provision of the population with these fruits is only possible under organization of fresh long-term and canned storage. Freezing is one of the most advanced methods of preservation as it promotes better preservation in the fruit nutritional value, including labile vitamin C, than any other method of processing. Studies have found out that the cherriy fruit lose a significant amount of ascorbic acid during the freezing and in the storage period. The aim of the research was to study the dependence of the characteristics variety and the method of freezing cherry fruit on the change of ascorbic acid content. The fruit of the following cherry varieties were selected for the research in 2016−2018: Zhadana, Chance, Elegant, Optimist, Podbielska, Alpha, Memory of Artemenko grown at the pomology experimental station named after L.P. Symiyenko of IH NAAS. Cherry fruits harvested in the consumer stage of ripeness were sorted, examined, washed, frozen in pre-prepared sugar syrups in plastic cups at a temperature of −22–24 °C, kept at a temperature of −18 °C for up to 6 months. The following variants of fruit freezing were studied: in bulk (control), in 25 % sugar syrup, in 20 % sugar syrup with 4 % ascorutin, in 45 % sugar syrup. Before and after freezing, ascorbic acid content was determined in the fruit for three to six months. Studies on the freezing of cherry fruit were conducted in accordance with the guidelines for conducting research on frozen fruits, berries and vegetables. The chemical composition of the frozen fruit was investigated taking into account the mass losses. According to the research results, the content of ascorbic acid in fresh cherry fruits ranged from 16.25 to 19.15 mg/100 g. The highest content was noted in the cherry varieties of Memory of Artemenko (19.15 mg/100 g), and the lowest – in Optimist (16.25 mg/100 g). In six months following the freezing, compared with fresh fruits, there was a decrease in ascorbic acid by 7–8.85 mg/100 g which made 38.2–51.4 % compared to the fresh fruit. The smallest losses were in the fruits, frozen in 45 % of sugar syrup (35.5–43.2 %) and in 20 % of sugar syrup with 4 % of ascorutin (36.08–44.3 %). Aascorbic acid content at the end of storage was 48.6–553 % in the control and for fruit cherries, frozen in sugar syrups, it was higher and made 53.2–64.5 %. The highest content of ascorbic acid was retained in cherries frozen in 45 % sugar syrup – 56.9–64.5 % and in cherry fruit frozen in 20 % sugar syrup with 4 % ascorutin added – 55.42–63 %. Consequently, there was a decrease in ascorbic acid content by 38.2–51.4 % in the fruits of cherry during the freezing. Somewhat lower was the loss of its content in fruit frozen in sugar syrups, in particular in 45 % of sugar syrup – 35.5–43.2 % and in 20 % of sugar syrup with 4 % of ascorutin – 36.8–44.3 %. In general, the content of ascorbic acid for fruit cherries, frozen in sugar syrups, remained at 53.2–64.5 %. The best preservation of its content in frozen cherry fruits was found in 45 % sugar syrup and 20 % sugar syrup with addition of 4 % ascorutin. Quality of minimally processed jackfruit bulb was evaluated during storage at different storage times, temperatures, and types of packaging. The jackfruit pulps were first dried at 45 °C, stored in polypropylene plastics, zipper bags and plastic boxes. Quality parameters were evaluated every 5 days and based on phytochemical changes such as vitamin C, polyphenol, and antioxidant activity. Results revealed that polypropylene plastics were the best packaging product for retention of vitamin C content (5.837 mg/100g) antioxidant activity (7.458%) and phenolic compounds (2526.603mg/100g) after 30 days of storage. Figures for plastic boxes were 5.641 mg/100g, 5.249% and 2361.657 mg/100g, respectively. Similarly, zipper bags were 5.32 mg/100g, 5.895 % and 2173.867 mg/100g respectively. Sensory evaluation in terms of taste, color, texture, and overall acceptability showed that polypropylene packaging gave favorable scores and the products were highly accepted by trained evaluators.

Lemon cordial was prepared and its storage conditions were studied. The prepared cordial was kept in 250 ml sterilized glass bottles, sealed and stored at ambient temperature (22°- 37°C) for 360 days. The chemical composition, keeping quality and consumers acceptability of the product was analyzed at an interval of 15 days up to 120 days and then at an interval of 30 days upto360 days. Except vitamin C content, no noticeable change was observed during the storage. The aim of this work was to study the short and long term influences of ascorbic acid on Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, if supplemented in their food. No differences regarding food intake were observed in the absence of vitamin C. On a daily basis, animals accustomed to food containing ascorbic acid prefered to continue eating the same food. Food preference in capybaras did not seem to depend on ascorbic acid availability; however, when accustomed to vitamin C, capybaras might recognize and select ascorbic acid in subsequent food. Mechanisms allowing capybaras to "evaluate" the nutritional quality of their food are discussed, as well as the adaptive value of this behavior in free ranging populations.

Siger rice is an analog rice made from agricultural materials containing carbohydrates such as cassava. The purpose of this research was to know the effect of addition of ascorbic acid and steam duration to the quality of siger rice from cassava. The factorial experiment arranged in a Complete Randomized Block Design (CBRD) with two factors and three replications.. The first factor was the addition of ascorbic acid is 0% (A1), 0.1% (A2), 0.15% (A3), 0.2% (A4), 0.25% (A5), and 0.3% A6). The second factor was steam duration of 25 minutes (L1), 30 minutes (L2), and 35 minutes (L3). The data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANNOVA) and continued with Least Significance Different (LSD) test. The results showed that the addition of ascorbic acid 0.2% with steaming for 35 minutes resulted in the best quality of siger rice with white color tending, somewhat similar to rice, rather soft, water content of 10.62%, 0.88% ash, protein 3,82%, fat 2.42%, crude fiber 1.13%, carbohydrates 81.12%, and vitamin C 0.61 mg/g.

<p>The common guava is a small tree from Myrtacaeae family which is cultivated for its fruits. Researches have explored new methods to promote fruit yields and quality of crops. Application of Forchlorofenuron or CPPU (with Molecular Formula: C12H10CIN3O) improves the fruit size as well as its quality, but there has not been an investigation evaluating its effects on common guava fruit under field conditions. This research was performed to study the effects of different doses of CPPU (0, 10, 20 and 40 mg L-1) on common guava fruit size and quality characteristics under field conditions. Analysis of variance and LSD (least significant differences) mean compression indicated that total soluble solids, total acidity, ascorbic acid or vitamin C, fruit firmness, phenolics, 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), polygalacturonase, pectin methyl esterase and ethylene were significantly different in most traits and CPPU-40 produced high means. The principal components (PC) analysis explained 95% of the total variation and the first two principal components (PC1 and PC2) explained 78% and 17% of the total variation, respectively. According to biplot, CPPU-40 had the highest values for all of the measured traits except DPPH, ethylene and polygalacturonase. The most prominent relations by biplot were a strong positive correlation among phenolics, fruit firmness, total acidity, total soluble solids and ascorbic acid as indicated by the small obtuse angles between their vectors. The measured traits were grouped into two clusters and cutoff point verified via Wilks’ lambda statistics. Cluster I consisted of three traits (ascorbic acid or vitamin C, fruit firmness and ethylene) while cluster II included total soluble solids. Findings of this study suggest that CPPU can be used as an effective growth regulator to improve the size and quality of common guava fruit.</p>
