Objective: To study the impact of intervention on the reduction of white blood cells (WBC) in the management of infection in patients with pneumonia in Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) hospital period July through September 2019. Method: This three-month analytical prospective cohort study analyzed the reduction of WBC in the management of infection in pneumonia patients (n=42) before and after intervention in USU hospital. A self-designed questionair was used to assess the patients characterics, the required laboratory data including WBC, and length of stay (LOS). The base-line data were assessed after three days of treatment. The data with  intervetion were assessed between July - September 2019. The Patients characteristics and drug utilization were analyzed descriptively. The levels of WBC before and after interventions were compared using paired samples t test (p < 0.05) was considered significant. Results: Characteristics of the pneumonia patients: male, 61.9%; female, 38.1%. The mean age of patients with pneumonia was 60.48 ± 14.76 years. The most widely used antibiotic was ceftriaxone as much as 48%. There was a significant difference in reduction of WBC between patients with pneumonia before and after intervention, p= 0.002. Conclusions: Intervention can significantly increase the treatment of infection in patients with pneumonia.

Nephrolithiasis in the communities of Northeast Thailand frequently presents with multiple chronic health complaints, i.e. myofascial pain, back pain, dyspepsia, arthralgia, headache, fatigue, frank paresthesia, dysuria and any of these aggravated by purine-rich food (PRF). We assessed the efficacy of Orthosiphon in treating subjects with at least two active symptoms and negative for urine white blood cells. Subjects were randomly allocated to two groups. Crude extract of Orthosiphon given in a capsule (equivalent to 1.6–1.8 g of dried leaves of Orthosiphon) two times a day to Group 1 (n= 36) and a placebo to Group 2 (n= 40) for 14 days. The medication for each subject was packed and its code kept secret until the data analysis. Both groups were asked not to consume any of 25 purine-rich foods (PRFs) during treatment. The primary measure was the reduced sum of active severity symptoms as recorded using the visual analog scale before and after therapy (i.e. on day 7 and 14). The data on 76 subjects were processed. The mean of the total scores (95% CI) of the symptoms in each group were decreased significantly (P< 0.001); 185.6 (153.3, 218.0) to 94.7 (58.2, 131.2) in the Orthosiphon group and 196.1 (164.4, 227.8) to 89.6 (62.8, 116.5) in the placebo group. When comparing between groups, no statistically significant difference was found. The mean consumption in PRFs was significantly decreased (P< 0.001) in both groups; however, Orthosiphon did not have additional benefit over placebo at 7 and 14 days of treatment during which they reduced these foods.

Abstract Dam construction is one of the most popular solutions for managing water resources. In recent years, changes in patterns of regional seismicity associated with large impoundment dams have raised concerns among environmentalists. In this study, five large dams located in Iran were studied from this perspective. The Gutenberg-Richter, linear regression and T-test were used to examine the seismic changes in the radius of 100 km of each of the dams during a twenty-five-year period before and after the construction of the dams. The results revealed that the seismicity level and relative density of large and small earthquakes in three of these dams have increased after dam construction. A significant difference between the magnitude of earthquakes, as well as the number of earthquakes before and after the construction of dams in the region, was recognized. However, the results of the T-test statistical analysis indicated that the mean depth of the earthquakes and their distance from the dams before and after construction have not changed significantly. Overall, these results indicated that the construction of large impoundment dams has been associated with some changes in patterns of regional seismicity. The findings would guide researchers to further investigate the type of impacts that dam construction may have on seismicity patterns.

 Introduction: The problems in hypertension will cause emotional or mental disorders, one of which is anxiety. Feelings arise due to the fear and ignorance of an individual about hypertension experienced and the impact that will occur in the future. Psychoeducation is the provision of information about disease management and individual psychological aspects. This study aims to determine the effect of psychoeducation on the anxiety level of elderly patients with hypertension in Nambakor Village, Saronggi District.Methods: This research method is pre-experimental with the research design is one group pre test post test. The sampling technique used is Random Sampling and the number of samples is 30 respondents. Data collection using a questionnaire on the level of anxiety Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale.Result: The results showed that the mean of the anxiety score before the psychoeducation intervention was 24,43±7,60 and the mean of the anxiety score after the psychoeducation intervention was was 23,23 ± 7,83. The results of the paired t test of anxiety score was p = 0.002, means that there is significant difference in anxiety scores before and after psychoeducation.Conclusion: There is an influence of psychoeducation on the level of anxiety in the elderly with hypertension. The conclusion obtained is that psychoeducation can increase knowledge in patients with hypertension so that it is expected to be one form of intervention that can be applied.

The aim of this work was to determine the impact of etomidate (Propiscin) dose (1 and 2 ml l−1) and exposure time (2 and 10 min) on the biochemical and haematological parameters of juvenile pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) [mean body length (Lc) 25.9 cm; body weight (W) 189.9 g] that were reared in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). Significant changes in the mean values of total protein, globulin, calcium, magnesium, and ammonia were noted in all groups immediately following exposure. The greatest changes in the haematological indicators were observed in groups subjected to 10-min exposure at both doses of the anaesthetic. The specimens from these groups had higher values for white blood cells (WBC), red blood cells (RBC), haemoglobin (HGB), haematocrit (HCT), and mean corpuscular volume (MCV). Statistically significant differences in these same parameters were also noted in the groups of fish exposed to the anaesthetic for 2 min at a dose of 2 ml l−1, but they were not as pronounced. Twenty-four h following exposure to etomidate, all blood parameters in the experimental groups were comparable to those of the control group. Etomidate can be recommended as a safe, effective anaesthetic for pikeperch.

The objective of this study was to obtain insight into the effect of frying instructions on food handlers' control decisions in restaurants and to investigate the impact of control decisions on the variation and concentration of acrylamide in French fries. The concentrations of acrylamide and reducing sugars were analyzed, the frying temperature and time were measured, and thawing practices were observed. The results obtained before and after instructions were provided to the food handlers were compared for restaurants as a group and for each restaurant. Frying instructions supported food handlers' decisions to start frying when the oil temperature reached 175°C; all handlers started frying at the correct temperature. However, the effect of the instructions on the food handlers' decisions for frying time differed; most handlers increased the frying time beyond 240 s to achieve crispier French fries with a final color dictated by their preference. Providing instructions did not result in a significant difference in the mean concentration of acrylamide in French fries for the restaurants as a group. However, data analyzed for each restaurant revealed that when food handlers properly followed the instructions, the mean concentration of acrylamide was significantly lower (169 μg/kg) than that before instructions were provided (1,517 μg/kg). When food handlers did not complying with the frying instructions, mean acrylamide concentrations were even higher than those before instructions were provided. Two different strategies were developed to overcome the noncompliant behavior of food handlers: establishing requirements for the features of commercial fryers and strict monitoring of compliance with instructions.

Background: To evaluate the complete blood count of Laotian students in Hue city. Materials and method: A cross-sectional study on 400 Lao students who were examinated the complete blood count at Department of Hematology, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy from September 2019 to May 2020. Results: 400 Lao students (male/female = 1/1.2), the students who came from Salavan province accounted for the highest percentage (22.25%). The mean of age was 24.78 ± 6.44 (17 - 44). The mean of red blood cells (RBC) was 5.13 ± 0.73 T/L and of hemoglobin in the study group was 129.27 ± 18.58 g/L. The percentage of students with anemia was 13.5% and there were 3 students with severe anemia. The mean of mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) were respectively 81.27 ± 9.32 fL (49.2 - 103.9) and 25.50 ± 3.56 pg (11.8 - 33.2). The mean of white blood cells (WBC) and platelets (PLT) were respectively 7.42 ± 2.29 G/L and 272.33 ± 83.62 G/L. There was a correlation between anemia and age (p < 0.05), mainly in 26 - 40. There was significant difference about RBC and Hb between anemic group and non-anemic group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: It is essential to check the complete blood count of Laotian students to evaluate anemia and screen hemoglobinopathies. This study focused on the impact of local Arabica coffee on the level of attention of individual brain waves, and how coffee affects Human EEG Frequency. Local Arabica coffee is adopted in this study as a medium to wake up the Beta wave. The Personal brainwave data is then recorded through EEG equipment and classified. The result showed that local coffee is helping to improve people's attention level — the study conducted on fifty participants: twenty-five males and twenty-five females aged between twenty to thirty years old. Brainwaves or Electroencephalography are collected twice before and after drinking coffee to compare the effects of Arabica on human brain waves by using NeuroSky mindwave mobile. The paired sample t-test test was employed for comparing two groups of Beta brainwaves experiment. Besides, the k-means algorithm is used to perform data mining on brain waves, and the differential brain wave signal data is clustered and divided into three levels. The experimental results showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the two paired samples. Therefore, the results confirmed that local Arabica coffee has a direct impact on personal attention.

Pangandaran is a popular tourism destination in West Java, which is annually visited by a high number of foreign and domestic tourists. It has set itself the vision of gaining the title ‘Healthy Village’. However, Pangandaran beach is still fighting the problem of waste, which is easily found along the coast. Thus, disease is mushrooming due to the lack of a Clean Lifestyle (Perilaku Hidup Bersih Sehat/PHBS) and the low awareness of PHBS in the Pangandaran local community. The efforts undertaken to overcome the problem of infectious disease due to the lack of PHBS require great support from various parties such as health service centres and via community participation and the role of cadres, who also manage the Community Health Centres (Pos Pelayanan Terpadu/Posyandu). The study aims to determine the effect of the health promotion of PHBS on the attitude, motivation, and behaviour of the health cadres. The study was quasi-experimental, involving a pre-test and post-test design. The study was conducted in Pangandaran Village, Pangandaran Regency. This research involved the health cadres because they are the closest person to the community and they also run a health program. In addition, they are reliable people when it comes to overcoming health problems in the community. The total population of health cadres in Pangandaran Village amounted to 28 people, via total sampling. The instruments used in this study included a questionnaire, observation sheet, and a checklist. The data analysis used univariate and bivariate analysis. The result showed that the mean score of attitude ranged from 65.11 to 74.71 (p = 0,000), the mean score of motivation was 37.39 to 40.71 (p = 0,000), the mean score of genital hygiene behaviour was 67.96 to 80.61 (p = 0,000) and the mean score of the behaviour of CTPS was significant at 32.25 to 35.71 (p = 0,000). This study found there to be significant difference in the mean attitude, motivation and behaviour of the health cadres before and after the intervention period.

AbstractThe present study was aimed to evaluate hematological and oxidative stress parameters in domestic dogs infested naturally (n=10) by Rhipicephalus sp. to compare with non-infested dogs (n=10). All blood samples were collected from brachial vein into tubes EDTA for the hematological analysis such as red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), hemoglobin (HGB) and platelets (PLT). Serum was rapidly separated after centrifugation and stored at -20 °C until it was used for malondialdehyde (MDA) and 2,2’-Azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline)-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) inhibition measurements. HGB in non-infested dogs was significantly higher than in infested dogs (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in RBCs, WBCs and PLT between both groups (P>0.05). The mean of MDA concentration was high in infested dogs (0.92±0.62 nmol/ml) compared to non-infested dogs (0.75±0.25 nmol/ml). On the other hand, the percentage of ABTS inhibition was similar in both groups (P=0.71). High tick number seems significantly affected WBCs (P<0.0001) and HGB (P<0.001) in infested dogs. Concerning oxidative status, there was no significant differences (P>0.05) between low and high infested dogs, neither in the amount of MDA nor in the ABTS inhibition. In conclusion, infested dogs induced RBCs alterations, which coincided with the oxidative damage, as evidenced by MDA serum levels. Also, there was a relationship between the tick number in infested dogs and the hematological parameters.

Abstract Background and Aims SARS-CoV-2 represents a challenge for hemodialysis (HD) patients due to their multiple comorbidities, disturbed immune defenses in the setting of kidney disease and increased age. Furthermore, sharing collective spaces during HD sessions increases the risk of contamination. In March 2020, the first COVID-19 cases in Portugal occurred in Felgueiras, a municipality belonging to the district of Porto. The HD unit that serves this population has 69 in-center patients and, from March 2020 until January 2021, has had 14 COVID-19 cases. We describe our experience concerning patient management and their clinical characteristics. Method Clinical and laboratory data were collected. We aimed at assessing the impact of the infection in hemoglobin, alanine transaminase, several electrolytes - potassium, phosphorus, sodium and calcium - as well as the normalized protein catabolic rate (nPCR) comparing results from the month before infection with those of the month after cure. Statistical analysis used SPSS® and variables were compared using paired-samples t-test. Results We used a dedicated room and staff for COVID-19 patients, disinfection protocols and specific routes. Transportation was done with a maximum of 3 patients in a 9-seater vehicle, all patients used masks, practiced social distancing, were asked for symptoms and had their temperature measured on each HD session. SARS-CoV-2 infection was established by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction on nasal and oropharyngeal swabs. Of the 14 cases, 3 occurred in March, 5 from October until Christmas and 6 from then onwards, accounting for approximately 20% of the unit’s patients. Of these, 2 were asymptomatic, 6 had predominantly respiratory symptoms, 1 had fever and 1 had gastrointestinal symptoms. Three were hospitalized, 2 died due to COVID-19 and 1 died 1 month after cure due to advanced cancer. Mean age of these patients was 70±13.2; 5 were females and 6 had diabetic nephropathy. Only 7 patients had post-COVID-19 results for comparison. The mean hemoglobin value before COVID-19 was 10.5±1.7g/dL and did not change significantly after COVID-19. Although phosphorous dropped from a mean 3.8±0.9mg/dL to 3.2±1.3mg/dL, this difference did not reach significance (p=0.43). All other electrolytes remained stable. nPCR dropped from 1.23±0.47 to 0.95±0.37 although not a significant difference (p=0.24). Five patients were tested for IgG/IgM antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 one month after cure using Elecsys® qualitative immunoassay and 4 tested positive. Conclusion COVID-19 is a problem for HD patients where the percent of cases is larger than in the general population. Our 3 first cases and the 4 last cases shared the same HD shift and occurred in the same period confirming that, despite all protective measures, sharing the facilities in close proximity is a risk factor. Respiratory symptoms predominated but were only severe requiring hospital admission in 3 patients. Mortality represented 14% and the 2 patients whose death was attributable to COVID-19 had an increased burden of comorbidities and were old. Seroconversion was high 1 month after the disease. The only patient who tested negative for antibodies had been asymptomatic raising doubts about whether there could have been false test results or an undetectable immune response.
