Heart rate variability in persons of Tajik nationality during adaptation

Relevance . Maintaining the health of migrants while adapting to the new climatic and geographical conditions of residence is an urgent task. The impact of non-specific factors on the body of migrants in new climatogeographic conditions leads to the strain of regulatory and adaptive mechanisms, and in extreme cases to their failure. Objective - to determine the features of heart rate variability in young Tajiks, depending on the type of temperament living in Krasnoyarsk for more than a year. Materials and Methods: A study of heart rate variability in 63 Tajiks aged 18-40 years with different types of temperament, living in Krasnoyarsk for more than a year, was conducted. The types of temperament were determined by indices in accordance with the method of identifying VP-types of temperament according to E.Yu. Petrosyan, Yu. I. Savchenkov. The following indicators of heart rate variability (HRV) were evaluated: heart rate, the power of the high-frequency, low-frequency and very low-frequency spectrum (BV, MV-2, MV-1) of the HRV component, the voltage index of regulatory systems (IN), the centralization index (CI) and the activity index of regulatory systems. To assess the statistical significance of the differences between the samples, the Students criteria were used. Results and Discussion. It was revealed that migrants with an intense type of temperament after moving to a new place of residence increased the indicators of heart rate, BV and IN. At the same time, in the studied groups with a calm and adequate type of temperament, the power of BV was significantly reduced, with an increase in heart rate and CI. The conclusion is made about the influence of typological features of temperament on HRV indicators, when adapting to new climatogeographic living conditions. Individuals with an adequate type of temperament demonstrate the normal functioning of the adaptive capabilities of the body. In individuals with the calm type, an increase in the tension of the regulatory mechanisms was revealed. Conclusion . Significant changes in HRV are demonstrated by migrants with an intense type of temperament, in particular, they are characterized by a high voltage of regulatory mechanisms.

Introduction. The paper discusses the significance of the current balance of the activity of the autonomic nervous system and a group of factors that affect it. The conditions that cause the need to promptly correct the functional status of the organism to relieve excessive tension of regulatory mechanisms are noted. Analysis of literature indicates that there are conflicting data on the benefits of breathing exercises as health remedies. Materials and methods. According to the study of the specific features of response of the autonomic nervous system, including heart rate variability, and changes in the functional status index, there is a positive effect of respiratory gymnastics by A. N. Strelnikova on the health. Research results. The data on specific features of the individual reactions of the autonomic nervous system to a set of breathing exercises by A. N. Strelnikova are presented. The positive influence of respiratory gymnastics on the indices of the regulatory mechanisms in terms of heart rate variability is noted. Conclusion. A. N. Strelnikova’s respiratory gymnastics can act as a corrector of the functional status of the body and its adaptive capabilities and as a health promotion solution by reducing the tension of the autonomic nervous system activity.

Determining the maladaptation and adaptive capabilities of the body, in particular the cardiovascular system of volleyball player is currently advanced in sports medicine. The aim of the work is to establish correlations between cardiointervalographic indicators and parameters of external body structure in volleyball players of mesomorphic somatotype of juvenile age. The study involved 24 volleyball players aged 17 to 21 with a high level of sportsmanship and more than 3 years of experience. We conducted a study of heart rate variability on the cardiac computer diagnostic complex "OPTW" according to the recommendations of the European and North American Cardiac Association (1996). Indicators of autonomic homeostasis according to Baevsky, variation pulsometry, statistical and spectral cardiointervalographic parameters were determined. Anthropometry was performed by the method of Bunak (1941), somatotypological study – by the calculated modification of the method of Heath-Carter (1990), determination of the component composition of body weight by the method of Matejko (1992), correlation analysis by the method of Spearman was performed in the package "STATISTICA 5.5". Mesomorphic volleyball players were found to have the highest number and strength of reliable correlations with anthropo-somatotypological parameters, most of which were inverse and medium strength. Statistical, spectral parameters of heart rate variability and indicators of autonomic homeostasis with indicators of external body structure had few significant correlations. The girth of the hand in mesomorphic constitution volleyball players was statistically significantly related to the value of all statistical parameters and indicators of autonomic homeostasis by the method of Baevsky. According to the results of correlation analysis, we can assume that in volleyball players of mesomorphic somatotype with increasing the size of the mesomorphic component of somatotype, longitudinal, circumferential sizes and diameters of chest, arm, leg, neck will increase the impact on heart rate variability of the parasympathetic autonomic system.

Background: Stress is one of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and decreased heart rate variability is associated to increased mortality in some cardiac diseases. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of perceived stress on cardiac autonomic regulation in young healthy volunteers. Methods: 35 young healthy volunteers (19 to 29 years old, 6 men) from a Brazilian population were assessed for perceived stress by the translated and validated Perceived Stress Scale (PSS, 14 questions) and had the R-R intervals recorded at rest on supine position (POLAR RS800CX) and analyzed (5 minutes, Kubius HRV software) by Fast-Fourier Transform for quantification of Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Results: Average data (±SD) for age, heart rate, BMI, waist circumference and percentage of body fat (%BF) were: 21.3±2.7 years; 65.5±7.9 bpm; 22.3±1.9 Kg/m 2 ; 76.0±6.1 cm and 32.1±6.6%; respectively. The mean score for the PSS-14 was 23.5±7.2 and for the HRV parameter as follow: SSDN=54.8±21.2ms; rMSSD=55.9±32.2ms; low-frequency (LF)= 794.8±579.7ms 2 ; High-frequency (HF)= 1508.0±1783.0 ms 2 ; LF(n.u.)= 41.1±16.2; HF(n.u.)= 58.9±16.2; LF/HF=0.89±0.80 and Total power (TP)= 3151±2570ms 2 . Spearman nonparametric correlation was calculated and there was a significant correlation of PSS-14 scores and LF (ms 2 ) (r=−0.343; p= 0.044). Other HRV variables did not shown significant correlation but also had negative values for Spearman r (TP r=−0.265, p=0.124; HF r=−0.158; SSDN r=−0.207; rMSSD r=−0.243, p=0.160). LF/HF and LF(n.u.) did not correlate to PSS-14 having Spearman r very close to zero (LF/HF r=−0.007, p=0.969; LF(n.u.) r=−0.005, p=0.976). No correlation was found for HRV parameters and BMI and there was a trend for statistical correlation of %BF and LF (ms 2 ) (r=−0.309, p=0.071). Conclusions: These data demonstrate a possible association of perceived stress level and HRV at rest. Changes in LF can be a consequence of both sympathetic and parasympathetic activity, however, analyzing the other variables HF, TP, SSDN and rMSSD (all negative Spearman r) and due to the lack of changes in LF/HF ratio and LF(n.u.) we interpret that increased stress may be associated to decrease in overall heart rate variability. These changes were seen in healthy individuals and may point out an important mechanism in cardiovascular disease development.

Previous studies of physiological responses to music and noise showed the effect on the autonomic nervous system. The heart rate variability (HRV) has been used to assess the activation of the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous systems. The present study was aimed to examine HRV with exposure to four sine-wave pure tones (20 Hz, 50 Hz, 2 kHz and 15 kHz) in an environment where the sound intensity exceeded level 65 dB (A-weighted). The participants (20 adolescent girls) were lying in supine position during exposure protocol divided into 6 periods, the first time with generated sounds and the second time without sounds. In the protocol without sound exposure, the low frequency band of the HRV spectrum was increased compared to the basal state before examination (period_1: 6.05±0.29 ms2 compared to period_5: 6.56±0.20 ms2, p<0.05). The significant increase of root Mean Square of the Successive Differences (rMSSD, period_1: 4.09±0.16 s compared to period_6: 4.33±0.12 s, p<0.05) and prolongation of R to R peak (RR) interval (period_1: 889±30 ms compared to period_5: 973±30 ms, p<0.001) were observed in the protocol without sound exposure comparing to the protocol with sound exposure where only bradycardia was observed. Contrary to rather polemical data in literature our pilot study suggests that sounds (under given frequencies) have no impact on the heart rate variability and cardiac autonomic regulation.

Features of the heart rate variability at patients with acute disorder of cerebral circulation depending on localisation of ischemic damage and type of hemodynamics were studied in acute period of disease and in a condition of relative functional rest. Surveyed men and women (30–55 years old) were divided into 3 groups: patients with ischemic damage to the area of the left average brain artery, right average brain artery and with ischemia in vertebro-basilar department. According to indicators of the integral rheography of the body which was carried out in the acute period of a disease, patients of each group were divided into subgroups depending on hemodynamics type – with hyper dynamic, hypo dynamic and normo dynamic type of blood circulation. It was revealed that the highest activity of sympathetic link of regulation and also higher values of the index of tension and the index of vegetative balance characterized patients with ischemia in the area of right average brain artery and hyper dynamic type of blood circulation. The indicator of activity of regulatory systems characterized “overstrain of regulatory mechanisms” and also “exhaustion of mechanisms of regulation” at patients of this group in the acute period. However upon repeated examination 7 days later revealed the significant reduction of the values of the indicator of activity of regulatory systems. Similar indicators of the heart rate variability were found at patients with ischemic damage in the area of right average brain artery and normo dynamic type of blood circulation. Thus, it was detected that the greatest disorders of regulation of the cardiovascular system were characteristic of patients with ischemia in the area of right average brain artery both hyper dynamic and normo dynamic blood circulation types. Activation of parasympathetic and suppression of sympathetic link of regulation were noted in all patients on the seventh day of hospital stay regardless of localisation of ischemic damage and type of hemodynamics.

Introduction: Fibromyalgia syndrome is characterized by musculo-skeletal pain. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a versatile and promising non-invasive marker of the autonomous nervous system. Micro-physiotherapy involves manual physiotherapy that seeks to identify the primary cause of a disease or symptom and to stimulate self-healing, in which the body recognizes the aggressor (antigen) and begins the elimination process, through cellular and tissue reprogramming. Method: The sample was composed of 15 individuals, aged between 35 and 40 years, with fibromyalgia. The Nerve Express method was used to assess the variability of the heart rate. Two sessions of micro-physiotherapy were conducted using global methods, with an interval of 45 days between sessions. Results: Based on the HRV results, the high frequency band was confirmed at p=0.203, with the low frequency recording a statistically significant value of p=0.001, thereby demonstrating sympathetic activity. Upon comparison of the mean heartbeat before and after treatment, a value of p=0.0006 was obtained. A value of p=0.049 was recorded in the analysis of the median R-R interval values. Conclusion: The use of micro-physiotherapy as a treatment method for fibromyalgia effectively improved the lives of patients by promoting sympathicotonia.

Obesity is a risk factor of cardiovascular disease-related mortality and may be associated with changes in the autonomic nerve activity. Nurses working shifts and caring for patients are under great mental and physical pressure, and research has proven that these can negatively affect the body. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of obesity in nurses on their heart rate variability (HRV) and determine whether age or shift type moderates this influence. A questionnaire survey and HRV measurements were conducted on nurses at a hospital in Taiwan during a routine employee health checkup. HRV analysis was conducted using a noninvasive HRV monitor for five minutes. A total of 242 nurses with a mean age of 28.98 ± 6.56 years were enrolled in this study. An overly large waist circumference (WC) had a negative impact on high frequency (HF), low frequency (LF), and standard deviation of normal-to-normal interval (SDNN), while an overly high body mass index (BMI) had a negative impact on very low frequency (VLF) and SDNN. The interaction term “overly large WC × age” had a negative impact on HF ( β = − 0.21 , p = 0.010 ) and LF ( β = − 0.18 , p = 0.030 ), whereas the interaction term “overly high BMI×age” had a negative impact on HF ( β = − 0.27 , p = 0.001 ), LF ( β = − 0.19 , p = 0.023 ), and VLF ( β = − 0.17 , p = 0.045 ). The interaction terms “overly large WC × shift type” and “overly high BMI × shift type” did not influence any HRV parameters. As age increased, so did the degree to which the HF and LF of nurses with an overly large WC were lower than normal, and so did the degree to which the HF, LF, and VLF of nurses with an overly high BMI were lower than normal.

Heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback (BFB) can be used to reduce activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and increase activation of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). A growing body of research suggests that increased arousal of the SNS contributes to the sustained state of postconcussion syndrome (PCS). It has also been postulated that underactivation of the PNS may also play a role in the postinjury state of autonomic dystonia, wherein the autonomic nervous system is in a state of imbalance and does not return to normal. In addition to autonomic imbalance, patients who are generally advised not to engage in physical exertion until asymptomatic from concussion, are known to experience secondary symptoms of fatigue and reactive depression. Recent research has established that such symptoms can delay the recovery from concussion indefinitely. By addressing both autonomic dysfunction and the secondary symptoms of depression and anxiety, HRV BFB may be an effective treatment for PCS by strengthening self-regulatory control mechanisms in the body and improving autonomic balance. Recent studies have suggested that HRV BFB has a positive impact in reducing stress and anxiety among athletes, and concussed athletes with higher perceived control over their symptoms have been shown to have faster recoveries post-injury. The primary purpose of the following case study was, therefore, to assess the feasibility of implementing HRV BFB with a concussed athlete suffering from postconcussion syndrome (PCS). The second objective was to prospectively examine the impact of ten weeks of HRV biofeedback on refractory postconcussion symptoms. During this pilot case study, the athlete attended 10 weekly sessions of HRV BFB, according to the protocol set forth by Lehrer, Vaschillo, and Vaschillo (2000). After 10 weeks of HRV biofeedback, the athlete exhibited clinically significant improvements in total mood disturbance, postconcussion symptoms, and headache severity. The results suggest that HRV BFB may be a useful adjunctive treatment for PCS, associated with increases in HRV and enhanced cardiovagal activity. Given these findings, a randomized controlled trial is warranted.

Objective. As few, small studies have examined the impact of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) upon the heart rate variability of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), we sought to confirm whether ECT-associated improvement in depressive symptoms would be associated with increases in HRV linear and nonlinear parameters. Methods. After providing consent, depressed study participants (n=21) completed the Beck Depression Index (BDI), and 15-minute Holter monitor recordings, prior to their 1st and 6th ECT treatments. Holter recordings were analyzed for certain HRV indices: root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), low-frequency component (LF)/high-frequency component (HF) and short-(SD1) versus long-term (SD2) HRV ratios. Results. There were no significant differences in the HRV indices of RMSDD, LF/HF, and SD1/SD2 between the patients who responded, and those who did not, to ECT. Conclusion. In the short term, there appear to be no significant improvement in HRV in ECT-treated patients whose depressive symptoms respond versus those who do not. Future studies will reveal whether diminished depressive symptoms with ECT are reliably associated with improved sympathetic/parasympathetic balance over the long-term, and whether acute changes in sympathetic/parasympathetic balance predict improved mental- and cardiac-related outcomes.

The features of heart rate variability before, during and after a brief mental load in three age groups (17–21, 22–35 and 36–60 years old) were studied. It is shown that for all groups during the mental load some tension of central regulatory mechanisms of heart is typical. The highest degree of tension is found in subjects from the III group (36–60 years old). In these subjects the recovery of regulatory systems up to the baseline took more time. These changes of regulatory systems that occur in older age group, most probably, are connected with a decrease of adaptive responses and some limitation of functional capabilities. Refs 16. Figs 2.
