This study examined a comparison between Native Speakers (NS) of Indonesian and Indonesian language as a foreign language (Bahasa Indonesia untuk Penutur Asing - BIPA) learners in making email requests. In particular, this study analysed the different aspects of pragmatics of variations in structure and politeness in emails. This study involved nine NS of Indonesian who were studying master’s level programs at the University of Melbourne, and eighteen BIPA learners who took the subject Indonesian 4 in Semester 2, 2018 at the University of Melbourne. Participants wrote an email request based on a given scenario, which was requesting leave in the context of a workplace in Indonesia. The data were obtained by providing participants a description of the scenario, which prompted them to write an email request asking permission to take time off work. However, participants had freedom in terms of the style and structure of the email. In general, this study aimed to examine how their pragmatics varies, especially in terms of structure and politeness.

This paper focuses on the acquisition of German sentences by Italian native speakers in Foreign Language Teaching, with the verb located in second position, and the subject found in the middle field. The study is based upon a corpus of texts written by Italian students during their first six semesters at the University of Pisa. The first part of the study describes the main grammatical structural differences between Italian and German declarative sentences, referring to position of verb, subject and clause constituents. In the second part, I summarize the research results of the main German-Italian linguistic contrastive studies on the acquisition of word order in German, by focusing on declarative sentences with the subject in the middle field. The final part of this paper focuses on the linguistic and contextual factors influencing the acquisition process for further development in this field of study, in order to offer suggestions for foreign language teaching of German.

The paper deals with the observation of the specifics of online teaching of lexicology and syntax of the Serbian language at the Faculty of Philology of students studying a foreign language. The aim is to notice possibilities of realization of online teaching. The research was conducted on the basis of the implementation of the teaching process in the subject Serbian language 2 (lexicology and syntax) and a survey of students on the advantages and disadvantages of online teaching. The analysis showed that online teaching provides shortcomings in the form of insufficient time for the teacher to deal in more detail with student ambiguities, but also provides numerous opportunities for progress in education – mostly in terms of student time organization and uninterrupted questioning, which is not always the case. Based on the obtained results, we will try to give methodological implications for teaching practice, which concern the possibility of improving online teaching of the Serbian language at the university level.

The subject of this work is to determine the ways in which students of Serbian as a foreign language, both philologists and non-philologists, construct sentences in written discourse at a beginner level. Our aim is to determine: (1) the sentence structure (simple, expanded, or compound sentences); (2) prepositional phrases of which they are comprised; (3) sentence informativeness; (4) types of word formation sentence constructions; (5) derivation of interrogative and negative sentence forms. The corpus consists of exit tests gathered at the end of the course Serbian as a foreign language at the Center for Serbian as a foreign language at the Faculty of Philology and Arts at the University of Kragujevac. The analysis of the corpus has shown that students of Serbian as a foreign language at a beginner level form simple, but informative sentences to the extent which enables them to complete basic communication processes. We will attempt to give methodical suggestions for the teaching practice which would contribute to the elimination of the errors made in the process of sentence formation, the usage of prepositional phrases, in the first place, and the process of the distribution of lexemes which comprise one sentence structure.

The article deals with the issue of improving the quality of learning a foreign language, namely the ways to eliminate the problems that occur during teaching the subject in distance learning mode. By means of the Ishikawa diagram the basic groups of factors that affect the quality of learning a foreign language specifically in distance learning mode are figured out. After that the factors that cannot be affected directly by a teacher are excluded from consideration. The remaining factors are carefully considered in order to find which one of them is the best in terms of neutralizing the stated problem. A number of modern methods of teaching foreign languages is analyzed; as the result, a range of indicative tasks for qualitative control of learning a foreign language is proposed, with basic features of distance learning taken into account. In conclusion it is pointed out that the proposed tasks can be used by the university tutors to enhance the quality of control of learning a foreign language in distance learning mode.

While practice is paramount to achieve fluency and accuracy in a foreign language, Higher Education is understandably limited in the amount of language practice it can offer to its students. The initiative discussed here aims to address this issue by providing peer-led discussion groups in languages in a systematic manner. For the past three years, a team of language practitioners at the University of Limerick, Ireland have developed a programme whereby groups of native speakers receive training before facilitating discussion groups and/or one-to-one sessions. In this study, we will first present an overview of the initiative. We will then focus on the training offered to the peer-facilitators. The main principles of the training package will be explained: it seeks to prepare the facilitators to select relevant topics, to focus on language fluency and to provide constructive feedback to participating students. Finally, we will draw some conclusions from our experience, provide some recommendations and discuss the value of peer-supported activities to integrate International students in their host university.

Not only are such learners restricted in their exposure to the L2 in the formal academic framework, due to the limited face to face learning time, but, more significantly, they lack the exposure to the language's 'real world' as it exists outside the language classroom. This study  focuses on analysing the students’motivation for studying Indonesian as a foreign language at Go Bali, a one-semester international study program  at the University of Udayana,  particularly investigating the students’motivation during the course and analyse how the environment influences their learning motivation. This study involved 76 foreign students and 4 instructors in four Indonesian Language classrooms at the program and the data were collected through survey techniques, classroom observations and interviews. The results show that the students’ motivation in learning Bahasa Indonesia is varied and in general is relatively low. However, the environment where they study the language has actually given an advantages for most students in which they become more motivated to pick up the knowledge of the language for their daily lives in Bali, apart from whether it will give further benefits for their future or not.

The article is devoted to the consideration of the process of the successive formation of metasubject results in the framework of project / research activities of students in the context of learning foreign languages. In this regard, the requirements for the degree of formation of metasubject skills formed within the subject of "Foreign language" at various levels of education and taking into account the stages of project activity (including research project) – goal setting, organization and planning, implementation, reflection, presentation. The article describes a project conducted by the Department of foreign languages and linguodidactics of Irkutsk state University called "the Future in the project", implemented in the framework of the subjects "Methodology of teaching foreign languages" at the University and "Foreign language" at school in order to implement the continuity of the content of teaching project/research activities of students at different levels of education.

ABSTRAK Dalam tulisan tugas karya ilmiah mahasiswa Jurusan Manajemen Akuntansi, Fakultas Ekonomi dan Bisnis, UPN “Veteran” Jakarta, masih dijumpai adanya kesalahan penerapaan ejaan, diksi, dan pengalimatan yang kurang efektif. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan kesalahan penerapan ejaan, diksi, dan kalimat efektif. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian adalah metode desktiptif kualitatif, yaitu mendeskripsikan data yang terpilih yang terkait dengan kesalahan ejaan, diski, dan kalimat efektif. Adapun acuan untuk menganalisis data penulis menggunakan Pedoman Umum Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia, edisi tahun 2016. Untuk menganalisis pengalimatan, penulis mengacu pada Bahasa Indonesia: Dasar-Dasar Pengembangan Kepribadian, edisi tahun 2018. Hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa dalam tugas karya ilmiah mahsiswa, terdapat kesalahan seperti berikut. 1) Penerapan ejaan khusunya penulisan singkatan nama sifat Tuhan, singkatan gelar, penulisan nama dalam sebuah kutipan, dan Penulisan unsur-unsur bahasa asing. 2) pilihan kata yang kurang tepat yang belum sesuai dengan konteksnya. 3) Terdapat kekeliruan dalam membuat kalimat, seperti kurang cermat dalam menyikapi ekonomi bahasa, konjungsi, dan ketikdakjelasan subjek. Kata Kunci: ejaan, diksi, pengalimatan ABSTRACT In writing of scientific assignments of the Accounting Management Department’s students, Faculty of Economics and Business, UPN "Veterans" Jakarta, there are still spelling errors, diction, and ineffective wording. This study aims at describing the errors in the application of spelling, diction and effective sentences. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method, which describes the selected data related to spelling errors, discourse, and effective sentences. The writer used Pedoman Umum Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia, 2016 edition, as reference. To analyze the wording, the writer refers to Bahasa Indonesia: Dasar-Dasar Pengembangan Kepribadian, 2018 edition. The findings are; 1) Application of the spelling especially writing the abbreviation for the name of the attribute of God, abbreviation for the title, writing the name in a quote, and writing the elements of a foreign language. 2) improper choice of words that do not fit the context. 3) There are mistakes in making sentences, such as inaccuracy in dealing with the economics of language, conjunctions, and typing obscurity of the subject. Critical thinking is a special type of mental activity aimed at interpreting the world around us and evaluating the expected results. In this work, we consider the critical thinking development of linguistic university students in the process of teaching listening in English, analyze the terminology on the subject under study, develop and describe a three-stage model for the critical thinking development of linguistic university students through listening. A foreign language has a huge educational potential for the development of a student’s personality, and the development of critical thinking is most actively carried out in foreign language communication. It is believed that students form a new world view, close to native speakers’. Thus, critical thinking allows us to consider objects, phenomena and processes from different sides, to find non-standard solutions, to comprehend familiar information in a different way. We give definition of the concept of “critical thinking”. The proposed algorithm is based on the technology of developing critical thinking, which is used in synthesis with the model of teaching listening. Since the technology of developing critical thinking of linguistic university students is represented by three stages: chal-lenge, content comprehension and reflection. It is easily projected onto the above-mentioned model of three-phase listening teaching, which is mandatory for students of a linguistic university. The standard tasks presented in the work on the critical thinking development through listening form a system of exercises aimed at achieving a certain result at each stage of teaching.
