Aim: To explore the efficacy potential of ethanolic root extract of Rauwolfia serpentina against Chromium (VI) toxicity in fish, Channa punctatus. Methodology: Acclimatized fish were divided into six groups, each having 15 specimens. Group I served as a control, while Group II and III fish were exposed to ethanolic root extract of Rauwolfia serpentina (3 mg l-1) and Cr (VI) (96 h LC50/10; 7.68 mg l-1), respectively. Groups IV, V and VI fish were exposed to three different concentrations of ethanolic root extract of Rauwolfia serpentina (1, 2 and 3 mg l-1), simultaneously with 7.68 mg l-1 of Cr (VI). The induction of micronuclei, chromosomal aberrations, protein levels and liver enzymes-SGOT, SGPT and ALP- were assessed in fish of all six groups after designated exposure periods. Results: A significant induction (p<0.05) in chromosomal aberrations, micronuclei frequency and activities of liver enzymes (SGOT, SGPT and ALP) coupled with reduced protein level was recorded in Group III as compared to the control. Whereas, a significant (p<0.05) decrease in the frequency of chromosomal aberrations, micronuclei induction and activities of liver enzymes together with an increase in protein level was observed in Group IV, V and VI with respect to control and Group III. Interpretation: Present investigation evince the ameliorative potential of ethanolic root extract of Rauwolfia serpentina against Cr (VI) induced chromosomal aberrations and micronuclei induction, changes in protein levels and biochemical alterations of liver enzymes in Channa punctatus. Thus would help present work helps in saving the aquatic biodiversity and increasing the production of protein rich food fish.

Aim: The present study was designed to evaluate the plausible efficacy of ethanolic extract of Rauwolfia serpentina to mitigate copper induced toxicity by investigating cytogenetic biomarkers, i.e., chromosome aberrations (CA) and micronucleus (MN) formation; assessment of biochemical changes in liver enzymes (SGOT, SGPT and ALP) and estimation of protein levels in a freshwater spotted snakehead fish(Channa punctatus). Methodology: The experiment was carried out in six groups, each having 15 specimens for 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr. Group I served as control. Groups II and III were maintained with 3 mg l-1 of Rauwolfia root extract and 0.4 mg l-1 of Cu2+, respectively. Groups IV, V, and VI were simultaneously co-exposed with 0.4 mg l-1 of Cu2+ and three different concentrations of Rauwolfia root extract 1, 2 and 3 mg l-1, respectively. For the genotoxicity assessment, blood and kidney tissues were used. Hepatic impairments were assessed after each exposure period. Results: A significant increase (p<0.05) in chromosomal aberrations, micronuclei frequency, activity of liver enzymes (SGOT, SGPT and ALP) and a decrease in protein level were recorded in Group III in comparison to the control. Groups co-exposed with Cu2+and Rauwolfia serpentine showed a significant (p<0.05) decrease in cytogenetic biomarkers, activity of liver enzymes and an increase in protein levels, as compared to Group III, with respect to control in a dose dependent manner. Interpretation: Thus, result of the present investigation establish the efficacy of R. serpentina root extract against Cu2+ induced toxicity in spotted snakehead (Channa punctatus).

The agricultural crops and horticultural plants are always under constant assault caused by diseases, insect pests, viruses, and other pathogens which may substantially reduce yield. Chili Pepper (Capsicum annum L.) is a popular horticultural plant of the Solanaceae family in Indonesia. Some serious diseases widely found in chili peppers, are anthracnose (Colletotrichum capsici), leaf spot (Cercospora capsici) and fruit rot (Phytophthora capsici). To manage the potential problems, this study is aimed to provide an explanatory knowledge of the use of plant-based pesticide to control the diseases in chili peppers. The information is meant to fill the knowledge gaps in the use of plant-based pesticide to control the chili diseases. The use of nonchemical pesticide benefits not only the environment but also as an organic strategy for disease management. This research used a randomized complete block design (RCBD) categorized into four groups and six different treatments. The organic pesticides were prepared from the extract of neem leaves, soursop leaves, lemongrass extract, tuba root extract, and kenikir/Cosmos caudatus extract). The result indicates that neem leaves are the most effective organic pesticides to control the chili pepper disease in Indonesia.

Rauwolfia Serpentina is a medicinal herb used for hypertension and psychotic disorders. In this study neuroprotective effects of Rauwolfia serpentina plant extract following the exposure to acute immobilization (2h) stress in rats were investigated. The extract of the plant administered orally at non-sedative dose 30mg/kg before immobilization (2h) to observe stress induced behavioral deficits. Neuroprotective efficacy of extract was assessed in terms of alteration in activities of antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). We also monitored leptin, corticosterone and glucose levels in plasma to obtain an imminent role of Rauwolfia serpentina. Animals were orally administered with Rauwolfia serpentina (30mg/kg) while controls receive saline (1ml/kg). Each group was subdivided into stressed and unstressed groups. Behavioral deficits were monitored in the open field and light dark activity box. Animals were decapitated; plasma samples were collected for CAT, SOD, corticosterone, leptin and glucose estimation. Orally administered Rauwolfia serpentina attenuates stress induced behavioral deficits and rise antioxidant enzymes levels. Plant extract also prevents the stress-induced increase in corticosterone but glucose levels do not manifest any significant change. Immobilization stress (2h) induced decrease of plasma leptin levels were reversed by Rauwolfia serpentina. Therefore, the present study suggests that Rauwolfia serpentina has potentiality to antagonize undesirable effects of immobilization stress (2h) by reducing stress perception and inhibitory effects of stress on the activity of hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis and animal behaviors. Despite an apparent role of Rauwolfia serpentina the mechanism of action at molecular level causing the acute anxiolytic effects of oral administration of plant extract remains to be determined.

Rauwolfia serpentina (R. serpentina) root extract was used to study antifungal activity against Neurospora crassa (Ema) as well as mutation, mating type, segregation of the fungus. It was found that more concentration of root extract was used in VM media, higher antifungal activity was observed. After mutation in N. crassa conidia with root extract of R. serpentina, 5 groups of morphological mutants viz. albino (al 98), vigorous (vg 77), fluffy (fl 139), conidial band (con.band 221) and cauliflower (clf 155) were obtained. From genetic study, it was found that all the mutants formed perithecia crossing with EmA which confirmed that mating type of all the mutants is ‘a’ and is not changed due to mutation. Besides, segregation ratio between mutant and wild isolates was about 1:1 which confirmed that mutation takes place in the nuclear gene, not cytoplasmic. Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind. The methanol extract of Raphanus sativus root extract showed a protective effect on paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner. Degree of lipid peroxidation caused by paracetamol was measured in terms of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and protection was measured in reference to serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate aspartate transaminase (SGPT), and blood and hepatic levels of antioxidants like glutathione and catalase. Administration of extract along with paracetamol showed significant protection. Levels of TBARS were found to be low, activities of SGOT and SGPT were low, while hepatic glutathione levels were significantly higher in experimental rats that received the mixture of paracetamol and the extract as compared to rats that received paracetamol only. Activities of catalase were also high in all experimental groups. Thus this study indicates the involvement of Raphanus sativus root extract with antioxidants like glutathione and catalase in rendering protection against paracetamol-induced lipid peroxidation and hepatotoxicity.
