Technology has been gradually introduced into our society, and the field of education is no exception due to technology’s ability to improve the teaching–learning process. Furthermore, within the area of physical education (PE), its importance has been highlighted by the existence of specific apps for physical activity that can be used inside and outside the classroom to assess physical condition, as well as through the potential that virtual and augmented reality can have in such assessment. Therefore, the main objectives for this study were (1) to perform a bibliometric analysis of the articles published in the Web of Science (WoS) on technology in PE and (2) to analyze the articles published on augmented or virtual reality in PE found through this search. The results show that although studies on technology in PE (461 articles) have begun to consolidate over the last five years (there was a turning point in 2015), with the USA being the most influential country in this area, specific research on the use of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) is still at a very early stage (22 articles with a small growth in 2017), with Spain being the most influential country; much more research is needed to achieve its consolidation.

The influence of augmented reality (RA) and virtual reality (RV) techniques is analyzed in the process of teaching-learning for the human anatomy subject, in particular in health science students. For this purpose, two applications have been designed for mobile devices and virtual reality glasses with the purpose of incorporating these techniques in teaching for the study of human anatomy to facilitate the students with better learning of anatomical body contents through these technological procedures. In this way it is intended to achieve a better transmission of knowledge to students in an effective, visual, interactive, and close way. The authors believe that these technological tools constitute an excellent complementary medium to the traditional atlases, facilitating the learning of the anatomical structures.

In recent years, teachers have started to integrate augmented reality (AR) technology as a potential learning tool into classroom activities. The main concern is the quality of the existing applications rather than brand-newness. Therefore, this chapter focuses on the components of a good educational AR application based on the experiences of teachers and to examine the current situation on the integration of AR to learning environments. Qualitative methodology was used in this study. The sample consisted of 24 teachers working in public schools in Turkey. The data were collected via semi-structured interviews and analyzed through the thematic analysis. The results showed that the components of a good AR application in education were gathered under four main themes: “analysis process,” “design process,” “teaching-learning process,” and “evaluation components.” Implications for the design and use of the AR applications in educational settings were also included in the study.

Teaching descriptive geometry, in the context of this study, is characterized by the continuous investment in recognizing digital representation technologies which can enhance the didactic activities in architectural training. This study describes this trajectory which includes the use of virtual reality, augmented reality and parametric modelling, as well as freehand drawing and the production of physical models both by automating the unfolding process and by digital fabrication processes of 3D printing and laser cutting. In addition to questioning the relevance and sustainability of the infrastructure needed to ensure the continuation of this trajectory, the potentialities identified in each of the learning activities that have been structure, are shown. Although these potentialities are specific to this context, it is considered that this type of record contributes to understand the issues being faced in teaching practices.

Nowadays, the combination of new technologies and the use of mobile devices opens up a new range of teaching–learning strategies in different agricultural engineering degrees. This article presents an augmented reality tool that allows for improved spatial viewing for students who have certain difficulties with viewing graphic representations of agronomic systems and devices. This tool is known as ARTID (Augmented Reality for Teaching, Innovation and Design) and consists in a free-access mobile application for devices using the Android operating system. The proposed method provides each exploded drawing or overall drawing with a QR code that can be used by students to view their 3D models by augmented reality in their own mobile devices. An evaluation experience was carried out to assess the validity of the tool on different devices and the acceptance and satisfaction level of this kind of resources in subjects of graphic expression in engineering. Finally, an example of application in the agronomic domain is provided by the 3D virtual model of portable ferticontrol equipment that comprises the different structures and tanks, which, if viewed by conventional graphical representations, may entail a certain level of difficulty. Thanks to this tool, reality can be merged with the virtual world to help favour the understanding of certain concepts and to increase student motivation in agronomy studies.

This paper aims to introduce a free educational web platform that offers a repository for viewing interactive content, using Computer Graphics (CG), Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) resources. The platform provides curatorship for third party and copyright projects. Within the scope of this research, two projects of the platform were subject to a qualitative evaluation. The evaluation carried out focused on the analysis of the motivating potential of using the platform during the distance teaching-learning process. It was possible to collect positive evidence about its viability for use in supporting both presential and remote learning.

Malang Rapat is one of the villages which is located in the range of coastal region, Bintan regency, Riau islands Province. Most people in this village do not complete elementary level of education. Only a few graduate from Elementary School, Junior High School and Senior High School. The rate of education and its quality of human resources are very low. This condition is due to the monotonous system of teaching-learning process and lack of facilities and infrastructures. These are the problems that cause low quality of education. This research aims at developing teaching-learning process by applying Augmented Reality-Based Fun Book Technology (Round Table Learning Media) for Teaching-Learning of Coastal Community. This application is to develop knowledge by applying quizzes and games. The result obtained is that this technology is capable for handling the problems of low quality of education with its monotonous system of teaching-learning process.

Las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación (TIC) enriquecen el proceso enseñanza-aprendizaje; el uso de los ambientes en Realidad Aumentada como apoyo a los procedimientos odontológicos, a través de la utilización de procesos educativos en la preclínica de ortodoncia, surge como alternativa para mejorar la práctica de los estudiantes en diferentes rutinas. El objetivo general de la investigación fue diseñar, implementar y evaluar una aplicación de la Realidad Aumentada como apoyo a los procedimientos odontológicos. La investigación se realizó en tres fases. Al aplicar la estrategia didáctica propuesta se buscaba determinar si esta es una herramienta más eficaz que el método de enseñanza tradicional para la enseñanza de los contenidos relacionados con doblaje de alambres en ortodoncia. Cognitive approaches to teaching generate learning through the interaction between the subject and object of study. One of the strategies to create this interaction is related to the application of virtual and augmented reality in the teaching-learning processes. Through a systematic literature review, this work aims to describe the approaches used to measure the impacts on student learning who used virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in the teaching-learning processes of engineering courses, the impacts on learning, and student satisfaction. The surveys showed that 70% of research analyzed, students who used virtual reality or augmented reality learned more, and 90% of the research described that students who used virtual or augmented reality were more satisfied with the new approach than the traditional teaching approach. The conclusion is that there are positive impacts, in the vast majority of cases, on learning and the satisfaction of students who use virtual or augmented reality in the teaching-learning processes applied in engineering courses.
