Since the success of any tourism business is determined by tourism planning, development research and marketing, the first thing we review in this article is GIS application for tourism planning. Both tourism and IT increasingly provide strategic opportunities and powerful tools for economic growth, redistribution of wealth and development of equity around the globe. GIS technology offers great opportunities for the development of modern tourism applications using maps. This technology integrates common database operations such as query with the unique visualization and geographic analysis benefits offered by maps. GIS is used for bringing the georeferenced data (spatial and non spatial) of geographic location Zlatibor and Zlatar into digital maps. Each object is assigned to a thematic layer. Each layer combines related objects like roads, building, protected areas or watercourses. In this research the authors used GIS in three types of applications such as inventory, analysis and evaluation of plan based on tourism development.

This paper aims to analyse the religious structure and its evolution in the Apuseni Mountains (Romania). Thusly, we employed statistical data from three distinct population censuses, the first one being the Austro-Hungarian census of 1880. The next one was the one in 1930, organised by Romanian authorities. Furthermore, it was the first and most important demographic census after the Great Union of 1918. The last census taken into consideration was the one in 2011, the second census of the 21st century. After obtaining the numerical data from the three censuses, we processed it using Microsoft Excel. Three tables were generated, emphasizing the numerical values and the percentages for each religion or confession for each census. The map depicting the geographic location of the study area was developed using GIS technology (ArcGis 10.3). We determined that Christians have been dominating the Apuseni Mountains and the Orthodox faith had and still has the most adherents. Likewise, the political-administrative factor heavily influenced census operations and also produced imbalances in the religious structure, especially after the 1948 abolition of the monarchy.

The author makes an att empt to thinking in terms of architectural science challenges of globalization. Globalization is seen by the author, not only as dissemination of the stereotypical image of urban forms, but also terrestrial civilization; the loss of diversity in urban areas, the unifi cation of the urban environment. The article presents several levels of study of the problem: statement; analysis and evaluation process with deducing its laws; refl ection in order to overcome the negative factors, and process optimization. The author supports the idea of regional identity as a condition for the existence of an original architecture in a globalizing world. The article presents the results of the analysis, systematization and generalization of theoretical research in the fi eld of architecture and construction, devoted to the problems of globalization as a factor of city planning. The semantic boundaries of the problem fi eld of modern urbanization have been defi ned according to the growth of globalization tendencies in urban planning development. The direction of the optimization of urban technologies has been denoted corresponding diff erent paradigms of city-formation.

Agent-based modeling (ABM) is a way of representing complex systems of autonomous agents or actors, and of simulating the multiple potential outcomes of these agents’ behaviors and interactions in the form of a range of alternatives or futures. Despite the complexity of the tourism system, and the power and flexibility of ABM to overcome the assumptions such as homogeneity, linearity, equilibrium, and rationality typical of traditional modeling techniques, ABM has received little attention from tourism researchers and practitioners. The purpose of this paper is to introduce ABM to a wider tourism audience. Specifically, the appropriateness of tourism as a phenomenon to be subjected to ABM is established; the power and benefits of ABM as an alternative scientific mechanism are illuminated; the few existing applications of ABM in the tourism arena are summarized; and, a range of potential applications in the areas of tourism planning, development, marketing and management is proposed.

Sustainability has become a common term in the lexicon of most tourism scholars and many industry professionals. Yet active infusion of sustainability thinking and initiatives in practice remains less consistent. This exploratory study investigates awareness and understanding of, and engagement with, sustainability concepts and practices by those involved in – or having the ability to influence – tourism planning. A survey of tourism office directors and planners reveals limited and divergent understanding of the basic underlying characteristics of sustainability amongst these two critical stakeholders groups, both of which are core to the planning, development, marketing and management of tourism. Findings suggest the need for continued effort to translate the huge volume of sustainability-focused tourism research into terms and formats more digestible by industry professionals, as well as opportunities for local entities to take the lead in bringing diverse stakeholders together to drive a greater emphasis on sustainability within their communities.

Over the years, the oil and gas industries have been engaging in traditional practices and procedures in their mode of operation in pipeline management. This has brought some draw backs in terms of planning and mapping of pipeline facilities. Several challenges in terms of natural disaster, equipment failure, and human error could not be averted because the traditional methods could not produce survey maps and plans required for “real time “applications. The advent of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology in the oil and gas industries has brought about rapid changes and improvements in the activities of the oil and gas industries in terms of exploration, production and transmission of products from the field to the end users. In this research, digital maps showing oil and gas pipelines as well as other relevant features such as terrain, vegetation and settlements within the study area were generated. A relational database model was developed using pipeline attributes such as; the pipeline diameter, date of installation, pressure, coating and soil type. Queries on the database provided the required information such as; the required date of maintenance of pipes, areas prone to sabotage, areas with specific pipe diameters in various sections, previous spillages and the affected areas.

Hospitality, as a cultural receptional factor, has a great importance for a tourism planning and tourism & geographical destination development. The basic methodology will include collecting data for statistical analysis and survey research that will be used to assess opinions of tourists, tourism managers and tourism employees.

Tourism planning is a complex process that includes the involvement of a number of factors during the process of decision-making. Taking into account that any rational planning of tourism should be in line with the principles of sustainable development, which means to preserve the physical and social-geographical attributes of a destination, but at the same time striking a balance with the interests of the local communities, private and public sectors, the use of geographic information systems (GIS) has become an imperative in the process. Tourism is an activity which depends on natural resources, but is also a phenomenon which can have a destructive effect on the natural geographic environment in case of an inadequate access to its planning and development. In addition, during the daily management and operations of tourist facilities, a large number of tourists are a big consumer of energy and water and at the same time produce a significant amount of solid waste, hazardous gases and waste water. These negative impacts of tourism can be prevented or reduced by the application of certain GIS technology in order to achieve sustainable tourism development. This papers main objective is to explore the potential of GIS application in a process of tourism planning and its sustainable development, for the purpose of long-term survival of the tourism destination.
