Effect of pH Cycling Followed by Simulated Toothbrushing on the Surface Roughness and Bacterial Adhesion of Bulk-fill Composite Resins

SUMMARY The aim was to evaluate, in vitro, quantitatively and qualitatively, the effect of pH cycling and simulated toothbrushing on surface roughness (Ra) and bacterial adhesion (Cn) of bulk-fill composite resins. Thirty specimens of each composite resin, 5 mm wide and 4 mm high, were obtained: group 1 (control): Filtek Z250 (Z250); group 2: Filtek Bulk-Fill (FTK); group 3: Tetric N-Ceram Bulk-Fill (TTC); and group 4: Aura Bulk-Fill (AUR). After 24 hours, the specimens were polished and then alternated with demineralization/remineralization solutions for 15 cycles of 24 hours each at 37°C. Then the specimens were submitted to simulated toothbrushing. The Ra and Cn measurements were quantitatively analyzed in three stages: after polishing (Ra0 and Cn0), after pH cycling (Ra1 and Cn1), and after simulated toothbrushing (Ra2 and Cn2). The Ra values were submitted to two-way analysis of variance, followed by the Tukey test (α=0.05). The Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by multiple comparisons, was applied for Cn analysis. Surface topography and bacterial adhesion were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Z250, FTK, and TTC showed no significant change in Ra regardless of the treatment performed; AUR obtained increased Ra at Ra2 (p<0.05). FTK differed from the others at Cn0 and Cn1 (p<0.05). At Cn2, there was no difference among the composite resins. SEM images showed the exposure of fillers and microcavities at Ra1 and Ra2. There was greater bacterial adhesion at Cn1 for Z250 and FTK. It was concluded that the pH cycling caused surface degradation of all composite resins, which was potentiated by simulated toothbrushing. However, only AUR presented an increased Ra. Bacterial adhesion occurred on all composite resins after pH cycling; however, after simulated toothbrushing, adhesion of dispersed bacteria was similar for all the composite resin groups.

SUMMARY This study evaluated the effect of different chairside polishing systems on the surface roughness and topography of monolithic zirconia. Thirty-five monolithic zirconia specimens (Lava PLUS, 3M ESPE) were fabricated and divided into five groups of seven and polished with the following: Group 1 (WZ)—Dura white stone followed by Shofu zirconia polishing kit; Group 2 (SZ)—Shofu zirconia polishing kit; Group 3 (CE)—Ceramiste porcelain polishers; Group 4 (CM)—Ceramaster porcelain polishers; and Group 5 (KZ)—Komet ZR zirconia polishers. All specimens were ground with a fine-grit diamond bur prior to polishing procedures to simulate clinical finishing. Baseline and post-polishing profilometric readings were recorded and delta Ra values (difference in mean surface roughness before and after polishing) were computed and analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Scheffe post hoc test (p<0.05). Representative scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the ground but unpolished and polished specimens were acquired. Delta Ra values ranged from 0.146 for CE to 0.400 for KZ. Delta Ra values for KZ, WZ, and SZ were significantly greater than for CE. Significant differences in delta Ra values were also observed between KZ and CM. The SEM images obtained were consistent with the profilometric findings. Diamond-impregnated polishing systems were more effective than silica carbide–impregnated ones in reducing the surface roughness of ground monolithic zirconia.

ABSTRACT Background The dentin desensitizers available for in-office application for prevention and/or treatment of post restorative dentinal hypersensitivity, act by blocking the open dentinal tubules. In doing so, they may influence the bond strength of the restorative resins. Thus, the aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of desensitizers on the shear bond strength of dentin adhesives and to check the extent of dentinal tubule occlusion caused by these desensitizers. Materials and Methods Sixty-four premolars were randomly divided into four groups of sixteen each. The middle depth dentin was exposed by on the buccal surface and was etched using 37% phosphoric acid and rinsed. They were assigned to, Group 1: Gluma desensitizer, Group 2: Vivasens desensitizer, Group 3: Gluma Comfort Bond and desensitizer, and Group 4: Adper Single Bond 2. Composite resin post of 2 mm in height and width were built on these specimens. The samples were then mounted in acrylic resin blocks. Universal testing machine was used to test the shear bond strength. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc Tukey's test. Results The mean values of the shear bond strength were for: Group 1—18.61 ± 1.03 MPa, Group 2—17.53 ± 1.36 MPa, Group 3—22.63 ± 1.61 MPa and Group 4—23.12 ± 1.02 MPa. There was a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) among the groups. Conclusion The use of dentin desensitizers’ influences bond strength between the tooth and the adhesive. Among the various agents, the single bottle system containing Gluma comfort bond and desensitizer had the best adhesion among the desensitizer groups. ABSTRACT Aim To investigate and compare the effects of toothbrushes with different hardness on abrasion and surface roughness of composite resins. Materials and methods Toothbrushes (DENT. EX Slimhead II 33, Lion Dental Products Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan) marked as soft, medium and hard, were used to brush 10 beam-shaped specimens of each of three composites resins (Venus [VEN], Venus Diamond [VED] and Venus Pearl [VEP]; HeraeusKulzer) with standardized calcium carbonate slurry in a multistation testing machine (2N load, 60 Hz). After each of five cycles with 10k brushing strokes the wear depth and surface roughness of the specimens were determined. After completion of 50k strokes representative samples were inspected by SEM. Data were treated with ANOVA and regression analyses (p < 0.05). Results Abrasion of the composite resins increased linearly with increasing number of brushing cycles (r2 > 0.9). Highest wear was recorded for VEN, lowest for VED. Hard brushes produced significantly higher wear on VEN and VEP, whereas no difference in wear by toothbrush type was detected for VED. Significantly highest surface roughness was found on VED specimens (Ra > 1.5 μm), the lowest one on VEN (Ra < 0.3 μm). VEN specimens showed increased numbers of pinhole defects when brushed with hard toothbrushes, surfaces of VEP were uniformly abraded without level differences between the prepolymerized fillers and the glass filler-loaded matrix, VED showed large glass fillers protruding over the main filler-loaded matrix portion under each condition. Conclusion Abrasion and surface roughness of composite resins produced by toothbrushing with dentifrice depend mainly on the type of restorative resin. Hardness grades of toothbrushes have minor effects only on abrasion and surface roughness of composite resins. No relationship was found between abrasion and surface roughness. Clinical significance The grade of the toothbrush used has minor effect on wear, texture and roughness of the composite resin. Introduction: Composite resins have become one of the most commonly used direct restorative materials for anterior and posterior teeth.Objectives: To observe and analyze the gap at the resin dentin interface in class II cavities restored with light cure composite resin in four experimental groups employing 37% phosphoric acid or self etching monomers and restored with /without light cure flowable composite resin.Methods: 40 sound maxillary first premolars, extracted due to orthodontic reasons was taken, distoproximal cavities were prepared and divided into 4 groups. Teeth of Group 1 was etched by 37% Phosphoric acid and light cure flowable composite resin was used, in group 2 ,two coats of self etching acidic monomer were applied and light cure flowable composite resin was used. Teeth of group 3 was etched with 37% phosphoric acid and restored without light cure flowable composite resin and in group 4, two coats of self etching acidic monomer were applied and restored without using light cure flowable composite resin material. Thermocycling was done after finishing and polishing and viewed under scanning electron microscope to observe and analyze the gap between tooth and the restoration.Result: Gap was observed at dentin-composite resin interface in all 4 groups. Results were evaluated by F-test and Manwhitney U test. Objective: To evaluate the influence of different additional polymerization methods on the microhardness of two direct composite resins. Methods: Direct Composite resins samples (Fill Magic and Opallis) and a Laboratory Composite Resin (Ceramage) were lightcured according to manufacturer instructions. Then, the direct resins were submitted to additional polymerization. Experimental groups were divided into (n = 5): group 1: Conventional Polymerization; group 2: Extra Light (80s); group 3: Autoclave; group 4: Laboratory Resin Ceramage. Vickers hardness test was carried out after a week of light-free storage in water, and results were subjected to ANOVA / Tukey statistical analysis. Results: Resin Lab Ceramage showed higher astatistically significant microhardness within all other resins in this study (p £ 0.05); Fill Magic showed no statistically significant difference between the groups tested compared to its control (p> 0.05); Opallis resin submitted to autoclave was the only method that showed a higher statistically significant difference compared to the control group (p £ 0.05). Conclusion: It concludes that hardness of a direct composite resin tested - Opallis - was increased by Autoclave post-cure polymerization, however, not enough to achieve the hardness of a laboratory composite. Furthermore, increasing lightcuring time does not produce a harder surface.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a rugosidade superficial de resinas compostas à base silorano e metacrilato submetidas a diferentes técnicas de acabamento/polimento. Foram preparadas 12 amostras de disco de cada resina composta: P90®, Z350® e Carisma, divididas em 12 grupos de acordo com a técnica de acabamento / polimento: sem acabamento / polimento (controle); acabamento com ponta diamantada 1112 FF; acabamento com ponta diamantada 1112 FF associada a Enhance / Pogo; acabamento com ponta diamantada 1112 FF associada a Enhance / Pogo / Polishing / Pastas Poli I e II / Fotogloss. Após as leituras iniciais da rugosidade da superfície, os espécimes foram submetidos a ciclos mecânicos (1.200.000 ciclos) e submetidos imediatamente a leituras de rugosidade final. As medias de rugosidade superfícial foram analisadas estatisticamente por ANOVA e teste de Tukey-Kramer (α = 0,05). As imagens de MEV foram realizadas após o acabamento / polimento e após a ciclagem mecânica. O compósito P90 mostrou valores de rugosidade superficial semelhantes a outros compósitos investigados. Tough, mostrou diferença significativa nas técnicas de acabamento / polimento. O grupo de pontas damantadas apresentou maior rugosidade superficial que diferiu das outras resinas compostas (α <0,05). Enance / Pogo mostrou os menores resultados, que não apresentaram diferença em relação ao grupo de pasta de polimento (α> 0,05). O material restaurador posterior de baixa contração apresentou rugosidade superficial semelhante quando comparado as resinas compostas de dimetacrilato e são restaurações adequadas para região posterior.Palavras-chave: Dente. Resinas de Silorano.  Propriedades de Superfície. AbstractThe aim of this study was to evaluate the surface roughness of a silorane and methacrylate-based composite resins subjected to different finishing/polishing techniques. Twelve disk specimens were prepared from each composite resin: P90®, Z350® and Charisma, divided into 12 groups according to the finishing/polishing technique: no finishing/polishing (control); finishing with 1112 FF diamond burs; finishing with 1112 FF diamond burs associated to Enhance/Pogo; finishing with 1112 FF diamond burs associated to Enhance/Pogo/Polishing/Poli I and II pastes/Fotogloss. After initial readouts of surface roughness, the specimens were subjected to mechanical cycling (1.200.000 cycles) and immediately subjected to final roughness readouts.  Surface roughness means was statistically analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer test (α=0.05). SEM images were realized after finishing/polishing and after mechanical cycling. The P90 composite showed surface roughness values similar to other investigated composites. However, significant difference was observed in finishing/polishing techniques. The diamond burs group showed the highest surface roughness differing from the other composite resins (α < 0.05). Enance/Pogo showed the lowest results, which presented no difference compared to the polishing paste group (α > 0.05). The low-shrink posterior restorative showed similar surface roughness when compared to dimethacrylate composite resins and suitable to posterior restorations. Keywords: Tooth. Silorane Resins. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of bleaching protocols on the surface roughness (Ra), color change and surface micromorphology of a low-viscosity bulk-fill composite (Filtek Bulk Fill Flow, 3M ESPE), a highviscosity bulk-fill composite (Filtek Bulk Fill, 3M ESPE) and a conventional nanoparticulate composite resin (control) (Filtek Z350 XT, 3M ESPE). Forty samples of each composite (disks 5 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick) were randomly divided into four groups (n=10), according to bleaching protocol: a) 10% carbamide peroxide gel (Opalescence, Ultradent Products) (2 h/ day, for 14 days); b) 40% hydrogen peroxide gel (Opalescence Boost, Ultradent Products) (three bleaching sessions, once a week, 45 min/session); c) whitening rinse (Listerine Whitening Extreme, Johnson & Johnson) (2 min/day, for 14 days); and d) distilled water (control). The samples were submitted to triplicate readings (Ra and color [CIELAB parameters]) before and after contact with bleaching protocols. Micromorphology was analyzed in a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Ra and color parameters (ΔL, Δa, Δb and ΔE) were analyzed by generalized linear models (α=0.05). The Ra of the high-viscosity bulk-fill was significantly higher than that of the other composites (p<0.05). Ra increased significantly (p<0.05) and surface became more irregular (SEM analysis) in all the composite resins, regardless of the bleaching protocol (p<0.05). The high-viscosity bulk-fill composite resin group had significantly lower ΔE (p<0.05) than the nanoparticulate composite resin group immersed in distilled water. It was concluded that the characteristics of each resin significantly influenced the Ra more than the bleaching protocol. The high-viscosity bulk-fill resin presented minor color change.

To evaluate the action of photoinitiators on the microtensile resistance of adhesive systems and resins composed in bovine enamel. Forty dental fragments, with flat and smooth enamel surfaces, obtained from the coronary buccal face of healthy bovine incisors, were randomly assigned to 4 experimental groups (n = 10) according to the different adhesive systems and composite resins used: Group 1- Ambar APS + Vittra APS; Group 2- Ambar APS + Opallis; Group 3- Ambar + Vittra APS; Group 4- Ambar + Opallis. After composite restoration, the samples were sectioned to obtain toothpicks that were subjected to the microtensile test (1.0 mm/min). The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis. The Kruskal-Wallis test revealed no significant differences between groups (p <0.05). Values ​​in MPa were: G1- 18.58 MPaa; G2 - 19.83 MPaa; G3- 19.87 MPaa; G4- 20.99 MPaa. The result of the Mann-Whitney test showed no significant differences due to the adhesive (Ambar Universal- 19.58 MPaa, Ambar APS Universal- 19.87 MPaa) and the composite resin used (Vittra APS- 19.52 MPAa, Opallis - 20.56 MPAa). The use of different photoinitiators in the composition of adhesive systems and restorative composites did not influence their adhesive resistance values ​​due to the standardization of the factors that influence their cure pattern.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different finishing and polishing systems and of composite resins structure on surface state of the restoration. Cylindrical samples from two different composite resins (Filtek Z 550 and Filtek Z 250, 3M ESPE) were obtained. In group 1 the samples were not finished and polished. In groups 2-4 the samples were submitted to finishing procedure using two tungsten carbide burs, then polished using three different polishing systems: three steps diamond abrasive polishers (Kenda CGI, Lichtenstein) - group 2, one step silicon carbide abrasive particles brush (Occlubrush, KerrHawe SA, Switzerland) - group 3 and two steps Sof-Lex spiral wheels (3M ESPE) - group 4. Half of the samples in each group were subjected to surface microstructure evaluation using a scanning electron mycroscope. The other half of the samples was subjected to surface state assessment using profilometery. All the investigated finishing and polishing systems leaded to increased surface roughness when compared to the roughness of composite resins placed in direct contact to celluloid clear matrix. The surface roughness of both microfilled-hybrid and nanofilled-hybrid composite resins finished and polished with different systems were influenced mostly by the polishing system and less by the composite resin structure.
