A wheel chair is a mechanically operated device that allows the user to move about independently. This minimizes the user's personal effort and force required to move the wheelchair wheels. Furthermore, it allows visually or physically handicapped people to go from one location to another. Voice commands and button controls can be used to operate wheelchairs. In recent years, there has been a lot of interest in smart wheelchairs. These gadgets are very handy while traveling from one location to another. The devices can also be utilized in nursing homes where the elderly have difficulties moving about. For individuals who have lost their mobility, the gadgets are a godsend. Different types of smart wheelchairs have been created in the past, but new generations of wheelchairs are being developed and utilized that incorporate the use of artificial intelligence and therefore leave the user with a little to tamper with. The project also intends to develop a comparable wheel chair that has some intelligence and so assists the user in his or her mobility.

As the usage of the Android smart phones has been considerably increasing, a lot of applications have been developed for the benefits of mobile users. In the past, many applications have been designed aiming to help physically disabled persons. This paper presents an android application which providers several options for controlling the movement of wheelchairs effectively. The proposed application enables People with Disabilities (PWDs) to operate the wheel chair with minimum effort. Apart from voice commands, the proposed application detects and measures the tilt change, and moves the wheelchair based on the degree of the tilt. It also provides a soft joystick as in mobile games to ease the operation of the wheelchairs. Furthermore, sensors that are fixed in the wheelchair can detect and avoid obstacles when the chair is on the move. Hence, it ensures the safety while using the wheelchairs. The proposed application will help both physically challenged persons and elders to operate the wheelchairs more comfortably.

Falls have been one of the main threats to people’s health, especially for the elderly. Detecting falls in time can prevent the long lying time, which is extremely fatal. This paper intends to show the efficacy of detecting falls using a wearable accelerometer. In the past decade, the fall detection problem has been extensively studied. However, since the hardware resources of wearable devices are limited, designing highly accurate embeddable models with feasible computational cost remains an open research problem. In this paper, different types of shallow and lightweight neural networks, including supervised and unsupervised models are explored to improve the fall detection results. Experiment results on a large open dataset show that the lightweight neural networks proposed have obtained much better results than machine learning methods used in previous work. Moreover, the storage and computation requirements of these lightweight models are only a few hundredths of deep neural networks in literature. In tested lightweight neural networks, the best one is proved to be the supervised convolutional neural network (CNN) that can achieve an accuracy beyond 99.9% with only 441 parameters. Its storage and computation requirements are only 1.2 KB and 0.008 MFLOPs, which make it more suitable to be implemented in wearable devices with restricted memory size and computation power.


The main objective of this project is to develop a Home automation system using an Arduino board with Bluetooth being remotely controlled by any android OS smart phone. As technology is advancing so houses are also getting smarter. Modern houses are gradually shifting from conventional switches to centralized control system, Involving remote control switches. Presently, conventional wall switches located in different parts of the houses makes it difficult for the user to go near them to operate. Even more it becomes more difficult for the elderly or physically handicapped people to do so. Remote controlled home automation system provides a most modern solution with smart phone. In order to achieve this, Bluetooth module is interfaced to Arduino board at the receiver end while on the transmitter end, a GUI application on the cell phone sends ON/OFF, commands receiver where loads are connected. By touching the specified location on the GUI a prompt will appear which will seek a command. Thus switching ON/OFF the connected loads.


In this paper a survey of autonomous wheelchair has been proposed for physically handicapped people, which serves their crucial role for maneuvering by simply moving their neck. To fulfill this objective, this paper involves Arduino board programmed for processing & controlling the wheelchair. Micro switches are used here to sense the neck movements from the disabled person and which further send this to Arduino for taking necessary action to move the wheelchair accordingly. GPS module is integrated with the Arduino to locate the physically disabled person in case of emergencies. In addition to this, GSM module is been used for sending crucial information regarding the physically disabled person’s health issues if any, like body temperature, to further send this to his/her contact person/assigned care-taker. In some special case of physically challenged person who is not able to move any of his/her body part except fingers, this paper gives the better perspective to make a movement of the wheelchair by simply controlling it by virtue of an android app installed on the wheelchair. An android app is developed to serve as inputs for processing and controlling the DC motors for the desired maneuverings.

Various types of intermediate-sized (10-nm) filaments have been found and described in many different cell types during the past few years. Despite the differences in the chemical composition among the different types of filaments, they all yield common structural features: they are usually up to several microns long and have a diameter of 7 to 10 nm; there is evidence that they are made of several 2 to 3.5 nm wide protofilaments which are helically wound around each other; the secondary structure of the polypeptides constituting the filaments is rich in ∞-helix. However a detailed description of their structural organization is lacking to date.

Introduction: The prevalence of obesity has been rising, adding to morbidity and mortality. As the proportion of elderly aged 60 years and above grows, so too the prevalence of obesity among this population. Obesity in the elderly is a rapidly growing public health concern as it contributes to significant changes in the health of older people. Objective: This review aims to assess the contributory factors for obesity in the elderly over the past decade. Methods: A literature search was conducted. The search was restricted to articles written in the English language published from 2008 to 2018. Qualitative studies were excluded. Results: A total of 19 full articles were retrieved, of which 18 cross-sectional and one cohort were included. The contributory factors were divided into three components: (a) socio demographic characteristics, (b) medical history and dietary factors and (c) environmental factors. Conclusions: This review informs an emerging knowledge regarding contributory factors for obesity and has implications for future education and program intervention in fighting obesity in the elderly.

Chapter 2 asks the critical question of whether healthcare is different from other consumer-driven markets. In the past, many pushed back on the notion that healthcare could be a consumer-driven industry, arguing that it is fundamentally different from other markets. This chapter acknowledges and reviews these critiques, highlighting four areas that might present challenges to increasing consumer choice in healthcare: the special relationship between doctor and patient, ethics and morality, individual choice versus collective benefit, and the health consequences of consumer choice. In doing so, this chapter also presents a schematic for thinking about the different types of healthcare choices, arguing that not all choices are equal and consumers may be more prepared to make decisions in some areas as opposed to others. In presenting the counterargument to consumer choice, this chapter asks the reader to consider the drawbacks and potential limitations of consumer choice in healthcare.

The principal reported causes of death have changed dramatically since the 1860s, though changes in categorization of causes and improved diagnosis make it difficult to be precise about timings. Diseases particularly affecting children such as measles and whooping cough largely disappeared as killers by the 1950s. Deaths particularly linked to unclean environments and poor sanitary infrastructure also declined, though some can kill babies and the elderly even today. Pulmonary tuberculosis and bronchitis were eventually largely controlled. Reported cancer, stroke, and heart disease mortality showed upward trends well into the second half of the twentieth century, though some of this was linked to diagnostic improvement. Both fell in the last decades of our period, but Scotland still had among the highest rates in Western Europe. Deaths from accidents and drowning saw significant falls since World War Two but, especially in the past 25 years, suicide, and alcohol and drug-related deaths rose.
