This paper aims to find out the discourse of tolerance among religious people featured in the film “?” (Tanda Tanya) and Ayat-Ayat Cinta 2. Both are viewed from the level of the text, the level of social cognition, and the level of social context. The research method used is qualitative analysis with Teun van Dijk's theoretical approach, namely data analysis at the level of text, social cognition and social context. The results showed that; First, the discourse of tolerance at the text level in the film “?” (Tanda Tanya) is related to various themes, both about harmony among religious communities, cultural diversity and about tolerance. Likewise the film Ayat-Ayat Cinta 2 also tells the story of religious life in European countries. Second, the discourse of tolerance between religious communities is seen from the level of social cognition. In the film “?” (Tanda Tanya), both the screenwriter and director want to explain the reality of the diversity of religions, cultures and customs that exist in Indonesia. He wants to explain the relationship between religious people in a vulgar way. In contrast to the more refined Ayat-Ayat Cinta 2 movie. Third, the discourse of tolerance between religious communities in terms of the level of social context. The film “?” (Tanda Tanya) is motivated by the number of bombings that occurred at the house of worship three or four years before. At the level of the social context of this film as a sequel to the previous Ayat-Ayat Cinta movie. The background of making this film is because it wants to illustrate that Islam can be used as a way of life wherever we live, including life in the West though.

Many studies have established that religious people display higher levels of prejudice. The review of the literature suggests, however, that in order to understand the relationship between religion and prejudice, it is important to consider the target of prejudice as well as the multifaceted nature of religion. Regarding the target of prejudice, some prejudices may be condemned in religious communities, whereas others may be perceived to be promoted by religious communities. Religion as a multifaceted construct encompasses social, moral, cognitive, and emotional aspects. In its relations with prejudice, the social and cognitive dimension are particularly relevant, as these dimensions determine who is considered to be an in-group member and what constitutes a threat to the own religious worldview. Furthermore, it has also been shown that the exposure to religious concepts influences prejudicial reactions. Finally, a review of the studies conducted outside the context of white Christians in North America and Europe shows that, regardless of social context and religious denomination, prejudice can to a large extent be explained by perceptions of threat, for example, to one’s belief system, which may especially be important for religious people.

Music is one of the communication media to convey implied messages. Music is also a cultural means that is present in society as a construction of social reality as outlined in the form of song lyrics. The most prominent social music functions are found in the lyrics. An ideal song lyrics do not only contain ideas to entertain but also have moral or idealistic messages and have the power of constructive social criticism. One of the musicians who dared to create songs about social problems was the band Shaggydog who released a song titled Putra Nusantara. The purpose of this study was to determine the meaning of social criticism on the song Putra Nusantara using the Teun A. Van Djik approach covering the dimensions of the text, dimensions of social cognition and dimensions of social context. The text dimension will analyze the macro structure, superstructure and micro structure, then discuss it into the dimensions of social cognition and social context dimensions to find the meaning of criticism of the song. After analyzing the micro structure, which is based on syntactic, semantic, stylistic and rhetorical structures, it turns out that there are many clauses that are incoherent with one another or based on the superstructure, in the temple scheme many meanings are even lost. However, based on the overall meaning, the song implies to state officials who do not pay attention to proper education for children. However, based on social cognition, the song cannot be proven true if the school is expensive. Macro structure can be seen from the relationship of the text with what is in the minds of listeners. Then, in the social context, there are a lot of satirical expressions that can be known meaning based on the social context.

Media bias will always be an interesting topic to be examined. Media plays some important roles in society. One of its roles is building public opinions. Our own prior research has demonstrated that respect for disapproved others predicts and might foster tolerance toward them. This means that without giving up their disapproval of others’ way of life, people can tolerate others when they respect them as equals (outgroup respect–tolerance hypothesis). Still, there was considerable variation in the study features. Moreover, the studies are part of a larger research project that affords many additional tests of our hypothesis. To achieve integration along with a more robust understanding of the relation between respect and tolerance, we (re)analyzed all existing data from this project, and we synthesized the results with the help of meta-analytic techniques. The average standardized regression coefficient, which describes the relationship between respect and tolerance, was 0.25 (95% confidence interval [CI] = [0.16, 0.34]). In addition to this overall confirmation of our hypothesis, the size of this coefficient varied with a number of variables. It was larger for numerical majorities than for minorities, smaller for high-status than for low-status groups, and larger for religious than for life-style groups. These findings should inspire further theory development and spur growth in the social-psychological literature on tolerance.

In this text, we ask about the relationship between sexual education in Poland in the 1960s and 1970s with the cultural contestation and the moral (including sexual) revolution in the West as seen through the eyes of Prof. Andrzej Jaczewski (1929–2020) – educationalist, who for many years in 1970s and 1980s conducted seminars at the University of Cologne, pediatrician, sexologist, one of the pioneers of sexual education in Poland. The movie “Sztuka kochania. Historia Michaliny Wisłockiej” (“The Art of Love. The Story of Michalina Wisłocka” [1921–2005]), directed in 2017 by Maria Sadowska, was the impulse for our interview. After watching it, we discovered that the counter-cultural background of the West in the 1960s and 1970s was completely absent both in the aforementioned film and in the discourse of Polish sex education at that time. Moreover, Andrzej Jaczewski’s statement (July 2020) indicates that the Polish concept of sexual education in the 1960s and 1970s did not arise under the influence of the social and moral revolution in the West at the same time, and its originality lay in the fact that it was dealt with by professional doctors-specialists. We put Andrzej Jaczewski’s voice in the spotlight. Our voice is usually muted in this text, it is more of an auxiliary function (Chase, 2009). Each of the readers may impose their own interpretative filter on the story presented here.

The birth of the Sirajuththalibin book was motivated by the emergence of malaise in the Javanese intellectual tradition, which had recently been penetrated by all forms of Western elements, so that what was said to be a treasure trove of Javanese knowledge or kejawen, was considered to be contrary to Islamic teachings. Sirajuththalibin is a book that contains Sufism teachings. This is the book of explanation from Imam Ghazali's Minhajul Abidin. The author will try to explore the background of the writing of this book, which is lifted from the intellectual inclination of Kyai Ihsan Jampes. This article will discuss the content of Sirajuththalibin and the background for the birth of this text. The research method used is by reading critically from the Sirajuththalibin book. The author not only explains a little about the contents of this book, but also links it to the social context of the local community, so that a strong social nuance is seen from the Sufi explanations constructed by Kyai Ihsan.

Language is an essential feature of communication for all poeple. It is utilized through various tools and media, and singing songs is one of the traditional forms of communication. Songs are usually written for particular reasons, messages, and purposes, and sometimes targeted for specific audience or listeners. Song lyrics usually contain various themes such as social and current issues and problems which the songwriter strives to share through expressions of his or her ideology, thoughts and feelings. This paper is aimed to find out the text analysis, social cognition and social context in the humanity song entitled We Shall Overcome through Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis model. This model shows that the choice of words or the diction is cohesive and coherent and is able to communicate the general meaning of this humanity song. Furthermore, the social cognition in this humanity song is related with the current social context which involves the recent situation in Palestinine, where there is still in conflict with Israel.

To our daughter Immena whom we give to God and to be clothed as a nun (sanctimonialis)… for the fear of God, and so that souls fighting for Christ can receive a remedy for their sins through our intermission …’. An aristocratic couple decide to give two of their children (a boy, as well as this girl) to the religious life, and their intention is recorded in a private charter. Lands which have been set aside for the economic support of Immena and her brother are listed at length; then the document concludes with the statement that the two donors, Count Rodulf and Aiga, his wife, ‘requested this concession to be made in the month of November in the tenth year of the reign of our most serene lord Louis, Emperor Augustus’ (that is, the Emperor Louis the Pious, AD 823). A girl is being given to God. Her entry into this new way of life is solemnized by a ceremony in which she will be dressed in clothes appropriate for her withdrawal from the ‘profane’ world: she will almost certainly be veiled in black or purple—although at this time that was a matter for debate in ecclesiastical legislation. The charter may also be interpreted as recording a ‘rite of passage’ which seems to signal Immena’s ‘aggregation’ into a new sacred community, and her separation from the social world of her kin.

Sociological research on the US population’s views of science and religion has recently burgeoned, but focuses primarily on Christian fundamentalists and evangelicals. Our study advances understandings of how Americans of non-Christian faiths – namely Judaism and Islam – perceive the relationship between science and religion. We draw on in-depth interviews (N=92) conducted in Orthodox Jewish, Reform Jewish, and Sunni Muslim congregations in two major cities to elucidate how respondents’ respective traditions help them frame the relationship between science and religion. Findings demonstrate that members of these religious communities distance themselves from the pervasive conflict narrative. They rely on religious texts and historical traditions to instead articulate relationships of compatibility and independence between science and religion, while developing strategies to negotiate conflict around delimited issues. Findings push the social scientific study of religion and science beyond a specifically Christian and conflict-oriented focus.
