This research was aimed to develop suitable English reading materials for the eleventh grade students of Maritime Department of SMK Pelayaran Samudera Indonesia. Due to the result of this research was in the form of a product, this research was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) which adapted Borg and Gall (2003) theory with some modifications. The subjects of this research were the eleventh grade students of Maritime Department of SMK Pelayaran Samudera Indonesia. In conducting this research, the procedures were gathering the data and information, conducting the need analysis, designing the first draft of materials, validating by the expert, revising the materials, and producing the final product. The instruments of collecting the data were the combination of two strategies; interview and questionnaires. The interview was analyzed as qualitative data and the questionnaires were analyzed as quantitative data. These data were the needs of students which covered target needs and learning needs. This research only focused on developing two genres of English reading materials based on KTSP that were taught in the second semester which were procedure and analytical exposition. Keywords: English Reading Materials, English for Specific Purposes, Research & Development (R & D), Maritime Department.

This research aimed to develop appropriate English reading materials for grade eleventh students in SMK Farmasi-YPFSU Medan. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design by adapting Borg and Gall’s research theory (2003) through six steps, such as: (1) Gathering data and information, (2) Analyzing data, (3) Designing new materials, (4) Validating new materials by experts, (5) Revising, and (6) Final product. The data of this research were the existing reading materials and the results of need analysis. The sources of the data were the textbook, students and teacher. The class consisted of 30 grade eleventh students. The instruments for collecting the data were questionnaire, interview, and documents. The questionnaire was analyzed as quantitative data and the interview result was analyzed as qualitative data. The questionnaire and interview was done to get the students’ need. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which cointain English for pharmacy program. Thus, developing English reading materials were procedure text. The developed procedure texts were related to the pharmacy program. The products have been validated by experts. The average scores are 4,03 from English Lecturer and 4,57 from English Teacher. It means the developing reading materials categorized as appropriate or relevant for the grade eleventh students in SMK Farmasi-YPFSU Medan.

Due to the result in the form of a product, this study was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) study which adapted from Borg and Gall (1989) theory with some modifications. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of Information Technology Program of SMK Gajah Mada Medan. In conducting this research, the procedures were gathering the data and information, conducting the need analysis, designing the first draft of materials, validating by the experts, revising the materials, and producing the final product. The instruments of collecting data were the combination of two strategies; interview and questionnaires. The interview result was analyzed as qualitative data and the questionnaires analyzed as quantitative data. These data were needs of students covering target needs and learning needs. This study developed reading materials which only focused on procedure text taught in the even semester. These materials were based on Curriculum 2013.

Due to the result in the form of product, this study was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) study which adapted from Borg and Gall (1989) theory with some modifications. The subject of this study was the seventh grade students of MTsS UMMI Lubuk Pakam. In conducting this research, the procedures were gathering the data and information, conducting the need analysis, designing the first draft of media, revising the media, and producing the final product as the meme comic. The instruments of collecting data were the combination of two strategies; interview and questionnaires. The interview result was analyzed as qualitative data and the questionnaires analyzed as quantitative data. These data were needs of students covering target needs and learning needs. This study developed speaking media which only focused on descriptive text taught in the odd semester. This study dealt with the development of English Reading Materials of Senior High School in SMAN 10 Medan. The objectives of this study is to develop the English reading materials for students of SMAN 10 Medan which represent the characteristics of their sociocultural environment. The research was conducted at SMAN 10 Medan. The research procedures of this study were Research and Development (R & D) that were done through three phases: 1) evaluation and need analysis, 2) materials design, and 3) materials Validation. The instruments used in this research were a documentary sheet, questionnaire sheet, and interview sheet. The data from evaluation and need analysis were analyzed by using descriptive technique and the data from expert judgment results were analyzed using quantitative data analysis. The result of this study was a coursebook of local content-based reading materials which consist of 3 genres: recount genres, descriptive genres, and narrative genres, in which each genre consists of 2 texts complete with the tasks or exercises. Based on the experts� judgment results, the score was 87.06 which belonged to good category based on Dirgeyasa (2011), since the range is (70-89).

English is a compulsory subject that must be studied by all students, including students of Islamic Banking. Various efforts have been made by the lecturers so that the learning of English is interesting and attractive to students, including designing learning for the specific purposes (English for Specific Purposes). However, students are still having difficulties and have not had a good output after learning it. In addition, the material provided seemed unattractive to students. It was because of the material provided is not based on students’ needs. This research is a descriptive research by using a qualitative approach to see students' needs for English.The data was taken in the form of qualitative data, the utterances from interviews with respondents. In addition, quantitative data was taken from questionnaires distributed to Islamic Banking students related to the needs analysis of the English syllabus. The questionnaire consisted of learning need which was divided into input, procedure, setting, teacher's role, and learners' role. From the results of the research, it was found that students have their own learning needs for the material taught to them. Their learning needs must be realized in the learning plan in order to the goals of English can be achieved well. Keywords: Learning Need, Need Analysis, ESP

ABSTRACTThe objective of this research was to reveal the introvert learner’s necessities, lacks, wants and learning needs in English speaking activity. This research was conducted at three state Islamic junior high schools in South Jakarta in order to solve the introvert learners’ problems deals with self-confidence and social interaction in English speaking activity. It was presented in a mixed-method research and used the explanatory sequential strategy. The participants in this research were 106 introvert learners on the eighth grade for quantitative data meanwhile nine introvert learners and four English teachers for qualitative data. The data of the study were collected through questionnaire and interview. The quantitative data were analysed using simple descriptive statistic while the qualitative data were analysed using Creswell’s theory. The study showed that introvert learners learn English speaking skill in order to communicate properly in English and facilitate their learning in other skills. Since the difficult learning material and the lack of vocabulary were the main obstacles for introvert learners, the English teacher can give them keywords and examples, then teach based on their interest in speaking activity to support the learning process. In this regard, the introvert learners like to discuss dialogues and experience topics by pairs, watching English movies, and listening to English songs. By identifying the necessities, lacks, wants, and learning needs, the teacher can facilitate the learning process through a friendly atmosphere.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan tujuan, kekurangan, minat, dan kebutuhan belajar siswa introvert dalam aktivitas berbahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini dilasanakan di tiga MTs Negeri di Jakarta Selatan dengan tujuan untuk menyelesaikan masalah siswa introvert terkait kepercayaan diri dan interaksi sosial dalam kegiatan berbahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini disajikan dalam penelitian metode campuran dan menggunakan strategi sekuensial penjelasan. Peserta dari penelitian ini adalah 106 siswa introvert di kelas delapan untuk data kuantitatif dan sembilan perwakilan siswa introvert dan empat guru bahasa Inggris untuk data kualitatif. Data penelitian dikumpulkan melalui angket dan wawancara. Data kuantitatif dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif sederhana sedangkan data kualitatif dianalisis menggunakan teori Creswell. Studi ini mengungkapkan bahwa siswa introvert mempelajari keterampilan berbahasa Inggris untuk berkomunikasi dengan baik dalam bahasa Inggris dan memfasilitasi pembelajaran mereka di kemampuan lainnya. Karena materi pembelajaran yang sulit dan kurangnya kosa kata adalah hambatan utama bagi siswa introvert, guru bahasa Inggris dapat memberi mereka kata kunci dan contoh, kemudian mengajar berdasarkan minat mereka dalam kegiatan berbicara untuk mendukung proses pembelajaran. Dalam hal ini, siswa introvert suka mendiskusikan dialog dan topik pengalaman secara berpasangan, menonton film berbahasa Inggris, dan mendengarkan lagu-lagu bahasa Inggris. This study dealt with the development of English Reading Materials of vocational school, Al-WashliyahTeladan Medan, majoring Software Engineering. The objectives of this study were to: 1) find out language skill and materials are needed by the students of Software Engineering, 2) develop the English materials for the majoring in software engineering students at the vocational high school grade XII. This study was conducted by Educational Research and Development R&D (Borg & Gall, 1989). The data of this research were from existing documents and the result of interview with teacher and student. The results of the research conveyed that the existing reading materials were mostly irrelevant because the title and content of the material was not appropriate and was not required for the students majoring in software engineering. The new English reading materials and syllabus were developed based on the students need related to the workplace. The materials and syllabus were developed from the existing materials from teacher. The developing materials were validated by two experts.

This research  is aimed to find out the target and learning needs of Nautical students at PIP Semarang and designing the appropriate material for Nautical students at PIP Semarang. This is a Research and Development project. The steps of doing this research are (1) need analysis (2) make syllabus (3) designing materials (4) expert consultation (5) try out material (6) evaluation. The subject of this research is the third-semester students of Nautical department at PIP Semarang. The instruments used are questionnaires for need analysis, interview guide and observation sheets. The data were analyzed by using descriptive quantitative and qualitative. The results of the research recommend three  units namely (1) Initial Call (2) Message Marker and (3) On Board Communication Phrases which are developed with communicative approach. The research gives contribution to the teaching and learning English at Nautical Department of Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran Semarang.

Indonesia has so much cultural diversity. Culture is Indonesia’s national identity. Every culture cannot be separated from the cultural values of society in ancient times. This study intends to look at the development of picture book learning media with the theme of Acehnese culture to stimulate children to get to know the local culture. This study is commonly referred to as Research and Development (R&D). The type of data in this research and development consists of two types of data, qualitative data, and quantitative data. Researchers took qualitative data by conducting observation, interviews, and documentation for the quantitative data obtained from research respondents, including material experts, media experts, cultural experts, and users of learning media. The results of this study are: (1) The development of picture book media is designed using Corel Draw to design layouts, depict illustrations, smoothing using snape, printing and giving to content/material experts, media experts, and cultural experts to determine the feasibility of the designed media. (2) The results from the content experts get a percentage of 100%, media experts get a percentage of 96%, cultural experts get a percentage of 96%, small-scale trials are 3.9%, and large-scale trials are 4.6%. Finally, this research contributes to in-depth knowledge that picture book learning media with the theme of Acehnese culture can stimulate children to get to know the local culture.

This study aims to develop English reading materials needed by students of Vocational School and develop English reading materials for students of Audio Video Program based on Contextual Teaching and Learning. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six phases; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing new materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. It was conducted in SMK N 1 PercutSei Tuan, especially grade X. The data were gathered by administering interview and distributing questionnaire to 23 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students need English reading materials which contain English for Audio Video program.The average scores are the first from English lecturer and the second from English teacher. It means that the developing materials categorized as suitable or approriate for grade X of Audio Video program. Key words: Research and Development (R & D), reading materials, Audio Video Program.
