The rapid development of the city causes an increase in the amount of water that needed to support various activities. The Utilization of groundwater in large quantities causes negative impacts such as the decrease in groundwater level so that people are difficult to access groundwater. The aim of this study is to analyze the index of groundwater use which describe the condition of groundwater use in the city of Yogyakarta. The groundwater use index is calculated by dividing the total water demand and the availability of groundwater in the City of Yogyakarta. The result shows that in general groundwater use in the city of Yogyakarta is categorized in the safe enough classification (III). However, in the shallow groundwater use index there is one area with less safe classification (II) namely Kotagede District, and one area with unsafe classification (I) namely Umbulharjo District. The main factor which influence to the high index of shallow groundwater use is large population that causes high water domestic needs. This is reflected in the percentage of water domestic needs reaching 90.43%.Keywords: Groundwater, Index of Groundwater Use, Yogyakarta City Perkembangan kota yang pesat menyebabkan semakin banyak jumlah air yang dibutuhkan untuk menunjang berbagai kegiatan di dalamnya. Pemanfaatan airtanah dalam jumlah yang besar menyebabkan dampak negatif seperti penurunan muka airtanah, sehingga masyarakat sulit untuk mengakses airtanah tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis indeks pemakaian airtanah yang diharapkan dapat menggambarkan kondisi penggunaan airtanah di Kota Yogyakarta. Indeks pemakaian airtanah dihitung dengan membagi total kebutuhan air dengan ketersediaan airtanah di Kota Yogyakarta. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa secara umum pemakaian airtanah di Kota Yogyakarta masuk dalam  klasifikasi cukup aman (III). Namun demikian pada indeks pemakaian airtanah dangkal terdapat satu wilayah dengan klasifikasi kurang aman yakni Kecamatan Kotagede, dan satu wilayah dengan klasifikasi tidak aman, yakni Kecamatan Umbulharjo. Faktor utama yang berpengaruh tingginya indeks pemakaian airtanah dangkal adalah jumlah penduduk yang sangat besar yang menyebabkan kebutuhan air domestik yang sangat tinggi. Abstract Activated sludge biocenoses were compared on waste-water treatment plants in the city of Kazan, Russian Federation and the city of Teplice, Czech Republic. Based on Palia-Kovnatski index, Acanthamoeba in Kazan, Epistylis in Teplice, and Acanthamoeba and Centropyxis were dominant genera in both plants. The major subdominant generas identified were Arcella, Opercularia and Aspidisca. This indicates high nitrification ability, high water purification potential and matured activated sludge. Chemical composition of the waste-water was identified as the main factor determining the sludge biocenoses diversity. Higher sludge biodiversity (Shannon, Margalef, and Sorensen indexes) was found in Kazan corresponding to more concentrated inflow water.

In the last two decades, urbanization has transformed Yogyakarta City expanding beyond its administrative area with about one million inhabitants. The City sited on shallow unconfined aquifer has rapidly changed without appropriate access to sanitation and piped water supply. Until now, only 9% of the urban population is served by sewers system and less than 30% of urban population have access to clean water which supplied by the local public water-work. Most of the urban population depend on shallow groundwater for much of their water supply. Regards to the massive used of on-site sanitation systems in the city, contamination of nitrate in shallow groundwater is predicted to occur and surveys of domestic dug wells have revealed a widespread nitrate contamination of the groundwater. Comparison of groundwater nitrate and chloride concentration from several old data and the latest data shows clearly an evidence of the increasing of nitrate concentration and nitrate leaching in the shallow groundwater under Yogyakarta City overtime. Considering the trend, it is no doubt that most of nitrate concentration under urbanized area in the Yogyakarta City will be greater than 50 mg/L in the next several years, if appropriate management action to deal with the on-site sanitation system is not conducted.

The Yogyakarta-Sleman Groundwater Basin has an important role in providing water resources for people of Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta City, and Bantul Regency. If it is not managed properly, excessive groundwater utilization can reduce the quality and quantity of groundwater. This study aims to determine the level of groundwater utilization in the Yogyakarta-Sleman Groundwater Basin. The method used is the calculation of dynamic groundwater and water utilization according to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) number 19-6728.1-2002. The results showed that the trend of total groundwater utilization from 2013 to 2018 has increased in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta City, and Bantul Regency. However, when viewed from the level of groundwater utilization, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta City, and Bantul Regency are dominated by low utilization rates, while the very high utilization rates in Sleman Regency are in Godean and Gamping Districts. The utilization rate is very high in the city of Yogyakarta, located in Umbulharjo District. While the level of utilization is very high in Bantul Regency, in Imogiri District. Thus it can be concluded that the level of groundwater utilization in the Yogyakarta-Sleman Groundwater Basin area is quite diverse, dominated by the low category but there are several sub-districts in the very high category, so that the groundwater utilization zone in CAT Yogyakarta-Sleman still needs control, so that it can be sustainable and utilized in the long term. The rapid development of information and technology, the city of Bandung tourism has also increased. However, tourists who visit the city of Bandung have problems with a limited time when visiting Bandung tourist attractions. Traffic congestion, distance, and the number of tourist destinations are the problems for tourists travel. The optimal route selection is the solution for those problems. Congestion and distance data are processed using the Simple Additive Weighting (SAW) method. Route selection uses the Floyd-Warshall Algorithm. In this study, the selection of the best route gets the smallest weight with a value of 5.127 from the Algorithm process. Based on testing, from two to five tourist attractions get an average calculation time of 3 to 5 seconds. This application is expected to provide optimal solutions for tourists in the selection of tourist travel routes.

Dubrovnik is the most popular tourist seaside resort in Yugoslavia. The rapid development of tourism has necessitated appropriate environmental protection, particularly with regard to the coastal sea. Consequently, the city has constructed a plant for the treatment of wastewater and a submarine outfall. The characteristics of the sewerage system and the coastal sea meant that the wastewater disposal system required a specific method of construction and treatment. This paper presents the system adopted for Dubrovnik and the methodology used to choose the system. Special attention is paid to the problems and drawbacks which occurred during design and operation of the system, as well as to the measures undertaken afterwards for reconstruction of the system.

Since 1980s, accelerated by urbanization, Yogyakarta City was shifting to many directions defined by main road networks and service centres. Urbanization has transformed rural dwellings to become urban settlements and generated urban agglomeration area. Until now, new business centres, education centres and tourism centres are growing hand in hand with new settlements (formal or informal) without proper provision of water supply and sanitation system. This condition increase the possibility of groundwater contamination from urban wastewater and a change of major chemistry of groundwater as shallow unconfined aquifer is lying under Yogyakarta City. To prove the evolution of groundwater chemistry, old data taken on 1980s were comparing with the recent groundwater chemistry data. The evaluation shows that nitrate content of groundwater in 1980s was a minor anion, but nowadays become a major anion, especially in the shallow groundwater in the centre of Yogyakarta City. This evidence shows that there is an evolution of groundwater chemistry in shallow groundwater below Yogyakarta City due to contamination from un-proper on-site sanitation system. Several cities in developing countries are challenging the permanent process of urbanization. This generates a great disturbance on the hydrological response of the urbanized area during rainfall events, which can cause floods. Among the disturbances that urbanized basins may suffer, it is found that variations in rain losses (hydrological abstractions) can be estimated by the named volumetric runoff coefficient (CVOL) methodology. In the present study, this methodology is used in an attempt to estimate the hydrological abstraction of two nearby urbanized basins, with different degrees of impermeability, located in the city of Cuenca in Ecuador. The data for that analysis were collected between April and May of 2017. The results obtained indicate that the micro-basin with the largest impervious area presents the higher initial hydrological losses, the higher rate of decrease in abstractions, and the higher stormwater runoff flows per unit area. In addition, the abstractions found in the two urban micro-basins show great sensitivity to the maximum rainfall intensity and do not relate to the antecedent soil moisture. These results demonstrate the importance of having higher pervious surfaces in urbanized areas because they lead to reduce negative impacts associated with increased stormwater runoff on impervious surfaces.

Urban vibrancy contributes towards a successful city and high-quality life for people as one of its vital elements. Therefore, the association between service facilities and vibrancy is crucial for urban managers to understand and improve city construction. Moreover, the rapid development of information and communications technology (ICT) allows researchers to easily and quickly collect a large volume of real-time data generated by people in daily life. In this study, against the background of emerging multi-source big data, we utilized Tencent location data as a proxy for 24-h vibrancy and adopted point-of-interest (POI) data to represent service facilities. An analysis framework integrated with ordinary least squares (OLS) and geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) models is proposed to explore the spatiotemporal relationships between urban vibrancy and POI-based variables. Empirical results show that (1) spatiotemporal variations exist in the impact of service facilities on urban vibrancy across Guangzhou, China; and (2) GTWR models exhibit a higher degree of explanatory capacity on vibrancy than the OLS models. In addition, our results can assist urban planners to understand spatiotemporal patterns of urban vibrancy in a refined resolution, and to optimize the resource allocation and functional configuration of the city.

In this study, we present a transparent and reproducible approach to model agricultural production with respect to environmental characteristics and available labour. Our research focuses on the city of Pergamon and its surroundings, with an emphasis on the transition between the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial Period, where widespread demographic changes took place. We investigated the degree of local self-sufficiency using different concepts of a city’s complementary region. Using simple topographic derivatives, we derive a measure of environmental suitability that we translate into a carrying capacity index. Our results show that workforce was not a limiting factor for local self-sufficiency. However, environmental carrying capacity may have been limiting in a scenario with a large population. An active investment into the environment, e.g., by the construction of terraces, could have helped to increase the degree of self-sufficiency. Future research should investigate the level of resilience of such a coupled socio-ecological system in relation to environmental and socio-cultural dynamics.
