This paper explores the application of a design-based research (DBR) methodology to inform the re-design of pedagogical strategies for studio-based classrooms within undergraduate higher education programmes. The goal is to establish a transferable model that is student-centred around authentic educational and professional learning environment as described as Dewey for the digital age. The paper outlines the initial analysis and exploration stage of a DBR methodology that leads to the development of a proposed ecology of resources designed to stimulate rhizomatic pedagogical environments intended to support collaborative student teams rather than the traditional classroom structure. The main aim of this project is to look at alternative models to the studio or classroom environment that can enhance and improve the more traditional teacher-centric environments of the classroom through focusing upon what the student does and their graduate profiles. These ‘ontological pedagogies’ will guide the student through the educational process but also provide them with the necessary skill set to enter into the professional design based working environment once they have graduated.

AbstractIntroduction:Colleges and universities are experiencing increasing demand for online courses in many healthcare disciplines, including emergency medical services (EMS). Development and implementation of online paramedic courses with the quality of education experienced in the traditional classroom setting is essential in order to maintain the integrity of the educational process. Currently, there is conflicting evidence of whether a significant difference exists in student performance between online and traditional nursing and allied health courses. However, there are no published investigations of the effectiveness of online learning by paramedic students.Hypothesis:Performance of paramedic students enrolled in an online, undergraduate, research methods course is equivalent to the performance of students enrolled in the same course provided in a traditional, classroom environment. Methods:Academic performance, learning styles, and course satisfaction surveys were compared between two groups of students. The course content was identical for both courses and taught by the same instructor during the same semester. The primary difference between the traditional course and the online course was the method of lecture delivery. Lectures for the on-campus students were provided live in a traditional classroom setting using PowerPoint slides. Lectures for the online students were provided using the same PowerPoint slides with prerecorded streaming audio and video. Results:A convenience sample of 23 online and 10 traditional students participated in this study. With the exception of two learning domains, the two groups of students exhibited similar learning styles as assessed using the Grasha-Riechmann Student Learning Style Scales instrument. The online students scored significantly lower in the competitive and dependent dimensions than did the on-campus students. Academic performance was similar between the two groups. The online students devoted slightly more time to the course than did the campus students, although this difference did not reach statistical significance. In general, the online students believed the online audio lectures were more effective than the traditional live lectures. Conclusion:Distance learning technology appears to be an effective mechanism for extending didactic paramedic education off-campus, and may be beneficial particularly to areas that lack paramedic training programs or adequate numbers of qualified instructors.

Palavras-chave: Educação a Distância, Estudantes, Gerações, Tecnologias Digitais. The Generations in EaD: Connected RealitiesAbstract Distance Education involves multiple subjects, scenarios, and experiences through digital technologies, promoting an educational process that is constantly changing. Thus, this article aims to identify who the enrolled students are, from 2007 to 2016, in distance mode in undergraduate and graduate courses of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande: FURG. To do so, a data collection of student registration in the University was conducted to allow the mapping. The analysis was based on studies of the evolutionary process between the Baby Boomers, X and Y generations from Oliveira (2009) perspective. To situate temporarily who these students are and which are the generations present in distance education, becomes fundamental to reflect and elaborate pedagogical strategies that meet the wishes and specificities of the current context of public higher education. Likewise, seeing that as a problem is a driving force for higher education institutions to (re) think distance education as a latent possibility of interactions and constructions in this educational and collective process. Keywords: Distance education, Students, Generations, Technologies.

The current stage in the development of education makes it possible to fix the «gaps» between the professional training of teachers and the request of educational practice for a specialist of a certain quality, overcoming which became possible with the provision of interaction of pedagogical universities with educational, scientific, public organizations, regional and municipal educational authorities, representatives of the working environment and business on the development of continuing teacher education. This vector of development has determined new requirements for the development of basic professional educational programs, for the focus of professional training of teaching staff. One of the reasons for opening unclaimed bachelor’s programs and graduating unclaimed specialists is insufficient attention to monitoring the needs of leading employers in the region, which allows obtaining information on the demand for specialists of a certain profile with the definition of professionally significant qualities and competencies. Analysis of the results of the monitoring study, comparing them with the requirements of professional standards, federal state educational standards of higher education and the capabilities of universities allows us to develop components of current basic professional educational programs. The author reveals the necessity of introducing into the educational and professional programs of preparation of masters of non-pedagogical specialties of the discipline "Didactics of higher education". Formation of pedagogical competences of the teacher of the higher school will allow the future specialists professional activity in the institutions of higher education. The article reveals the essence of didactic competence and peculiarities of its formation in higher education students in the current conditions of organizing the initial process. The competency approach should permeate all aspects of student training. Therefore, a special (didactic) competence should be included in the list of the graduates' learning outcomes. The didactic competence is the ability to apply knowledge of psychology and pedagogy (didactics) in the educational process of higher education institutions. In the orientation of the educational and professional program of the master of non-pedagogical specialties it is necessary to enter competencies that allow him to engage in teaching activities. General competences add to the ability to carry out pedagogical activities using innovative educational technologies, and special competences add to the ability to organize the educational process and carry out scientific research in order to solve topical problems of the theory, methodology, organization and practice of higher education students. One of the most important compulsory (normative) disciplines that enable the future specialist to teach special and professional disciplines in higher education institutions should be "Didactic of Higher Education". This is the main feature of forming didactic competence in higher education institutions. But the competent approach in higher education does not come down to a separate discipline, but because the phenomenon of integral and dynamic develops in the process of formal, non-formal and informal education and is in constant development and self-development. All stages of preparation of the master of non-pedagogical specialties for teaching activity should be directed on achievement of the main purpose of the educational process — formation of pedagogical competences of applicants of higher education.

The conventional introductory course rests upon the pedagogical assumption that the teacher's function is to transmit information (or knowledge) and that the student's function is to receive it. According to this transmitter-receiver model of the educational process, teaching begins with a “knower” who “transmits” what he knows to a “learner.” In higher education, certain euphemisms are employed to soften and furnish a color of legitimacy to this model: the teacher is a “scholar,” and “authority,” in his field; he possesses an “expert knowledge” which the student has come to school to “learn“; the student is the “learner.” The teacher's role, accordingly, is the active one of transmitting information and the student's role, accordingly, is the passive one of receiving and recording (or memorizing) this information.
