Pondok is the earliest traditional Islamic education institution established in Malaysia in the 19th century. Kelantan is one of the states in Malaysia with many pondoks until it’s known as "Serambi Mekah" (the veranda of Mecca). However, the pondok system has experienced a drastic decline since the 20th century and some were closed. Among the factors that led to the fall of this institution are the challenges from modern educational institutions such as the schools and madrasah, the death of teachers and the dependence on the traditional system of studies. So, the pondok system needs to be modernised with the purpose to spread Islamic education and knowledge to the Muslim community in Malaysia today. Hence, the objective of this study is to review the development of Pondok Sungai Durian and to study the modernisation of the education system practiced by this pondok. To achieve this objective, this study used qualitative method of study, which were the library research and field studies based on document analysis, interviews and observations at Pondok Sungai Durian to obtain research data. The findings show that the transformation of Pondok Sungai Durian has created harmonisation between traditional learning system based on the halaqah, talaqqi and the use of turath kitab with the modern system based on a classroom system with a more contemporary syllabus. In addition, this system encourages and enhances students' knowledge as they are exposed to the traditional and modern studies at the same time, and this is important in generating the culture of knowledge and producing authoritative `ulama’ in this era of globalisation. Hence, the survival of Pondok Sungai Durian as a centre of Islamic education that retains the elements of traditional and modern studies is very relevant today. The development of the pondok system, especially Pondok Sungai Durian, has contributed to the development of charismatic characters among the `ulama’ (Islamic scholars), the intellectual development, da'wah and the growth of Islamic knowledge among Muslim community.

This study also promotes that pesantren plays a pivotal role in fostering values of moderate Islam as one of the national challenges nowadays. The values highlight tolerance in understanding diversity to realize a peaceful life. The today’s condition showing the development of pesantren can be used as the prospect for Muslims to spread the concept of moderate Islam that leads us not to be easily provoked by hoaxes. It implies that values of moderate Islam need to be sustainably promoted in pesantren as an Islamic education institution.

The presence of modernization in the world of Islamic education seems to be a necessity that cannot be avoided. The birth of reformer figures in the Islamic world who came from the Middle East and Indonesia became a separate impetus to accelerate the pace of renewal of Islamic education. This research uses library research type (library research) which is carried out using literature (literature) in the form of books, notes, and research reports from previous research. Sources of data can be obtained from documents or document studies. Document study, namely looking for data about things or variables in the form of notes or transcripts, books, newspapers, magazines, and other documents needed for research data. This research proves that the flow of renewal in Islamic education finds momentum when the Indonesian government is able to synergize with Muslim figures. Likewise, the accommodative and cooperative attitude displayed by some Indonesian Muslim leaders and Islamic community organizations has contributed to the government's belief that advancing Islamic educational institutions is not something that is scary but will add stability to the condition of government and politics in Indonesia. It is at this stage that the reform of Islamic education is ultimately integrated into the national education system.

The various verses of the Quran explain that zikr and Tafakkur  are always related. They should have become the spirit of the education system so that the graduates could possess a balanced zikr and Tafakkur . On the contrary, education is more focused on the development of knowledge. The dichotomy of knowledge affects education where ideally Islamic education includes zikr and Tafakkur  education. Therefore, the integration of zikr and Tafakkur  is something important, urgent, and beneficial for the improvement of the nation's morality. The purpose of this study is to ensure the importance of the concept of zikr and Tafakkur  in the perspective of the Qur'an by providing thought on the importance of the integration of zikr and Tafakkur  in Islamic education so that it could be the basis for the development of Islamic education. This article shows the numerous benefits created in the 7th-13th century A.D. by a primary education institution named Kuttab. Kuttab is an educational institution that teaches the Qur'an to be read and memorized, history to be studied, and Arabic verses. This article utilizes an approach to literature research, gathering different references related to Kuttab. The empirical content process then evaluates the relation, and conclusions are drawn from the reference analysis. This paper concludes that with education in Madrasah Ibtidaiyah, Kuttab institutions have a similar curriculum. The excellence of Kuttab focuses more on memorizing the Qur'an so that in the golden age (7-12 years), Kuttab students will remember the entire material of the Qur'an, in addition to teachers who have excelled and skills. Unlike Ibtidaiyah madrasahs, which do not focus students on memorizing the Qur'an, and as teachers in Kuttab, teachers are also far from professionalism. In comparison to the current madrasah Ibtidaiyah curriculum, the learning materials in Kuttab are thin. Keywords : curriculum, kuttab, madrasah, teacher, student.

It focuses particularly to understand the Pesantren’s motivation and ways of implementation of planting of multicultural values as an effort to maintaining harmony with the surrounding community, which is dominated by ethnic Chinese. This research seeks to answer what are the urgency, the ways of implementation, as well as the responses in terms of educating multicultural values carried out by Pesantren Kauman of Lasem. This pesantren has its own uniqueness because it stands in the midst of a non-Muslim community. This can strengthen the opinion that religion can be social cohesion. This is a qualitative study which employed field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation study as data collection tools. The main research site is located in Lasem, which is also known as Little China. It found out that the Pesantren grows the motivation to implement multicultural values from theological and sociological perspective. Furthermore, in terms of implementation, the pesantren utilizes the formal-pedagogical as well as nonformal-sociological aspects. This study also concludes that the implementation reaped both pro and contra responses. However, in general the Kauman Pesantren from Lasem succeeded in teaching multicultural values and using them to maintain harmony. This study shows that multicultural values can be taught formally-pedagogically or non-formally-sociologically. The theological aspect can be the point of departure, but the sociological aspects are also essential to consider in planting multicultural values which are then implemented in society. The Pesantren Kauman of Lasem has finally showed successful efforts in teaching multicultural values and using them to maintain harmony in a multicultural society. The results of this study are an evidence that multicultural values are able to be taught formally-pedagogically or non-formally-sociologically. The theological aspect can be the point of departure, but the sociological aspect is also essential to be considered in planting multicultural values which are then implemented in society.
