The paper focuses on the relationships between theory and practice and the consequences of dislocating theory from practice as they are illustrated through fiction. The case study carried out here concerns an exemplary novel, Ninety Eighty-Four by George Orwell, observing how the literary discourse can display a confrontation between two linguistic models, each resulted from a different theory: “instrumentalism” (Winston Smith) and “determinism” (O’ Brien). Also, the possibility of identifying an Orwellian model as opposed to the Sapir-Whorf and the linguistic models deserves examination. Newspeak is full of problematic aspects: ideology shapes the language by means of “wooden language” (la langue de bois, in Françoise Thom’s terms). Therefore, the historical “regime of relevance” (Galin Tihanov) makes possible a peculiar (use of) theory: an instrument that translates the ideology becomes the very essence of the determinist theory on the language in a totalitarian state. In discussing the practical consequences of literary theory, Stanley Fish points out that they are inexistent, because theory can never be united with practice, as it is actually impossible to separate theory from practice – a similar observation made by Steven Knapp and Walter B. Michaels. Whether consequences are real poses a challenge: following Edward Said’s argument, Steven Mailloux observes that theory can be consequential by rhetorical means: theory does what all discursive practices do and that is that it attempts to persuade its readers (or population in a totalitarian state) to adopt its point of view, its way of seeing texts and the world.

The use of electronic money as a transaction tool in everyday life is a necessity, people use the money to pay for various needs such as buying goods in the marketplace, buying food online, KRL train tickets, paying toll tickets and others. On the other hand, the use of electronic money in society raises questions, especially for Muslims. Is electronic money as a medium of exchange in accordance with the Qur'an and As-Sunnah? Several Indonesian Muslim scholars who are concerned about the practice of Muamalah Maaliyah have given their thoughts and opinions on the use of electronic money. This paper is a step in answering this question. This paper will try to provide an explanation why the use of electronic money is not in accordance with the Qur'an and As-Sunnah. This research uses case study – qualitative research as research methodology. For this study, data were collected from documentation: Bank Indonesia regulations, the fatwa of the Sharia Council-Indonesian Ulema Council (DSN-MUI), fatwas of world scholars, instructions for the use of electronic money from banks/issuing companies, participant observations and observations, namely as users of electronic money who also use electronic money. Experienced as a banker in a state-owned bank. Using this method, this research will explore and explain how electronic money is managed and why some Muslims doubt this money. The conclusion of this study is that Bank Indonesia as the regulator and DSN-MUI issued a fatwa and this is in line with the fatwa issued by Majma' al-Fiqh al-Islami under the World Muslim League in its decision No. 86, 3/9 explains that “bank deposits, both in Islamic banks and conventional banks, from the fiqh point of view are debt, having different views on the concept and characteristics of electronic money used in Indonesia. The solution to this problem is that Bank Indonesia as a regulator needs to open space so that electronic money that is in accordance with sharia provisions can be realized so that the interests of the Muslim community are met. Abstrak Penggunaan uang elektronik sebagai alat transaksi dalam kehidupan sehari-hari adalah suatu keniscayaan, masyarakat menggunakan uang tersebut untuk membayar berbagai keperluan seperti membeli barang di marketplace, membeli makanan secara online, tiket kereta api KRL, membayar tiket tol dan lain-lain. Di sisi lain, penggunaan uang elektronik di masyarakat menimbulkan pertanyaan terutama bagi umat Islam. Apakah uang elektronik sebagai alat tukar sesuai dengan Al-Qur'an dan As-Sunnah? Beberapa cendekiawan muslim Indonesia yang concern terhadap praktik Muamalah Maaliyah telah memberikan pemikiran dan pendapatnya tentang penggunaan uang elektronik. Tulisan ini merupakan langkah dalam menjawab pertanyaan tersebut. Tulisan ini akan mencoba memberikan penjelasan mengapa penggunaan uang elektronik tidak sesuai dengan Al-Qur’an dan As-Sunnah. Penelitian ini menggunakan studi kasus – penelitian kualitatif sebagai metodologi penelitian. Untuk penelitian ini data dikumpulkan dari dokumentasi: ketentuan Bank Indonesia, fatwa Dewan Syariah-Majelis Ulama Indonesia (DSN-MUI), fatwa ulama sedunia, instruksi penggunaan uang elektronik dari bank/perusahaan penerbit, observasi dan observasi partisipan yaitu sebagai pengguna uang elektronik yang juga berpengalamanan sebagai bankir di bank milik pemerintah. Dengan menggunakan metode ini, penelitian ini akan mengeksplorasi dan menjelaskan bagaimana uang elektronik dikelola dan mengapa sebagian umat Islam meragukan uang ini. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah Bank Indonesia selaku regulator dan DSN-MUI yang mengeluarkan fatwa dan ini sejalan dengan fatwa yang dikeluarkan oleh Majma’ al-Fiqh al-Islami di bawah Liga Muslim Dunia dalam keputusannya No. 86, 3/9 menerangkan bahwa “simpanan bank, baik di bank Islam maupun bank konvensional, dari sudut pandang fiqih merupakan hutang, memiliki pandangan yang berbeda mengenai konsep dan karakteristik uang elektronik yang digunakan di Indonesia. Solusi dari permasalahan ini adalah Bank Indonesia sebagai regulator perlu membuka ruang agar uang elektronik yang sesuai dengan ketentuan syariah dapat diwujudkan sehingga kepentingan masyarakat muslimin terpenuhi. Following Karen Barad’s diffractive methodology, we encounter feminist documentary cinema as a diffraction apparatus: that is, as technologies that make part of the world intelligible to another part of the world in specific ways, by means of intra-actions between human and non-human agencies and objects of observation. We propose three analytical tools: materiality, emotionality, and performativity. In this article, we analyse two Spanish documentary films that render visible the potential of feminist documentary cinema for building alliances from and against precarity: Cuidado, resbala and Yes, We Fuck! Reading the insights and patterns raised in each case study through one another (i.e., diffractively), we discuss the intra-actions by which each of these films participates in co-creating the real. We end up describing three possible effects of feminist material-discursive practices in documentary cinema.

Case overview This case study talks about women workers who face a glass ceiling at the management level and deplorable working conditions at the informal level. This case involves women in the paper bag-making business, a part of the urban informal sector. The paper bag-making business provides employment and income generation for the urban poor. The focus in this study is on women production workers, rather than entrepreneurs or professional managers. Focus of the study will be on the change in the pattern of income distribution within the family-based household, the degree of bargaining power derived from productive work and income and impact of technology on the plight of unskilled women force and how technology and vocational training can lead to utilization of manpower being wasted because of lack of synergy between technology and the informal sector in India. Expected learning outcomes Four key points of selection, training, assessment and leadership all have been addressed in this case study, and the relevance of these points is important from the point of view of management students who have to understand the linkages and the hidden costs these informal sector occupations come with and then to device an appropriate strategy to bring and use these human resources to their full capacity by utilizing the existing resources instead of adding new ones, which in development economics is known as Solow residual. The role of stakeholders is critical in addressing challenges with or problems in small-scale sports events. The purpose of this study is to investigate the perceptions of the event stakeholders toward sports events, with a particular focus on the role of residents in a tourist destination. The goal is to understand their perceptions with respect to different topics and in particular to the sustainable development of the tourist destination. This case study focuses on the World Junior Alpine Ski Championships 2019 in Trentino Val di Fassa—Italy (JWC2019). Applying a mixed methodology, the study analyzes the stakeholders during the sports event (quantitative method) and the point of view of the residents in their stakeholder role after the sports event (qualitative method). The main findings of this study show that residents differ from tourists and other stakeholders in terms of their perception of the event and its strengths. But when it comes to the perceptions regarding the territory, the groups of stakeholders analyzed do not seem to have systematically different opinions. Some paradoxes do, however, emerge with respect to the residents’ awareness of their role as stakeholders and the implications of the event with respect to sustainability and how such an event may underpin a concept of sustainable development for the territory as a whole.

Abstract Bertolt Brecht is generally regarded as the most influential and politically engaged left-wing playwright of the Twentieth century. Traces of his theory and practice are to be found around the world, including in the works of important Egyptian playwrights of the sixties such as Yūsuf Idrīs, Naǧīb Surūr and Alfred Faraǧ. Brecht’s work and ideas did permeate the theory and practice of the three Egyptian playwrights, though even if they all shared a commitment to social issues, critics agree that the Egyptians ignored the philosophical essence of Brecht’s devices or did not have a clear ideological grounding – thus concluding that their understanding of Brecht was partial. Through a study of epic aspects of Alfred Faraǧ’s theatre, this article aims instead to highlight the transformations operated by the playwright to mould epic theatre to fit his own ideology, his aesthetic and the local context in the logic of tamṣīr (Egyptianisation).

I appreciate Harold Fromm's emphasis on the diverse approaches found in the ecocritical field and on the relevance of ecocriticism to the goals and activities of the MLA because this was the future envisioned by the early scholars. Ecocriticism is an expansive, interdisciplinary field of study that arose from a shared desire for a new literary theory and practice. This shared interest has made ecocriticism a robust field that continues to grow, as seen in the newest ecocriticism program in the United States: the literature-and-environment program that started in the fall of 2012 in the English department at the University of Idaho, spearheaded by Scott Slovic, Jennifer Ladino, Erin James, Janis Johnson, and Jodie Nicotra. The field is also becoming rooted as an academic discipline around the world, in countries such as China, India, Brazil, and Australia, to name only a few.

ABSTRACTWith its intense drama and marked eroticism, the story of Judith's slaying of Holofernes was often represented in baroque visual art and music. The overwhelming majority of musical representations are found in oratorios, with only three cantatas known to have been devoted to the subject. The oratorio's dramatic framework was suited for emphasizing Judith's multifaceted figure through character depiction, contrast and conflict, while the cantata's epic nature and lack of direct character intervention made staging conflict in that genre more difficult. Yet precisely because of these limitations, the cantata constitutes a revealing case study for exploring the strategies composers employed to give agency to Judith.This article focuses on the baroque cantata settings of the Judith story by Sébastien de Brossard and Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (both from about 1708, both based on a text by La Motte). To illustrate their differing perspectives on Judith, I employ the concept of focalization – used in literary theory to mean point of view or filtered perspective – as a theoretical framework. The well-known Judith paintings by Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi (the so-called Uffizi Judith) provide a lucid example of focalization through the differing perspectives of the two maidservants and offer a valuable methodological tool for understanding the two differing compositional approaches. Whereas Brossard follows La Motte's narrative dutifully by emphasizing swiftness of action at the expense of character depiction, Jacquet de La Guerre bypasses it through instrumental accompaniments and independent symphonies that give voice to Judith, despite a text that downplays her character.

The author examines the history of pragmatism and maintains that a thematic continuity runs through the classical pragmatists, neopragmatitsts and contemporary pragmatists. This continuity can be vaguely characterized as an integration of theory and practice, but experience gives theory its content such that action is always guiding the formation of knowledge. There are four implications of this continuity. Pragmatists are centrally concerned with the human relationship to a process-oriented and evolving conception of nature. For pragmatists, our beliefs are regarded not as propositions that map onto a separate and fixed reality, but instead their truth emerges out of the habits beliefs generate. Pragmatism emphasizes an openness to possibility since our access to the world of experience is mediated by a variety of selective interests, intellectual histories, varying linguistic and discursive practices. Pragmatists are deeply concerned with the social and political problems that confront us on a daily basis. The author also examines the manner in which James understands the term “metaphysics” given that pragmatism is a method for settling “metaphysical disputes.” Jamesian existential pluralism implies to maximize all possibilities that can satisfy everyone as much as possible without impeding and harming another's capacity to experience a rich and novel world. The author analyzes Todd May’s approach to the analytic-continental divide and concludes that if settlement embraces James’s thick conception of experience, then the resulting ontological pluralism is the best settlement possible, and this commitment to pluralism requires dissolving the exclusionary practices the analytic-continental divide suggests philosophically.

‘Localisation’ became the new buzzword after the World Humanitarian Summit in 2016. However, the nature of the commitment to localisation since has been questioned. What is ‘the local’? How does localisation work in practice? With little empirical research, generalities in theory and practice have prevailed, preventing a nuanced approach to conceptualising the local. This study aims to build a foundation for the understanding of connotative, nuanced ‘locals’ and to explore the multiple dimensions of the local in both theory and practice. The methodology of a case study research, with a semi-structured and flexible approach, facilitated the identification of different elements of a locally led response that resounded in each of the cases. Combined with a literature review, this article aims to answer the questions: What underlying assumptions regarding the local are found in localisation rhetoric, and how do multi-local dynamics challenge locally led disaster response in practice? Answering this question necessitates deconstructing the multi-local in theory and critically examining expressions concerning the local in practice. In this study, one dimension of the local that was observed was ‘the local as locale,’ with the local describing primarily national actors as opposed to the international, without taking local power dynamics into account. The local was also seen in terms of governance, where local–national relations and intranational strife characterised locally led responses, and the national focus excluded local actors who were not usually involved in governance. The local also became a source of legitimation, with local, national and international actors all using the discourse of ‘the state in charge’ and ‘the community knows best’ to legitimise their own role as response actors while disputing others’ capacities. The multi-local lens provides a perspective with potential to change current practices and contribute to a more transformative agenda.

The Law Institute of recognition of a State is one of the most difficult, controversial, and dynamically developing institute of the national and the international law. However, at present there are many states that are not officially recognized by most other states, which since the beginning of the 1990s began to be designated by the term “unrecognized states”, “de facto countries”, “self-proclaimed states”, etc. The presence of unrecognized states is a complex problem in the theory and practice of international relations, since, possessing all other signs of statehood, they do not have international diplomatic recognition and cannot be members of the UN. Today there are about 120 unrecognized states in the political map of the world, which are recognized by the territory of 60 countries. The problem of unrecognized states is also relevant for the post-Soviet space, since after the collapse of the USSR, several territorial entities arose, the status of which has not been recognized at the international level so far. In the proposed article, the authors tried to find out the reasons for the emergence of unrecognized states, identified the main features of such territorial entities and possible options for their further fate as countries that do not have the status of a generally recognized state. The protracted legal uncertainty of the status of the unrecognized states aggravates the problem of further international cooperation of the world community from the point of view of global security and the possible threat of conflicts that could cause a world political crisis.
