AbstractThe objective of this work is to analyze the quality of life of the households in the cities of Chihuahua and Tijuana according to the sex of the head of the household, by means of the construction of an index. A sociodemographic overview of the cities is presented, based on the ii Conteo de Población y Vivienda 2005, as well as an analysis of the quality of life in the households base on the Encuesta sobre Calidad de Vida, Competitividad y Violencia Social en Hogares de 26 Ciudades Mexicanas, applied in December of 2005. An indicator of quality of life is included, and logistic regression is applied to explain the difference in the quality levels of life in both cities and for each sex of head of the household. The regression model shows that variable sex represents a small increase in the risk of having a bad quality of life for the households directed by women in the city of Tijuana, whereas for the city of Chihuahua this increase does not appear, that is, the sex of the head of the household does not influence in the quality of life of the homes; the variables age, marital status and education are those that have a significant determination in both cities.

While self-report of overall quality of life has been widely examined, there are no studies that explore the impact of the relative importance people give to the various categories of their quality of life. Therefore, with a quantitative methodology and a co-relational transverse design, we analyze differences in the assessment when the importance given to each category is evaluated. Participants were 530 students from the city of Antofagasta in the North of Chile, aged between 15 and 18 years. They were from subsidized, public secondary schools and private and state universities in the city who were assessed using the KIDSCREEN-27 questionnaire. Results: Differences were found in the assessment of categories when results were analyzed based on gender and age and when incorporating an assessment of importance. Even when the results were not conclusive, there was evidence of a need to incorporate an importance variable when assessing quality of life.

Introduction. The number of people who are considered to be either overweight or obese continues to increase, worldwide. The aim of the paper was to determine the influence of overweight on the quality of life of health workers. Material and methods. The study of prevalence was used. We observed 108 health workers both men and women from the Institute for Public Health in the City of Nis. The questionnaire Obesity Related Well-Being 97 (ORWELL97) was applied in all health workers. Results. A hundred and five health workers filled in the ORWELL97 questionnaire. There were 40% of men and 60% of women; 72% of them were married and 28% of them were single; 68% were from the urban area and 32% were from the rural area. The average age was 29.5 (SD=3.2) and the average value of BMI was 25.4 (SD=4,0). There were 54 (48.6%) health workers having normal weight and there were 51(5.4%) who were considered overweight. No one was obese among them. The difference between the average sum of scores in the group of health workers who had normal weight and the group of health workers who were overweight was not statistically significant (t=1.1 i p<0.05). Nor was the difference statistically significant for the average sum of scores of subquestion O (t=3.6 and p<0.05), and subquestion R (t=2.9 and p<0.05). BMI showed a weak positive correlation with both occurrence and relevance of symptoms. A weak positive correlation of BMI was found with average sum of scores in the first, second and third groups of questions in ORWELL 97 questionnaire. Conclusion. According to the presented results, health workers who were overweight did not have lower quality of life than health workers who had normal weight.

The structure and distribution of quality of life forms a key area of research in human geography, with particular attention given to conditions at the disadvantaged end of the quality-of-life spectrum. To date, most work has focused on the national, regional, or interurban scale. However, whereas descriptive pattern identification and mapping is of value at the macroscale as a pointer to detailed work, policy-relevant quality-of-life indicators are more likely to be derived at the local scale and to be related to specific life concerns. In the present research, a multiscale multiindicator methodology is used to examine the structure and distribution of life quality in Glasgow. In a series of analyses in which objective and subjective indicators are employed at different geographic scales, the city-wide pattern of life quality is identified and a number of severely disadvantaged subareas isolated. Within one such subarea the quality-of-life experience of a particular social group, the elderly, is examined in detail. Application of the methodology in other cities could facilitate intercity and cross-cultural comparisons of quality-of-life variations within contemporary urban areas. Such investigations can also be of practical utility for decisionmakers seeking to define priorities for social policy.

Abstract: The Health Situation Analysis is a tool that seeks to improve the health and quality of life of pop- ulations. A cross-sectional descriptive study was designed; with dual purpose: to relate living con- ditions and health behavior and disease process in the Cerro de Guayabal community and make practical-teaching practice with students of the fifth semester of Medicine. 266 families, 1134 people (91%) of the total population were surveyed. Only 71% reached primary level. More than half are in regular housing conditions and health culture fair to poor. 87% do not cover basic needs. More than 50% are dysfunctional families. 56% were risk dispensary and 11% were sick. Given the living conditions and lack of health center it seems to be hidden morbidity. There is a risk of traffic and labor accidents. Waste collection, access to drinking water and environmental pollution were critical issues. There is an urgent need for health interventions to improve the health state and quality of life of this community. Key words: life quality, health state, public health.

The blooming of urban expansion has led to the improvement of urban life, but some of the negative externalities have affected the life quality of urban dwellers, both directly and indirectly. As a result of this, research related to the quality of life has gained much attention among multidisciplinary researchers around the world. A number of attempts have been made by previous researchers to identify, assess, quantify, and map quality of life or well-being under various kinds of perspectives. The objectives of this research were to create a life quality index (LQI) and identify the spatial distribution pattern of LQI in Kandy City, Sri Lanka. Multiple factors were decomposed, a hierarchy was constructed by the multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) method, and 13 factors were selected under two main criteria—environmental and socioeconomic. Pairwise comparison matrices were created, and the weight of each factor was determined by the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Finally, gradient analysis was employed to examine the spatial distribution pattern of LQI from the city center to the periphery. The results show that socioeconomic factors affect the quality of life more strongly than environmental factors, and the most significant factor is transportation. The highest life quality zones (26% of the total area) were distributed around the city center, while the lowest zones represented only 9% of the whole area. As shown in the gradient analysis, more than 50% of the land in the first five kilometers from the city center comes under the highest life quality zone. This research will provide guidance for the residents and respective administrative bodies to make Kandy City a livable city. It the constructed model can be applied to any geographical area by conducting necessary data calibration.
