Antecedentes. La complejidad ambiental observada en una localidad ha sido estudiada a través de un modelo isomórfico en el que se anticipa la emergencia de dos identidades: una entrópica y otra neguentrópica. En situaciones de riesgo, escasez e insalubridad, las comunidades se organizan para reducir los efectos de los desastres naturales sobre la salud comunitaria. Objetivo. Especificar un modelo para el estudio del estrés y la resiliencia comunitaria ante los eventos de riesgo ambiental y los desastres naturales. Método. Se llevó a cabo un estudio no experimental, transversal y exploratorio con una selección no probabilística de 600 afectados por las inundaciones de un rio en la zona del centro de México. Resultados. Se encontraron diferencias significativas entre hombres y mujeres con respecto a sus niveles de riesgo, estrés y resiliencia que sirvieron para especificar el modelo de relaciones de dependencia entre las variables que explican la complejidad ambiental isomórfica. Discusión. En relación con otras especificaciones de modelos se recomienda incluir las variables con la finalidad de demostrar las trayectorias lógicas de relaciones de dependencia propuestas.Background. Environmental complexity observed in one locality has been studied through an isomorphic model in which the emergence of two identities are anticipated: an entropic and other neguentropic. At risk, shortages and unsanitary conditions, communities are organized to reduce the effects of natural disasters on community health. Objective. Specify a model for the study of stress and community resilience to environmental risk events and natural disasters. Method. a non-experimental, cross-sectional and exploratory study with a nonrandom selection of 600 affected by the flooding of a river in the downtown area of Mexico was held. Results. significant differences between men and women regarding their risk levels, stress and resilience that served to specify the model of dependency relationships between variables that explain the environmental complexity isomorphic found. Discussion. For other specifications recommended models include variables in order to demonstrate the logical paths proposals dependency relationships.

This is a study of high school students’ attitudes toward the English language in Lebanon. The purpose of this research is to assess the extent of use of English inside and outside the schools taking into consideration the attitude towards the language. Two schools were selected, one upper middle class and one lower middle class. This selection of different social classes aims at finding whether a student’s socio- economical background affects his/ her attitude toward the English language. The sample of respondents returned 52 questionnaires from the two schools. Although this sample was a modest one, it highlighted the differences in attitudes towards the English language, but these attitudes did not relate much to the socioeconomic class as much as personal preferences. However, what was salient in this research is how students from the lower middle class were more inclined to use English to raise their social status and both groups agreed that English is essential to their progress in life.

An international data science challenge, called National Ecological Observatory Network—National Institute of Standards and Technology data science evaluation, was set up in autumn 2017 with the goal to improve the use of remote sensing data in ecological applications. The competition was divided into three tasks: (1) individual tree crown (ITC) delineation, for identifying the location and size of individual trees; (2) alignment between field surveyed trees and ITCs delineated on remote sensing data; and (3) tree species classification. In this paper, the methods and results of team Fondazione Edmund Mach (FEM) are presented. The ITC delineation (Task 1 of the challenge) was done using a region growing method applied to a near-infrared band of the hyperspectral images. The optimization of the parameters of the delineation algorithm was done in a supervised way on the basis of the Jaccard score using the training set provided by the organizers. The alignment (Task 2) between the delineated ITCs and the field surveyed trees was done using the Euclidean distance among the position, the height, and the crown radius of the ITCs and the field surveyed trees. The classification (Task 3) was performed using a support vector machine classifier applied to a selection of the hyperspectral bands and the canopy height model. The selection of the bands was done using the sequential forward floating selection method and the Jeffries Matusita distance. The results of the three tasks were very promising: team FEM ranked first in the data science competition in Task 1 and 2, and second in Task 3. The Jaccard score of the delineated crowns was 0.3402, and the results showed that the proposed approach delineated both small and large crowns. The alignment was correctly done for all the test samples. The classification results were good (overall accuracy of 88.1%, kappa accuracy of 75.7%, and mean class accuracy of 61.5%), although the accuracy was biased toward the most represented species.

The aim of the study is to indicate the need for variability in the presentation of clinical pathways, in various phases of their implementation, and to define the forms of presentation of clinical pathways required by physicians in both the Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Systems, as well as the determinants of the selection of the forms of description, in relation to the performed medical actions. The results of the study are a significant lead-in towards further research on the required form of the user interface in systems supporting dynamic business process management (dynamic BPM). The research is a pilot of a survey study, conducted to ascertain the usefulness and feasibility of the adopted methodology, for a wider project on the determinants of the form of description of clinical pathways. An exploratory pilot survey, in a large multi-specialization hospital in Poland, was conducted. The survey sample consisted of 28 purposely selected heads of all hospital departments, and the medical team of the pediatric ward. Descriptive analysis was carried out on the data collected. The results of the study have unambiguously supported the claim that physicians require the form of presentation of clinical pathways to change, depending on the particular phase of the diagnostic–therapeutic process, as well as establishing the main determinants thereof. This pilot study is one of the first attempts to establish the factors determining the choice of clinical pathway presentation in HIS/EMR systems. While not conclusively decisive in terms of the forms of presentation or the determinants of their choice, it indicates the directions of further research, both from the point of view of ergonomics and the usability of HIS/EMR systems, as well as the management of medical knowledge, as part of the dynamic management of clinical pathways.

This work seeks to understand how design practitioners discover, select, and adapt design methods and methodologies. Design methods and methodologies are mainly used for educational purposes and are not formally transferred into design practice and industry. This prevents design practitioners from accessing the rich body of research and knowledge posed by academia. Various web platforms and textbooks allow users to discover or search for design methods, but little support is provided to assess whether or not a method is appropriate for the context or the task at hand. In this exploratory study, interviews were conducted with practicing engineers and designers. Interview responses were coded and analyzed in an effort to understand the patterns in searching, selecting, assessing, and exchanging experiences with peers in professional practice. This analysis showed that interviewees would like to search for design methods based on their desired outcomes. Additionally, interviewees considered their personal contacts to be the most valuable source of new methods. These insights show that web-based communities of practice may be a potential link between academia and industry, but existing web repositories and communities require further development in order to better meet the needs of the design practitioner community.

With the development of technology and the phenomenon of digitalization, companies have begun to use IT solutions to suit their needs and competences, so that they can improve their organizational performance. One of the most used solutions by the firms for optimization, efficiency, dynamic adaptation and their integration with the technological trends is represented by Business Process Management solutions. Through this paper, it is desired to analyse the most used BPM tools used by the companies providing industrial services in Romania. In this regard, an exploratory study was carried out that presents the most important characteristics of the most popular BPM solutions from Romania. These solutions are compared according to a set of criteria, among which: operating system, main features, access mode, training ways, technical support, or integration with other systems. At the end of this paper, there are presented some suggestions regarding what an industrial service company should do to establish what kind of BPM solution is good for it.
