Abstract The presence of foreigners in the province of Málaga is highly noticeable, especially in specific municipalities such as the city of Málaga, coastal areas, or villages in the Axarquia region. But from a geographical point of view, there are comparatively few investigations dedicated to the definition of the space in which foreign immigrants reside. The aim of this research is to provide a description of the habitats where people who were born abroad tend to concentrate in the province of Málaga. The main novelty of the research is the scale of analysis we have used being intramunicipal, based on Nomenclator statistics. This is especially relevant when we are dealing with small municipalities in some of which the proportion of foreigners is quite high, because it is the only one that allows us to characterise the habitat of the foreigners.

The assassination of Amίlcar Cabral in January, 1973, was reported in the American news media, but there was no follow-up, and few Americans recognize Cabral's name, or even the name of Portuguese Guinea, the small colony he had hoped to lead to independence. From a geographical point of view the obscprity of Portuguese Guinea might seem well deserved. Wedged between Senegal and the independent Republic of Guinea, it is about 40 per cent the size of Portugal, but its population is less than that of the city of Lisbon. Mostly hot and humid, much of the colony is covered by bayous and salt-water swamps. The people, who until recently were about 99 per cent illiterate, are divided into a number of traditionally antagonistic groups that are religiously, culturally and linguistically distinct.

The paper deals with issues of high-rise building development and contemporary problems related to the formation of city development vision in Lithuania. The analysis focuses on the possibilities and problems arising in the process of developing the Special Plan of high-rise building arrangement in Klaipėda in the formation of the visual image of the city. The methodology of this Plan is discussed by the author in two papers. The present paper is the first one and analyses two stages of the plan development. The first stage is the analysis of the current situation in Klaipėda and possibilities to introduce high-rise buildings into the city morphostructure. This stage comprises 7 aspects: evaluation of the territory development from the point of view of investment possibilities; historical development of the city structure; hierarchy of values of preserved territories; analysis of the territory planning documents regulating townscape formation; evaluation of visual peculiarities; definition of visual identity zones, analysis and evaluation of important mass view points as well as evolvents of views seen from them. The second stage of developing the Special Plan constitutes efforts to define the conception of high-rise buildings arrangement on a city scale, central part scale and old-town scale. Santrauka Straipsnis skirtas aukštybinės statybos plėtros klausimui ir su tuo susijusioms šiandieninėms miesto plėtros vizijos formavimo problemoms Lietuvoje. Nagrinėjamos Klaipėdos miesto vizualinio įvaizdžio plėtros galimybės ir problemos rengiant Klaipėdos miesto aukštybinių pastatų išdėstymo specialųjį planą (SP). Šio plano metodikai aptarti autorė numatė parengti du straipsnius. Šiame, pirmajame, liečiamos dvi plano rengimo stadijos. Pirmoji – tai esama Klaipėdos miesto būklė, galimybės miesto morfostruktūroje rastis aukštybiniams pastatams; jos aptarimas apima 7 aspektus – miesto teritorijos pagal investicines plėtros galimybes vertinimą; miesto struktūros istorinę raidą; saugomų teritorijų vertybinę hierarchiją; dokumentų sprendinių, turinčių įtakos miestovaizdžių formavimui, analizę; vizualinių ypatumų vertinimą; miesto vizualinio identiteto zonų nustatymą ir svarbiausių masinės apžvalgos taškų bei iš jų matomo vaizdo išklotinių tyrimą ir nustatymą. Antroji plano rengimo stadija – tai aukštybinių pastatų išdėstymo koncepcijos paieškos miesto mastu, centrinės dalies mastu ir senamiesčio mastu.

In recent years increasing attention has been paid to environmental effects that may result from marine dredging and disposal operations. In general, the fine-grained fraction of handled sediments can be dispersed far from the intervention site as a turbidity plume, depending on the specific site and operational parameters. Starting from a literature review, this paper suggests standards for estimating and characterizing the sediment source term, for setting up far-field modeling studies and analyzing numerical results, with the aim of optimizing, also from an economic point of view, the different project, execution and monitoring phases. The paper proposes an integrated modeling approach for simulating sediment dispersion due to sediment handling operations in different marine-coastal areas (off-shore, near-shore and semi-enclosed basins). Attention is paid to the characterization of sediment source terms due to different operational phases (removal, transport and disposal). The paper also deals with the definition of accuracy level of modeling activities, with regard to the main physical processes characterizing the different marine–coastal areas and to the type of environmental critical issues near the intervention site (if any). The main relationships between modeling and monitoring are given for the different design and management phases to support the selection of appropriate technical alternatives and monitoring actions and to ensure the environmental compliance of the proposed interventions.

Design/methodology/approach: The historical and urban development of Tyumen is analyzed for the period of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The city division into historical areas and administrative districts and the current state of historical areas are considered. The territories of districts and characteristic architectural features are revealed. Purpose: The purpose of this work is to show the development of architecture of the city late in the 19th and early 20th centuries with regard to economic, political and historical factors. Research findings: The analysis of historical areas of Tyumen is given from the point of view of its urban development and architecture. The research utilizes modern and historical maps of the city of Tyumen and scientific publications. The research method consists of the analysis of information about the urban development using the literature and the correlation of this information with historical materials. The analysis is given to architectural dominants and their impact on the architectural and planning of historical areas. Research findings: The definition of historical areas locations and the analysis of the architecture development in Tyumen of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The diagrams are suggested for the location of architectural areas (churches, factories) and important town-planning elements (squares, squares, cemeteries, etc.) in the city infrastructure. Originality/value: The analysis is given to the intensive population growth in Tyumen, which affects the road system. For the last decade, a new system of streets has been developed both inside and outside the city. This fact affects both the urban planning and the architectural appearance of the city because some of architectural areas have been lost.

s, including the use of urbonymic systems from the point of view of their communicative existence. Urbonymes, their typology, linguistic analysis of functioning of systems of Kazakhstan cities-related onomastic terms are promising issues of Kazakhstan’s Russian studies. The authors emphasize the close relation of onomastic processes to the society life. The formation of onomastic space of independent Kazakhstan and the definition of its national expression are considered by the researchers as one of the most important problems of the modern Kazakhstan linguistics. Language planning and language policy should become an integral part of a general policy aimed at improving the social, economic and cultural situation in the city. This provision is significant for the nomination process in Pavlodar, the onomastic system of which, like of a similar system of any Kazakhstan city, reflects the sociocultural changes taking and having already taken place. The article specifically shows promising new approaches to the study of the city, in particular, from the standpoint of study of general cultural landscape of the city.

In the last century, the world has become an “urban world” and the cities began to concentrate a larger number of people (with over of 50% of global population living in the cities). Currently, the social-environmental challenges that the cities face, drive new alternatives to the contemporary urban planning. In those conditions, it is expected than the cities become the centers of changes and they find new possibilities in the urban planning field taking into account the concepts of resilience and sustainability during the elaboration of municipal policies. This case study research was conducted in the city of Bogota, capital of Colombia, and evaluated the Master Plan - MP (as instrument of urban planning), and the commitment to this plan, with the construction of resilience in a highly susceptible city to climate change. Also included many challenges such as, population dynamics, sprawling around the rural areas, mobility problems and infrastructure deficiencies, each one of them with the necessity of attention from the planning point of view. The objective of this research is to know in a qualitative way, whether the Master Plan has an orientation and how can this contribute to the construction of urban resilience. The methodolo- gy was developed in a previous research by Lemos (2010) and involved categories of sustainability and resilience, with the possible impacts of the actions described in the Plan. After the implementation of the methodology and the revision of the Plan, the results shown that the Plan is targeted to the resilience.

Abstract. The article discusses the emergence of a functional literacy construct and the rediscovery of illiteracy in industrialized countries during the second half of the 20th century. It offers a short explanation of how the construct evolved over time. In addition, it explores how functional (il)literacy is conceived differently by research discourses of cognitive and neural studies, on the one hand, and by prescriptive and normative international policy documents and adult education, on the other hand. Furthermore, it analyses how literacy skills surveys such as the Level One Study (leo.) or the PIAAC may help to bridge the gap between cognitive and more practical and educational approaches to literacy, the goal being to place the functional illiteracy (FI) construct within its existing scale levels. It also sheds more light on the way in which FI can be perceived in terms of different cognitive processes and underlying components of reading. By building on the previous work of other authors and previous definitions, the article brings together different views of FI and offers a perspective for a needed operational definition of the concept, which would be an appropriate reference point for future educational, political, and scientific utilization.

Place branding is a network of associations in the consumer’s mind, based on the visual, verbal, and behavioral expression of a place. Food can be an important tool to summarize it as it is part of the culture of a city and its symbolic capital. Food is imaginary, a ritual and a social construction. This paper aims to explore a ritual that has turned into one of the brands of Lisbon in the past few years. The fresh sardines barbecued out of doors, during Saint Anthony’s festival, has become a symbol that can be found on t-shirts, magnets and all kinds of souvenirs. Over the year, tourists can buy sardine shaped objects in very cheap stores to luxurious shops. There is even a whole boutique dedicated to the fish: “The Fantastic World of Portuguese Sardines” and an annual competition promoted by the city council to choose the five most emblematic designs of sardines. In order to analyze the Sardine phenomenon from a city branding point of view, the objective of this paper is to comprehend what associations are made by foreigners when they are outside of Lisbon. As a methodological procedure five design sardines, were used of last year to questioning to which city they relate them in interviews carried in Madrid, Lyon, Rome and London. Upon completion of the analysis, the results of the city branding strategy adopted by the city council to promote the sardines as the official symbol of Lisbon is seen as a Folkmarketing action. The effects are positive, but still quite local. On the other hand, significant participation of the Lisbon´s dwellers in the Sardine Contest was observed, which seems to be a good way to promote the city identity and pride in their best ambassador: the citizens.
