AbstractThis paper proposes using the tensile-fracture-inception-prevention (TFIP) limit state and ductility parameter/criterion for a safer fracture-resistant design of the tension members of steel structures. Finite element (FE) analysis revealed that the tensile band localization strain (TBLS) is significantly lower than the fracture strain currently employed as the structural steel elongation-based ductility parameter/criterion. The TBLS is thus, a safer fracture-resistant parameter/criterion than the fracture strain. FE analysis reveals that the TBLS at the center of tension specimens (mid-thickness and mid-width) is lower, and is thus a safer TFIP elongation-based ductility criteria/parameter than the TBLS at the surface of tension specimens.

Modelling the cyclic response of structural steel plays an important role in the design and performance assessment of steel structures. Up to date, several mathematical models were developed to simulate metal plasticity, but only some of them were implemented in Finite Element Method (FEM) based software packages such as Abaqus, by using incremental plasticity procedures. Within this article, the “built-in” combined isotropic/kinematic hardening model is used to model metal plasticity under cyclic loading regime. A brief description of the constitutive model together with the calibration procedure of the material parameters based on experimental data are presented. Finite element analyseswere carried out on simplified FEM models to provide numerical predictions using the calibrated material parameters. Since the “built-in” combined model has several limitations (especially related to the isotropic component), adjustments of the material parameters were made to accommodate to different loading histories. The chosen material model and the calibrated input parameters are validated byanalysing the FEM predictions to be in good agreement with the experimental results with respect to cyclic behaviour and failure mode.

Purpose – Since the use of advanced finite element analysis (FEA) in the design of steel structures has been increasing its popularity in order to avoid unsafe or highly conservative designs, a solid know-how in computer-aided design (CAD) and engineering (CAE) codes is necessary. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to provide an extensive review of useful guidelines concerning modelling, simulation and result validation for the accurate performance of those analyses. Design/methodology/approach – Such guidelines are obtained from international steel design codes like Eurocode 3 and DNV, publications from experienced CAE engineers and renowned FE software companies like Ansys and Altair. Topics like mesh independence, the effect of the load sequence on the load bearing capacity and steel fracture criteria are underlined. Findings – Since the use of advanced FEA in the design of steel structures is becoming more and more traditional due to the increase of its competitiveness when compared to the use of (very) conservative design rules, a solid know-how in CAD and CAE codes is necessary. Practical implications – This work will be quite useful for structural steel stress engineers, contributing for a safer use of FEA in research and design. VicRoads, the road authority for the state of Victoria, Australia, has been undertaking extensive research into the load capacity and performance of cast-in-place reinforced concrete flat slab bridges. One of the key objectives of this research is the development of analytical tools that can be used to better determine the performance of these bridges under loadings to the elastic limit and subsequently to failure. The 59-year-old Barr Creek Bridge, a flat slab bridge of four short continuous spans over column piers, was made available to VicRoads in aid of this research. The static testing program executed on this bridge was therefore aimed at providing a comprehensive set of measurements of its response to serviceability level loadings and beyond. This test program was preceded by the performance of a dynamic test (a simplified experimental modal analysis using vehicular excitation) to establish basic structural properties of the bridge (effective flexural rigidity, EI) and the influence of the abutment supports from identification of its dynamic modal characteristics. The dynamic test results enabled a reliably tuned finite element model of the bridge in its in-service condition to be produced for use in conjunction with the static testing program. The results of the static testing program compared well with finite element modeling predictions in both the elastic range (serviceability loadings) and the nonlinear range (load levels taken to incipient collapse). Observed collapse failure modes and corresponding collapse load levels were also found to be predicted well using yield line theory.

Nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) structures is characterized by numerous modeling options and input parameters. To accurately model the nonlinear RC behavior involving concrete cracking in tension and crushing in compression, practitioners make different choices regarding the critical modeling issues, e.g., defining the concrete constitutive relations, assigning the bond between the concrete and the steel reinforcement, and solving problems related to convergence difficulties and mesh sensitivities. Thus, it is imperative to review the common modeling choices critically and develop a robust modeling strategy with consistency, reliability, and comparability. This paper proposes a modeling strategy and practical recommendations for the nonlinear FE analysis of RC structures based on parametric studies of critical modeling choices. The proposed modeling strategy aims at providing reliable predictions of flexural responses of RC members with a focus on concrete cracking behavior and crushing failure, which serve as the foundation for more complex modeling cases, e.g., RC beams bonded with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminates. Additionally, herein, the implementation procedure for the proposed modeling strategy is comprehensively described with a focus on the critical modeling issues for RC structures. The proposed strategy is demonstrated through FE analyses of RC beams tested in four-point bending—one RC beam as reference and one beam externally bonded with a carbon-FRP (CFRP) laminate in its soffit. The simulated results agree well with experimental measurements regarding load-deformation relationship, cracking, flexural failure due to concrete crushing, and CFRP debonding initiated by intermediate cracks. The modeling strategy and recommendations presented herein are applicable to the nonlinear FE analysis of RC structures in general.

Corrugated steel plate and surrounding soils are working together to share the load in buried corrugated steel structures. It is complicated to consider the structure-soil interaction, so the finite element method has already become the chief means of complicated structure analysis. Based on a practical project, considering structure-soil interaction, by using the finite element program of ANSYS, the paper set up a 2-D FE model and analyzed the soil pressure, the structural deformation and the internal force under different load conditions in detail. The analysis shows that structure-soil interaction has brought about stresses redistribution of surrounding soils, and adverse effects of soil pressure and displacement were limited. The variation range of soil pressure on the crown of arch increases with the load increases and the peak value of soil pressure approach to the code value and a rebound appears in the vehicle load range. The tendencies of vertical soil displacement are nearly the same to different load conditions, and the peak value of moments has an obvious change and can be influenced greatly by deflective load.

High strength steel sections have been increasingly used in buildings and bridges, and steel angles have also been widely used in many steel structures, especially in transmission towers and long span trusses. However, high strength steel exhibits mechanical properties that are quite different from ordinary strength steel, and hence, the local buckling behavior of steel equal angle members under axial compression varies with the steel strength. However, there is a lack of research on the relationship of the local buckling behavior of steel equal angle members under axial compression with the steel strength. A finite element model is developed in this paper to analyze the local buckling behavior of steel equal angle members under axial compression, and study its relationship with the steel strength and the width-to-thickness ratio of the angle leg. The finite element analysis (FEA) results are compared with the corresponding design method in the American code AISC 360-05, which provides a reference for the related design.

This paper describes a methodology of design and analysis of viscoelastic seismic dampers by means of the time domain finite element analysis. The viscoelastic constitutive relation of material incorporating with the fractional calculus has been derived and the finite element formulation based on the constitutive relation has been developed to analyze the dynamic property of seismic damper. A time domain computer program was developed by using the formulation. Dynamic properties of hysteresis loop, damping capacity, equivalent viscous damping coefficient, and equivalent spring constant are calculated and compared with the experimental results. Remarkable correlation between the FE analysis and the experiment is gained, and consequently the design procedure with the help of the FE analysis has been established.

In the present paper, a numerical approach to model the layer-by-layer construction of cured material during the Additive Manufacturing (AM) process is proposed. The method is developed by a recursive mechanical finite element (FE) analysis and takes into account forces and pressures acting on the cured material during the process, in order to simulate the behavior and investigate the failure condition sources, which lead to defects in the final part geometry. The study is focused on the evaluation of the process capability Stereolithography (SLA), to build parts with challenging features in meso-micro scale without supports. Two test cases, a cantilever part and a bridge shape component, have been considered in order to evaluate the potentiality of the approach. Numerical models have been tuned by experimental test. The simulations are validated considering two test cases and briefly compared to the printed samples. Results show the potential of the approach adopted but also the difficulties on simulation settings.
