AbstractTrade in agricultural products is one of the most dynamically developing segments of the global market. The feature of the contemporary stage of world food trade development is that the leading exporters are also the largest food importers, combining the benefits of the international division of labor with the development of domestic agricultural production. In the paper, the role of foreign trade in ensuring food security has been evaluated by comparing the global index of food security and the share of imported food in the domestic market. As a result, the countries of the world have been divided into 4 groups. The first two groups include countries that ensure their citizens a high level of food security through imports, as well as or through their own efficient agricultural production. The third and fourth groups include countries which are not agrarian developed. The problems of hunger and malnutrition in these countries can potentially be solved with the help of foreign trade and increased efforts of the international community.

Today one of the most pressing global problems is the problem of hunger and malnutrition, the solution of which is directly related to ensuring food security. In the context of increasing economic integration, international trade is the most important tool for ensuring food security. Food trade is one of the most steadily developing segments of the global market. Today, the leading exporters are also the largest importers of food, wisely combining the benefits of international economic integration and the principle of developing domestic agricultural production. The role of international trade in ensuring food security was assessed by comparing the global food security index and the value of net food exports, which made it possible to develop a typology of countries. The first two groups include countries that provide their citizens with a high level of food security through domestic efficient agricultural production or through imports. The third and fourth groups include agricultural underdeveloped countries, where the problem of hunger and malnutrition can potentially be solved through international trade and increased efforts of the international community.

China has worked to ensure future food self-sufficiency, but still depends on the imports of many kinds of agricultural products. Imports grow as domestic demand is restructured in favor of qualitative food products of high nutrient value amid the progressive degradation of agricultural lands, and shrinking possibilities for agricultural production. Currently, the majority of such value-added food products is imported from the USA. By raising import tariffs in response to the recent US protectionist policies, China may face a situation of food insecurity. This chapter reviews the recent tendencies in China's foreign trade in food and agricultural products, analyses food security status of China on major kinds of agricultural commodities, discusses current US-China trade relations and reorientation of China's foreign trade in food and agricultural products, and provides possible solutions to the improvement of food security by means of intensification of domestic agricultural production and diversification of imports.

As part of the study of agricultural production, as one of the leading export-oriented sectors of the US economy, the dynamics of foreign trade in American agricultural products, which is objectively recognizable in the categorical and economic evolution of spatial patterns, is considered. The latter are considered in the context of the global regional structure of agricultural exports and imports of the United States in 1946–2019 and the features of stimulating the export of American agricultural products in the context of the main regions and countries of the world for the same period of time. Based on the synthesis of historical/evolutionary and spatial approaches, methodologically filled with methods of abstract-logical and statistical-economic analysis of official American statistics, the provisions on geo-economic conjuncture, expansionism and protectionism of US foreign trade in the world/global agricultural market are empirically proved.

Food security is challenged by the growth of the world population, intensification of agricultural production, depletion of scarce agricultural and environmental resources, and the consequent introduction of innovations to farming processes, one of which is land management. In this chapter, the authors discuss the role of innovative aspects and practices of land management in the establishment of food security and the provision of rational, sound, and effective administration of scarce land resources. In the case of Russia and other countries, the authors justify the necessity of rational land management focused on the innovative way of development of agricultural production.

Despite its numerous resources, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the poorest countries in the world. The DRC also has underutilised resources of arable land and good conditions for agricultural production. This study analysed changes in the volume of foreign trade in the DRC and assessed the share of its agricultural exports in the years 2015-2019. The analysis covered the volume of total imports and exports, as well as imports and exports by sector. The foreign trade balance and the dynamics of change in the years under analysis were calculated. Structural indicators as well as fixed and variable-based dynamic indices were used. As a result of the conducted research, fluctuations in the export of all goods were found along with a decrease in the export of numerous significant agriculturally produced goods: rubber, palm oil and medicinal plants.
