Abstract Phenolic compounds are widespread in berries and determine their antimicrobial activity. The aim of our study was to establish the amounts of phenolic compounds and the anthocyanin composition in berries of four Ribes species, and to evaluate the effect of berry extracts on the growth of common Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and also yeasts isolated from food processing plants. The phenolic content and anthocyanin composition were estimated spectrometrically and by HPLC, respectively. The highest amount of phenolic compounds, and also anthocyanins, was found in extracts of R. aureum ‘Corona’. The anthocyanin content was the lowest in berries of R. aureum Au Gs-5, with equal amounts of delphinidins and cyanidins. Delphinidins were predominant (68.6%) in berries of R. nigrum ‘Ben Tirran’, while cyanidins dominated in R. uva-crispa. The berry extracts of R. aureum Au Gs-5 and R. uva-crispa ‘Lûðiai’ had the largest growth-suppressing effect on yeasts and most of the bacteria tested. All of the berry extracts suppressed the growth of pathogenic and conditionally pathogenic bacteria. The industrially important Lactococcus lactis was the most resistant to the Ribes berry extracts. There was no correlation between the amount of anthocyanins in the extracts and their antimicrobial properties. Extracts with a lower anthocyanin–to-phenolics ratio more effectively inhibited the growth of bacteria.

Medicinal plants produce great groups of secondary metabolites which are essential for medicine purpose, one of them phenolic compounds, antimicrobial activity of phenolic compounds which derivative from plants has been examined for several years. The phenolic extracts of Sesamum indicum and Pimpinella anisum seeds have antibacterial action against Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli), (Acinetobacter baumannii), and (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) (Proteus mirabilis). The current findings show that the synergistic impact of phenolic extracts from S. indicum and P. anisum is active against a variety of pathogenic bacteria, and that the synergistic effect for two plants is more antibacterial than phenolic extracts from one plant.  The results indicated Gram- negative (P. aeruginosa) more effected by plants, than Gram-negative (S. aureus) which have the lower effects. The results of HPLC indicated Sesame (S. indicum) have total concentration of phenolic compounds was (1313.7 µg/ml) higher than total concentration of phenolic compounds of Anise (P. anisum) (220.991 µg/ml), and have varied types of phenolic compounds were Pyrogallol, Gallic acid, Rutin, Kaempferol, Cinnamaldehyde, Qurctin, Eugenol, Lignan with different concentration. From this study may be conclusion Synergistic effect for two plants have more antibacterial than phenolic extracts of one plant, and Sesame (S. indicum) have higher antimicrobial activity than Anise (P. anisum).

The present study aimed to produce bio-active packaging materials made of whey proteins (WPs) and essential oil (EO) extracted from Thymbra (Satureja capitata, L.), one of the most popular Palestinian wild plants. In this study, two different Thymbra leaves from Nablus and Qabatiya in Palestine were collected and analyzed for EOs by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Based on the analysis, two EOs, namely, TEO1 and TEO2, were extracted, and it was found that both samples primarily contain γ-terpinene and carvacrol, whereas p-cymene was detected only in TEO1. The antimicrobial activity of TEO1 and TEO2 was evaluated by microbroth microdilution assays against pathogenic bacteria and yeast. Based on the results, TEO1 exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against the test strains. Besides, TEO1 was chosen to functionalize WP-based films at different concentrations (0.1%, 0.4%, and 0.8% v/v of Film Forming Solutions). Film mechanical property investigation showed a marked reduction in the tensile strength and Young’s modulus at 0.8% TEO1. In contrast, its elongation at break value was significantly (p < 0.05) increased due to the plasticizing effect of the EO. Moreover, the film transparency was found to be significantly (p < 0.05) reduced by increasing TEO1 concentrations. Finally, microbiological investigations indicated that film antimicrobial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria increased dose-dependently. The overall results open interesting perspectives for employing these films as preservative materials in food packaging.

The effect of ionized aqueous solutions (anolytes and catholyte) in the processing of fruits (cherries, morellos, and strawberries) for decontamination has been tested. Freshly prepared analytes and catholyte without the addition of salts were used, as well as stored for 7 months anolytes, prepared with 0.5% NaCl and a combination of 0.5% NaCl and 0.5% Na2CO3. The anolyte prepared with a combination of 0.5% NaCl and 0.5% Na2CO3, as well as the anolyte obtained with 0.5% NaCl, exhibit high antimicrobial activity against the surface microflora of strawberries, cherries, and sour cherries. They inactivate E. coli for 15 minutes. The other species of the fam. Enterobacteriaceae were also affected to the maximum extent, as is the total number of microorganisms, especially in cherries and sour cherries. Even stored for 7 months, they largely retain their antimicrobial properties. Anolyte and catholyte, obtained without the addition of salts, showed a lower effect on the total number of microorganisms, but had a significant effect on Gram-negative bacteria, and especially with regard to the sanitary indicative E. coli.

This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of two methods (agitation and ultra-sound) for extracting phenolic compounds from 15 native plants. Plant species collected in the Dehesa of Extremadura were used. The antioxidant, antihypertensive and antimicrobial activity of the phenolic extracts was investigated. Significantly different results were obtained when comparing the two extraction methods, with the highest concentrations of phenolic compounds found for ultrasound extraction. In addition, the extracts obtained for Cistus albidus, Cistus salviifolius, Rubus ulmifolius and Quercus ilex showed the highest concentrations of phenolic compounds. The antioxidant activity was higher in the extracts of Cistus and Q. ilex obtained by ultrasound, as was the antihypertensive activity. Antimicrobial activity was also higher in the extracts obtained by ultrasound from C. salviifolius and Q. ilex plants against bacteria and from Cistus ladanifer against yeasts. Therefore, it can be concluded that, with the ultrasound extraction of phenolic compounds from C. ladanifer, C. albidus and Q. ilex plants, it is possible to obtain extracts with important functional properties, so they could be studied for their use in food with the aim of obtaining healthy and safe products, favouring the sustainability of the environment of the Dehesa Extremeña.

Roselle contains high phenolic compounds, mainly anthocyanins that are not stable with pH, metal ions, light exposure, temperature, oxygen, and enzymatic activity. The stability of phenolic compounds can be improved by nanoencapsulation. This research was aimed to evaluate the effect of inulin, inulin-chitosan and inulin-chitosan-maltodextrin with varying concentrations as encapsulants towards the physicochemical properties and encapsulation efficiency of nanocapsules product by spray drying. Roselle extract nanocapsules were prepared using various types and concentrations of encapsulants (inulin, inulin-chitosan and inulin-chitosan-maltodextrin). The solubility of nanocapsules ranged from 69.31 - 83.2%, while the hygroscopicity of nanocapsules was varied, approximately 17.89 - 23.79%. Nanocapsules moisture content was approximately 2.83 - 4.27%, while the total phenolic content of nanocapsules ranged from 6.74 - 13.41 mg GAE/g DW. The total anthocyanin of roselle extract nanocapsules was approximately 2.25 - 4.82 mg/g DW. The encapsulation efficiency of phenolic compounds in this study were approximately 60.31 - 77.13%. Nanocapsules with inulin-chitosan-maltodextrin (2.4%-2.4%-0.2%) had good properties of nanocapsules such as good solubility, high total phenolic content and total anthocyanin content. Nanocapsules with 5% inulin and inulinchitosan-maltodextrin (2.4%-2.4%-0.2%) had particle size of 641.4 and 411.1 nm respectively. The nanocapsules had a spherical shape, smooth surfaces but also a few had indentations.

The present study was carried out to establish the antioxidant capacity of plant material of Cornus stolonifera (syn. Cornus sericea, Red Osier Dogwood) grown in Manitoba, by measuring total phenolic content and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) over a 3-yr period. The presence and concentrations of flavonoids that might account for antioxidant abilities were investigated using ultra-performance liquid chromatography and a total anthocyanins assay. Both ORAC levels and phenolic content increased during the spring, peaked during the summer months (1631.65±166.30 µmol trolox equivalents g−1DW in July 2011, 220.38±2.29 mg gallic acid equivalents g−1DW in August 2012), and then declined during the fall in all 3 yr. Analysis of individual flavonoids in 2010 samples revealed that high levels of rutin, a glycoside of quercetin, were present ranging from 7.46±0.09 (July 2010) to 18.77±0.23 mg g−1dried sample (October 2010). Anthocyanin content was high in the spring, very low in the summer months, and increased in the fall over all 3 yr. Although polyphenolic and antioxidant content in Cornus spp. plants have been largely attributed to their berries, results from this study demonstrate that other plant material may also be an abundant source of these compounds.

Abstract Calophyllum brasiliense (Clusiaceae/Guttiferae) is a native Brazilian medicinal plant traditionally used against several diseases, including infectious pathologies. Crude methanolic extracts (CME) and two fractions, denoted non-polar (soluble in chloroform) and polar (nonsoluble in chloroform), were prepared from different parts of the plant (roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits) and studied. The following compounds were isolated and tested against pathogenic bacteria and yeasts by determination of the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC): brasiliensic acid (1), gallic acid (2), epicatechin (3), protocatechuic acid (4), friedelin (5) and 1,5-dihydroxyxanthone (6). The results indicated that all the parts of the plant exhibited antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, which are selectively inhibited by components of C. brasiliense. No activity was observed against Gram-negative bacteria and yeasts tested. Regarding the isolated compounds, substance 4 showed antimicrobial activity against all the tested microorganisms, whereas compound 6 exhibited antimicrobial activity only against Gram-positive bacteria. The results from the current study confirm and justify the popular use of this plant to treat infectious processes.

Abstract Recently, natural products have been evaluated as a source of antimicrobial agent with efficacies against a variety of microorganisms. The antibacterial activities of the oak fruit,inner husk of oak fruit (Jaft), and Jaftex mouthwash have been studiedin several studies. Thisstudy aimedto review the studies ofthe effects of antibacterial properties of the oak fruit, oak fruit hull (Jaft), and Jaftex mouthwash. Materials and Methods In this review study, relevant articles related to the antimicrobial activity of the oak fruit, inner husk of oak fruit (Jaft), and 'Jaftex mouthwash' were searched from the current digital literature using electronic databases namely, SID, ScienceDirect, PubMed, Google Scholar, Magiran, Web of Science employing the same keywords from 1990 to 2019. Results Oakfruit, inner husk of oak fruit (Jaft), and Jaftex mouthwash have antimicrobial properties against many microorganisms. Discussion and Conclusion Antibacterial properties of oak fruit, inner husk ofoak fruit (Jaft) can be used to reverse the antibiotic sensitivity against pathogenic bacteria. Jaftex is recommended as an antibacterial and anti-plaque mouthwash.

India is found to be a country with rich biodiversity and enormous treasure of herbal plants and consequently called as medicinal garden of the world. Plants are the richest source of natural antimicrobial agents. In recent years drug resistance to human pathogenic bacteria has been commonly reported from all over the world. Therefore, there is a need to develop alternative antimicrobial drugs for the treatment of infectious diseases; one approach is to screen local medicinal plants for possible antimicrobial properties. The present study was designed to evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of hexane, chloroform and methanol crude extracts of the leaves of three important medicinal plants viz., Biophytum sensitivum (L.) DC, Bougainvillea spectabilis L. and Caesalpinia bonducella (L.) Fleming, collected from in and around Visakhapatnam District. The antimicrobial activity of the crude extracts was tested against three Gram Positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis MTCC 441, Enterococcus faecalis MTCC 439, Staphylococcus aureus MTCC 737), Three Gram Negative bacteria (Escherichia coli MTCC 443, Proteus vulgaris MTCC 426 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa MTCC 1688) and three Fungal strains (Candida albicans MTCC 227, Epidermophyton floccosum MTCC 613 and Trichophyton mentagrophytes MTCC 7687) using agar well diffusion assay. Our results demonstrated that methanol extracts of these plants leaves have concentration dependent antibacterial activity against some of the tested organisms. Further studies should be undertaken to elucidate the exact mechanism of action of antimicrobial effect to identify the active ingredients which can be used for drug development program.

Infections caused by bacteria resistant to antibiotics are an increasing problem. Multivalent antibiotics could be a solution. In the present study, a covalent conjugate between Ciprofloxacin and a G0-PAMAM dendrimer has been synthesized and tested against clinically relevant Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The conjugate has antimicrobial activity and there is a positive dendritic effect compared to Ciprofloxacin itself.
