Abstract Carrying out studies on the impact of the development of tourism in a community allows to have information about the positive or negative perception in the economic, sociocultural and environmental aspects that are part of their environment. The present empirical research was developed in situ on the Santay Island Ramsar site and protected area located in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Using a questionnaire, the perception of the Community in the face of tourism development was analysed, evidencing that the positive aspects most valued by the commune were “The inhabitants of the island feel more pride for belonging to it” (sociocultural aspect), “Improvement of access roads to the Island” (environmental aspect), “Improvement of quality of life “(sociocultural aspect),” Improves the quality of service in restaurants, shops and cabins in the area “(sociocultural aspect) and” Contribution to improve the standard of living “(economic aspect). The benefits derived from tourism development (positive aspects) outnumber and score the costs (negative aspects), so the community is in favour of tourism development. The general satisfaction of the commune with the tourism development in Isla Santay is considered a high. The variables that show a significant and positive correlation in community satisfaction with tourism development are the “Improvement of investments, more development and more infrastructure”.

AbstractBack in the early 1980s, coal deposits occurring at depths of ~700 m below surface were already regarded as large-depth deposits. Meanwhile, today the borderline depth of large-depth mining has extended to >1,000 m. Design, excavation and maintenance of mining roadways at the depth of >1,000 m have, therefore, become crucial issues in a practical perspective in recent years. Hence, it is now extremely important to intensify research studies on the influence of large depths on the behaviour of rock mass and deformation of support in underground excavations. The paper presents the results of the study carried out in five mining excavations at depths ranging from 950 to 1,290 m, where monitoring stations with measurement equipment were built. The analysis of data from laboratory and coal mine tests, as well as in situ monitoring, helped to formulate a set of criteria for stability assessment of underground excavations situated at large depths. The proposed methodology of load and deformation prediction in support systems of the excavations unaffected by exploitation is based on the criteria referring to the depth of excavation and the quality of rock mass. The depth parameter is determined by checking whether the analysed excavation lies below the critical depth, whereas the rock mass quality is determined on the basis of the roof lithology index (WL) and the crack intensity factor (n)

A acessibilidade, infraestrutura e atrativos do parque foram observados in loco. Participantes tinham alta escolaridade e visitavam frequentemente outras UCs. State Park of Serra do Conduru: profile, perceptions and suggestions of visitors ABSTRACT Conservation Units (CUs) collaborate with biodiversity preservation, water resources maintenance and climate change mitigation. They also provide opportunities for pleasant experiences in contact with nature. In the present study, we analyzed the profile and perceptions of the visitors of the State Park of Serra do Conduru (SPSC), as well as the accessibility to the park, the quality of the infrastructure, and the main elements that attract people to visit this South Bahia CU. Using a mixed methodology, we registered visitors’ profile and perception through a questionnaire filled in by 35 visitors. The accessibility, infrastructure, and elements that attract visitors to the park were observed in situ. Participants were well-educated and reported frequently visiting other CUs. According to our results, participants were aware of the fact that they were visiting a protected area, and this was one of their motivations for their visit. This result supports the idea that CUs can appeal to a specific audience. In addition, the opinions of relatives and friends about this specific CU, together with information gathered through the Internet were essential when choosing to visit the park. Thus, using social networks to promote the park and improving the park’s website could help to increase the number of visitors. The quality of the service seems to have guaranteed satisfaction of visitors, despite the low variety of attractions. In sum, our results point out that small actions aimed at signaling and providing information can improve access and leisure experience in the park. By observing the infrastructure and the number of participants who have accommodated in the SPSC we realize that the accommodation is a strong point which could be better utilized. 33 suggestions were provided by participants about improvements in infrastructure, attractiveness, signaling, divulgation, access, environmental education and fundraising and can assist the management of SPSC and other Brazilian CUs. The visitors’ suggestions mainly show their desire for a greater variety of attractions and leisure opportunities in the park. This research is applied research, which seeks to encourage research to develop and manage destinations with the concept of sustainable tourism development (STD). STD is a concept that integrates the four pillars of tourism destination governance. This concept has been stated in the Regulation of the Minister of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia Number 14 of 2016. The STD concept consists of four variables, among others; a) the implementation of effective management that is integrated and sustainable, b) strengthening the impact and economic benefits for local communities, c) strengthening and preserving socio-cultural, and d) paying attention to environmental sustainability around tourist destinations. This research aims to apply the STD concept for the development of tourism village potential. Specifically, this research is intended to encourage tourism village potentials in Sei Bingai and Tanjung Pura Districts, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra Province. So that in the end, it is hoped that Langkat Regency can have a well-managed tourist village based on the STD concept. The results showed that, based on the results of Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) using AMOS 22 software, it was found that the existing variables were indeed relevant for analyzing the application of sustainable tourism development. Furthermore, based on the scoring carried out in the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) activities with key stakeholders, a ranking is carried out. Of the four existing aspects, the environmental aspect is in the good category (based on the excellent, good, average, and poor categories), while the sustainable integrated management variable, the variable economic benefits for the surrounding community, and the environmental conservation variable are in the good category. The results of the FGD also concluded that the majority of key stakeholders agreed that in Rumah Galuh Village and Pematang Serai Village, Langkat Regency would continue to be developed into a tourist village with a sustainable tourism development model.

BACKGROUND: Tourism development can have a positive or negative impact on the lives of local communities. AIM: This systematic review aims to determine the impact of tourism on the quality of life (QoL) of people in tourist destination areas. METHODS: The search was conducted on the Science Direct database, Taylor Francis, EBSCO Host, Wiley Online Library, and Google Scholar. The keywords used were “residents’ QoL” AND impacts of tourism. Inclusion criteria were articles that focus on the QoL of people in tourist destination areas, published from 2015 to 2019 in peer-reviewed journals, in English. Articles were excluded if they were qualitative studies, literature reviews, and if full papers were unavailable. The review was conducted on 18 articles selected from 673 articles obtained in the initial search. RESULTS: Tourism has an impact on the QoL of local communities. In general, the domains that are perceived as being positively affected are the improvement of the economy, employment opportunities, community pride, cultural exchanges, and increased facilities availability. Meanwhile, the domains that are negatively affected in most of the studies are health, safety, quality of the physical environment, cost of living, accessibility to public facilities, and social relations. Apart from that, there is also dissatisfaction with the types of jobs available and the low level of community involvement in tourism development. CONCLUSIONS: Tourism can have both positive and negative impacts on the QoL of local communities. Efforts to minimize the negative impacts of tourism should be undertaken to improve community support for tourism development.

The drastically increasing availability of low-cost sensors for environmental monitoring has fostered a large interest in the literature. One particular challenge for such devices is the fast degradation over time of the quality of their data. Therefore, the instruments require frequent calibrations. Traditionally, this operation is carried out on each sensor in dedicated laboratories. This is not economically sustainable for dense networks of low-cost sensors. An alternative that has been investigated is in situ calibration: exploiting the properties of the sensor network, the instruments are calibrated while staying in the field and preferably without any physical intervention. The literature indicates there is wide variety of in situ calibration strategies depending on the type of sensor network deployed. However, there is a lack for a systematic benchmark of calibration algorithms. In this paper, we propose the first framework for the simulation of sensor networks enabling a systematic comparison of in situ calibration strategies with reproducibility, and scalability. We showcase it on a primary test case applied to several calibration strategies for blind and static sensor networks. The performances of calibration are shown to be tightly related to the deployment of the network itself, the parameters of the algorithm and the metrics used to evaluate the results. We study the impact of the main modelling choices and adjustments of parameters in our framework and highlight their influence on the results of the calibration algorithms. We also show how our framework can be used as a tool for the design of a network of low-cost sensors.
