Hygienisation of Surplus Activated Sludge by Hydrodynamic CavitationThe success of an effective process of disintegration is the application of physical or chemical methods of the destruction of the cell wall which consequently becomes fragmented and the intracellular matters are released into the surrounding liquid. The purpose of the conducted experiments was to demonstrate possibilities of application of the hydrodynamic in the bacteriological hygienisation of surplus activated sludge. The confirmation of the effectiveness of the bactericidal activity of hydrodynamic cavitation was the number of bacteria grown on agars before and after hygienisation process. Selective and basic beddings have been used in the research. The bacterial culture has lasted approximately 24 to 48 hours. After the period of incubation the colonies produced have been counted and initially identified. Based on the microbiological analyses a significant reduction in an overall number of bacteria and pathogenic bacteria belonging to the familyEnterobacteriaceaeand to the pathogenic speciesStaphylococcushas been noticed. The overall number of bacteria decrease about 80% after 45 minutes of disintegration of surplus activated sludge. Pathogenic bacteria belonging to the familyEnterobacteriaceae: lactose-positive and lactose-negative decrease about 93% and 92%, respectively. Reducing the number ofSalmonellabacteria was 100% after 45 minutes of disintegration processes. Reduction bacteria of speciesStaphylococcuswere about 93% for mannitolo-positive and 92% for mannitolo-negative.

Abstract The presence of pathogenic microorganisms in sewage sludge is one of the crucial factors affecting their use in agriculture and in nature. An appropriate method of sludge hygienization can contribute to the reduction of the presence of pathogenic microbes in the sludge or to their complete elimination. This study presents the possibility of using dry ice in the hygienization of surplus activated sludge. The scope of survey covered microbiological as well as physiochemical analyses of the sludge. The microbiological analyses conducted show the hygienization effect of dry ice on surplus activated sludge such as the reduction of the total number of bacteria as well as of pathogenic bacteria. In the case of sludge to dry ice 1:1 voluminal ratio, the total number of bacteria has been reduced by 76%, the number of Salmonella sp. rods by 90%, and Clostridium perfringens by 85%. The results of physiochemical analyses confirmed the destructive effect that dry ice has over microorganisms. The disintegration of microbes by means of dry ice contributed to the increase of supernatant liquid turbidity and to the release of organic matter. For the sludge to dry ice 1:1 voluminal ratio, an increase in turbidity of supernatant liquid by 320 mg SiO2 dm-3 has been proven, as well as an increase in the value of CODCr by 549 mg O2 dm-3, which indicates the release of organic matter into the liquid phase.

The microbial community surrounding fish eyed eggs can harbor pathogenic bacteria. In this study we focused on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) eyed eggs and the potential of bacteriophages against the pathogenic bacteria Flavobacterium psychrophilum and F. columnare. An infection bath method was first established, and the effects of singular phages on fish eggs was assessed (survival of eyed eggs, interaction of phages with eyed eggs). Subsequently, bacteria-challenged eyed eggs were exposed to phages to evaluate their effects in controlling the bacterial population. Culture-based methods were used to enumerate the number of bacteria and/or phages associated with eyed eggs and in the surrounding environment. The results of the study showed that, with our infection model, it was possible to re-isolate F. psychrophilum associated with eyed eggs after the infection procedure, without affecting the survival of the eggs in the short term. However, this was not possible for F. columnare, as this bacterium grows at higher temperatures than the ones recommended for incubation of rainbow trout eyed eggs. Bacteriophages do not appear to negatively affect the survival of rainbow trout eyed eggs and they do not seem to strongly adhere to the surface of eyed eggs either. Finally, the results demonstrated a strong potential for short term (24 h) phage control of F. psychrophilum. However, further studies are needed to explore if phage control can be maintained for a longer period and to further elucidate the mechanisms of interactions between Flavobacteria and their phages in association with fish eggs.

Abstract Background Computerisation of various processes in hospitals and reliance on electronic devices raises the concern of contamination of these devices from the patient environment. We undertook this study to determine if an attached hand hygiene device that unlocks the screen of a computer on wheels (COW) on usage can be effective in decreasing the microbiological burden on computer keyboards. Methods An electronic hand sanitizer was integrated onto the COW. A prospective cohort study with a crossover design involving 2 control and 2 intervention wards was used. The study end point was the number of colony forming units found on the keyboards. Bacteria were classified into 4 main groups; pathogenic, skin flora, from the environment or those thought to be commensals in healthy individuals. We then used a mixed effects model for the statistical analysis to determine if there were any differences before and after the intervention. Results Thirty-nine keyboards were swabbed at baseline, day 7 and 14, with 234 keyboards cultured, colony forming units (CFUs) counted and organisms isolated. By mixed model analysis, the difference of mean bacteria count between intervention and control for week 1 was 32.74 (− 32.74, CI − 94.29 to 28.75, p = 0.29), for week 2 by 155.86 (− 155.86, CI − 227.45 to − 83.53, p < 0.0001), and after the 2-week period by 157.04 (− 157.04, CI − 231.53 to − 82.67, p < 0.0001). In the sub-analysis, there were significant differences of pathogenic bacteria counts for the Intervention as compared to the Control in contrast with commensal counts. Conclusion A hand hygiene device attached to a COW may be effective in decreasing the microbiological burden on computer keyboards.

Lactobacillus acidophilus - homofermentative lactobacillus, specializing in living in the gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts of mammals and birds. It accompanies a person from birth and throughout his life, providing a whole range of useful services, the main one of which is active participation in the body's defense system against the harmful action of undesirable microorganisms (preventing the growth of pathogenic bacteria and restraining populations of opportunistic microbes at a safe level) . It is this property of the acidophilus rod that explains its wide practical use in various probiotic products and preparations of dietary, medical and agricultural purposes.
Although the acidophilus rod is known and purposefully used for a long time, it still ha the great potential for the research. The use of gene-molecular approaches has made it possible to clarify the systematic position of L. acidophilus in the family of lactobacilli and to identify a group of closely related species, often indistinguishable by traditional physiological and biochemical identification methods. Today, the efforts of researchers are focused on elucidating the molecular mechanisms by which antagonistically active strains of L. acidophilus carry out a bactericidal and bacteriolytic effect on harmful microbes. Disclosure of these mechanisms will not only allow more efficient selection and use of strains of L. acidophilus, but also create a new class of antibiotics that are more effective and have less side effects than existing ones.
This review is devoted to the description of the probiotic microorganism Lactobacillus acidophilus. In the article the biological and ecological properties of the acidophilus rod are described in detail, examples of practical use of this microorganism in various branches of the national economy are given.
