Whether for 21st century skills development such as creativity, communication, and collaboration orfor transdisciplinary knowledge creation leading to innovation, the integration of Arts with STEM (Science,Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields is gaining popularity in higher education. However, a comprehensive survey of proven methodologies to integrate Arts with STEM disciplines (referred to as STEAM) currently does not exist. This paper presents the preliminary results of asystematized literature review done to characterize the integration of arts with STEM disciplines in higher education. It also uses these findings to analyze the most recent STEAM initiative of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ottawa. This research finds three main rationales to integrate arts with STEM and presents the frameworks discussed in the literature to do this integration. It also examines how creativity is assessed and developed within STEAM higher education contexts. This research contributes a reference of validated arts integration and creativity frameworks which can be used to setup STEAM projects or evaluate them in relation to proven methodologies. The frameworks presented in this research can be used in classrooms and professional environments.

AbstractSeneSTEM aims to bring Senegalese children and young people into contact with science, and – by extension – with the STEM disciplines (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) in a very accessible and illustrative way. We do this with concrete workshops and experiments, for both teachers and for groups of children and young people. In collaboration with different educational organisations in Senegal, among which the Senegalese Association for the Promotion of Astronomy, SeneSTEM ensures that all layers of the population are enthusiastic about science (education). Special attention is given to motivating girls for scientific careers. SeneSTEM actions are based on an international collaboration partly supported by development funds from the city of Antwerp and the University of Antwerp (Belgium).

Purpose This study aims to examine the extant literature to analyze the relationship between quality assurance (QA) and innovation in the higher education context. Design/methodology/approach This study selected 63 articles through a systematic literature review in Scopus and Web of Science databases and performed a descriptive and thematic synthesis-analysis on the sample. Findings The research identifies several perspectives discussed on QA systems covering experiences, criticisms and practice implications. The literature review shows there is no clear consensus on whether innovation in higher education institutions (HEIs) is fostered or hindered by QA processes. However, it seems that the likelihood of innovativeness and positive QA outcomes are directly linked to how these processes are managed in universities. Research limitations/implications This review highlights the university management concerns that emerge with QA issues as it is not yet clear to what extent innovation is actually promoted in scenarios where QA is applied. Hence, this literature review could be considered comprehensive but not exhaustive. Further studies are recommended to improve the understanding of how HEIs can both innovate and ensure quality at the same time. Originality/value The paper contributes to the existing body of knowledge by advancing the opportunities and challenges that HEIs face due to QA system features.

The study aimed at investigating the attitudes of university students towards science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) approach. The participants of the study consist of (60) students who were studying in bachelor and master degree, they trained in the center of training at the university, the participants acquiring the skills of STEM approach by using the WeDo2.0 application, they received knowledge and skills of STEM approach. The tool of the study was questionnaire which was validity and reliability verified. Results of the study showed that positive student attitudes toward using STEM approach Reached 86.4%. Each of the following scores is ranked as descending order: desire to apply strategy (87.4 %%), collaboration and communication (86.4%), thinking and problem solving (86%), motivation and problem solving (86%). There was no statistical significance difference between the variable type degree of study (master/bachelor) as well as the nature of employment in terms of whether the learner was either an employee or non-employee. In light of results of the study, researchers recommend using STEM approach in teaching courses in open learning systems.

In 1976, the challenges faced by women of color who pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields were first brought to national attention. Forty-two years later, the authors re-examine the challenges, barriers, and successes of women of color in STEM higher education. This chapter examines the landscape of the STEM professoriate through a literature review (journals, trade magazines, theses, and dissertations) and reflective shorts and quotes from women of color navigating the STEM professoriate. The literature review spans a 10-year period (2008-2018). Both the review and the reflections focus on the areas of STEM belonging, self-presentation, stereotyping, institutional racism, discrimination, and tokenism as challenges faced by women of color in the STEM professoriate. Additionally, mechanisms used by women of color to navigate and succeed despite these barriers, such as mentoring, are explored throughout.

It was modelled on the UK’s Athena Swan Charter (Advance HE), a framework for improving gender equity and diversity in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM); specifically, within higher education and research.

Creativity is one of indicators in assessing learners’ competence and personality. Innovation skill and capability are expected to be developed continuously by learners in their learning environment. KAUGACI production was a keychain product by utilizing used goods in the form of cardboard, and it was developed by students of history education of Jember University. This research aims to assess the effectiveness of products in improving students’ psychomotor skills in the university level. 100 respondents with demographic profiles based on gender and entrepreneurial experience were taken as the research participants. The findings showed that KAUGACI products had high effectiveness and productivity that gave impact to the students’ skills development.

Acudir a la epistemología es una práctica necesaria para el desempeño de la Educación Superior, más si se trata de la universidad en una sociedad cambiante, con interrogantes que echan por tierra lascreencias con las que se han diseñado los sistemas educativos. El objetivo ha sido analizar la mudanza paradigmática que está ocurriendo en la actualidad en las ciencias, y en particular en la concepción del papel social de la Universidad, marcada por el surgimiento de epistemologías emergentes como el Pensamiento Complejo, el Movimiento Ciencia, Tecnología y Sociedad, la Epistemología del Sur y la Epistemología de Segundo Orden. El método ha sido el análisis hermenéutico de las fuentes consultadas. El resultado ha sido una visión sintética de la trasformación epistemológica en curso contenida en tendencias de pensamento que, a pesar de sus diferencias, presentan coincidencias que muestran una ruptura con la epistemologia positivista tradicional, la cual ha sido el sostén de formas de educación que han quedado obsoletas.EPISTEMOLOGICAL CHALLENGES OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE 21ST CENTURYAbstractReturn to the epistemology is a necessary practice for the performance of Higher Education, still more so in the case of the university in the mutant society with question that play by land the beliefs considered in the design of the educative systems. Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, abbreviated as STEM is a very promising field and its popularity is increasing due to its benefits in the modern world of globalization and modernization. Science and mathematics are basics of the technological developments going on in the world. In order to continue with these developments, the children should be motivated to learn STEM from early school days. The minds of small kids are like a sponge and they are able to grasp everything quickly. STEM education should be encouraged from the childhood so that children like it and continue with it for higher education. This chapter discusses some of the challenges observed while encouraging children to learn STEM at early age and also tries to list out some solutions for it.

The present chapter provides an analysis of the possible applications of the TAM (Technology Acceptance Model) for the study of the mobile technology acceptance process at the higher education level, through a literature review on the state of the art. With this aim in mind, the chapter will start by presenting the theoretical principles of the TAM model and its evolution. After that, the authors will describe the state of the research on the topic, first within the field of education in general, to focus then on the university level, and finally on mobile learning specifically. Throughout the analysis, the most significant studies will be highlighted as an example. Lastly, the authors will provide some brief conclusions and proposals for future lines of research derived from the consulted literature.
