Emotional regulation is an individual’s ability to regulate emotions. Individual regulate his/her emotion to be able to control his/her life. In practice, the ability of emotional regulation can be influenced by various factors. One of the factors that can influence the process of emotional regulation is the level of religiosity. In this study, researchers aimed to be able to see the relationship of students’ religiosity on emotional regelation possessed by students. This study involved 319 elementary school students in SD X. Participants were given a set of assessments to measure the level of religiosity and emotional regulation. Religiosity is measured by using the Dimension Religiosity Scale to measure preoccupation, conviction, emotional involvement, and guidance. To measure emotional regulation, researchers used the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for Children and Adolescent (ERQ-CA) to measure the level of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression possessed by students. Data was analysised using correlation test  in SPSS version 23. From the results of the correlation test conducted found that there is a significant relationship between the variables of religiosity and emotional regulation (r = 0.248, with p < 0.05). This shows that if the level of religiosity students have is high, the ability of students to regulate emotions will be better.

Abstract. Mental Toughness (MT) provides crucial psychological capacities for achievement in sports, education, and work settings. Previous research examined the role of MT in the domain of mental health and showed that MT is negatively associated with and predictive of fewer depressive symptoms in nonclinical populations. The present study aimed at (1) investigating to what extent mentally tough individuals use two emotion regulation strategies: cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression; (2) exploring whether individual differences in emotion regulation strategy use mediate the relationship between MT and depressive symptoms. Three hundred sixty-four participants (M = 24.31 years, SD = 9.16) provided self-reports of their levels of MT, depressive symptoms, and their habitual use of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. The results showed a statistically significant correlation between MT and two commonly used measures of depressive symptoms. A small statistically significant positive correlation between MT and the habitual use of cognitive reappraisal was also observed. The correlation between MT and the habitual use of expressive suppression was statistically significant, but the size of the effect was small. A statistical mediation model indicated that individual differences in the habitual use of expressive suppression mediate the relationship between MT and depressive symptoms. No such effect was found for the habitual use of cognitive reappraisal. Implications of these findings and possible avenues for future research are discussed.

Early adversity, including institutional orphanage care, is associated with the development of internalizing disorders. Previous research suggests that institutionalization can disrupt emotion regulation processes, which contribute to internalizing symptoms. However, no prior work has investigated how early orphanage care shapes emotion regulation strategy usage (e.g., cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression) and whether said strategy usage contributes to internalizing symptoms. The present study probed emotion regulation strategy usage and internalizing symptoms in a sample of 36 previously institutionalized and 58 comparison youth. As hypothesized, previously institutionalized youth exhibited higher rates of internalizing symptoms than comparison youth, and more frequent use of suppression partially accounted for the relationship between early institutional care and elevated internalizing symptoms. Contrary to our initial hypotheses, reappraisal use did not buffer previously institutionalized or comparison youth against internalizing symptoms. Our findings highlight the potential utility of targeting emotion regulation strategy usage in adversity-exposed youth in future intervention work.

Adolescents are prone to emotional turmoil. Feedback received from the environment, as a form of support, is required in the process of emotion regulation. Thus, it can be assumed that perceived social support will be associated with emotion regulation. However, research linking both variables has so far included only the relationship between quality social support and a single one of the emotion regulation strategies in late adolescence. This study fills the gap, and aims to examine the relationship between quantity and quality of perceived social support with emotion regulation strategies across the entire adolescent age range in Jakarta. The measuring tool used was the Social Support Questionnaire 6 (quantity of perceived social support and perceived social support satisfaction) and the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression strategies). The sample comprised  adolescents in Jakarta who had achieved formal educational levels, and who came from families with middle to lower level Status Ekonomi Social (SES; Socio-Economic Status; N = 427). The authors used Pearson Product Correlation and linear regression data analysis techniques. The results showed that thequantity of perceived social support was not significantly associated witheither dimension of emotion regulation. Perceived social support satisfaction was significantly associated with both dimensions of emotional regulation.   Teenagers are prone to emotional turmoil. Medical education is the preference among the Pakistani students and families, despite the awareness that medical education is hectic due to massive knowledge to be acquired and multiple examinations to be cleared. Therefore, once entered to a medical college, only those students can pass with good grades, attain the degree, and enter in the field as qualified doctors who indulge in serious studious activities. Thus, the medical colleges trigger a lot of stress and anxiety for the students which eventually influences their emotions and emotion related abilities. Objectives: To explore the relationship of anxiety and emotional regulation among undergraduate medical students of Federal Medical and Dental College. Study Design: Descriptive research design. Setting:  Federal Medical and Dental College, Islamabad. Period:  6 months. Method: A sample comprising 300 medical students was selected from Federal Medical and Dental College. Consensus sampling was used for data collection. Relationship of anxiety and emotional regulation was analyzed using Beck Anxiety Inventory by Aaron Beck (BAI) (1988), Emotional Regulation Questionnaire (Gross & John, 2003). Results: The results show that there exists a substantial positive relationship between anxiety, expressive suppression and emotion regulation and noteworthy negative association between anxiety and cognitive reappraisal. Anxiety and emotional regulation are significantly related with gender. Females have higher anxiety as compared to males and female medical students use more expressive suppression emotion regulation strategy as compared to male medical students. Conclusion: Medical students have higher levels of anxiety which calls for appropriate measures so that their anxiety levels may be reduced and students may learn healthy emotional regulation to lead a better adjusted life.

This study explored family function as a key factor of loneliness, hope, and emotion related to secondary vocational school students during the novel coronavirus pandemic. Chinese versions of the Olson Family Function Scale, Russell Loneliness Scale, Snyder Hope Scale, and Gross Emotion Regulation Scale were completed by 5,138 participants. Guardian type significantly predicted family function and loneliness. Family function significantly and positively correlated with loneliness. The relationship between family function and loneliness was mediated by hope, and expressive suppression concurrently moderated the relationship between hope and loneliness. Our study offers meaningful insights into the family function of Chinese secondary vocational school students. The findings supported a moderated mediation model that exemplifies the relationship between family function, loneliness, expressive suppression, and hope. Although the results showed that high hope mediated lower family functioning and loneliness, low expressive suppression led to intense loneliness immediately. This study confirms that emotional strategy is important and associated with mental health. It also suggests that schools should pay more attention to students' emotion regulation and help them rebuild hope or appropriate cognition to relieve loneliness during crisis events.

Research has shown that the use of maladaptive coping strategies and difficulties in regulating mood are linked to increasing risk of suicide. This study measured the impact of coping and emotion regulation on suicidal behavior in a sample of Asian students. The aim was to determine whether different coping strategies and methods of expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal would be associated with suicidal behavior. One hundred and twenty undergraduate students were recruited from The Open University in Hong Kong and all completed questionnaires that measured coping, emotional regulation, and suicidal behavior. The results showed that increased avoidance coping was associated with increased suicidal behavior, whereas increased cognitive reappraisal was associated with reduced risk of suicidal behavior. Specifically, in an Asian student population, avoidance coping appears to be a risk factor for suicide, while cognitive reappraisal may be seen as a positive, protecting strategy.

AbstractDifficulties in intimate partner relationships are known to have detrimental effects on mental health. The association between relationship difficulties and depression is particularly strong for individuals with a tendency for rumination. While the link between rumination and depression has long been established, the indirect effects of shame and emotion regulation on this relationship remain less clear. The present study reports on longitudinal data of 65 participants (36 males) who had experienced recent relationship difficulties with their partner. Respondents provided Time 1 data for rumination (brooding and reflection), shame (personal feelings of shame) and relationship difficulties. Approximately 15 weeks later, Time 2 data was collected for emotion regulation (cognitive reappraisal, expressive suppression), relationship difficulties and depression. Mediation analyses with bias-corrected bootstrapping indicated that shame fully mediated the relationship between brooding and depression, and partially mediated the relationship between reflection and depression. The indirect effects remained significant with covariates (relationship difficulties at Time 1, and cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression at Time 2). Results suggest that self-evaluations related to shame contribute to the relationship between rumination and depression, independent of affect regulation. Implications for the role of shame in relationship difficulties are discussed.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the mediating role of cognitive emotion regulation in the relationship of early maladaptive schemas with spouse abuse. Methods: In this descriptive-correlational study, 324 married adults (226 females, 98 males) living in Tehran, Iran in 2017 were selected using a convenience sampling technique. They completed the revised Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS-2), the Young Scale Questionnaire-Short Form (YSQ-SF), and the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ). Collected data were analyzed using Pearson correlation test and Structural Equations Modeling (SEM) in AMOS software. Results: The results of SEM showed a direct significant path from early maladaptive schemas to cognitive emotional regulation, and from cognitive emotional regulation to spouse abuse. There were also significant indirect paths from the first, second, and third domains of early maladaptive schemas to spouse abuse mediated by negative cognitive emotion regulation strategies with a path coefficients of 0.13, 0.16, and 0.13, respectively. The final structural model was a good-fitting model (X2/dF=1.595, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation = 0.045, Comparative Fit Index =0.953). Conclusion: The relationship between early maladaptive schemas and spouse abuse is not linear; it is mediated by cognitive emotion regulation.

This prospective study aimed to examine whether illness-related negative emotions mediate the relationship of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression to the well-being of 99 patients with rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis. After adjusting for disease and patient-related parameters, only cognitive reappraisal was associated with physical and psychological well-being through emotions. Expressive suppression was associated with psychological well-being only for patients reporting less use of cognitive reappraisal. These results underscore the need for prospective studies that will investigate the long-term impact of emotion regulation on adaptation to chronic illness and the conditions under which this impact takes place.
