Chapter 3 discusses the problematic fictional indigenista film genre. Falling under the political ideology of indigenismo—discourses advocating for the social and economic integration of indigenous populations at the beginning of the twentieth century—the intended goal of the film genre was to introduce the “indigenous experience” to urban, mestizo audiences. Cinema held a unique position in this construction, but presented contradictory messages: it neither fully promoted nor totally negated integrationist procedures through the cinematic constructions of indigenous cultures. Within these representations, music played a crucial role in not just providing adequate changes in atmosphere but also in sonically depicting the indigenous experience. The chapter focuses on two films, Janitzio (1935) and María Candelaria (1944). These films both enforce exoticist representations that moved against integrationist discourses. While the cinematic interpretations indicate that modern society attempted to integrate these communities, the exoticist aural and visual representations of these communities amplified their Otherness.

The goal of this article is to generalize the results of the sociological research of 2018 “Interconfessional and interethnic relations in the Mari El Republic”, pertaining to linguistic consciousness and linguistic behavior of the Hill Mari, residing on the territory of the Gornomariysky District of the Mari El Republic. The subject of this research is the social (ethnic identity, communicative, lingual competency, state) status of the Hill Mari language in modern society from the perspective of social consciousness of the local population. The conclusions and generalizations of the authors can have practical importance for correction of national policy, linguistic “construction” and principles of interethnic interaction in a multiethnic region. The state and social status of the Hill Mari language is brought to the forefront within the framework of a study on the linguistic situation in the Mari El Republic. It is proved that the ethnic community actively mobilizes the internal mechanisms of ethnolinguistic protection and attempts to comprehensively support the social status of the language on the ethnic identity, communicative and linguistic competence levels. Support of the Hill Mari language on the state level remains a relevant issue.

The purpose of this article is to analyse the current state of fighting corruption as one of the negative phenomena that hinder the economic development of the state, parasitizing the whole body of Ukrainian society. It is emphasized that existing in society, being a product of social relations, corruption permeates various social spheres of society, deforms various groups of social relations. It is appropriate that a narrowly chosen approach to preventing such a negative phenomenon significantly reduces the effect of such an activity and, as a result, does not enable to form an autonomous system that would be resistant to other accompanying risk factors. It is worth paying attention to the problems that are gaining the objective acuteness in recent times and are to oppose the state regulation of the economy by administrative methods and the so-called “freedom” of the development of economic relations. The need for operational intervention in the economy by state institutions through the adoption of managerial decisions, taking into account the growth of the global economic crisis, produces a separate phenomenon – economic corruption. However, the strong link between the social and economic spheres indicates the need for a comprehensive counteraction to such a socially dangerous phenomenon. Along with this, the determinants of the spread of corruption in Ukraine are characterized by their social nature, and less – by an economic one. It is stressed that corruption can be considered as a kind of social corrosion, which erodes and destroys public authorities, in particular, the state and society as a whole. The article reveals the content and significance of corruption, its types and forms. It is indicated that corruption – a social phenomenon that has a social conditionality and rules of social development and influence on social processes. The social nature of corruption manifests itself first of all in the fact that it has historical origins and social preconditions. Practical importance of the scientific research is to find out the causes and consequences of corruption for the economic development of the state, which is extremely important for improving the current legislation of Ukraine, which cannot be effective without conducting a high-quality anti-corruption expertise, built on a clear mechanism for conducting such an examination and reliable, validated methodologies. Methodology. The methodological foundations of the study of corruption are determined by a set of methods of scientific knowledge, which allow considering this problem as a multidimensional, multidisciplinary phenomenon. The research strategy, which is the basis of the integrated approach, grounds, first of all, on the following methodological principles: the formulation of a general theoretical concept; the development of cross-cutting concepts and categories that ensure the unity of the approach to the research object.

In order to implement educational programs for sustainable development among doctors who are representatives of one of the most socially important professions, it is necessary to increase the level of their legal culture, in particular in the sphere of relations arising during the medical activity. The content of education for sustainable development should be relevant to the needs of the modern society with the emphasis on both cognitive and non-cognitive aspects of learning. Thus, it is due to the programs of education for sustainable development that include global civil education on the issues of peace, human rights, as well as intercultural and international relations, the need of the population for the knowledge, skills, values and attitude is satisfied, which is necessary for the adoption of reasonable decisions and active participation in solving both local and global problems of our time. These provisions are of particular importance given the characteristics of the medical profession. After all, health care, as one of the most socially meaningful fields of activity, is associated with the emergence of specific legal relations regulated by regulatory and legal acts. In our opinion, in order to create the preconditions for further development and strengthening of the social significance of medical law, it is necessary to amend the List of branches of knowledge and specialties, which are training applicants for tertiary education, approved by the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated April 29, 2015, No.266, namely, to make an addition of a list of names of specialties in the field of knowledge 08 «Law» with the specialty «Medical Law». The proposed innovation will not only provide opportunities for the development of a given legal field, but will also provide the opportunity to introduce tertiary education programs for the simultaneous training for two specialties in the fields of knowledge 22 «Health» and 08 «Law», which, in our opinion, will contribute to increase the level of professional competence of medical workers.

In the early twentieth century, debate concerning the social impact of skyscrapers in the modernizing city was widespread, and usually quite acrimonious. This paper will address how artists of this time-period, in their artistic representations of cities and skyscrapers created an urban metaphor of the picturesque as a means to influence a public, increasingly not in favour of the skyscraper. In effect, skyscrapers slowly crept into artistic representations, humbly appearing in late-nineteenth century architectural magazine illustrations or as accents in the skyline of American impressionist paintings. The prolific growth of the twentieth century brought the public debate over skyscrapers into the spotlight and artists took this as an opportunity to promote their views. Some artists, such as the Pictorialists took the opportunity to aestheticize their pictures of the buildings in a fashion that might convey a sense of sublime in the city. Much of the scholarship on the depiction of the skyscraper in the arts has been limited to the Pictorialist photographer’s advancement of modern art in New York City; however, these studies neglect the social significance of the Pictorialist’s use of nature metaphors to create an urban sublime reminiscent of the romantic, picturesque landscapes of the previous century. My paper examines the effect of this aestheticization and the significant promotion and support of the skyscraper from the visual arts, specifically from the photographs of Alfred Stieglitz and his circle. I will investigate the development of this aesthetic and how familiarity with this style strengthened support for the skyscraper in the metropolis of New York City. I will further explore these ideas by examining the treatment paintings and photography, in the construction of a familiar sense of awe and, in other words, conjuring the picturesque as a device.
