Children who grow up not knowing their biological fathers blame their mothers for being secretive and alienating them from their fathers. Research on undisclosed fathers has not shed light on why mothers would not inform the children of their fathers’ identities. This study, set in South Africa, explored maternal non-disclosure with the specific aim of creating an understanding of women’s motivations for withholding information or not introducing a child to his/her father. The research employed an exploratory qualitative approach and used an interpretive approach to garner from narratives of mothers and guardians their experiences of living with non-disclosure. Eight, one-on-one in-depth interviews were conducted with participants aged 33 to 60. Through thematic analysis, women’s first-hand accounts could be described and the essence of the phenomenon for all the participants collated. The findings suggest a supposition that there were broader challenges for mothers on how to go about the disclosure in terms of what to say to the child, and at what age it would be appropriate to start discussing the father. The fleeting discussions that did at times occur around the father indicate that disclosure is not a static event, but rather a fluid and an ongoing process. Based on the findings of our research this article provides insight into supportive strategies that may be devised to aid mothers who wish to disclose

An estimated 90 per cent of children with a hearing loss are born to hearing parents. Most parents are unprepared for the diagnosis, leaving them shocked, confused, sad and bewildered. This article reports on a study aimed at exploring and describing the experiences of hearing parents regarding their child’s hearing loss. The study was conducted in Cape Town, South Africa. The study applied a qualitative methodology with a phenomenological design. Purposive sampling was implemented and data were collected by means of unstructured in-depth interviews. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Ethical considerations were adhered to. The main findings of the study indicated that hearing parents experience a myriad of emotions when their child is diagnosed with a hearing loss. This study advocates for various stakeholders in the helping profession to collaborate in the best interest of hearing parents and a child with hearing loss. Furthermore, these findings serve as guidelines for professionals working with these families.

The multiracial family and the existence of mixed race children have come to be a regular feature of Irish familial life. Yet, nation-building discourses have promulgated notions of ethnic and religious homogeneity with Irish identity being racialised exclusively as white. Moreover, to date, there has been a dearth of academic scholarship related to racial mixedness in the Irish context. Through in-depth interviews, this paper sets out, therefore, to provide empirical insight into the lives of fifteen black (African) – white (Irish) mixed race young people (aged 4 to 18) with a particular focus on their experiences of racialised exclusion. Indeed, findings suggest that, as in other majority white national contexts, the black-white mixed race young people are racialised as black in the Irish public domain and as such, are positioned as ‘racialised outsiders’. In fact, their narrative accounts shed light on everyday encounters saturated by ‘us-them’ racial constructs based on phenotype. Thus, these young people, who are not fully recognised as mixed race Irish citizens, are effectively deprived of a space in which to articulate their belonging within the existing statist (i.e. inside/outside) framework.

The implementation of credentialing program in JKN is different from the previous era, particularly for new medical facilities and medical provider of PT. Jamsostek and ASABRI. Therefore, this study aims at finding out the description associated with the process of credentialing implementation of the first-level health facilities from the perspective of PPK 1 and BPJS Kesehatan, Denpasar Branch. This research was conducted in January 2014 using qualitative approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews to 11 medical facilities, as well as 2 executive credentialing teams from BPJS Kesehatan, Denpasar Branch. The subjects were selected purposively and the data was analyzed using thematic analysis. There are still some obstacles in the implementation of such credentialing program: there are still existing providers, especially TNI/Polri, which have the value below standard but are still contracted to serve JKN participants because the number is still relatively small. The new medical facilities have difficulty in self-assessment because there are many indicators that must be met, but the budget is limited. The study concludes that credentialing program has not yet fully applied the concept of managed care, thus regular monitoring to improve medical quality is needed.

The purpose of this research is to explore the perspectives of directors to determine how they define, perceive, value, build and manage corporate reputation. A qualitative research design was employed. In order to gauge director’s perspectives, 12 semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with the directors of a multi-national company based in South Africa. The company operates in a highly regulated and competitive industry. The findings demonstrate that corporate reputation is indeed acknowledged as a key, intangible asset. Whilst the directors did not possess clear insight into building and managing corporate reputation, several key themes emerged. We report on their perceptions of the definitions, key dimensions and value ascribed to corporate reputation. By demonstrating the value that is associated with corporate reputation and by ascertaining that directors are indeed the appropriate custodians of corporate reputation, there will be better acceptance in introducing corporate reputation as a board room agenda item, that is well understood and implemented.

Background: The aim of the present study was to identify the factors that influence the global migration of South African anatomical pathologists working in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.Objective: The present study answered the question ‘what factors influence Kwazulu-Natal-based histopathologists to emigrate out of South Africa?’, thus providing insight into an under-researched medical specialisation. Methods: A qualitative approach and purposive sampling were used. Data included 11 in-depth interviews with histopathologists working in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), and one interview with a former KZN-based histopathologist now working in the United States. The interviews were recorded and transcribed. The data were coded for patterns, and these patterns generated themes. The processes of coding and thematic generation were iterative. Results: Six themes were discovered from the data. Of these, five themes suggested reasons for the potential emigration of histopathologists. These included: lack of recognition by clinical doctors, lack of career-pathing opportunities, the deterrent of compulsory service in the public sector upon qualifying, socio-economic and political instability in South Africa, and endemic levels of crime. A sixth theme revealed that remuneration was not a deciding factor as to whether histopathologists choose to emigrate. Conclusions: Remuneration was not revealed to be a reason for emigration, as these specialists’ salaries are commensurate with global salaries. The findings, whilst not generalisable, suggest that more work needs to be done on the human relations aspects of retention for these medical specialists. This has implications for human resources for health policy. Resultate: Ses temas is in hierdie data ontdek.

While innovation is important for firms’ competitive advantage and economic development, knowledge about both innovation practices and models is based on large organizations, and the applicability of the findings of such research to women entrepreneurs who dominate the small businesses is limited. The aim of this study was to understand how innovation capability develops in women entrepreneurs in food-based enterprises. This study emphasized an interpretive approach in order to help deepen our understanding of the innovation capability among women entrepreneurs. A qualitative approach, grounded from a social constructionist theorizing was used. This study utilized the data from ten women entrepreneurs from the Northern States of Malaysia. Semi-structured interview was used to collect the data. The data were transcribed and categorized in order to find differences and similarities, and then analyzed using the thematic analysis. Based on ten women-owned businesses in this study the findings indicate that innovation was constructed in terms of the ability to capitalize on sophisticated machineries for innovation purposes. In addition, innovation was articulated in the form of new or improved products. Most women entrepreneurs develop their innovation capability from customer engagement, employee participation, networking, family members as well as from their owned experiences and expertise. From a policy perspective, innovation program specifically aimed at women entrepreneurs should be delivered effectively by the relevant agencies.

Introduction  Promotion from paramedic to manager is common in ambulance services, yet there is limited research concerning paramedics’ experience of this role transition. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of paramedics who have transitioned from clinician to manager. Methods  A qualitative approach was used for this study. Through purposive sampling, semi-structured interviews were conducted with paramedics who had made the transition to manager. The participants were asked to describe how they felt and what their experiences were concerning this transition. Thematic analysis was undertaken identifying themes within participant responses. Results  Six key themes emerged during the data analysis. Participants described feelings of isolation on moving from the frontline, a lack of feeling part of the team ‘in green’; however, they also reported that previously being a paramedic in some instances gave credibility in their new manager roles. Challenges reported concerned no formal training before transitioning into the role, and the lack of essential managerial experience. Conclusion  This research provided insight into how paramedics feel and perceive the transition from clinician to management roles. A review of the organisational approach to role transition is of benefit to paramedics. Such a review may help identify what changes could be made in support of paramedics transitioning to management roles. Further research is required across other ambulance services to determine the efficacy of these results in the broader ambulance service environment.

This study sought to gain insight into the attitudes, beliefs, and values that shape bondage/discipline/sadomasochism (BDSM) activities and to explore the degree and consequences of unintended or non-negotiated harms, including physical, emotional, and sexual violence. A qualitative approach, consisting of 22 semistructured interviews and over 150 hours of observations of BDSM events and activities, was used to develop an in-depth exploration of the lived experiences of participants. Thematic analysis was employed to elucidate the ways in which participants define and in some cases experience harm. Findings suggest that individuals construct rational identities that emphasize safe practices and managing harm; however; there are instances where “boundary slippage” occurs. Implications for understanding the dynamics as well as the potential dangers of “consensual” violence are discussed.
