Attitudes of Scholars towards Self-Archiving in Institutional Repositories of Zimbabwe's Public Universities

The introduction of open-access institutional repositories in scholarly communication presents an opportunity for public universities in Zimbabwe to increase the visibility, reach and impact of their research output. However, this opportunity is missed because of the low utilisation of the repositories by scholars in the institutions. Guided by the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology model, the researchers investigated academics’ awareness levels of and attitudes, perceptions and concerns about institutional repositories with the aim of understanding academics’ deposit behaviour. Both qualitative and quantitative methods in the forms of a questionnaire and interviews were used to gather data from academics and library and research directors at eight universities and from policy documents and university websites. Stratified, systematic and convenience sampling techniques, including the complete enumeration method, were used. The findings revealed that academics lacked knowledge and awareness of institutional repositories and their value in scholarly communication. Therefore, marketing and training should be intensified to increase acceptance and usage of repositories.

This research explored the awareness, usage and perspectives of Tanzanian researchers on open access as a mode of scholarly communication. A survey questionnaire targeted 544 respondents selected through stratified random sampling from a population of 1088 university researchers of the six public universities in Tanzania. With a response rate of 73%, the data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. The study reveals that the majority of the researchers were aware of and were positive towards open access. Findings further indicate that the majority of researchers in Tanzanian public universities used open access outlets more to access scholarly content than to disseminate their own research findings. It seems that most of these researchers would support open access publishing more if issues of recognition, quality and ownership were resolved. Thus many of them supported the idea of establishing institutional repositories at their respective universities as a way of improving the dissemination of local content. The study recommends that public universities and other research institutions in the country should consider establishing institutional repositories, with appropriate quality assurance measures, to improve the dissemination of research output emanating from these institutions.

This paper aims to examine the students' acceptance on using self-archive in open access repositories guiding by the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model. This paper utilized convenience sampling method, with a total of 204 sets of self-administered questionnaire collected among the students of public higher learning institution in Federal Territory of Labuan, Malaysia. Multiple regressions were performed to examine the relationships between performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating conditions towards the intention to use self-archive in institutional repository. The findings revealed that the students behavioural attention on the acceptance of using self-archive in repository were positively influence by social influence and facilitating condition. The repository administrators shall increase the efforts to enhance the quality of the repository as well as encouraging students' interest to use the service.

Scholarly communication involves publishing the research findings by academics and researchers in order to share and make available the academic or research output to the global community of researchers. Emergence of Internet and World Wide Web has brought revolutionary changes in the process of scholarly communication. Increasing price of serial publications, time lag in the publication and readership and other associated problems were addressed by the electronic journals and open access initiatives. Other models like – Consortia and Institutional Repositories have evolved as a cost saving models and improving communication. The social networking sites on the Internet are also promoting scholarly communication to a great extent. In the light of the changing technological environment this chapter depicts the history of scholarly publishing and reviews the changes that took place in the process of scholarly communication. Further, the impact of the changing models on Library and Information Centres (LICs) is examined.

AbstractThis research examined  the Arabic language development and learning at Madrasah Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah, Yogyakarta. Research diagnosed the components or sub-systems in Arabic language learning, which involved students, teachers, learning goals, methods, and Arabic text books. It is intended to describe the learning process of Arabic language in perspective of system approach. This research is a mixed research of qualitative and quantitative methods. In general, the interaction of sub-systems, namely students, teacher conditions, goals, methods, and text books is collaborative and cooperative. Even though, some problems were still found in each sub-system. The interaction of sub-systems in the learning process that implemented the interdependent, cooperative and dynamic principals, worked well. In addition, it is necessary to perform educational efforts to improve teacher competencies and student quality with education and training, workshop, seminar, text-book writing, comparative study, and direct practice.  Therefore, the Arabic learning process may find an ideal format and solutive and educational steps in designing Arabic language learning that is active, conducive, creative, innovative, and fun.Abstrak Penelitian ini membahas tentang pengembangan dan pembelajaran bahasa Arab di Madrasah Mu’allimin Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. enelitian ini mencoba mendiagnosa komponen atau sub-sub system dalam pembelajaran bahasa Arab yang meliputi siswa, guru, tujuan pembelajaran, metode, dan buku ajar bahasa Arab.Hal ini dimaksudkan untuk mendeskripsikan proses pembelajaran bahasa Arab dalam perspektif pendekatan system. Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian kombinasi (mix research) antara kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Secara umum, interaksi antar sub system seperti siswa, kondisi guru, tujuan, metode, dan buku ajar saling kolaboratif dan sinergis. Meskipun masih banyak ditemukan beberapa masalah di masing-masing sub system tersebut. Interaksi antar sub system tersebut dapat berjalan dengan baik dalam proses pembelajaran dengan melaksanakan prinsipi interdependensi, sinergitas, dan dinamis. Disamping itu, perlu melakukan upaya-upaya edukatif untuk meningkatkan kompetensi guru dan kualitas siswa dengan pendidikan dan pelatihan, workshop, seminar, penulisan buku ajar, studi banding (comparative study), dan praktek langsung (direct practice). Dengan begitu, proses pembelajaran bahasa arab dapat menemukan format ideal dan langkah-langkah solutif-edukatif dalam mendesain pembelajaran bahasa Arab yang aktif, kondusif, kreatif, inovatif dan menyenangkan.

Covid-19 pandemic has adversely affected the newspaper sector. Majority readers, especially among the students, have since opted to use social media, television, radio, and online for news updates. Most of the students avoid reading the newspaper due to fear of contracting the disease. The study used both qualitative and quantitative methods of research designs. The quantitative design helped in identifying the readership magnitude of the hardcopy, online and broadcast versions before and after the Covid-19 pandemic while; the qualitative design helped identifying the causes of variation in magnitude in hardcopy newspaper readership. The study collected data from the primary source using a questionnaire with a sample of 50 respondents picked through convenience sampling method. The findings indicate that majority age of students interviewed ranged between 18-22 years and majority were male at 68% compared to female, 32%.  Also, most students, 94%, read the newspapers before the outbreak of Covid-19. 56 percent of them preferred the Daily Nation, 24% the Standard Newspaper while the rest went for the Star, the Nairobian and other versions of print media. However, after the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, most students, 90%, feared reading the newspapers and instead 68% went for Facebook, 24% used twitter while 8% used other forms of social media for news update. In conclusion, the use of traditional media like television and radio is still common among the students. The study indicate that majority 58%, of students used television sets for news update, 24% used radio, 10% used online media while 8% used other forms of media.

Recently, Financial Inclusion has received greater attention, as it is a key to economic growth and equality, growth of the business, and stability of financial and banking systems. In the process of understanding how technology is useful for financial inclusion, the study tries to understand the elements that prompt the perceived acceptability of mobile banking among the low income and low literate stratum. To explore these elements, the current piece of work utilized the Unified theory of acceptance and use of technology and with the addition of component of perceived risk. The research utilized convenience sampling to collect data from the respondents having Jan Dhan account. The results show that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and perceived risk have a significant influence on intention to use mobile banking among financial inclusion stratum. Surprisingly, the facilitating conditions were found insignificant. The outcomes of the research can guide banks and technology houses to develop a more user-acceptable mobile banking system. Also, the outcome will help policymakers to enhance mobile banking system adoption for financial inclusion by considering influencing elements.

Concern has been raised over low research output from universities in Southern Africa and its poor visibility on the global sphere. However, public universities in Zimbabwe adopted open access (OA) institutional repositories (IR) to increase publication output, access, visibility, and reach to a wide audience. This chapter reports on a study that explored the challenges faced by academics and librarians in Zimbabwe's public universities in contributing to and managing the IRs. A mixed methods approach was adopted with eight participating universities where directors of research, library directors, faculty/IR librarians, and academics were purposely selected. The study identified several impediments to the success of the IRs and these include academics' fears and misconceptions regarding OA and IRs, libraries experienced difficulties convincing university managers about OA exacerbated by an absence of enabling conditions to promote IR development. The chapter recommends that OA education needs to be intensified OA/IR and the universities' policies should recognise publication in OA platforms and enforce deposit mandates.

The study assesses Library and Information Science (LIS) education and training in Zimbabwe in the context of global and technological innovations. The study is informed by the post-positivist paradigm and used both qualitative and quantitative methods. The case study research design was used with different data collection tools such as survey questionnaires, in-depth interviews and document reviews. The population of the study included five deans or heads of departments and 47 LIS faculty staff, 108 final-year students from the five institutions offering LIS education and training in Zimbabwe, and 17 employers. Deans and LIS employers were purposively selected. All LIS faculty staff were included in the study. LIS final-year students were selected using the simple random sampling technique. Data were analysed using NVivo 10 and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 20. The study found very low levels of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) integration into LIS curricula. This was attributed to status quo bias (a preference for the current state of affairs), a lack of appropriate enabling incentives such as policy and regulatory frameworks, inadequate human and physical ICT infrastructure, lack of a committed transformational technological leadership, and lack of a clear sense of educational purpose for ICT use. In addition, the study found that effective ICT integration is hindered by paradigm paralysis, paradigm effects and attendant organisational inertia in LIS education institutions in Zimbabwe. The study calls for a paradigm shift in LIS education from the teacher-centred instructivism to student-centred or heutagogical approaches.

The article tries to highlight the evolution and conceptual framework of institutional repositories and their impact on the academic and scholarly circles in terms of better visibility, wider audience and earlier communication of research. The characteristics associated with the institutional repositories are also highlighted, which makes them stand out from the crowd in the family of open access scholarly platforms. The study is based on the examination and evaluation of the articles published across various peer-reviewed journals showcasing numerous dimensions of institutional repositories, ranging from their evolution to open scholarly acceptance. A preliminary search on institutional repositories was carried through two well-renowned indexing/abstracting databases of peer-reviewed literature, Clarivate Analytic’s, Web of Science and Elsevier’s Scopus. Search terms like institutional repositories, institutional research output, open access repositories, green open access, open access, open access publishing, open access initiatives, digital libraries, directory of open access repositories, open DOAR and scholarly communication were run across the databases for article retrieval, and the relevant studies were extracted accordingly. To make the study more comprehensive and current, the studies citing the retrieved articles were also consulted. The study reveals that the benefits associated with institutional repositories are manifold. They recounter users with the information which was otherwise unavailable due to the reasons ranging from the non-availability of supplementary information (like unpublished reports and working papers, multimedia and audiovisual items, learning objects, other special item types, bibliographic references, datasets, lecture notes and so forth) to the paywall/subscription models adopted by commercial channels of scholarly communication. Furthermore, the social, research and technological factors tend to be the main motivating factors for their wider acceptance by the scholarly community at global, national, organizational, and individual levels. They enhance the preservation of institutional research output with increased viewership and prestige apart from achieving a potential research impact. They, in a real sense, have abrogated the unilateral assault orchestrated by the commercial publishers on the author community by democratizing their scholarly voices via open and barrierless scholarly platforms. They are the future of the academic output of an institution/author as they perform successfully within the constitutional boundaries of scholarly and academic publishing, thus safeguarding the rights and claims of every academic actor. Given the importance of institutional repositories for a more democratic, barrierless and impactful information communication, they are for sure going beyond various scholarly circles by breaking the traditional and rigid walls of scholarly endeavours. The study presents a useful overview of the progression of the institutional repositories, their intended purpose and how they serve to fill the gaps in scholarly publishing and meet the needs of the wider academic community. The article summarizes in one place a concise overview of the use and impact of institutional repositories. The study is also an eye-opener for scholars interested in the research in the field of institutional repositories.

This study aims to: (1) to know the consumer's characteristics of local food kupu (made of cassava), and (2) to know consumer perceptions of local food kupu. This research was a case study at the Home Industry "Griya Jawau Melin". The number of samples was 35 respondents, which has been specified with a convenience sampling technique. The research was designed both qualitative and quantitative methods, Data were collected through interviews with a questionnaire guide, and data were analyzed descriptively and using a Likert Scale.   These results indicate that kupu consumers have varied characteristics, including gender, age, ethnic, education, occupation, and income. Consumers' perceptions of local food kupu which consist of variables i.e. taste, quality, price, sosial, and culture, are considered good with a score of 3203 and an average score of 79.58. The variable that gives the highest score was a culture with an average score of 84.57, followed by sosial variables (average score 81.94), quality variable (average score 81.55), price variable (average score 77, 90), and lastly, the taste score with an average of 69.43. These results indicate that the most influencing purchases are cultural and sosial faktors, the taste faktor being the last variable influencing the purchase of Kupu after the quality and price variables.
