The objective of this study was to analyze the association of fiber consumption with nutritional status and blood lipid profile in dyslipidemic adults. The design study was cross sectional survey involving 79 subjects. The results showed that there were significant correlations between energy intake with High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and total cholesterol, fat intake with BMI (Body Mass Index), and BMI with Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and total cholesterol (p&lt;0.05). There was no significant correlation between consumption of fiber with nutritional status and blood lipid profile (p&gt;0.05). In conclusion, most of the dyslipidemia subjects were obese. Dyslipidemia subjects should keep their intake of energy and fat in recommended ranges in order not to be obese and keep the BMI in normal range to avoid abnormalities of blood lipid profile.<br /><br />

Background: The fetal-origin hypothesis and fetal programming emphasize the profound and sustained impact of factors related to fetal health on the development of chronic disease in adulthood. Several studies suggested that low birth weight and preterm birth linked to abnormalities in cord lipid profile and higher prevalence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Authors objectives was to estimate and compare cord lipid profile in term, pre-term, and post-term neonates.Methods: In the study group, there were 200 healthy Polish newborns. Newborn characteristics included sex, gestational age at birth, Apgar score, and anthropometric data (weight and length at birth, neonatal ponderal index, head, chest and abdominal circumferences, placental weight, and placental-fetal weight ratio). Cord blood samples were collected for total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and triglycerides (TG). Information regarding selected maternal factors was collected. Neonates were classified into preterm (<37 weeks) and term (≥37 weeks) based on new Ballard scoring.Results: The preterm had higher Total cholesterol compared to Term and post term and it was Statistically Significant with a p value of < 0.001. The preterm had higher Triglycerides compared to term and post term and it was statistically significant with a p value of <0.01. The preterm had higher HDL compared to Term and post term and it was statistically significant with a p value of <0.001. The preterm had higher LDL compared to Term and post term it was statistically significant with a p value of <0.001. The preterm had higher VLDL compared to Term and post term and it was statistically significant with a p value of <0.01.Conclusions: Abnormal intrauterine milieu created by maternal changes during gestation may bear a profound impact on lipid metabolism in neonates, which may account for their differences in lipid profile and anthropometry at birth.

Aim.To study the associations between blood lipid profile and blood glucose levels in men with coronary heart disease (CHD), stable effort angina (SEA), metabolic syndrome (MS), and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM-2).Material and methods.The study included 82 men (mean age 50,5±0,9 years) with CHD, Functional Class I–III SEA, MS, and DM-2. The following lipid profile parameters were assessed: total cholesterol (TCH), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL–CH), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL–CH), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL–CH), atherogenic index (AI), and triglyceride index (TGI), together with fasting blood glucose.Results.There were positive (direct) associations between higher levels (>90th percentile) of lipid profile parameters (TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL– CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and blood glucose, as well as between lower levels (≤10th percentile) of lipid profile parameters (TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL– CH, AI, TGI) and blood glucose. At the same time, there were negative (inverse) associations between lower lipid levels (≤10th percentile of TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL–CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and higher glucose levels (>90th percentile), as well as between higher lipid levels (>90th percentile of TCH, TG, LDL–CH, VLDL–CH, HDL–CH, AI, TGI) and lower glucose levels (≤10th percentile).Conclusion.Dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia demonstrate synergetic proatherogenic effects in patients with CHD, SEA, MS, and DM-2, as suggested by significant heterogeneous (direct and inverse) associations between lipid profile parameters and fasting blood glucose. The results obtained provide an opportunity for the assessment of risk levels, prognosis, and need for pharmacological prevention and treatment in patients with combined cardiovascular pathology.

Background The prevalence of smoking in adolescentstends to increase. Smoking is associated with a higher risk ofdyslipidemia.Objective To compare the lipid profiles of tobacco-smoking andnon-tobacco-smoking male adolescents.Methods We performed a cross- sectional study in three vocationalhigh schools in Yogyakarta from January to April 2011. Dataon smoking status, duration of smoking and number cigarettesconsumed per day were collected by questionnaires. We randomlyselected 50 male smokers and 50 male non-smokers as the studysubjects.Results Mean differences between smokers and non-smokerswere 44.5 (95%CI 28. 7 to 60.1) mg/dL for triglyceride levels; 8.0(95% CI 1.0 to 14.9) mg/dL for low density lipoprotein (LDL)cholesterol; 11.8 (1.1 to 22.4) mg/dL for total cholesterol and -5.7mg/dL (95% CI -8.8 to -2.6) for high density lipoprotein (HDL)cholesterol. Mean differences (95% CI) between smokers whohad engaged in smoking for > 2 years and those who had smokedfor :S:2 years were -18.1 (95% CI -33 .9 to -2.3) mg/dL for totalcholesterol; -49.4 (95% CI -67.2 to -3 1.5) mg/dL for triglycerides.Mean differences between those who smoked > 5 cigarettes/dayand :s:5 cigarettes per day were -18 .4 (95% CI -32.8 to -4.1) mg/dL for total cholesterol and -29.1 (95% CI -53.6 to -4.6) mg/dLfor triglycerides.Conclusion Smoking more than 5 cigarettes/day significantlyincreases total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceridelevels, as well as reduces HDL cholesterol levels; while smokingmore than 2 years significantly increases total cholesterol andtriglyceride levels

This study was conducted with 180 female Swiss albino mice to examine the effects of supplementing broiler fat in the diets of mice on blood lipid profile. Twenty one days old mice were collected from ICDDRB, Mohakhali, Dhaka. They were randomly distributed in four groups having three replications each. Each replicate group had 15 mice. Results revealed that supplementation of broiler fat in mice diet significantly changed (p<0.05) triglyceride (TG) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) among groups. The control group (T0) had the highest level of cholesterol and LDL. Cholesterol, TG and LDL markedly increased (p<0.05) in all dietary treatment groups, while high density lipoprotein (HDL) significantly (p<0.01) decreased after supplementation of experimental diets. It was concluded that all the dietary treatments in general increased blood cholesterol, TG and LDL in mice fed broiler fat with different oil supplements. However, the soybean and palm oil group was comparatively better than other groups in respect of cholesterol, HDL and LDL at the blood lipid profile of mice. Therefore, it can be concluded that consumption of broiler fat with soybean and palm oil could be less harmful for mice.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjas.v43i1.19380 Bang. J. Anim. The aim of this study is to accurately describe the eating pattern and nutritional status of international elite flatwater paddlers during 1 week of a high volume training camp. Ten male and 5 female international elite flatwater paddlers were recruited to take part in this study. These athletes were all members of the Spanish National Team. To assess the intake of energy, macronutrients, and micronutrients, we used the weighed food intake method carried out by an observer. Biochemical and hematological profiles were also obtained. Average daily energy intake in male and female flatwater paddlers was 21.5 ± 2.3 and 16.5 ± 1.7 MJ, respectively. Furthermore, the male athletes showed average carbohydrate and protein intakes of 7.5 ±0.8 and 2.2 ±0.3 g ·kg·1 body weight - day ’, respectively. Similar intakes were found in female paddlers. carbohydrate 7.3 ± 1.1 and protein 2.0±0.3g·kg·1 body weight·day·1. Daily relative contribution to energy from fat was higher than recommended for sports practitioners or sedentary people (< 30 % of daily energy) in both genders (39.1 ± 2.1 and 40.2± 2.9% for men and women, respectively). Nevertheless, this diet with a high fat content (rich in monounsaturated fatty acids) did not seem to influence the paddlers’ blood lipid profile that presented low values for total cholesterol and tryglicerides and high values for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol). Flatwater paddlers’ micronutrient intake was higher than Recommended Dietary Allowances/Dietary Reference Intake (RDA/DRIs), except for folate that is close to DRI values. Further studies are required in order to understand whether this level of fat intake could impair highly trained athletes’ performance and health.

Abstract Context Egg consumption is one of the main dietary sources of cholesterol, but whether individuals who eat more eggs have a worse blood lipid profile remains controversial. Objective We examined the relationship between egg consumption and lipid parameters and explored whether this relationship changes according to the presence of chronic metabolic disorders. Methods A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted with adult participants in the EVIDENT II trial. Adjusted linear regression models were stratified by the main chronic metabolic disorders. Results Among the 728 participants (61.9% women, mean age 52.1±11.9 years), the mean egg consumption was equivalent to 5-to-6 eggs per week for a 70 kg individual. In the fully-adjusted analysis, no association was found of egg consumption with total and HDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. Furthermore, compared to the first quartile of consumption, the fourth quartile was associated with lower LDL-c levels (coefficient: -7.01; 95%CI: -13.39, -0.62) and a lower LDL-c/HDL-c ratio (coefficient: -0.24, 95%CI: -0.41, -0.06). In the analyses stratified by chronic metabolic diseases, higher egg consumption was not associated with lipid profile in those with obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, or treated with hypolipidemic drugs, and was associated with a better lipid profile in participants without these conditions. Conclusions Higher egg consumption was not associated with blood lipids in individuals with chronic metabolic disorders. In individuals without such conditions, the lipid profile was better among those who consumed more eggs. Our findings support current guidelines recommending eggs as part of a healthy diet.

IntroductionPositive regulatory domain containing 16 (PRDM16) protein represents the key regulator of brown adipose tissue (BAT) development. It induces brown fat phenotype and represses white adipose tissue specific genes through the association with C-terminal binding co-repressor proteins (CtBP1 and CtBP2). In healthy adults presence of BAT has been associated with lower glucose, total cholesterol and LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels. Our aim was to analyze the association of PRDM16 gene (rs12409277) and CtBP2 gene (rs1561589) polymorphisms with body mass index (BMI), fasting glucose level and lipid profile of adolescents.Material and methodsOur study included 295 healthy school children, 145 boys (49.2%) and 150 girls (50.8%), 15 years of age. Genotypes for the selected polymorphisms were detected by the real-time PCR method. Age, gender, height, weight, lipid profile (total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides) and fasting glucose levels were recorded.ResultsWe did not find a statistically significant association of rs12409277 and rs1561589 polymorphisms with BMI, fasting glucose and lipid profile of adolescents. We further analyzed the combined effect of the two SNPs and the statistical analysis showed that carriers of CT genotype of rs12409277 polymorphism and GG genotype of rs1561589 polymorphism had significantly lower total cholesterol (p = 0.001) and LDL cholesterol (p = 0.008) levels compared to all other groups of genotypes.ConclusionsOur study suggests that rs12409277 and rs1561589 polymorphism might have an influence on total and LDL cholesterol levels in adolescents. Larger studies should be performed in order to confirm our results.

Background: To compare the cord blood lipid profile of 100 newborn babies born to hypertensive (Group A) and normotensive mothers (Group B).Methods: Total 100 newborns were taken, 50 born to hypertensive mothers and 50 to normotensive mothers. 5ml umbilical venous blood was collected, after clamping the cord, from placental side of the cord and sent to laboratory for centrifugation. Serum was analysed for lipid profile by spectrophotometry by siemens dimensional Rxl- Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, High density lipoprotein and Low density lipoprotein and Very low density lipoprotein. Comparison of the cord blood lipid levels in both the groups was done.Results: Cord blood lipid profile was deranged in newborns of hypertensive mothers with Cord TC, TG and LDL being statistically significantly higher than the mean reference value and 95th centile. Cord blood of term newborns of hypertensive mothers had Cord TC TG and LDL being statistically higher whereas only Cord TC being statistically higher in preterm neonates of hypertensive mothers.Conclusions: Cord blood lipid levels were significantly deranged in newborns of hypertensive mothers. This helps us in providing the target population at risk and cord blood lipid profile of newborn serving as an indirect guide for lifestyle modifications and helping in early intervention and prevention of future coronary heart disease.

<p><strong>Background:</strong> An association between thyroid dysfunction and dyslipidemia prevails. Levels of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides tend to increase as thyroid function declines.</p><p><strong>Objective:</strong> To find out the pattern of dyslipidemia in hypothyroid patients. <strong></strong></p><p><strong>Methods:</strong> Sixty cases were selected as a sample of convenience in this cross sectional study from in-patienl depa1tment of Medicine and Endocrinology, BSMMU. Meticulous history taking and thorough clinical examinations were done. Report of lipid profile and thyroid function tests were recorded from patients file. All the information's were recorded in a pre-designed sttuctured questionnaire. Collected data were classi­fied, edited, coded and entered into the computer for statistical analysis by using SPSS. <strong></strong></p><p><strong>Results:</strong> Among the 60 cases, 43 (72%) were female; 17(28%) were male. Age range was 24-59 years with a mean age of 38.80 (± I 0.35) years. Majority 38(65%) were housewife, followed by service holder 11(18.33%), 08(13.3%) were business men and 02(3.3%) had other occupations. Majority 42(70%) patients were taking thyroxin. Mean Total cholesterol (TC), LDL cholesterol, Triglycer­ide (TG) and HDL were 222.20(±42.25); 138.63(±31.51); 243.36(±83.13) and 37.30(±5.12) respectably. <strong></strong></p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> All hypothyroid subjects had dyslipidemia. The present study indicated that hypothyroidism was associated with an abnormal lipid profile, especially with respect to the levels of total cholesterol and triglyceride.</p>

Objective The goal of this study was to explore the metabolic syndrome–associated phenotype of osteoarthritis by investigating the cross-sectional associations of glycemic markers and serum lipids with knee cartilage composition and structural abnormalities in middle-aged adults. Design Twenty participants between 40 to 70 years of age with Kellgren-Lawrence score 0-1 in at least one knee were recruited at a single center. Knee cartilage composition was assessed using 3.0 T cartilage T2 and T1ρ mapping. Evaluation of structural knee abnormalities was performed using the modified Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score (WORMS). Linear regression was used to assess the associations of standardized fasting glucose (FG), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), insulin, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), non-HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides with cartilage T2 and T1ρ as well as WORMS subscores, adjusting for body mass index. Results Higher FG and higher HbA1c were associated with higher WORMS meniscus sum (beta coefficient 1.31 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.57, 2.05], P = 0.002 per standard deviation [SD] increase in FG; beta coefficient 0.90 [95% CI: 0.07, 1.73], P = 0.035 per SD increase in HbA1c). Also, higher total cholesterol and higher non-HDL cholesterol were associated with higher WORMS cartilage sum (beta coefficient 0.94 [95% CI: 0.01, 1.86], P = 0.048 per SD increase in total cholesterol; beta coefficient 1.05 [95% CI: 0.14, 1.96], P = 0.03 per SD increase in non-HDL cholesterol). Conclusions Higher FG and HbA1c were associated with increased meniscal degeneration while higher total and non-HDL cholesterol were associated with increased cartilage degeneration.
