This research paper provides preliminary findings on views expressed by users regarding the use of Electronic Patient Journey Boards (EPJBs) in Queensland Health. Initial data were collected through a qualitative approach in order to understand the views of health professionals regarding EPJBs. This was achieved through interviews, brainstorming sessions and focus groups held with healthcare professionals who have used the EPJB and those who will be using EPJBs in the future. These qualitative data were analysed through the lens of three key critical variables, namely people, processes and technology. The preliminary findings show that these three variables are critical for the success of the use and implementation of EPJBs in the healthcare domain. Furthermore, this research paper was also able to identify factors that will have a significant influence on the implementation of a technology in a healthcare setting. This study is limited t o Queensland Health and needs further research to test the findings of the study, in order to apply the findings more generally. The analysis of data provides an initial blueprint for the implementation of EPJBs more widely.

The researcher in this research paper explores and explains the symbolism of the place where the events took place in Ghassan Kanafani’s novel titled The Three Letters from Palestine. The researcher adopted the qualitative approach in an attempt to examine the symbolism of the spatial element in Three Letters from Palestine and its significance and the deep meaning behind the literal meaning of these symbols. The research reveals the symbolism of place employed in Kanafani's short story, through which he explains his connection to the homeland and concepts related to the Palestinian cause such as belonging to the place, identity, and the Palestinian heritage. This narrative method is one of the methods adopted by Kanafani in his writing, which was intended to link the reader with the events of the short story and its spatial elements.

This research paper set out to explore if the use of authentic materials in the classroom increases young ‘English as a Foreign Language’ (EFL) learners’ motivation. The 10 week investigation used a qualitative approach with 15 participants studying in two separate classes each week. The control class used contrived materials from a standard EFL textbook and the experimental class used authentic materials such as movie extracts, restaurant menus and maps. A significant amount of data was collected through a number of methods which included; recording classroom interaction, student diaries, student interviews and a questionnaire.

The investigation found that the participants’ motivation only increased when exposed to certain authentic materials, and that others caused de-motivation with ‘text difficulty’ observed as a key reason for this. The data revealed the varied nature of the materials used in the experimental class increased motivation in comparison to the control class, which noted repetitiveness as a cause of student dissatisfaction. Additionally, the authentic materials often incorporated activities that the participants liked and this helped raise motivation. Finally, there was evidence that students’ motivation was tied into particular activity types rather than whether they were authentic or contrived based.

Twitter is one of the free microbloggings available today. Created in 2006, Twitter has about 500 million registered users worldwide. Many scholars have been debating over the use of Twitter in teaching and learning. This brief research paper aims to look at Twitter as a source for revision for a course offered at the Defence University in Kuala Lumpur. The assumption is that the students are able to score a higher grade when Twitter is used as a revision tool. 32 students participated in this study and tweets were used to support students during their revision period before the second test and the final examination. Data were analysed based on the results of Test 1 (without Twitter as a revision tool) and Test 2, where comparisons were made to see whether there is a change in the students’ results. Further, the tweets sent to/shared with students and the retweets shared by students were also examined. A survey was also conducted to explore the respondents’ thoughts on using Twitter as a revision tool. Preliminary findings suggest that the students had greatly benefitted when Twitter is used as a revision tool. This is because the results of Test 2 show that all students had an increase in the test result. The results of the survey also indicate that students were positive about using Twitter as a revision tool. Although it cannot be conclusively determined whether Twitter was the only factor that contributed to the increase of students’ results in Test 2, this paper will highlight how Twitter can be used as an effective revision tool.

News has been spread internationally since it was digitalized. This situation makes machine translation used as a tool to solve the language barrier problem, as it is cheap and fast compared to human translators. However, the translation by Machine Translation is not always correct. In fact, it results in more problems than in successful translation; in other words, the use of this machine is like ‘garbage in, garbage out’. However, not many studies have been conducted to provide evidence of the weaknesses of machine translation. This research paper attempts to discover the translation methods and procedures of the “translate to Indonesian” featured by Google Translate in the translation of CNN International current news from English to Indonesian. The data consist of 10 pieces of entertainment news that are published online on CNN International News. A descriptive-qualitative approach is used to analyze the data. The scope of the analysis is lexical words only. The translated news was observed and compared to the original news in order to identify the methods and procedures applied in the translation results by the Machine Translation. The results of this analysis reveal that the “translate to Indonesian” feature from Google Translate commonly uses the literal and faithful translation methods and the procedure mostly found is borrowing. Consequently, the translation by this machine is still awkward and requires substantial improvement.
