News has been spread internationally since it was digitalized. This situation makes machine translation used as a tool to solve the language barrier problem, as it is cheap and fast compared to human translators. However, the translation by Machine Translation is not always correct. In fact, it results in more problems than in successful translation; in other words, the use of this machine is like ‘garbage in, garbage out’. However, not many studies have been conducted to provide evidence of the weaknesses of machine translation. This research paper attempts to discover the translation methods and procedures of the “translate to Indonesian” featured by Google Translate in the translation of CNN International current news from English to Indonesian. The data consist of 10 pieces of entertainment news that are published online on CNN International News. A descriptive-qualitative approach is used to analyze the data. The scope of the analysis is lexical words only. The translated news was observed and compared to the original news in order to identify the methods and procedures applied in the translation results by the Machine Translation. The results of this analysis reveal that the “translate to Indonesian” feature from Google Translate commonly uses the literal and faithful translation methods and the procedure mostly found is borrowing. Consequently, the translation by this machine is still awkward and requires substantial improvement.

The analysis was specified to clauses taken from the English and Indonesian version of the novel, as the data. Further, the researcher applied descriptive qualitative approach in collecting and analyzing the data. Halliday’s theory of metafunction, specified on the analysis of transitivity system was used as main theory. Moreover, the theory of ideology in translation was adopted in the analysis, as causal factor to see how translation ideology cause the ideological shift of text in translation. Then, the result of the analysis revealed that the intermetafunctional shift is the most significant category found in the text (90.24%), while the intra-metafunctional shift was only found once (9.75%). It proved that there were significant change of ideology of text showed by the changing of the process of transitivity system. Morever, the result of analysis releaved that, the ideological shifts of text were mostly affected by domestication ideology with percentages 78.05%, and foreignization ideology by percentages 21.95% or equal to a quarter of the whole clauses. It means that the translator produced the translation based on her goal and point of view and ideology of target language's culture and trying to make the text as closely as possible to the target readers’ language. Natural Language Processing for under-resourced languages is now a mainstream research area. However, there are limited studies on Natural Language Processing applications for many indigenous East African languages. As a contribution to covering the current gap of knowledge, this paper focuses on evaluating the application of well-established machine translation methods for one heavily under-resourced indigenous East African language called Lumasaaba. Specifically, we review the most common machine translation methods in the context of Lumasaaba including both rule-based and data-driven methods. Then we apply a state of the art data-driven machine translation method to learn models for automating translation between Lumasaaba and English using a very limited data set of parallel sentences. Automatic evaluation results show that a transformer-based Neural Machine Translation model architecture leads to consistently better BLEU scores than the recurrent neural network-based models. Moreover, the automatically generated translations can be comprehended to a reasonable extent and are usually associated with the source language input.

Abstract Background There is some evidence to suggest that pharmacists integrated into primary care improves patient outcomes and prescribing quality. Despite this growing evidence, there is a lack of detail about the context of the role. Objective To explore the implementation of The General Practice Pharmacist (GPP) intervention (pharmacists integrating into general practice within a non-randomized pilot study in Ireland), the experiences of study participants and lessons for future implementation. Design and setting Process evaluation with a descriptive qualitative approach conducted in four purposively selected GP practices. Methods A process evaluation with a descriptive qualitative approach was conducted in four purposively selected GP practices. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, transcribed verbatim and analysed using a thematic analysis. Results Twenty-three participants (three pharmacists, four GPs, four patients, four practice nurses, four practice managers and four practice administrators) were interviewed. Themes reported include day-to-day practicalities (incorporating location and space, systems and procedures and pharmacists’ tasks), relationships and communication (incorporating GP/pharmacist mode of communication, mutual trust and respect, relationship with other practice staff and with patients) and role perception (incorporating shared goals, professional rewards, scope of practice and logistics). Conclusions Pharmacists working within the general practice team have potential to improve prescribing quality. This process evaluation found that a pharmacist joining the general practice team was well accepted by the GP and practice staff and effective interprofessional relationships were described. Patients were less clear of the overall benefits. Important barriers (such as funding, infrastructure and workload) and facilitators (such as teamwork and integration) to the intervention were identified which will be incorporated into a pilot cluster randomized controlled trial.
