Many classifications and taxonomies of knowledge management tools highlight mainly specific characteristics and features of a single tool, by ignoring the holistic and systematic dimension of the classification, and the explicit elements of linking with the knowledge management strategy. This chapter aims at proposing a general framework that integrates the technological side of knowledge management with the strategic one. Thus, this framework could represent a powerful instrument to guide knowledge engineers in the implementation phase of a knowledge management system, coherently with strategical choices for knowledge management. Chapter is articulated in two main parts: the first one is focused on reminding some relevant approaches to knowledge management (Hoffmann 2001; Skyrme 2000; Ruggles 1997; Radding 1998; Maier 2002); the second part presents the framework, with a detailed description of its components.

This case study examines the use of committees to develop a Web content management system in an academic library. It explains the process undertaken at the University of Oklahoma Libraries (libraries.ou.edu) to move from an HTML to a database-driven Web site and the issues involved with using committees to steer such projects. Creating a framework where librarians use locally developed content management tools to control Web site content while the systems office retains control of the presentation of content is also discussed. Another aspect of the case study includes the evolution of Web committees in the organization, the development of a system-wide philosophy, and the gradual acceptance of the Web site as a service that demands continual attention. The authors hope readers will benefit from these experiences when implementing similar projects.

Companies constantly thrive to enhance their performance in order to achieve their environmental, social, and economic goals. One way to achieve these goals is to integrate some effective management tools, such as an environmental management system (EMS), that can support sustainable development and value creation. Based on the literature, in this study some EMS integration dimensions were identified that can be used to assess its influence on business performance. The study was conducted on SMEs listed on the AeRO-Bucharest Stock Exchange that voluntary apply the ISO 14001 EMS, using a quantitative approach. To assess the EMS integration score, principal component analysis was used. Using logistic regression analysis, business performance probability (quantified by return on assets) was estimated for each company included in the final sample. Fuzzy logic was further used for modelling the influence of EMS integration on business performance probability. The research results showed that EMS integration has different effects on business performance probability, considering the influence of activity field and environmental management experience. This research assertion could be extended for all the listed Romanian companies or for major companies at the EU level.

Abstract The Irish fishing fleet is subject to monthly quotas which are designed to ensure an equal share between vessels and to spread uptake throughout the year. This monthly quota system also allows us to study the links between discarding and quota exhaustion once a month rather than once a year, as would be the case in most other countries. The hypothesis that discards of cod, haddock, and whiting would increase through the month, as quotas were used up, was tested using observer data collected from commercial fishing vessels. Other than for whiting the results showed no relationship between discarding and day of the month. Instead gear type and target fishery were bigger drivers of discarding with restrictive quotas for cod and haddock resulting in consistent discarding of these species throughout the month. Improvements in gear selectivity may aid in reducing discards but due to the mixed nature of the fishery there is limited ability for vessels to reduce catches of these quota restricted species. Understanding how such a quota management system may influence fishing and discarding behaviour is important when developing management tools to assist in avoiding unwanted catch. This is especially important with the introduction of the Landing Obligation in EU fisheries.

Purpose The purpose of this technical paper is to evaluate the emerging standard “Allotrope Data Format (ADF)” in the context of digital preservation at a major US academic library hosted at Brigham Young University. In combination with the new information management system ZONTAL Space (ZS), archiving with the ADF is compared with currently used systems CONTENTdm and ROSETTA. Design/methodology/approach The approach is a workflow-based comparison in terms of usability, functionality and reliability of the systems. Current workflows are replaced by optimized target processes, which limit the number of involved parties and process steps. The connectors or manual solutions between the current workflow steps are replaced with automatic functions inside of ZS. Reporting functionalities inside of ZS are used to track system and file lifecycle to ensure stability and data preservation. Findings The authors find that the target processes leveraging ZS drastically reduce complexity compared to current workflows. Archiving with the ADF is found to decrease integration complexity and provide a more robust data migration path for the future. The possibility to enrich data automatically with metadata and to store this information alongside the content in the same information package increases reusability of the data. Research limitations/implications The practical implications of this work suggest the arrival of a new information management system that can potentially revolutionize the archiving landscape within libraries. Beyond the scope of the initial proof of concept, the potential for the system can be seen to replace existing data management tools and provide access to new data analytics applications, like smart recommender systems. Originality/value The value of this study is a systematic introduction of ZS and the ADF, two emerging solutions from the Pharmaceutical Industry, to the broader audience of digital preservation experts within US libraries. The authors consider the exchange of best practices and solutions between industries to be of high value to the communities.

In the article, the authors consider the specifics of the term social technology and the use of social technology tools. The study is based on the fundamental ideas of sociology, comparative analysis, and interdisciplinary approach. The theoretical study is based on conceptual works and research results of Russian and foreign authors devoted to the analysis of the use of social technologies of management. It was determined, which tools are public and which-private. In the article, the authors present the results of an empirical study of the ideological and personnel tools of social technology in the management system. The assignment of social technology is the optimization of the managerial process for obtaining a socio-economic result. The management system, that functioning in the organization, is having the main share of the influence on the effectiveness of the company. Few managers are apt to revise the management principles. In the course of the study, a method of further training and career advancement has been demonstrated in the framework of personnel management, it has been established, that this method is not always effective. For social management, the problems of finding the most effective, existing tools that used in the areas of transformative or corrective social practice are still relevant. Management tools used within social technology of management are multiform. These include ideological, staffing, technological, socio-economic, and informational. It should be noted that the object of management – has a certain influence on what tools will be more effective. Rather, it is effective in different organizations on the different working conditions and gender affiliation. To improve management efficiency, it is necessary to use optimal tools in the technology of practical activity. Social experiments were conducted. Were selected organizations that are in the field of ‘Production’ (N = 40), ‘Trade’ (N = 45), ‘Construction’ (N = 50). To the tools of social technology in the management system belong ideological, staffing, technological, socio-economic, information. Ideological and personnel only were used. Tools can have public and private character. The results obtained in the study make it possible to supplement theoretical sociology in the aspect of sociology of management. The data obtained in the course of the experiment allowed establishing that the ideological management tool as a mission is not sufficiently used in organizations. Two principles are analyzed, the first is connected with personal connections, acquaintances, recommendations; the second principle was based on ads in the media, the Internet and public channels of communication. It has been established that age matters for men working in construction organizations. In organizations, management tools such as reassignment to higher positions, the ‘The board of honor’, are underused. The advanced training at the organization expense practically not used. At the respondents of the trade organization were not involved such personal motives as respect from the side of a Head, respect from the side of colleagues, and awareness of the social significance of their work. Most often, respondents point out such a way of training personnel as on-the-job training. This gives a certain positive result regardless of the organization. The research results can be used in further work on the problems of the tools of management.
