The present study was conducted to assess the usefulness of MUAC as a screening tool to assess nutritional status during pregnancy (>20 weeks).  Pregnant women (>20 weeks of gestation, n=100) were enrolled from tertiary care ANC clinics in urban areas of Delhi. Data on socio-demographic profile was collected using pre-tested questionnaires. The blood pressure and anthropometric parameters (weight, height and MUAC) were recorded. The mean height, weight and MUAC of pregnant women were 152.15 ± 4.93cm, 56.7 ± 6.7Kgs and 25.5 ± 2.60cm respectively. Weight gain between trimesters and overall weight gain showed no correlation with blood pressure. Maternal weight was positively correlated with MUAC (p=0.00), SBP (p=0.006) and DBP (p=0.02). Maternal height was negatively correlated with MUAC (p=0.012). BMI and MUAC showed a significantly positive correlation (p=0.00), which indicates the versatility of this tool. However, no association was observed between MUAC and blood pressure during pregnancy in the present study.

Nutrition is a process of using food that is consumed normally. Nutrition in pregnancy is a healthy and balanced diet that must be consumed during pregnancy. Assessment of the nutritional status of pregnant women can be known by the presence of weight gain during pregnancy, measuring the upper arm circumference (LILA), and measuring Hb. Nutrition plays a major role in maternal and child health. Poor maternal nutritional status will affect growth and development during pregnancy. The benefits of balanced nutrition during pregnancy are meeting the nutritional needs of the mother and fetus, achieving nutritional status under normal circumstances. Maternal weight before pregnancy and weight gain during pregnancy is less (underweight) or more (overweight) than normal will make pregnancy a risk (low risk). This study aims to determine the knowledge of pregnant women about nutrition during pregnancy in Sialang Jaya Village in 2021, the research method used is a descriptive method with a cross sectional research design. The population in this study were pregnant women, with a sample of 30 respondents. Sampling using Total Sampling. In this study, the measuring instrument used was in the form of a questionnaire as many as 20, while the data analysis was carried out by univariate analysis which resulted in a frequency distribution. The results showed that based on the knowledge of 30 respondents who had good knowledge as many as 3 respondents (10.0%), 13 respondents with sufficient knowledge (43.3%), and those with less knowledge were 14 respondents (46.7%). The conclusion from the research conducted by researchers is that the average knowledge of pregnant women about nutrition during pregnancy in Sialang Jaya Village 2021 is less knowledgeable. To increase knowledge, pregnant women should get information directly from health workers, social media, the environment and others related to pregnant women.

Poor nutritional status and inadequate food intake during and prior to pregnancy not only affect Women’s health but also have negative impact on growth and development of fetus.  The birth weight of an infant is a powerful predictor of growth and survival of infant and is dependent on maternal health and nutritional status, pre-pregnancy weight and general weight gain are all strongly associated with fetal growth and development. So, improving maternal nutrition prior to conception and during pregnancy are potential strategies to improve birth weight. The Present study has been carried out to discuss the circumstances under which the effect of maternal nutrition on birth weight can be observed, and to determine the specific contributors of calories and protein to birth weight. Materials and methods: The present study has been carried out at Teaching Medical College and hospital to find out correlation between various factors responsible for maternal weight gain and nutrition with birth weight of baby and to standardize diet chart for pregnant mothers in rural area. The study included 100 women who were followed up from 8 to 10 week of pregnancy till delivery. Anthropometric measurements including maternal weight, height and total weight gain in pregnancy and infant’s birth weight were recorded and all mothers were interviewed for their bio-social variables. Results: The mean birth weight is below 2.4 kg in age <19 years and in 30 years and above, it is >2.5 kg.  The mean birth weight in primipara is 2.4 kg and then it gradually increased maximum up to 2.6 kg in multipara. The mean birth weight in 2.4 kg in mothers below 145cm.Above that till 160 cm there is steady increase in birth weight up to 3.08 kg. The mean birth weight was lowest in cases where maternal weight is below 40 kg and it reached maximum 3 kg in weight group 60-69 kg. The mean birth weight is 2.4 kg in weight gain between 5-9 kg and maximum up to 3 kg in weight gain between 15-19 kg. The mean birth weight is 3.2 kg in high socioeconomic group and 2.2 kg in low socioeconomic group. Conclusion: There is definite relation between maternal age, parity, height, pre-pregnancy weight, weight gain during pregnancy, socioeconomic status and daily dietary intake per day and birth weight of baby. So health policies should be aimed at early detection and effective management of under nutrition to reduce the burden of low birth weight babies and there is a need to focus attention on better maternal nutrition and education on birth spacing, early pregnancy and family planning.

Background: Maternal weight gain is influenced by several trends in perinatal health that are of great public health concern. Maternal weight gain during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters is an important determinant of fetal growthObjective: To determine the relationship between maternal weight gain and birth weight of baby at term.Methodology : A cross sectional observational study was carried among 50 pregnant women at term were admitted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital and Anwer Khan Modern Medical College hospital during the period of January 2014 to July 2014. Data were collected pre-designed data collection sheet.Results: This study found maximum (36%) were age group 21-25 years followed by 28% were 20 years, 24% were 26-30 years, 8% were 31-35 years and only 4% were 36-40 years. The average age was 25 years. Among these 50 pregnant women, 2 cases (4%) had BMI <18.5, 15 cases (30%) had a BMI 18.5- 24.9, 19 cases (38%) had a BMI 25-29.9 and 14 cases (28%) had a BMI ≥30. The mean birth weight was 2.77±0.33. kg. Mean weight gain was 10.72±3.72 Kg. Weight increased there was a corresponding increase in the mean birth weight and this relationship was statistically significant (<0.05).Conclusion: This study shows maternal weight gain significantly increased birth weight of the baby at term. Maternal weight should continue to be given importance in monitoring the health of pregnancies and bioelectrical impedance analysis and arm measurements should be further investigated as another simple way to track appropriate body composition changes across gestation, especially in resource-limited settings. Although challenging, public health efforts should continue working to improve the nutritional status of women of reproductive age before they conceive as an apparent way to improve birth outcomes.Anwer Khan Modern Medical College Journal Vol. 9, No. 1: Jan 2018, P 22-28

This study described the nutritional status of 228 pregnant women and the influence of this on birth weight. This is a retrospective study, developed in a health center in the municipality of São Paulo, with data obtained from medical records. Linear regression analysis was carried out. An association was verified between the initial and final nutritional status (p<0.001). The mean of total weight gain in the pregnant women who began the pregnancy underweight was higher compared those who started overweight/obese (p=0.005). Weight gain was insufficient for 43.4% of the pregnant women with adequate initial weight and for 36.4% of all the pregnant women studied. However, 37.1% of those who began the pregnancy overweight/obese finished with excessive weight gain, a condition that ultimately affected almost a quarter of the pregnant women. Anemia and low birth weight were uncommon, however, in the linear regression analysis, birth weight was associated with weight gain (p<0.05). The study highlights the importance of nutritional care before and during pregnancy to promote maternal-infant health.

Background: The relationship between nutritional status in early life and the risk of chronic diseases in the future development of the child is a critical factor that needs to be considered. The basic factors that can help in this case include thrifty phenotype hypothesis, developmental plasticity, fetal programming and weight gain regulation. This study aims to determine the average increase in weight gain before and after mentoring program. Design and methods: The sample was taken randomly from 191 pregnant women. From number of women mentored, 106 that met the inclusion criteria. Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test then was used in the data analysis.Results: The results show that the average body weight of women increased 18.94%, while the BMI rose by 7.46%. Mentoring program led to an increase in maternal body weight, indicated with a P-value of 0.000.Conclusions: In conclusion, mentoring program influences bodyweight in pregnant women. Therefore, it is vital to maintain a high nutritional status during pregnancy.

Background: The aim of treatment of severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia is to quickly bring about a smooth reduction in blood pressure to levels that are safe for both mother and baby but avoiding any sudden drops. There are not many studies comparing nifedipine and labetalol for this purpose. Authors conducted this study with the aim of comparing their efficacy in reducing maternal blood pressure.Methods: It was a cross over trial with 30 patients in each group conducted at a tertiary care hospital. 60 pregnant women were randomized to receive nifedipine (20mg loading dose followed by 10 mg tablet, orally, up to maximum of five doses) or  intravenous labetalol  (in an escalating dose regimen of 20, 40, 80, 80 and 80 mg)  every 20 minutes until the target blood pressure of 150/100 mmHg was achieved. Crossover treatment was affected if the initial treatment regimen was unsuccessful after 20 min of the last dose of the drug in the respective groups.Results: The mean time to achieve the target blood pressure was 32.0 ±18.64 minutes (mean ± SD) in nifedipine group as compared with 37.04 ± 16.36 minutes in those receiving labetalol (P = .002). In the nifedipine group 63.3% required only one dose compared to 36.6% in the labetalol group.  Only two women in the nifedipine group required maximum number of doses that is five doses. Cross over treatment was required by 10% of patients in the labetalol group and none in the nifedipine group.Conclusions: This study shows that oral nifedipine is more effective than intravenous labetalol in rapid control of hypertension in severe pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.

Abstract Background Previous studies have reported a high prevalence of hypertension in Iranian students, especially in rural areas. The aim of this study was to investigate the daily intake of salt in students and its association with high blood pressure. Methods A random sub-sample was selected from the participants of the second phase of Shahroud schoolchildren eye cohort study and then a random urine sample was tested for sodium, potassium and creatinine. Urine electrolyte esexcretion and daily salt intake were calculated by Tanaka et al.’s formula. Results Among 1455 participants (including 230 participants from rural area and 472 girls), the mean age was 12.9 ± 1.7 year and the mean daily salt intake was 9.7 ± 2.6 g (95% CI 9.5–9.8). The mean salt consumption in rural areas [10.8 (95% CI 10.4–11.2)] was higher than urban areas [9.4 (95% CI 9.3–9.6)], in people with hypertension [10.8 (95% CI 10.3–11.3)] was more than people with normal blood pressure [9.4 (95% CI 9.3–9.6)], and in boys [9.8 (95% CI 9.7–10.0)] was more than girls [9.3 (95% CI 9.1–9.6)]. Higher age, BMI z-score, male sex and rural life, were associated with increased daily salt intake. Increased salt intake was associated with increased systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Conclusion Daily salt intake in Iranian adolescents was about 2 times the recommended amount of the World Health Organization, was higher in rural areas and was associated with blood pressure. Reducing salt intake should be considered as an important intervention, especially in rural areas.

Objective: To determine the frequency and outcome in pregnant women with COVID-19 infection. Study Design: This is a observational cohort study. Setting: Study carried out at Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Civil Hospital, Dow University of health sciences Karachi, from July 2020 to November 2021. Materials & Methods:  The study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Karachi. Women having COVID-19 positive status during any stage of their pregnancy having antenatal visits in our hospital were included in our study. Maternal demographics, race, maternal outcome, and neonatal complications were noted on a self-made Performa. Statistical analysis was done by SPSS version 21 and descriptive statistics with frequencies were mainly calculated. Results: During the defined time of 14 months, we had 143 women visiting antenatal outpatient department and were tested positive for COVID-19. Majority of the women were tested for COVID-19 due to symptoms like fever, flu, cough and diarrhea. The mean age of women in our study was found to be 30 ± 6.7 years. The most frequent maternal outcome with SARSCOV-2 was preterm delivery. Out of 143, 27 cases had emergency lower segment C-section.PCR testing of neonates was carried out and 8.39% (n=12) neonates tested positive for SARSCOV-2.  Conclusion: Infection with Covid-19 during pregnancy is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Covid-19  infection can be transmitted to the fetus during pregnancy or childbirth. Neonatal has a high chance of being admitted to the ICU, and women also faces other complications of Covid 19, such as the risk of miscarriage and premature delivery.

Background: Hypertension during pregnancy remains high in Indonesia. It is a major cause of maternal death. Aromatherapy lavender and classical music therapy are considered effective in lowering blood pressure in hypertension.Objective: To examine the effect of lavender aromatherapy and classical music therapy in lowering blood pressure in pregnant women with hypertension.Methods: A quasy experimental study with pretest-posttest control group design. There were 52 pregnant women with the inclusion criteria selected as samples using simple random sampling, divided into lavender aromatherapy group, classical music group, combination of aromatherapy and music group, and control group. Sphygmomanometer was used to measure blood pressure. Mann Whitney and Post Hoc test were used for data analysis.Results: Results showed that four groups have a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure after given intervention with p-value <0.05. The mean decrease of systolic blood pressure among four groups was: lavender group (5.77 mmHg), music group (7.23 mmHg), combination group (9.54 mmHg), and control group (3.67 mmHg); and the mean decrease of diastolic blood pressure was: the lavender group (2.77 mmHg), music group (0.61 mmHg), combination group (8.23 mmHg), and control group (3.42 mmHg).Conclusion: there was a significant effect of lavender aromatherapy and classical music therapy in lowering blood pressure in pregnant women with hypertension. However, the combination of both interventions was more effective than lavender aromatherapy or music therapy alone.
