A case-control study evaluated the relationship between hypertension and socioeconomic and lifestyle factors in Al-Ain city. The survey included 426 hypertensive adults aged 20-65 years attending urban and semi-urban clinics and a randomly selected sample of 436 normotensive controls. Hypertension among cases was higher for men, age 40-49 years, non-UAE nationals, urban living, currently married, having children, illiterate, administrative/professional job, living in traditional house and low income. There were significant differences between cases and controls with regard to obesity, raised cholesterol level, low physical activity and family history of heart disease, kidney disease or diabetes. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that obesity, medium/high income, history of diabetes, low physical activity and having 3+ children were significantly associated with hypertension

Objective: To know the relationship between obesity and gynecology cancer. Method: This study use case control study design for 250 gynecology patients (125 controls and 125 cases) in Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou Manado Hospital from 1 July to 30 November 2015. The data was collected by measuring Body Mass Index (BMI) and filing out selfadministered questioners. Result: From the 250 subjects, the study group (125 subjects), 72 subjects have obesity (57.6%) and 97 subjects have multiple parities (77.6%) with 58 subjects diagnosed with cervical cancer (46.4%). In the control group (125 subjects), 71 subjects have normal weight (56.8%) and 67 subjects have multiple parities (53.6%) with 64 subjects diagnosed with ovarium cysts (51.2%). Using multivariate logistic regression, the overweight and obese subjects have 7 folds higher risk to develop gynecology cancer compared to those with normal or underweight subjects. Those with multiple parities and grande multipara subjects have 3 folds higher risk to develop gynecology cancer compared with those who are nullipara and primipara. Conclusion: A significant correlation is found between obesity and gynecology cancer using multivariate logistic regression analysis (p=0.000, OR=6.9 (95% CI = 3.62-13.13). Abstract Little is known about the etiology of MDS. A hospital-based case control study was conducted to investigate the association between lifestyle characteristics and MDS risk. Cases included 354 newly diagnosed adult de novo MDS cases registered at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) between 1996 and 2003. Four hundred and fifty two age-, sex- and race-matched healthy controls were recruited among visitors to MDACC who accompanied patients to different clinics excluding the Leukemia clinic. A validated questionnaire was used to collect demographic and epidemiological information including lifetime history of smoking, alcohol drinking and occupational history. Multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusting for all variables simultaneously was used. The distribution by FAB type was 102 (29%) RA/RARS, 43 (12%) CMML and 209 (59%) RAEB/RAEB-T. The mean age of patients was 64 years (range: 24 to 89), the male to female ratio was 2.72, and 94% of cases were whites. Abnormal cytogenetics was found in 49% of the patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed among all MDS cases and among each FAB type. For all MDS combined, having a first degree relative diagnosed with a hematopoietic cancer (Odds ratio (OR)=1.92, 95% CI: 1.11–3.33), having ever smoked (OR=1.65, 95% CI: 1.19–2.29), having been exposed to agricultural chemicals (OR=4.57, 95% CI: 1.78–11.7) and solvents (OR=2.08, 95% CI: 1.22–3.54) were associated with MDS risk. Wine drinkers had a reduced risk of MDS as compared to those who never drank alcohol (OR=0.54, 95%: 0.37–0.79). For the RA/RARS type, smoking (OR=2.16, 95% CI: 1.3–3.6) and having been exposed to agricultural chemicals (OR=4.64, 95% CI: 1.27–16.9) were the only two risk factors identified. Wine drinkers were at reduced risk (OR=0.51, 95% CI: 0.29–0.91). For the RAEB/RAEBT type, a positive family history of hematopoietic cancer (OR=2.16, 95% CI: 1.17–3.98), smoking (OR=1.55, 95% CI: 1.05–2.30) and exposure to agricultural chemicals (OR=4.12, 95% CI: 1.51–11.3) or solvents (OR=2.83, 95% CI: 1.59–5.05) were independent risk factors. Also drinking wine seemed to reduce the risk by almost 50% (OR=0.51, 95% CI: 0.32–0.81). We also found a joint effect between smoking and chemical exposures with the largest OR found among smokers who were also exposed to solvents or agricultural chemicals as compared to never smokers without chemical exposures (OR=3.22, 95% CI: 2.11–4.92, Trend test: p<0.0001). Results from this large study suggest that several factors play a role in predisposing to MDS with possible joint effects. Risk profiles seem to differ by FAB type. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of HLA-DRB1 alleles on the genetic susceptibility to multiple sclerosis in the Lithuanian population. Material and Methods. A total of 120 patients with multiple sclerosis and 120 unrelated healthy controls were enrolled in this case-control study. Allelic frequencies were compared between the groups. HLA-DRB1 alleles were genotyped using the polymerase chain reaction. Results. HLA-DRB1*15 was present in 55.8% of the patients with multiple sclerosis and 10.0% of the controls (OR, 5.58; 95% CI, 3.19–9.77; P<0.0001). The protective alleles that were found to be more prevalent among the controls compared with the patients with multiple sclerosis were HLADRB1* 01 (26.7% vs. 7.5%, P<0.0001), *03 (17.5% vs. 8.3%, P=0.034), and *16 (11.7% vs. 3.3%, P=0.014). HLA-DRB1*15 was more common among the female patients with multiple sclerosis than among the male patients (68.4% vs. 34.1%; OR, 4.18; 95%, CI 1.90–9.22; P=0.001). The heterozygous inheritance of HLA-DRB1*15 allele was more common in the patients with a history of maternal multiple sclerosis than in those with a history of paternal multiple sclerosis (29.4% vs. 9.8%; P=0.045). Conclusions. HLA-DRB1*15 was found to be associated with multiple sclerosis in the Lithuanian population. This allele was more prevalent among the female patients with multiple sclerosis. Maternal multiple sclerosis was more common than paternal multiple sclerosis, but the relationship with HLA-DRB1*15 allele was not established. HLA-DRB1*01, *03, and *16 appeared to be the protective alleles in this series.

Background and objectives: Siesta, which is a short afternoon nap, is a habit that is commonly practiced in the Mediterranean and tropical areas. Data on the association between siesta and coronary artery disease has been conflicting. A protective effect has been demonstrated in the countries that commonly practice siesta, but a harmful effect has been observed in the countries that infrequently practice the siesta habit. Information on the association between siesta and ischemic stroke has been, however, lacking. Hence, the purpose of our study was to determine the effect of siesta on ischemic stroke. Materials and Methods: This was a case-control study, conducted on the patients with acute ischemic stroke who came for their first follow-up visit to the neurology clinic. Controls were randomly selected from the patients visiting the neurology clinic on the same day as the patients with ischemic stroke. In addition to basic demographics and the occurrence of established stroke risk factors, information about siesta practice was also collected from both groups. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was utilized to determine the relationship between siesta practice and ischemic stroke. Results: A total of 206 patients were recruited from the neurology clinic of King Khalid university hospital; of which only 194 subjects were included in the analysis (98 ischemic stroke cases and 96 controls). The mean age of the participants was 59.68 ± 13.75 years and 98 (50.52%) were male. Interestingly, 43% of the whole study cohort practiced regular siesta. However, when compared to the stroke population, the control group practiced siesta more frequently (30% vs. 56%). In a multivariate logistic regression analysis, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, excess body weight (body mass index > 25 kg/m2) and dyslipidemia were found to increase the risk of ischemic stroke (OR 2.12, 95% CI: 1.02–4.66, p = 0.005; OR 2.72, 95% CI: 1.94–4.88, p = 0.014; OR 2.94, 95% CI: 1.5164–5.7121 p = 0.0014; OR 3.27, 95% CI: 2.42–5.199, p ≤ 0.001, respectively). On the contrary, the practice of regular siesta lowered the risk of ischemic stroke (OR 0.58, 95% CI: 0.3551–0.9526, p = 0.031). Conclusions: Siesta was associated with a reduced risk for the occurrence of ischemic stroke. Large prospective longitudinal studies should be conducted to verify the protective effect of siesta on stroke.

Background:The aim of this study was to investigate the association between lifetime physical activity and risk of lung cancer.Methods:A case-control study was conducted in southern Brazil. Case subjects were recruited from oncology services of 4 hospitals. Control subjects were selected from the same hospitals, but from different services (traumatology and emergency). Both case subjects (n = 81) and control subjects (n = 168) were interviewed using a questionnaire about sociodemographic characteristics, anthropometric information and family history of cancer. Control subjects were matched to case subjects according to sex and age (± 5 years). Detailed information on smoking was collected. Physical activity was measured using the Lifetime Physical Activity Questionnaire.Results:Of the case subjects, 89% were either current or former smokers; among control subjects, this value was 57%. Participants in the second, third, and fourth quartiles of all-domains physical activity had odds ratios of 0.54 (95% CI, 0.21–1.40), 0.25 (95% CI, 0.08–0.72), and 0.24 (95% CI, 0.07–0.83) for lung cancer, compared with the lowest quartile, after adjusting for confounding. In the fully adjusted models, leisure-time physical activity was not associated with lung cancer risk.Conclusion:Lifetime all-domains physical activity may reduce the risk of lung cancer.

AbstractPre-diabetes increases the risk of diabetes and CVD. Several studies have investigated the relationship between food intake and pre-diabetes morbidity, but the dietary patterns of pre-diabetes subjects were not taken into consideration. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between dietary patterns and pre-diabetes. In this regard, 150 pre-diabetic subjects and 150 healthy controls, who attended the diabetes screening centre in Shahreza, Iran, were matched for age group and sex. The weight, height, waist circumference, physical activity, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and blood glucose levels of all participants were measured. Dietary information was collected using a semi-quantitative FFQ. Using factor analysis, two dietary patterns were identified: the vegetables, fruits and legumes (VFL) dietary pattern and the sweet, solid fat, meat and mayonnaise (SSMM) dietary pattern. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between pre-diabetes and dietary patterns. After adjusting for age, education, physical activity, BMI and energy intake, the VFL dietary pattern was found to be negatively associated with lower pre-diabetes (OR 0·16; 95 % CI 0·10, 0·26). Furthermore, the SSMM dietary pattern was positively associated with pre-diabetes (OR 5·45; 95 % CI 3·22, 9·23). In conclusion, the VFL dietary pattern is inversely related to pre-diabetes, whereas the SSMM dietary pattern is associated with increased risk of pre-diabetes.

Background: It was suggested that dietary patterns might play a role in the pathogenesis of nephrolithiasis. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between dietary patterns and the occurrence of calcium oxalate kidney stone disease. Methods: A case-control study was conducted on 634 male and female participants aged 18-65 in Tehran using a convenient sampling method. The participants were investigated in the case (n = 317) and control (n = 317) groups. Demographic and anthropometric information, medical history, physical activity, and dietary intake were collected by interview. A validated 147-item food frequency questionnaire was administered to assess the dietary patterns. Factor analysis was also applied with principal component approach (PCA) to determine the major dietary patterns. Results: The findings showed two major dietary patterns using 41 food groups. Significant differences were observed in nutritional factors and physical activity between the case and the control groups. After adjusting the covariates, the risk of calcium oxalate kidney stone was significantly higher for those in the highest tertile of unhealthy dietary pattern compared to the lowest ones (OR, 3.83; 95%CI, 2.22-6.61). Additionally, no relationship was found between the healthy dietary pattern and the risk of calcium oxalate kidney stone in any of the four logistic regression models (P for trend > 0.05) (OR,0.95; 95%CI, 0.58-1.55). Conclusion: We found that the unhealthy dietary pattern was strongly associated with increased risk for calcium oxalate kidney stones.

Background. Circulating adiponectin has been suggested to be associated with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, whether the association differs by age and gender remains unknown. We performed a case-control study to evaluate the above association. Methods. AF patients who underwent 24-hour long-range 12-channel electrocardiogram examination at our center were included in this study, and people with normal sinus rhythm (NSR) were included as controls. All participants underwent echocardiography and heart rate variability tests. Biochemical parameters and adiponectin levels were also evaluated. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were used to determine the predictive efficacy of adiponectin for AF, and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the potential independent predictors of AF. Results. Overall, 84 patients with AF and 84 people with NSR were included. Serum adiponectin was significantly higher in AF patients compared to that in controls ( P < 0.001 ). ROC analysis showed that higher serum adiponectin (>6.098 μg/mL) had predictive efficacy for AF, with an area under the curve of 0.660 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 577–0.742). The results of multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that higher adiponectin was an independent predictor of AF in the overall participants (odds ratio [OR] 1.224, 95% CI 1.018–1.471, P = 0.032 ). Subgroup analysis showed that higher adiponectin was independently associated with AF in women (OR 1.893, 95% CI 1.160–3.089, P = 0.011 ) and in patients aged < 65 years (OR 1.453, 95% CI 1.023–2.064, P = 0.037 ), but not in men or those aged ≥ 65 years. Conclusions. Higher serum adiponectin level was independently associated with higher odds for AF in women and in participants <65 years old, but not in men or those aged ≥65 years.

A population-based case–control study of diet, inherited susceptibility and prostate cancer was undertaken in the lowlands and central belt of Scotland to investigate the effect of phyto-oestrogen intake and serum concentrations on prostate cancer risk. A total of 433 cases and 483 controls aged 50–74 years were asked to complete a validated FFQ and provide a non-fasting blood sample. Multivariate logistic regression analysis found significant inverse associations with increased serum concentrations of enterolactone (adjusted OR 0·40, 95 % CI 0·22, 0·71] and with the consumption of soy foods (adjusted OR 0·52, 95 % CI 0·30, 0·91). However, no significant associations were observed for isoflavone intake or serum genistein, daidzein and equol. This study supports the hypotheses that soy foods and enterolactone metabolised from dietary lignans protect against prostate cancer in older Scottish men.
